In this episode I'm talking to Dr James Mannion. James is co-author of Fear is the Mind Killer a book designed to guide, implement and evaluate a Learning Skills curriculum in schools. More recently he has written Making Change Stick, a book that brilliantly synthesises research on school improvement so that is can be practically implemented in a sustainable way. James is also a fellow podcaster, hosting the Rethinking Education podcast and is director at Rethinking Education. I was really happy to be able to speak with James after following his work on Learning to Learn for a long time and wanting to know his interpretation of the International Baccalaureate's approach to this. Additionally, his more recent writing on implementation science is incredibly useful in providing pragmatic approaches for new and existing leaders of change. We discuss: What the distinction is between cognition, metacognition, self-regulation and self-regulated learningWhat James makes of the IB's Approaches to Learning framework How his Learning to Learn programme was sequenced Whether Learning to Learn should be tailored to respective subjects or taught through a bespoke class How much of the Making Change Stick programme would be relevant to middle leaders And finally, whilst compiling a fantastic collection of implementation strategies, who are James' 3 or 4 pillars of the field in terms of researchers or texts that proved seminalThanks again to James for doing the hard yards in condensing a decade's work of research down into an eminently readable books on two separate occasions. Send us a textDo you need to get your teachers official IB training that doesn't break the bank? Did you know that schools can request specific subjects and categories of training that come straight to you? In this episode, Casey Strecker of Minneapolis Public Schools (MPS) and I go over the advantages of in-school workshops. We talk about how to order them, the responsibilities of the host school, and how to use them to get your staff the training that fits your school's needs. Note: The 'blended' model we talk about in the podcast is currently available only in the America's region but all regions support school-requested workshops in multiple formats. These are not just for individual schools. IB Schools Associations, neighboring schools, and whole school districts are using this option to create economical learning opportunities that fit their budgets and schedules. The International Baccalaureate is an internationally recognized Swiss educational program since 1968, that was conceived to prepare students for tertiary education in a bilingual setting. The Deutsche Schule Melbourne is planning on offering this program to their students starting from next year. This would make it Australia's second secondary school to offer the IB Diploma in German and English. We met school director Jörg Dopfer for an interview.

If what our culture most urgently needs is for a critical mass of us to grow into adults and then elders, how can we help our young people to step beyond the artificial boundaries of our old, rigid system into a world where they are fully connected to all parts of themselves, each other and the web of life. How, in effect, can we create an educational system that is fit for purpose in the emerging century? In this podcast, I joined with Tim Logan, host of the Future Learning Design podcast, educator, part of the team at Good Impact Labs and co-leader of the International Baccalaureate's 'Festival of Hope'. Tim is a highly experienced school leader, management consultant, coach, educator and researcher, has held previous pedagogical and well-being senior leadership positions in a variety of international settings and is proud to have consistently helped to build innovative, outstanding schools, supportive relationships and powerful educational visions. He says, 'The important question for now is, can we intentionally create more spaces in our schools that provide a qualitatively different kind of 'educational' experience? Transformational shifts are happening in educational and organisational cultures around the world right now. I am incredibly fortunate to be able to play a role in this.'I was on the Future Learning Design podcast just before the dark nights of winter with Ginie Servant-Miklos, Raïsa Mirza and Will Richardson and his podcast has become one of my essential listens of the week and had been planning to invite Tim here to talk about the transformational shifts happening in education and how they can help us lay the foundations for a world we'd be proud to leave behind. We were planning something for later in the year but we had a cancellation and he had a tech misfire and we both needed something fast to get the schedules back on track, so here we are with a joint conversation—one of those that ranges wide over the landscape of culture and learning and the 'citadel mind' and our history of optimising for everything and how we could, instead, begin to expand into a more porous mindset and look for resonance and help young people to become part of the emerging transformation of the entire web of life. Jonathan Labman was born in Trenton, New Jersey in the United States in 1955. He grew up in Pennsylvania, in Trenton suburbs. At 16, he won a scholarship to an international high school called the United World College of the Atlantic, in South Wales, UK, where he completed an International Baccalaureate degree. Jonathan has been fundamentally interested in human well-being, spirituality and psychology since the age of 15. During and after completing university at Covenant College, Jonathan lived in a Christian fundamentalist commune for several months in Santa Barbara California (1974), and an evangelical Christian co-operative community that devolved into a cult from 1978-1984. Following these experiences, he studied acting, movement, dance and voice in New York. Disillusioned with egotism, he turned to working with people in a healing capacity: first as a Licensed Massage Therapist, then Energetic and Psychic Healing, followed by a graduate degree in Counseling Psychology, and training as a Yoga teacher (500 hour certification). Jonathan has worked as a professional counselor since 2000. Jonathan has enjoyed the transition into Non-Dual Awareness, being spiritually Awake since July of 2001. He now teaches clients how to work with psychological distress and move towards spiritual awakening. He currently has four published books: An Ordinary Being (memoir); Simply Awake: Spiritual Enlightenment, the Simplest Thing; Taming the Three-Ring Circus of Your Mind; and Being Human and Waking Up: a guide for psychotherapy clients and enlightenment students (September 2023). He sees clients in person and in small groups, in the Doylestown, Pennsylvania area. https://www.simplyawake.com for more information.

