Last month I recorded a special episode of Checkpoints live from the All Your Base festival in Nottingham. One of my guests was Paul Kilduff-Taylor who I ended up hanging about with a bunch over the weekend and we had a lovely time so I asked him back for a full episode. Wholesome af.Paul is one of the co-founders of mode7 games - creators of Frozen Synapse and the upcoming Forzen Synapse 2 - and while music is his specialty, he has a hand in all aspects of design. In a wonderfully meandering chat we hit on some timely networking tips in the run up to GDC, how mash ups are the internet's first musical genre, sword fighting games for the Novint Falcon, the satisfaction of games that linger in your brain when you're not playing them, how much of a gamer his mum was growing up, the excellent music of Nintendo World Cup, why Half Life 2 maybe isn't as good as you think it is and Noel, the mysterious employee at a Canadian Electronics Boutique. God. We. So... So here's the thing. We. Hrm. Incredibly deep breath. When we first discussed doing this new end of year format, one of the things we liked about the focus on podcast discussions was that they would be a tight, focused way to critically dig into our favorites while still keeping the discursive flexibility of conversation between friends. The plan was for each of these to be between 30 minutes and an hour long, regardless of if we were doing an episode on a single game or one on our respective top 10 lists.Natalie and I went for nearly three hours. Look.On the plus side: This means that we had ample time to dive into everything we wanted to talk about but didn't have the chance to yet this year. We talk Red Dead Redemption 2, the critical apparatus of the game's industry, and the terrible power of polish. We talk anime gacha games and the pull of comfort play. We talk about giant robots, queer bodies, and utopian ontologies. And, uh, we spent the final 45 minutes or so of the podcast going deep into Undertale spoiler territory.I guess what I'm saying is: Thank you for your patience. And enjoy?Discussed: Into the Breach, BattleTech, Monster Hunter: World, Hollow Knight, Hitman 2, Minit, Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!, Sea of Thieves, No Man's Sky: NEXT, Heaven Will Be Mine, Picross 2, Ashen, Frozen Synapse 2, Slay the Spire, Valkyria Chronicles 4, Tetris Effect, Dead Cells, Undertale, Bloodborne, Danmachi Memoria Freize, Lego Harry Potter: Years 1–4, Lego Harry Potter: Years 5-7, Minecraft, Unexplored, Celeste See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Kole, Ben, Dennis, and David talk about the PlayStation Classic lineup reveal, Super Mario Party, and we ask you about the dumbest ways you've died in video games. Resident Evil 4, the REmake, and Resident Evil 0 are coming to Switch. The Multiplayer: What's the dumbest way you've died in a game? The Grind: Dennis: WipeOut Omega Collection (VR). On Waypoint Radio 194, Danielle, Rob, and Patrick talk about games where a major character was enough to pull them through some questionable gameplay. We have a horror corner, a Lucy Lawless Appreciation Moment AND a bonus dad corner this week, and a brief (and funky) dip into the question bucket to round things out.Assassin's Creed Odyssey, Soma, Mass Effect, Dragon Age Origins, Assassin's Creed Origins, Alien: Isolation, Everyone's Gone to the Rapture, Gabriel Knight series, Thimbleweed Park, Deadly Premonition, D4, Remedy games, Alan Wake, Frozen Synapse 2, Xena: Warrior Princess. UK-based Mode 7 Games was founded by Paul Kilduff-Taylor and Ian Hardingham and is best known for creating top-down turn-based tactical combat titles, Frozen Synapse and Frozen Synapse 2. They’ve also applied the turn-based strategic treatment to a futuristic sports title in the form of Frozen Cortex and, before any of that, they created Determinance, a sword-fighting multiplayer title in which you fly around crossing blades and wits using one-to-one mouse movements to drive combat. In addition to developing its own titles, Mode 7 is making forays into publishing games. Tokyo 42, developed by creative partnership Smac Games, is the first game to be released by Mode 7 acting in a publisher capacity. Here, Paul Kilduff-Taylor talks about his creative roles as musician, writer, designer and business developer, the useful lessons of perceived failure and how to stand out from the crowd. He begins by explaining how Mode 7 transitioned from flying sword-fights to turn-based tactics. On this episode of the fortnightly Waypoint UK Podcast, senior ed sort Mike Diver and regular co-conspirator Kate Gray are joined by Paul Kilduff-Taylor of Oxford's Mode 7 Games, to discuss the studio's forthcoming releases: Frozen Synapse 2 and Tokyo 42. The former is the sequel to Mode 7's breakout hit of 2011, a simultaneous tactics strategy game that's honestly easier to play than it is to properly explain, which earned massively celebratory reviews from the likes of Edge and Eurogamer. Well done, that game. Frozen Synapse 2 promises to deliver “open-world tactics” when it comes out later in 2017, and looked pretty grand from the whole five minutes of it that I saw at this year's Rezzed. Probably out before that is (the pictured above) Tokyo 42, made by the two-man team of SMAC Games and the first game to be published by Mode 7. Now this I did play a fair chunk of at Rezzed, and while my keyboard control skills are... Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

The Sausage Factory interviews Paul Taylor of UK based outfit Mode 7 Games about Frozen Endzone, their follow up title to the astoundingly excellent Frozen Synapse. The game is a simultaneous turn based future sports title that pits robots against one another to place a glowing ball into the opposing teams end zone. Like Frozen Synapse it relies on the player plotting moves before they are executed and they must sit back and watch to see how their plans bring about success or failure. The game is out in a Beta form and people can buy the game on pre-order and gain early access to it with the aim of helping the developer turn it into something rather special. Much is discussed during this interview with highlights including the musical influences of Mode 7 Games and how they see the trend of early access products impacting on the development and reselling of games. http://media.blubrry.com/caneandrinse/caneandrinse.com/sausage/TSF_Episode04.mp3 Edited by Chris O'Regan
