Biya Simbassa took many American track and field fans by surprise on Sunday morning when they awoke to results from the Valencia Marathon and saw that the 31-year-old notched a personal best by nearly four minutes to run 2:06:53. The performance was good for 17th place in the race but moved him to No. 4 on the U.S. all-time list. Only Khalid Khannouchi (2:05:38), Galen Rupp (2:06:07) and Ryan Hall (2:06:17) have run faster. Back in 2022, we paid a visit to Flagstaff, Ariz. for a video featuring Simbassa and also recorded a podcast episode detailing his career path from being born in Ethiopia, moving to the United States in 2007 and then going through the school system. He started running in high school in Minnesota and then continued his development at Iowa Central Community College before transferring to Oklahoma. After graduating, he was coached by Scott Simmons in Colorado Springs before signing a pro contract with Under Armour to be part of the Dark Sky Distance Project with coach Stephen Haas. In 2023, Simbassa started working with Hall as his coach. The partnership lasted until this summer before Hall decided to step back from coaching. Simbassa worked with Ian Carter (a McKirdy Trained coach, who also was coached by Hall) for the Valencia Marathon build-up. CITIUS MAG spoke with Simbassa on Thursday afternoon to get details on how the performance came about. "(In 2016), I thought it was cool to be in Eugene for the Olympic Trials. I was still young. I was not a fast athlete in the field. I just had a good experience after that race and from there, I was like, 'OK. I want to be better. I want to be the top athlete. I want to make Team USA.' I started playing with my mind like that and just reminding myself I can be one of those guys." My guest for this episode is Biya Simbassa. We recorded this back in late March. Bear with us since we had a couple of microphone and audio issues that kept this episode pent away for the past couple of weeks. We did our best to repair it and still wanted to share his story with you all. Biya is a professional runner for the newly rebranded Under Armour Mission Run Dark Sky Distance team based in Flagstaff, Arizona and coached by Stephen Haas. Biya was last year's USATF Running Circuit champion with solid performances week after week on the roads including personal bests in distances from 5K to the half marathon. He also finished seventh at the U.S. Olympic Trials in the 10,000 meters despite being one of the last men entered in the race. This year, he finished 11th at the U.S. Championships. We touched on how he wants to improve this year both on the track and the roads but also dive into his upbringing being the son of an Ethiopian refugee, going through JUCO before landing at Oklahoma and then navigating his career post-collegiately. On Wednesday 12-15-21 Presidents Ping and Putin met by video summit to discuss issues such as Ukraine, U.S. aggression, and China helping Russia with the fallout if it invaded Ukraine, namely financial sanctions and U.N. Security Council Veto. Unlike the U.S. and its allies who are exercising a diplomatic boycott of Olympic Games, Russia and China will be in full attendance. There were no formal alliances declared between the two nations, but each voiced support for the other. The issue of China-Taiwan- U.S. relations though not formally and publicly disclosed also are a hit button. GWU Prof. Charles Glasser, Former State Dept. official Stephen Haas, and Russia politics Professor Sam Greene join the podcast discussion.

Today on the podcast I was super fortunate to chat to Stephen Haas. Stephen has worked for Total Sports Management for the past 10 plus years. He is also a high level distance running coach of many athletes including the Under Armour sponsored professional running team; Dark Sky Distance, based in Flagstaff, Arizona. Prior to the recording of this podcast I hit Luke Matthew’s (top Aussie 800/1500 star and Total Sports Management athlete) up for a couple of hard hitting questions to throw at Haas. Thanks Lukey! Prior to becoming an athlete manager and coach, Stephen was an incredible runner himself having run for the University of Indiana in Bloomington, where he was a big 10 Champion at 5k and a 3 time All American who broke a few of Bob Kennedy’s school records! Out of college Haas ran professionally for New Balance running 13:33 for 5000m, 28:20 for 10,000m and 2:18:45 for the marathon. This interview is a great insight into the life of an athlete agent and this side of professional running. Thanks Stephen Haas!

“At the end of the day, I stepped away and I took on this mindset of ‘I’m not just a runner’ and I wanted to do other shit whether it was in work or outside of work. I wanted to distance myself from this world. The biggest thing I’ve learned from meeting people away from the sport and having experiences removed from the sport of running is that I am a runner at my core and it’s OK to admit that running is something really special. To be able to call yourself a runner is amazing. To be able to have the chance to do it at a high level – maybe even do it as your job or represent your country – besides it being something you love so much and naturally have a disposition for is a gift that maybe you shouldn’t throw away. I learned that being away from the sport. When I was in the sport, I was super frustrated like ‘Fuck this. I’m hurt all the time. This is bullshit.’ The time where I “treated my body to death” any epiphanies that I might have had have pulled me back into the sport. Now, I can look at it and say I am a runner at my core and that’s pretty cool.” Just a while ago, I was scrolling through Instagram and a poster for what looked like a concert festival came up but instead, it was for 'The Not Dead Yet Comeback Tour' and it was Ciarán ó Lionáird announcing his comeback to professional running. It looks serious. He’s working with agent and coach Stephen Haas in Flagstaff Arizona and he’s working out with Edward Cheserek. So I wanted to know more about this comeback. We decided to jump on a call where we discuss this, his disappointment in 2012, a series of injuries, time away from the sport, adjusting to the real world and what will ultimately make this all worth it even if there is no Olympics. This one goes out to all the listeners who want to rekindle that flame in training and sharpen their mindset for a comeback. Follow Ciarán and keep up with his comeback on Instagram.
