How Economics Explains the World: A Short History of Humanity (Mariner Books, 2024) is a book for anyone interested in understanding the economic forces that have shaped our world. Its blend of historical insight and contemporary relevance makes it a valuable addition to your bookshelf. This small book indeed tells a big story. It is the story of capitalism – of how our market system developed. It is the story of the discipline of economics, and some of the key figures who formed it. And it is the story of how economic forces have shaped world history. Why didn't Africa colonize Europe instead of the other way around? What happened when countries erected trade and immigration barriers in the 1930s? Why did the Allies win World War II? Why did inequality in many advanced countries fall during the 1950s and 1960s? How did property rights drive China's growth surge in the 1980s? How does climate change threaten our future prosperity? You'll find answers to these questions and more in How Economics Explains the World. Andrew Leigh is an Australian economist, author, and politician currently serving as the Assistant Minister for Competition, Charities and Treasury, as well as the Assistant Minister for Employment. A member of the Australian Labor Party, he has represented the electorate of Fenner in the House of Representatives since 2010. Before entering politics, he was a professor of economics at the Australian National University, specialising in public policy, inequality, and economic reform. Leigh is a prolific writer, having authored several books on economic and social issues, and is known for his commitment to evidence-based policymaking and fostering competition in the Australian economy. “If you read just one book about economics, make it Andrew Leigh's clear, insightful, and remarkable (and short) work.” —Claudia Goldin, recipient of the 2023 Nobel Prize in Economics and Henry Lee Professor of Economics at Harvard University One of The Economist's Best Books of the Year Learn more about your ad choices. In this episode we're joined by Federal Member for Fenner, the Honorable Dr Andrew Leigh MP, and philosopher and emeritus professor of bioethics at Princeton University, Peter Singer, to consider if we should value the lives of unborn future generations, more than we value those of us alive today. The consideration of lives unborn sits at the heart of ‘existential risk'. It asks us to take seriously all the future generations who, if humanity gets it right, could end up far far more numerous than every life lived to date. We could in fact, be just at the beginning of our beautiful journey as a species. But we do face a number of very real risks that could literally destroy us all - biowarfare, climate change and AI to name but a few.So, should we spend our limited resources helping the poorest and most in need today, wherever they live? Or should we divert resources to reduce the sorts of risks which, if left unchecked, could prevent countless generations from coming into existence at all?Peter Singer - BioPeter Singer is emeritus professor of bioethics at Princeton University. Have you missed me on Instagram or Facebook? It's been two months since I shut down my accounts on those platforms, and I have not received one request for me to come back on. My point gets to the heart of the topic I am talking about today, the concept of 'noise' in decision-making, particularly in financial planning and portfolio management. There is a strong need to filter out irrelevant information, especially political noise, to focus on what truly impacts your personal and financial life. I share a few personal anecdotes to illustrate how I manage the noise in my life and work, advocating for a mindful approach to information consumption. In this episode, I chat to Andrew Nel of Frankie Fenner Meat Merchants, an ethical butchery with branches in the Woodstock, Gardens and Claremont suburbs of Cape Town. FFMM was founded by Andy Fenner and his wife Nicole to honour the practice of nose-to-tail eating, in which they emphasised sustainable practices by sourcing whole animals and using every part with respect. Andrew joined the business in 2017 and continues the journey, having added long table events to the FFMM calendar to foster a deeper connection between consumers and their food while promoting conscious meat consumption. By championing ethical sourcing in the heart of the city, they are the go-to supplier for an entire generation of Capetonians who want to make better choices about the provenance of their food - especially meat. Trigger Warning: We talk about killing and eating animals quite a bit in this episode. By the time this episode is released, I sure hope we have an answer to who won the 2024 presidential election. I wanted to take a few minutes to explain my strategy of how I have handled this current election cycle, highlighting what I have done and, more importantly what I have not done. While tuning out the noise of the election is hard, patience and long-term strategies must win out vs. over-reactive decision-making based on political outcomes. Market performance is not solely dictated by what party is in power but rather by fundamental company performance and economic indicators. I encourage you to focus on your financial plan and the best ways to achieve it through our spending, savings, and investment strategies. Steve Parry - Won't You Believe? (incl. Dachshund Remix) - Selador Early support from John Digweed, Frankey & Sandrino, Khen, Bog, Eelke Kleijn, Hernan Cattaneo, Nick Warren, Jim Rivers, James Harcourt, Yulia Niko, Nicole Moudaber, Spencer Brown, Just Her, AFFKT, Anthony Pappa It is, of course, no surprise that there Selador catalogue is peppered with stellar contributions from Da Boss (job share) Steve Parry. Indeed, many of them are undoubtedly among our finest moments – tracks like ‘Fenner', ‘303V' and ‘Squidfist' are both close to our hearts and the signal for serious dancefloor carnage whenever dropped. Over the last couple of years, Steve has focused on some choice collabs – among them his ‘Marmalade Skies' hook up with Renato Cohen, one of the label's biggest tunes in The Year of Big Tunes that was our 10th birthday; while the Nunchi Coup team up with partner Dave Seaman produced a trio of big hitters that racked up the streams. However, Steve's last solo outing was (checks notes…) – 2020?! Parry, you lazy &*£*&$!!! Anyway, “we'll deal with that internally”. The good news is that while the follow-up to that year's mighty double header of ‘Roll the Dice' and ‘What You Make It' may fall into the “long awaited” bracket, it certainly fits the “worth the wait” bill. In true Ste Pazza style, it morphs genres for fun – it's deep but squelchily acidic, heads down progmungous but with the catchiest of ‘light touch' vocal hooks, all riding atop a techno train. Meanwhile, we're delighted to usher another label debutant through the door marked ‘so delighted to have you on board' – yes sireee, Dachshund is in the building. What's more, he delivers a remix which does what too many re-rubs don't do – it acknowledges and utilises key elements from the original version. However, it does so while effortlessly blending in a plethora of fresh riffage, from the melodic to the klangtastic. Bullseye. Team Selador – You better believe it! x

