Today's episode is a heavy yet necessary topic: creativity as activism. When two Black Democratic lawmakers were expelled from the House of Representatives in Tennessee for joining a peaceful anti-gun violence protest, I began to reflect on the ways I have used my creativity as activism. In this episode, I share a poem I wrote during the height of the Black Lives Matter movement (TRIGGER WARNING: death) and I share my thoughts about how to care for your mental health as a creative activist. He will dive and discover with us and himself into the unknown and exciting deep ocean of the creative mind. In this podcast Schlich talks with singer and songwriter Matthew Robb. Robb's lyrical style of song poetry developed from a love of old-time country blues and his early years as a spoken word performance artist. Alongside his distinctive take on the americana genre coupled with intelligent and thought provoking songwriting he regularly tours and performs internationally with his band but also solo when called for. Matthew has up to now released three well-acclaimed albums and currently lives with his family in Cologne, Germany in a self-built home made from reclaimed material. Albums can take time to ripen. For around thirty years the Cologne-based singer-songwriter has been making music. Now at the age of 48, he is releasing his first record. But the waiting was worthwhile. Bob Dylan himself could learn a thing or two from these 9 finely crafted songs. Influenced by the country blues, Matthew Robb's musical arrangements grab your attention with their sheer simplicity. His voice, guitar and harp awaken the great traditional folk music of the American West. Without exception though, it's the profound scope and depth of his lyrics that really make the compositions so contemporary and outstanding, Like a thread running through the album, the song poet speaks to the disillusionment of people living amongst the greed, procrastination and general malaise of a materialistic society, with themes as varied as modern-day slavery and the death of a close friend from alcoholism. However, despite this melancholic backdrop, Robb's songs radiate a great hope that within mankind there lies a strength to lay that burden down.As in the River, which says “There is a river that runs through you”Erik Prochnow https://folker.de/rezis/rezensionen.php?ausgabe=201706®ion=euSchlich is Visual Artist, Film Maker and Ritual Designer, living and loving in West Cork and best known for his Essay about the Cause and Effect of Shamanism, Art and Digital Culture and the video installation of Transodin´s Tragedy.

In this episode Ngaynia (Linda) and Justin are joined by Yariah Myers. Yariah is a young woman from Illinois. Just before the George Floyd murder and protests that ensued, Yariah had relocated to Minnesota. You'll hear us talk about that and her experience since moving to Minnesota. Inspired through all of these experiences Yariah wrote her first spoken word piece, titled Tell Us. And wow, is it moving! Look out for a separate video and recording of the poem by itself. Yariah also shared with all of us the story of Eric Lurry from Joliet, Illinois. Skip to the 36 minute mark to hear that story in particular. Eric Lurry was brutally murdered by Joliet police, found in the parking lot of the Police Station. @TTLYRIAH

Peteh Muhammad Haroon, affectionally known as Brotha’ P, is an inspirational Spoken Word Performance and recording artist and native of New Orleans, LA. Brotha’ P has been performing his unique style of poetry since 1995 as a member of Nommo Literary Society. After leaving Louisiana in 2005, Brotha’ P moved to Jonesboro, Arkansas, where he was reconnected to the world of agriculture–a world he was introduced to as a child. As a student of Arkansas State University, Brotha’ P, along with others who were interested in growing their own food, established a Student Garden Organization. The intentions of the organization were for the garden to grow into a place where students without an agricultural background could have a place to experience a hands-on food growing course and learn to start and maintain a home garden. After being elected and serving as the first President of the organization for a year, Brotha’ P decided to return to New Orleans to pursue his burning passion to establish gardens throughout local neighborhoods. Spending countless hours under the sun volunteering at the Village Ova da River and the Teche Street Garden, he was offered the opportunity to serve as a landscaper with Common Ground Health Care Clinic. Currently, Brotha’ P is working with New Orleans Food and Farm Network and others local organizations such as the Backyard Gardener’s Network to create sustainable green spaces throughout the city of New Orleans. For more information, Brotha’ P can be reached by email at anotherfamilyproduction@yahoo.com. This episode is sponsored The Hearst Ranch. “I’m looking forward to getting back into [New Orleans] and helping them, I grew up with those people . . .it is my full intent to help any backyard garden in the lower 9th Ward.” –Brotha’ P on Greenhorn Radio
