Christy Brodeur (Project Adventure) and Chris Damboise (High 5) join Phil to discuss the lesser known history of challenge courses. The discussion covers the contributions of Georges Hébert, Yvonne Moreau, the development of obstacle courses, and the integration of challenge courses into Outward Bound and Project Adventure. The conversation also touches on the role of women in the history of challenge courses and the transition from military-focused training to educational and team development purposes. The guests highlight the importance of understanding the historical context and origins of challenge courses in order to have meaningful discussions about accessibility and diversity in the field. It discusses how challenge courses were initially developed as a way to prepare soldiers for war and how they later transitioned into educational and recreational settings. The conversation also touches on the commercialization of challenge courses and the need for practitioners to be intentional and inclusive in their approach. The key themes include the historical context of challenge courses, the impact of culture and community, and the importance of accessibility and inclusivity.   Challenge courses have their origins in military training and physical fitness, specifically in the French military and the experiences of Georges Hébert. The development of challenge courses involved the transformation of military training methods into educational and team development tools. The history of challenge courses includes the contributions of women, although their roles have often been overlooked or minimized. Understanding the historical context and origins of challenge courses is important for discussions about accessibility and diversity in the field. Challenge courses have their roots in military training and the Outward Bound model, which incorporated service projects as part of the experience. The development of challenge courses was influenced by the need to prepare soldiers for war and the realization that traditional sports alone were not sufficient for combat readiness. Challenge courses have evolved to be used in educational and recreational settings, but it is important for practitioners to be intentional and inclusive in their approach. The commercialization of challenge courses has led to a pay-to-play model, which can limit access for certain communities. Efforts should be made to make challenge courses more accessible and culturally relevant. This year, the FFA annual school-wide service project is a canned food drive with all donations going to the Food Bank at the Tippah County-based Good Samaritan Center. Doland FFA Avery Miles - Chapter President of the Doland FFA Chapter in Doland, South Dakota Starting this year the Doland FFA Chapter decorated the town's park on Main Street for Christmas.  The emphasis is on lights, but there is also a beautifully lit up FFA logo at the front of the display tying the community, Christmas and the local chapter all together.  This project began with a $500 grant that was received from the South Dakota FFA Association, and it was quickly matched the Doland FFA Alumi Association.  This is Avery's final year at Doland High School, but she believes that this will be come a tradition and will continue to grow in size and scope.   Southern Guilford FFA Hannah Barnes - Chapter President of the Southern Guilford FFA Chapter in Greensboro, North Carolina For the past four years the Southern Guilford FFA Chapter has been conducting a toy drive, beginning in mid-November, to collect toys for children in their community that can be given to them as gifts on Christmas Day.  The effort is now split into a whole chapter drive and an additional drive involving the just the officer team.  The chapter is partnered with the U.S. Marine Corps through their Toys For Tots program, and all of the toys are handed over to them for distribution. In this interview Hannah highlights one of her fellow chapter members that, in spite of the $5 spending limit, donated over $250 worth of toys to the event.  The generosity of this student and the entire chapter is very heart warming.   Raft River FFA Jessi Knudsen - Vice President of the Raft River FFA Chapter in Malta, Idaho What began with a canned food drive has now grown into a full blown gift giving extravaganza for the community in and around Malta, Idaho.  As the Raft River FFA Chapter has continued to give to their community during Christmas anonymous donors from the community have joined in, giving money to the cause so that more can be bought and the joy of the season can be spread to even more people.   Sleepy Eye FFA Adam Johnson - Chapter President of the Sleepy Eye FFA Chapter in Sleepy Eye, Minnesota The Sleepy Eye FFA Chapter participates in a backpack food program, and this year for Christmas they are putting together "Holiday Boxes" for folks needing some help in their community.  They are making "tie blankets" as a chapter and giving those away in addition some food, an ornament and personal care items.   Lumberton FFA Kamryn McInnis - Chapter President of the Lumberton FFA Chapter in Lumberton, North Carolina "Share The Warmth" Project - the chapter used the proceeds from their poinsettia sale to purchase coats for kids identified by social services in their county.  52 coats were purchased and donated to children in the area.     Ripley FFA Riley Knotts - Chapter Vice-President Of The Ripley FFA Chapter in Ripley, West Virginia Riley and his fellow chapters members are supporting the "Jackson County Hunting Heroes" program by butchering deer for the veterans who have gone out on the hunts and filled their tags.  The Ripley FFA Chapter has been participating in this program for quite some time, and their involvement continues to develop.  In this interview Riley talks about the veterans and holds in the high regard that they deserve.