Bullseye. Team Selador – You better believe it! x

Do you believe the U.S. government is going bankrupt? It's becoming more of a common question as our national debt levels have ballooned to epic proportions. It might even conjure up emotions of fear if you listen to mainstream media sources. However, if we go beyond the headlines, we will find that the U.S. is not going bankrupt, and we should likely be thankful for the wealth we have created in part from our increase in national debt. I call on my friend and economic expert Cullen Roche's writing to help us see that America's fiscal health is far from critical. Why the government, with its monetary might and 'printing press' capability as seen during the COVID crisis, cannot go bankrupt like a typical household. Welcome to a special "Emotional Balance Sheet" graduation episode where we're diving into real-world advice for all the fresh graduates. Congratulations on this incredible milestone in your life! Now, let's talk about what comes next. While the world often echoes Steve Jobs' famous 2005 Stanford speech urging graduates to follow their passion, today, we will shake things up and challenge that narrative. Instead, I encourage you to pursue what you enjoy and what can sustain you financially because passion alone doesn't pay the bills. To help get you started with this next phase of life, I have brought in one of my favorite writers, Morgan Housel. Morgan wrote an article that provides unsolicited advice to recent college grads, which I wanted to share with you today, sprinkled in with a few thoughts of my own. The beauty of this advice in typical Morgan fashion is that it applies to adults who could be in the prime of their careers. https://amzn.to/3WCWNdy Though multilingual learners (MLs) comprise nearly 25% of the school-age population, the most widely-used social emotional learning (SEL) frameworks and programs lack an intentional focus on these students' unique strengths and challenges. To foster MLs' academic success and wellbeing, educators must consider students' cultures, languages, assets, expectations, norms, and life experiences when integrating SEL practices. In this groundbreaking book, Dr. Diane Staehr Fenner and Mindi Teich break down how each of the five competencies in the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) SEL framework can be implemented with ML success in mind. Staehr Fenner and Teich's practical and engaging guide provides SEL considerations that are unique to MLs, relevant research, easy-to-implement educator actions, and tools to seamlessly integrate SEL practices into content and language instruction.

