Welcome to Top of the Morning by Mint.. I'm Nelson John and here are today's top stories. SOUTH AFRICA RUSHES TO AVOID US TARIFF HIT South Africa is racing to avert the US's steepest sub-Saharan tariff yet — 30% on some exports. Pretoria says it's ready to offer a “broad, generous” trade deal, including more imports of US poultry, blueberries, and pork, to save an estimated 30,000 jobs in an economy with 33.2% unemployment. Agriculture Minister John Steenhuisen and Trade Minister Parks Tau argue SA exports — just 0.25% of US imports — aren't a threat. Talks, however, are tangled with US concerns over SA's land reform and race-based job laws, which Trump has criticised. Steenhuisen calls it a “new era” of tariffs tied to politics, while Tau brands the process “unprecedented” and outside WTO norms. New Delhi has told carriers to be ready, with an announcement expected at the SCO summit in China. IndiGo is already preparing. Flights were halted after the 2020 Galwan Valley clashes that froze ties. Recent thaw: India resumed tourist visas for Chinese nationals and agreed to restart the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra. ULTRAVIOLETTE CHARGES UP WITH $21M FUNDING Bengaluru-based premium e-motorcycle maker Ultraviolette has raised $21M, led by Japan's TDK Ventures, with continued backing from Zoho, Lingotto, and notable angel investors. Funds will scale manufacturing, R&D, and expand retail from 20 to 100 cities. CEO Narayan Subramaniam says the TDK tie-up accelerates its push for advanced batteries, intelligent systems, and global expansion. NEW TAX ERA FOR INDIA Parliament has passed the Income Tax Bill, 2025, replacing the 1961 Act from April 1, 2026. The rewrite halves the law's size to 536 sections, swaps “assessment year” for “tax year,” reintroduces some deductions, and keeps tax rates unchanged. It enables tech-driven faceless assessments but retains search-and-seizure powers, raising privacy concerns. The Bill now awaits the President's assent. ₹18,500 CR PUSH FOR CHIPS, POWER & METRO The Union Cabinet has cleared ₹18,500 crore for manufacturing and infrastructure. Democratic Alliance leader John Steenhuisen has criticized the upcoming National Dialogue, calling it an "insider stitch-up" aimed at boosting the ANC's electoral prospects. Speaking at the DA's headquarters in Bruma, east of Johannesburg, Steenhuisen labeled the initiative "illegitimate" and lacking credibility. The DA was the first party to pull out of the dialogue following the dismissal of its deputy minister of Trade and Industry, Andrew Whitfield, by President Cyril Ramaphosa. The Thabo Mbeki Foundation and other legacy foundations have also withdrawn, citing concerns over funding.
Minister of Agriculture John Steenhuisen speaks to Lester Kiewit about the looming 30% tariff on South African exports to the U.S., recently announced by President Donald Trump and set to take effect on 1 August 2025. Steenhuisen warns the tariff could cripple local agriculture - impacting citrus, wine, grapes, nuts and more - and severely harm the economy and jobs. He also believes it signals the unofficial end of AGOA, the trade agreement that has long granted South Africa duty-free access to U.S. markets. While President Ramaphosa has called for continued negotiations and challenged the basis of the tariff, Steenhuisen says urgent economic reforms are now essential to soften the blow and build long-term resilience. In today's BizNews Briefing, Cyril Ramaphosa vows the national dialogue will proceed without the DA, as John Steenhuisen hits back at Thabo Mbeki's criticism. Deputy President Paul Mashatile highlights tensions threatening the GNU's stability, while Trump's looming tariffs send shockwaves through South Africa's citrus industry. Plus, Bloomberg questions whether BRICS can fill the global void left by a retreating America.
President Cyril Ramaphosa has launched a scathing attack on DA Leader John Steenhuisen. This for the decision to withdraw from the National Dialogue. Ramaphosa's rebuke comes in the wake of former President Thabo Mbeki's open letter to Steenhuisen. The aim of the much talked National Dialogue is to bring South Africans from all walks of life together to discuss the kind of South Africa they want. Speaking on the side-lines of the state visit by Austrian President, Alexander van der Bellen at the Union Buildings in Pretoria, Ramaphosa says the National Dialogue would probably be successful without the participation of the DA and its diversionary inputs. Our Politics Reporter Ntebo Mokobo has more.