In this episode, Deborah talks about the mental space she was in after having 5 kids under the age of 6. She shares how she struggled with postpartum depression and during this time, how things got really dark and she even contemplated living. Deborah was constantly filled with anger and rage. She talks about how scary it was to reach out for help for the fear of losing her children. To add to that fear, the help that was offered was not an approach that she wanted to try. She talks about how her experience living through and treating her mental illness motivated her to go to school at 37. She shares her vision of what community service looks like and how she is working to create a compassionate approach within her own endeavours.Deborah Gregson is the Executive Director and Founder of HeARTh Social Profit Company and the founder and CEO of DMG Do More Good Social Benefit Housing and Community Development Corporation. She is a wife, mother and grandmother. She is an artist, singer songwriter, renovator, mover and shaker, and a systems-oriented servant leader. Much of her art and music and her passion for community development comes from her healing journey from mental illness and the truths and insights she earned along the way. Deborah Gregson decided to get a counselling degree after battling with mental illness and through her own recovery she realized how difficult it is for human beings to move past illness when the systems they live and work in are not equipped to help them move into wellness. So, she changed her focus from one on one counseling to community development and systems transformation. She has worked in the field of community mental health and supports for a few years, trying to help build that community of care she knows is needed, and believes is possible.Find out more about Do More GoodDeborah's MusicFollow Candace on Instagram

On today's episode, we get to know CrossFit Athlete, Entrepreneur, and former Bachelorette contestant, Luke Parker, on a whole new level. We get pretty real in this interview as we sat down at the 2019 CrossFit Games, just months after his season on the Bachelorette aired. It was pretty controversial season as Luke stood up for his faith and what it means to live it out. As you can imagine, doing so on such a public platform invited both praise and criticism.    Regardless of where people stand on how he conducted himself on the show, one thing is true, Luke P. is not where his identity starts or stops. We get into the growth that has happened since the show, and his hopes for the future. One thing we can all take away from this episode is that our past is not our future. It is something we can grow and learn from, but it does not have to define us, regardless of what anyone says or thinks. The most important opinion that matters is God's, and he can use all situations and stories for his glory.    If you want to check out what Luke has been up to since the interview, you can find him on Instagram, @luke_parker777, or at The Unbroken Mentality (@unbrokenmentality), the new podcast he launched on developing the champion mindset. SMART BUILDINGS; SMART INVESTMENTS If you’ve been listening to the news in the US, you’ve heard about the Green New Deal, a multi-trillion-dollar plan to redo the energy infrastructure of the US. Part of that plan calls for upgrading every business building in the US to be more energy efficient. In this episode of IoT Playbook, I interview Taylor Clark, who explains how he is already saving building owners an average of 40% of their energy costs using Smart Building technologies and smart MSP IT strategies. Taylor Clark is the founder of Alternegy, an enterprise-level IoT managed service company that architects and manages enterprise-class IoT projects for cities, building owners, enterprise customers, agribusiness, and more. In this episode, Taylor reveals the two key drivers for smart building success and how you can jump into the Smart Building opportunity, one of the fastest-growing MSP IT opportunities in IoT managed services today. Taylor reveals his clever method for winning business away from the biggest players in the industry – stealing business from companies 100x his size. So, just head on over to podcast.iotplaybook.com and search for Episode 9, where I’ll show you the actual Playbooks that IoT managed service providers are using to make 7-figures or more of recurring revenue right now. What You Will Learn: The challenges and processes associated with selling smart building MSP IT solutions How to prospect large commercial buildings and who is involved How Taylor is using AI in agribusiness and cannabusiness How to identify the types of buildings that are ideal opportunities Why event recognition is gaining traction in the smart building space The importance of partnerships for pricing and packaging Why IT people have a major advantage in smart building solutions https://podcast.iotplaybook.com/podcasts/msp-it-taylor-clark-1-part-2/ Smart Buildings & Smart MSP IT When it comes to smart buildings and MSP IT solutions, lighting is still Taylor Clark’s bread and butter. However, he also offers an AI IoT platform that uses cameras for face and event recognition. Taylor brings a different solution to the table based on individual clients’ needs. But with smart buildings, prospecting can be a grueling process. Typically, you have to drag your value proposition up the ladder, starting with the building’s facilities manager, then the property manager, and eventually, the portfolio manager. Difficult it may be, a large majority of commercial buildings across the globe have not been retrofitted with a modern MSP IT solution and energy-efficient equipment. So, the reward heavily outweighs the cost of sale. There is a lot of money to be made in this space. Lighting and Event Recognition LED lighting should remain at the forefront when you are selling a smart building MSP IT solution because it is the most obvious opportunity. Once you establish a power reduction plan, you can begin to look at control systems and the