Originally aired Feb 1 2022; In this week's episode, I am joined by Marcie Resendes, Registered Nurse and Author of, ‘If The Brain Could Stop What The Eyes have Seen.' Marcie shares her story of overcoming being diagnosed with PTSD, how she lives with it and manages it day to day. We also discuss methods of how we can protect ourselves against burnout, leading to mental illness, and overwhelm in the workforce.  About Marcie: “I am a 42-year-old wife, mother to three beautiful children ages 17, 15 and 6. I am a Registered Nurse and proud to say I have been for 21 1⁄2 years. The nursing school Diploma Program at St. Clair College was a struggle, but I had a strong heart and passion to be a nurse; a good kick in the butt from my dad when I was 19 pushed me through. During the summer of 1998, I volunteered at the Pelee Island Medical Clinic.I worked beside two wonderful nurses who allowed me to observe clinics, minor traumas, and what nursing in an isolated area is. I witnessed head injuries after drunken falls, fractures of bones, sprains and strains, as well as general labs and medical check ups. I loved the opportunity to gain this experience in nursing. It was totally different than at the hospital. I was able to observe how a team (EMS, Police, and Nursing) work together to get the job done. June 18, 1999 was the day my dreams came true: I graduated on the Principal's Honour Roll. Finally I could do what I had strived to do: take care of the sick and make them well. Growing up I had been raised to treat the janitor with the same respect as the CEO of the company. I was told that each team member in a company has a vital job to do each and every day to keep the company running. Little did I know that after 19 1⁄2 years of caring for the sick, wounded, critically injured, dying and mentally unstable would leave me with wounds unrecognizable to the human eye. I attended an appointment with my Nurse Practitioner on January 10, 2019, that's when my life changed. I thought I was having a simple return to work appointment after a bout of influenza the week before, but it turned out to be so much more. When Bonnie the Nurse Practitioner walked in and observed me, her first statement changed my whole life: “You Have PTSD”. Tamara Irving is a distinguished arts educator and performer with more than 20 years of professional experience and 12 years in the classroom. As a curriculum writer and consultant Tamara has experience in IB (International Baccalaureate) Middle Years Program, Diploma Program, and Career Program and was recently selected as an examiner for dance in the Diploma/Career-related program. Her success may be found in building arts programs, including fundraising, outreach, and engagement. Tamara's background in marketing, along with her experience as a professional dance artist has allowed her to bring a wealth of training, arts curricula design, artistic direction, and utilization of technology in teaching. Her educational journey started when she left the Us National Tour of The Lion King and needed to find stability while still utilizing her gift of dance. Due to limited support in many school districts for arts educators, Tamara was led to create a consulting firm that supported arts education programs. TMI Design and Consulting is committed to supporting Arts educators by developing arts curricula and facilitating teacher training and professional development programs infused with career and leadership skills practices with the goal of enhancing learning experiences. In addition to being a professional dancer, entrepreneur and educator, Tamara is also a proud wife and mom of 2 beautiful daughters and a son! Marcie shares her story of overcoming being diagnosed with PTSD, how she lives with it and manages it day to day. During the summer of 1998, I volunteered at the Pelee Island Medical Clinic. I worked beside two wonderful nurses who allowed me to observe clinics, minor traumas, and what nursing in an isolated area is. Tune in to this week's episode to learn: What signs she noticed when something was wrong & what actions she took How to incorporate self-care not only to your home life but to your work life What made her decide to write her book and the impact it's had on others How we can better the well-being of providers in healthcare An example of the ABC method: Activating, Belief system and Consequence  How to manage the Fight, Flight or Freeze scenario    Grab your drink of choice and join the conversation!   Resources Website: https://marcieresendesbook.ca/  Instagram: @marcieresendes   Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/marcie.resendes.1    Connect with Jennifer George: @bestobsessed_with_jenn | Instagram Jennifer George | Website @jenngeorge08) | Twitter Jennifer George | Facebook Click here to check out my book about connecting and communicating with patients to empower their experiences! Of course, at that early age, it is not exams and intense study. It is much more about play and finding out about themselves as they learn to get along and to explore the world using their natural curiosity. Nupur takes us on a tour of the many important aspects of the Early Years and its role in developing young minds during these formative times. In other words, they show teachers and coordinators how to significantly improve Diploma scores. They are both experienced IB teachers with a long track record of doing just that and Asheesh worked for the IB Organization as the former directer of their Access, Equity and Excellence project. Tim was a consultant on that project. For both Asheesh and Tim this is an Equity issue. In their research, under represented students often don’t choose Diploma courses because they think they aren’t prepared, that they won’t succeed, or that the courses will leave them with no personal life. Asheesh and Tim have developed a set of strategies that improve success for all students in the DP courses. As a result they began an organization called IB School Improvement.com so they can share their expertise with others. This week on In the Drink, Head Sommelier of DANIEL, Raj Vaidya, comes into the studio to speak with us about developing his early passion for fine cuisine, food, and of course, amazing wines. Growing up in Bombay, he began learning about wine well before he would have been legally permitted to drink in this country. He refined his knowledge at what he calls his first serious restaurant job, working at New Jersey’s Ryeland Inn, with a chef who had a natural affinity for pairing food and wine. That early experience evolved into a particular love of Burgundy and the Rhône Valley, making him right at home working with Daniel Boulud, a Rhône valley native with a love of that region’s wines. Raj Vaidya joined DANIEL in the Spring of 2009 with an impressive history of experience in fine dining restaurants that boast some of this country’s most celebrated wine lists and wine service. His stellar resume includes positions at restaurants such as New York City’s Cru and Per Se, as well as Gary Danko in San Francisco and Seeger’s in Atlanta. Raj also spent time in California working with Robert Sinskey Vineyards, a biodynamic estate in Napa. In addition, Raj has earned some of the wine world’s most respected diplomas, including the Certificate Course of The Sommelier Society of America (2004), the Wine and Spirits Education Trust’s Advanced Certificate (2004) and their Diploma Program (2008). Tune-in today to hear more about the inner workings of restaurant Daniel, and how being head sommelier requires Raj to work as a both a trader and salesperson when searching for the perfect bottle. This program has been sponsored by the International Culinary Center. “I work two jobs. During the day I am a trader, and at night, I’m a salesperson.” [22:50] “In a wine pairing, you’re getting a snapshot, but it’s such a short window, that you have to be exact.” [31:50] — Raj Vaidya on In the Drink
