"I forgive him and I am willing to give all the grace in the world to him." "If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything." In episode 400 of the Better Call Daddy Reena Friedman Watts sits down with Lunden Roberts whose journey through love, motherhood, and resilience is both heart-wrenching and inspiring. She opens up about her deeply personal memoir, written as a gift for her daughter, Navy, to understand the complexities of her relationship with Hunter Biden. The conversation delves into the emotional depths of her experiences, from falling in love to facing the challenges of raising her daughter amidst public scrutiny. She candidly discusses the raw emotions captured in her book, including her struggles with mental health and the profound impact of her father, a prominent figure in the hunting industry, on her life. Her father's influence taught her empathy and integrity, values she hopes to pass on to her daughter. The episode also explores her vibrant past, from a small-town upbringing to the culture shock of moving to Washington D.C., and how these experiences shaped her perspective on life. (00:00) You've done some big interviews. It's been nerve wracking (00:40) Do you feel like you were harsh enough in Hunter Biden book (03:14) You say in the book that you. You are your father's daughter (07:20) The reward of being a mother is greater than any of the luxuries (10:20) Do you think that's though, like, your claim to fame now (14:49) Both of my phones mysteriously crashed when I found out I was pregnant (17:23) Lunden says her parents have reservations about reading the book (23:29) That is a tremendous battle to fight. It's incredible. I wouldn't even know who would know how to navigate that (28:42) Lunden says he hasn't reached out to his daughter since the book (32:49) Most of those peers I would never have wanted to do around children (33:12) It was hard to write about Hunter's addiction (36:58) Lunden says her daughter saw Donald Trump on TV months ago (45:23) The only thing I wanted from the paternity suit was accountability (52:31) How many times did you have to edit this book? (57:59) Dad almost stepped on baby cotton mouths or copperheads one time (58:43) What was it like moving back home and kind of like needing your parents again (59:34) There's nothing greater than having a child and watching your parents be grandparents (01:00:32) Do you hope that your daughter's relationship with Hunter will flourish (01:05:12) I let Hunter know that it had happened. And Hunter immediately scheduled, like, can we. As homeschooling grows, so does the conversation about how education is defined. Join Dr. Timberly Baker (Associate Professor of Educational Leadership at Arkansas State University) and Jim Mason, HSLDA President, in a discussion on challenging the traditional view of schooling. Many prospective and novice homeschool families can feel insurmountable pressure to create a structured, 8-to-3 schedule. This doesn't need to be! Parents are their child's first teacher, guiding their learning every day! Learning can (and does!) take place anywhere, and a rigid schedule isn't required. The possibilities of homeschooling are endless, and each student's experience is unique. “I often say that we are our children's first teacher. So you've already done much of this work in terms of teaching them what you think that they need to know. You do it all the time anyway! We have to disrupt our thinking that schooling happens in this sort of 8 to 3 structure only, and that if it's not that, then it's not a school, right? And so, once we get to helping folks disrupt that notion, then it becomes a much broader conversation about the possibility of being able to homeschool”—Dr. Timberly Baker

Lucy Barnhouse of Arkansas State University talks with Jana Byars about her new book, Hospitals in Communities of the Late Medieval Rhineland: Houses of God, Places for the Sick, out 2023 with Amsterdam University Press. From the mid-twelfth century onwards, the development of European hospitals was shaped by their claim to the legal status of religious institutions, with its attendant privileges and responsibilities. The questions of whom hospitals should serve and why they should do so have recurred -- and been invested with moral weight -- in successive centuries, though similarities between medieval and modern debates on the subject have often been overlooked. Hospitals' legal status as religious institutions could be tendentious and therefore had to be vigorously defended in order to protect hospitals' resources. This status could also, however, be invoked to impose limits on who could serve in and be served by hospitals. As recent scholarship demonstrates, disputes over whom hospitals should serve, and how, find parallels in other periods of history and current debates. Learn more about your ad choices. Term limits for legislators, both in Congress and at the state level, are extremely popular among voters, and have been, since their heyday in the 1990s. And while we don't currently have term limits on members of Congress, they do exist in 16 states. What can we learn from the state legislatures that already have them? Do they deliver on their promises? We talk with Carlos Algara, assistant professor of political science at Claremont Graduate University, where he studies political parties, electoral accountability, and legislative behavior, and Jordan Butcher, assistant professor of political science at Arkansas State University, where she studies state legislatures. She is the author of the forthcoming book Navigating Term Limits.