technological infrastructure managing the building. This is where you embed your solution for recurring revenue. Then you can explore other opportunities such as AI. Event recognition is the first step in automatically figuring out what your MSP IT solution needs to do on a large scale. This combination has been extremely lucrative in schools, agribusiness, and cannabusiness, but there are opportunities everywhere. Partner Up Taylor Clark is not a bank, nor is he a lighting manufacturer; he is the architect of his MSP IT solution. He found a great banking partner, insurer, and equipment provider to help him navigate the complex deals in this space. Taylor also recommends finding a partner who can help you tap into the ROI of your IoT platform. Your prospects are only willing to pay for efficiencies and gains and you need to make them measurable. The person who understands the clients’ needs and how to design an MSP IT solution that meets them will see great returns. If you are coming from an IT background, you have a significant advantage there. About Taylor Clark Taylor Clark’s career spans over 25 years in Sales, Finance, and Technology. Starting as Assistant Direct of Revenue at White Water responsible for overseeing all revenue-generating verticals within the company. We talk about being raised a Nashville Native by a Reverend daddy and Tai Chi Yogi mama in the buckle of the bible belt and how service in prisons and Civil Rights activism were born into her bones. It was a moving conversation that had me look at my own languaging with respect to this section of community, the judgments that have been held deep inside my conditioning and the compassion that deepened throughout this conversation as I began to see deeply entrenched beliefs float to the surface. This conversation will shed light on your own conditioning and programing around this sector of society and I pray that it humbles and opens your mind, creating space for a more unitive way of viewing society. We pay homage to her teachers Jai Uttal and Sally Kempton among others, while discussing insiders she’s spent time with such as Tony Vick who wrote the book Secrets from a Prison Cell, the innocent Cyrus Wilson who has served nearly 27 years incarcerated-so far-and is awaiting psyche evaluation to see if he will be released on parole this year. Don Johnson, is scheduled to be executed on May 16th 2019, and still praying for clemency from TN Governor Bill Lee. Rahim Buford, a released insider who now works with the Children’s Defense Fund Nashville Organizing Team, having spent 26 years in prison, has founded the non profit Unheard Voices. We also talked about different non-profits such as Jeannie Alexander’s, 'No Exceptions' She also mentions several times, for those who want to gain greater awareness of prison life realities, to watch the documentary Amendment 13 on Netflix. Hi Friends, With MLK day just around the corner, Erika and I thought it would be fitting to chat about service project ideas that you can do to make an impact.  Whether you want to support on the local level or global level, your gifts can be used to help others! Maybe you don't have a cause that you are passionate about, and that's ok. This episode is designed to help narrow down the countless options out there. Click below to listen to our conversation: If you know someone who would enjoy this episode, will you please share it with a friend?! If you are not sure where to start, we suggest asking yourself the following questions: 1.) Who would you like to help? Is there a specific group of people or cause you are passionate about? Look for projects that relate to your passion and interests. You may also just want to perform particular community service activities that allow you to do hobbies you enjoy, like cooking or sports, and that's fine too. Tip: Start by thinking about categories like children or the environment, if you don’t have a specific organization in mind, searching by category is a good starting place for choosing specific organizations to contact. 2.) Do you want a community service activity that is reoccurring or a one-time event? Perhaps you don't have enough time to regularly devote to community service. In that case, it may be better to look for opportunities that only occur once or sporadically, such as planning special events or helping build a house. Tip: Figure out how much time you can devote to community service. Are you available for two hours every week? Are you not free on a regular basis but can volunteer for an entire weekend now and then? Think about transportation as well and how you'll be able to get to different locations. Knowing this information will help you choose which community service projects to pursue, and its helpful information for volunteer coordinators to know. 3.) What kind of impact do you want to have? Some people prefer to participate in community service activities that have a quantifiable impact, for example, activities where you know the specific number of kids you tutored, dollars you raised, or cans of food you collected. Some people prefer quantifiable activities because they simply enjoy knowing their exact impact on the community. Tip: Do some research to see what projects you can do in your community:Check at your school, place of worship, or town hall for more information on volunteering. You can also contact the place where you’d like to perform your community service, such as a particular animal shelter or nursing home, and ask if they take volunteers. 4.) What skills would you like to gain? Many community service activities can help you gain skills. These skills can range from teaching to medicine to construction and more. If there is a particular skill you'd like to learn for future classes, jobs, or just out of personal interest, you may want to see if there is a community service activity that helps you learn that skill. Tip: Try it! Service projects range from small projects that you can complete on your own in a few hours, to much larger projects that will take more time and people.
