Dog breeds get stereotypes. There's the well-heeled, intelligent border collie or the good-natured, but not-so-bright golden retriever. Jennifer Holland's new book, Dog Smart digs into what we actually know about dog intelligence. And: In recent years, honeybee-keeping has seen an impressive increase in the U.S. The rising numbers means more beekeepers are concerned with viruses that threaten hives. Wei-Fone Huang is studying honey bee pathogens and hopes to find novel solutions to fight them. Later in the show: If you grew up with pets, you probably had a local vet who saw every pet in town. Vets offices used to be pretty mom and pop. Lisa Scott says that these days, they're way more specialized and operate a lot closer to the way human medicine does, with vet techs–like nurses–doing a lot of the work. Plus: Pet ownership is up and it's getting harder and harder to find medical care for beloved animal friends. Megan Taliaferro explains why there's a shortage in veterinary care and how she's working to address it. Megan Taliaferro was named an Outstanding Faculty member by The State Council of Higher Education for Virginia.

We all hit a wall sometimes as clinicians, don't we? Daniel Shaw, M.S., CCC-SLP, joins host Sara MacIntyre, M.A., CCC-SLP, to brainstorm ideas for when we feel stuck as clinicians. They emphasize the importance of acknowledging and normalizing navigating clinician problem-solving moments, even among seasoned clinicians! They share ideas and resources that have helped them regroup or change course to meet their clients' needs. Daniel and Sara take an intentionally informal, conversational approach in this episode, bringing listeners into what would be a very typical 'phone a friend' clinical problem-solving conversation they have together as colleagues and collaborators. They share clinical examples and favorite resources back and forth, acknowledge their own areas of continued growth, and hopefully normalize the problem-solving and troubleshooting process for all clinicians!Resource mentioned:Implementing Cognitive Behavioral Therapy with School-Aged Children Who Stutter with Lisa Scott, Ph.D., CCC-SLPDaniel Shaw, M.S., CCC-SLP, is a speech-language pathologist at the Vanderbilt Bill Wilkerson Center in Nashville, TN, where he serves children, teens, and adults who stutter (along with their families). Vulnerability is finding the courage to expose oneself's weakness or injury despite the possibility of emotional or physical attack or harm. We have to allow ourselves to be seen despite the chance of being viewed negatively. We fear that our worst makes us unworthy, unlovable and separate. Time to shed the armor and get real. We are wired for struggle. Shame, fear and worthiness often keep us from living our best lives and revealing our true, authentic selves. To be vulnerable is to love. To be vulnerable is true power. We want to thank everyone who responded to our question of what's your definition of vulnerability? Vulnerability is a choice. You can learn how to be more vulnerable. Without a willingness nothing is possible. Take a deep breath and step into the unknown. Special thanks to Katie(75), Valéry Brosseau(86), Lisa Scott(110), Makayla's(134) mom Heather, Angela "the Shark Whisperer",Anonymous listener, Axton and Autumn. This episode is not an interview. So, here is the backstory. In the second week of April 2021, I was feeling deep emotional pain and heartache. I've been in the process of understanding and uncovering my own childhood issues and trauma. I had heard Gabor Mate and other Legendaries mention parent-child attachments during early years and how it shapes our relationships with ourselves and with others when we grow older. I searched “attachment” on Spotify and this new podcast from Lisa Scott popped up. As I started listening—I was completely thrilled and it resonated with me so much that I could go back (in my mind) to my childhood and see some deep things with less resistance and better clarity. I reached out to Lisa Scott and asked her to publish her attachment series on this podcast. This series has 4 parts: anxious, fearful-avoidant, dismissive-avoidant, and secure attachment Lisa Scott is a licensed professional counselor and host of her own podcast, What's Next With Lisa Scott. Lisa is well known for her solution-based and client-focused style of therapy. Aside from hosting her own podcast, Lisa owns a private practice and is a professor of psychology. With over fifteen years of experience as a mental health professional and experience ranging from crisis intervention in a clinical setting to working with families and individuals, Lisa's passion and focus remain on empowering people to establish healthy loving relationships not only with themselves but with others in their life.