Here are a few key takeaways Mentors can deliver more than business lessons, How you define family is up to you, As Darrell always used to say, “Plan the work and work the plan.” Connect with Paul Contact Paul here or schedule a time to meet with Paul here. The episode title is the name of a book by Henning Fenger. It seeks to establish that Soren's life has a good amount of fiction in it, in terms of Soren's own presentation of his life story. I dispute a decent amount of Fenner's allegations. By seeking to correct a series of errors, he seems to commit his own errors in interpreting Soren's life and writings. I don't entirely dismiss all of Fenner's points. But, neither do I accept them on the whole. This episode incorporates the “Remember Your Creator” admonition by The Preacher and Soren.

#117 Choc the system mit Christian Fenner von nucaoLecker. Cremig. Talk about going after low-hanging fruit. Afresh is an AI startup that helps grocery stores and retailers reduce food waste by making supply chains more efficient. In the latest episode of NVIDIA's AI Podcast, host Noah Kravitz spoke with the company's cofounder and president, Nathan Fenner, about its mission, offerings and the greater challenge of eliminating food waste. Most supply chain and inventory management offerings targeting grocers and retailers are outdated. Fenner and his team noticed those solutions, built for the nonperishable side of the business, didn't work as well on the fresh side — creating enormous amounts of food waste and causing billions in lost profits. The team first sought to solve the store-replenishment challenge by developing a platform to help grocers decide how much fresh produce to order to optimize costs while meeting demand. They created machine learning and AI models that could effectively use the data generated by fresh produce, which is messier than data generated by nonperishable goods because of factors like time to decay, greater demand fluctuation and unreliability caused by lack of barcodes, leading to incorrect scans at self-checkout registers. The result was a fully integrated, machine learning-based platform that helps grocers make informed decisions at each node of the operations process. The company also recently launched inventory management software that allows grocers to save time and increase data accuracy by intelligently tracking inventory. That information can be inputted back into the platform's ordering solution, further refining the accuracy of inventory data. It's all part of Afresh's greater mission to tackle climate change. “The most impactful thing we can do is reduce food waste to mitigate climate change,” Fenner said. “It's really one of the key things that brought me into the business: I think I've always had a keen eye to work in the climate space. It's really motivating for a lot of our team, and it's a key part of our mission.”

One aspect or secret to happiness can be found through strategic spending— not just spending on possessions or experiences but on what truly holds purpose in your life. It's not about how much money you have, but how you spend it significantly affects your happiness. Research supports the idea that spending money on experiences rather than things leads to greater happiness, as the novelty of new possessions tends to fade quickly. Additionally, trying to keep up with wealthier peers, even if you're relatively well-off, can lead to dissatisfaction and unhealthy spending habits. To enhance your happiness and financial stability, align your spending with your purpose and long-term life objectives. This might involve investing in people, causes, or long-term projects you care about. When we mismanage our money or our spending patterns go awry, we can feel sick and broke. How you spend your money and your physical health can have a strong correlation. When you spend money in a way that serves the purposes you intend it for, you can create happiness as well as financial stability. What causes a 3-year-old colt to freeze under the slightest amount of pressure? I've invited renowned equine behaviorist, Dr. Kate Fenner, to talk about what can cause a horse to "shut down" (and how it's more common than you might think!). We'll also talk about how to help the horse recover, prevention, and what her research has revealed to help improve training methods for horses. But first... I have an exciting surprise announcement that's happening right now at my ranch—and believe me when I say that no one was more surprised than me! And in the “What the Hay? Q&A” segment, my friend and assistant trainer, T. Cody, joins me to ask a question about a horse recently that left his rider in the dirt. Plus, I'll answer a question from a rider whose horse unexpectedly lays down and rolls—with her in the saddle! Want your question answered in What the Hay?
