The Year 2014 in Gaming - The Dosage Podcast, Ep. 129 #Year2014inGaming #Podcast #2014 The year 2014 saw a number of events in the video game industry. No new major consoles were released, but updates and upgrades were: the New Nintendo 3DS was released in Japan and Oceania, and Sony released new model 2000 PS Vita systems in Europe & North America. In video game-related corporate acquisitions, Amazon purchased the online video game streaming service Twitch, and Facebook acquired the virtual reality company and product Oculus. Nintendo released Amiibo in 2014, companion figurines that could be scanned by the 3DS and WiiU systems. On Twitter and other Internet social media, the Gamergate controversy began. Among video games originally released in 2014, critics gave the highest reviews to Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, Dark Souls II, Bayonetta 2, Shovel Knight, Velocity 2X, Dragon Age: Inquisition, Mario Kart 8, and Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft. Other significant games that won awards included Destiny, Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, and Monument Valley. On this episode, we chart a course through all things games: We start our journey from Recent Release Bay, where games that have recently entered the hype cycle slosh against the waves, including Returnal, Ratchet and Clank, and New Pokémon Snap. We then enter the icy and tumultuous Activisea, where blistering gales carry the news of Activision Blizzard slowly transforming into the Call of Duty Corporation, with Toys for Bob forced to become a Warzone support studio. These harsh winds are only slightly buffeted by our quiet reflections on Hearthstone and World of Warcraft. Once the squall ends, we sail straight towards the Game Dev Archipelago, using the Double Fine’s recently released Amnesia Fortnight 2019 documentary as a guide. By this point, it’s all calm waters, as we discuss individual authorship on massive game projects as well as anti-adventure games with Diaries of a Spaceport Janitor. Games include Teardown, Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft, World of Warcraft: Battle for Azeroth, and Diaries of a Spaceport Janitor. Got a question for the show? As foretold by the prophecies, this episode is all about Blizard's strategy card game Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft. It's a game that's had its hooks in me for over a year now, but one that I've had little success in getting friends to try out. But last week Aaron and I agreed that he would do some homework by trying the game out so that we could talk about it on the show. You'd think that it'd be easy to get people to try out a game that's amazing and free and available on pretty much every desktop and mobile device imaginable, but the only surefire way that I've found to get people to try it out is to assign homework. Yes, I'm lots of fun at parties. Anyway, I don't want to give anything away about what Aaron thought about Hearthstone except to say that it sounds like he's going to be assigning himself some additional Hearthstone Homework. Some "extra credit," if you will. For this week and potentially for several weeks to come. Also, this is an exciting week for us because we have our first official sponsor! John Schultz has sponsored Techdown by supplying us with beer (AKA "Podcast Fuel") for tonight's episode. And as a lover of animals, John would like to remind all Techdown listeners to "Adopt, don't shop." If you're looking for a furry new addition to your family, there are countless animals looking to be rescued from your local Humane Society or adoption agency - Aaron, John, and I have all had amazing experiences adopting our cats and dogs, and we're sure you will as well.