In this episode, I'm talking to Eoin MacCarthaigh. This is the first in what we hope will be a long line of episodes focused on issues in and around international English teaching. It's important at the outset to explain that this is an unapologetic rip off another podcast that I personally love, namely Craig Barton and Ollie Lovell's Tips and Tools for Teachers. For anyone who hasn't heard this show, first of all it is a fantastic listen for professionals of any discipline. Specifically, the regular format is that both speakers bring forth 3 unknown issues to be discussed each, relating to things that they've thought, learnt or considered lately. So, here is me and Eoin's effort at doing the same with an international English bent.We discuss- AI- Oracy- Inquiry- Gapless instruction- Infographics- And lastly, whether English sits outside the insights of cognitive researchIf you want to be kept up to date on when educational chat like this happens, then be sure to subscribe to the podcast and/or follow me on Twitter @chrisjordanhk and Eoin @EMCTeachLinks:Meanings and practices of inquiry-based teaching and learning in the International Baccalaureate (2022) Joseph L. Podcast InformationGraphic: Shownotes: THE MODERN CRONESeason 5: The Spirit of Love with PhD Student and Commentator on Gender and Sexuality Representation in Australian Film and Society, Issey KaneIssey Kane, is a PhD student at the University of Melbourne who is researching the intersection of public and cultural policy to explore the fifty year-long project that is curating Australia's national identity through film. Raised in Singapore from an early age, Issey embarked on her academic journey at the Australian International School before graduating from the International Baccalaureate program in 2016. She pursued her passion for the arts, earning a Bachelor of Arts with majors in Media and Communication and Film and Cultural Studies from the University of Melbourne. Continuing her scholarly pursuits, she obtained a Master of Arts and Cultural Management in 2022 and has just begun her PhD as of February 2024 after spending a semester teaching at the University in film and visual media classes. Beyond the surface of cinema, Issey's research delves deep into the nuances of representations and aesthetics within National Cinemas. Her focus lies in deciphering the cultural resonance embedded in films and understanding their impact on audiences. Of particular interest to her, as a lesbian, is the portrayal of gender and sexuality in these national films, and the industrial landscape that shapes their narratives through policy on funding, distribution, and exhibition. Through her work, Issey strives to uncover the intricate connections between film, culture, and identity, shedding light on the broader socio-political landscape of Australia through a contemporary and historical lens. Join us as we explore Issey's journey as a young lesbian in today's world and the subtle prejudices that still exist; the queer identity in public spaces; the importance of self-censorship when travelling; the continuous nature of 'coming out' in a hetero-normative standard of most societies; the impact of Pride and D&I movements for young gay lovers; the impact of institutional gender dynamics; what's the best way to navigate the queer gender labels; the importance of honest representation of self and listening…and so much more! All the talk about systems change in education is great, and a topic we cover lots on the podcast. But the current reality for many educators might feel very removed from such visions. And yet, when you get into the details of what really deep and energised inquiry looks like with curious and questioning young people in classrooms, the two worlds feel a lot closer. And there are few people that know the specifics of what great inquiry-based learning looks like in theory and practice better than Trevor Mackenzie, so it was fantastic to be able to sit down with him this week to chat about it. We talk about teacher dispositions, question routines, provocations, levels of structure, and also the way that an inquiry stance can show up in all cultures in different ways as humility and curiosity.
