Pursuing an education is a political act. Working in a registrar's office means providing service. In the currently divisive political climate, with an ever diversifying student (and faculty and staff) population, how can we provide the kind of servant leadership our communities need?Key Takeaways:Being a servant leader is about treating people with respect, putting others' needs ahead of your own, listening, being empathetic, and building community. The coming years are going to be a challenge for higher education and so each of us needs to take care of ourselves, but also look out for and support one another. That includes our staff, faculty, and students. Engaging in positive action outside the office can help maintain a sense of control, a sense of purpose, and a commitment to service. in this episode we talk to Nate Samuelson from Korea International School about his project called Service Snapshots and a course he created called ‘Design Your Impact'. Not only will your students be invited to participate, you are encouraged to replicate Nate's ideas in your own school or region. Imagine a school district or an IB regional association creating their own version of the Service Snapshots concept. Either way, Nate's collection of student service projects will serve as a repository of great ideas that might be the spark your students need to develop their own, local service initiative. Dr. Clytrice Watson is a professor of Biology and the Associate Provost for Academic and Student Service at Delaware State University. Throughout her twenty plus years in higher education, she navigated through the academic ranks to full professor and has served in many capacities. She completed a 2-year rotation with the National Science Foundation as a Program Officer for the Historically Black Colleges and Universities Undergraduate Program (HBCU-UP) in the Directorate for Education and Human Resources and is a Society of STEM Women of Color board member www.sswoc.org. Dr. Watson discusses her career ascension and the highs and lows of interpersonal interactions along the way. There is much more to the job than student-faculty interactions. We have to work with peers, senior faculty, and leaders. It can be particularly rewarding but encountering "mean girls" can be crushing. Navigating interpersonal interactions in higher ed can be rewarding if you have the right support. Dr. Watson provides tips for surviving challenging situations such as reflecting on your purpose, engaging your external network, and assessing the campus environment.
