Michael Brown joined the Army right out of high school because he knew he wasn't ready for college. After serving 4 years as an infantryman, Michael separated and used his GI Bill to attend Northern Michigan University. Earning a degree in political science and applied ethics, he went on to work for then Congressman-elect, Patrick Murphy, the first Iraq War Veteran ever elected to Congress. Michael served as his Military and Veterans Affairs Director where he supported projects such as the revision and updates of the Post 9/11 GI Bill. He then went on to serve as the Director of Veterans Services for Montgomery County Community College before accepting a role at Villanova University as the first Director of the Office of Veterans and Military Service Members. Since 2018, Michael has been growing the programs, opportunities and community at the university for students and alumni.Choosing to attend college in person, Michael was often the oldest student in his classes. However, he did not allow that to deter him from continuing his degree program. He appreciated learning different perspectives from other students and professors. College helped Michael learn what he liked, didn't like and how he fit into the world. It provided him with a longer landing strip to transition. The Post 9/11 GI Bill offers a maximum benefit of 36 months of education and housing allowance. Michael encourages service members to start taking college courses while they are serving. Not only can they utilize Tuition Assistance without tapping into their GI Bill, but they will also earn credits toward a degree and lessen the amount of benefit they need from their GI Bill once they separate or retire from the military. In Michael's current role, he collaborates with career services and learning support services as well as working with the alumni network and college fundraising arm to ensure student veterans have the resources they need to be successful. Student veterans attend college because they need to upskill or reskill for a meaningful career after military service. By giving student veterans the opportunity to provide feedback about college services, Michael is able to find out what they want and need to be successful in the classroom and in the workforce. Michael focuses on finding quality internship opportunities and creates networking opportunities to help student veterans build a solid network. Over the years, Mike has identified challenges that many student veterans face. First, many college campuses are more aligned with meeting the needs of the traditional 18–22-year-old student. In addition, it can be challenging for a veteran to develop an academic mindset. If you are a current student veteran or a prospective student, reach out to the college and inquire if a veteran office exists on campus. A college education can teach a person about who they are and how they fit into society. Earning a degree involves learning and mastering new skills which should give the student confidence. Interacting with other students and professors will help the student build their professional network. Subscribe to our YouTube channel at https://tinyurl.com/llforvets22.Connect with Michael at https://www.linkedin.com/in/michael-brown-vu/SUBSCRIBE & LEAVE A FIVE-STAR REVIEW and share this with other veterans who might need help as they transition from the military!

Katie Michaelson is a Clinical EFT Practitioner, has a MA in Special Education, 15 years teaching experience, and is an in-home support to personal friends and their children with deployed Military Service Members. Katie's journey with EFT began as a tool she used personally to help reduce the stress and anxiety of daily life. As she continued to benefit from EFT and learn more, she knew she wanted to be a part of the larger EFT community and share this tool to help and support others on their personal healing journeys as well. While working with adults and children, she has seen stress and anxiety levels lowered, physical pain symptoms decrease and received client feedback towards making progress in overcoming their fears. In addition to this, many have shared an increased sense of peace and wellbeing. Today on the Transition, I'm joined by fellow Marine and Bunker Labs Ambassador Brand Childers, Founder of Freelance Corporal, an App whose aim is to help military service improve their financial literacy, combing a budget calculator with their EAS countdown, projecting how much savings a service member could get out of the military with. After serving in the Marines, Brand began pursuing his education in Psychology, with an emphasis on the veteran community. After recognizing that financial distress was a leading indicator for homeless and mental health issues, Brand decided to focus his attention on financial literacy. Despite not having a strong technical background, Brandon began engaging the veteran entrepreneurial ecosystem, joining organizations like Bunker Labs, and attending the MilVet Startup Conference, to figure out the best way to bring his app to market. On the show not only do we discuss Brandon's startup Journey, including launching his MVP, we discuss the importance of creating a more inclusive ecosystem to attract more enlisted service men and women, who often feel left out. Be sure to subscribe to the Transition Newsletter on Substack here: https://bit.ly/37Bb8NeOrder my book, “Black Veteran Entrepreneur” here: https://amzn.to/3gme7kgPurchase Chris's book here: https://amzn.to/3nx2NVWLearning more about Freelance Corporal here: https://www.freelancecorporal.com/

Saving lives: Bridging the Knowledge Gap for Military Service Members and Families to Avoid Loss of Life, and the Loss of HOPE! Brian Arrington, USAF (ret), M.S. is President/Founder of VETS2INDUSTRY LLC and Vets2Industry Foundation Inc. and is Director, Military Programs and Recruiting for Military Hiring Accelerator, LLC.  Brian retired July 2019, from the United States Air Force with Robins AFB, GA as his final duty station. His distinguished career led him to deploy to Iraq, Afghanistan, Thailand, and Qatar and provide humanitarian relief throughout SE Asia during the tsunami, Haiti during the earthquake, and in Turkey supporting refugee  evacuations during the Israel-Lebanon Mideast Crisis. Brian's career has taken him to 90 countries and 5 of the 7 continents.  In his last year of 20-years devoted service to the U.S. Air Force, Brian learned there were over 45,000 Veteran Service Organizations nationwide that provided free services and support to U.S. military families and realized a huge gap existed between available free Veteran, Military Spouse, and dependent children resources and benefits and the knowledge of their existence among our nations heroes and their families.  With this newly discovered knowledge, Brian vowed to eliminate the knowledge gap and ensure the success of every veteran and their families by creating an online library, a free single-site repository of every free Veteran Service Organization to include providing mentorship and information services to each knowledge-seeker.  Since the library's creation, March 2019, Brian has led VETS2INDUSTRY's growth by reaching 100,000+ veterans and military spouses with over 300,000 page-views on the website and he continues to supply employment opportunity success with the ever-growing grassroots volunteer force of veterans and military spouses he leads.  Brian is married with 6 children, resides in Atlanta, is an active alumnus of Centurion Military Alliance, Hiring our Heroes Corporate Fellowship Program, FourBlock, American Corporate Partners, volunteers with VETLANTA, the National Black MBA Association Atlanta Chapter, and is a student veteran leader and student ambassador at Syracuse University where he is currently pursuing his MBA and an M.S. in Entrepreneurship.  He holds 2 A.A.S. from the Community College of the Air Force, a B.A. in History, a Graduate Certificate in Homeland Security, and a M.S. in Management from Thomas Edison State University, and is a certified Georgia State Hostage Negotiator.  Learn more about your ad choices. The ALL ME® Podcast Operation Supplement Safety - Dr. Patty Duester and Andrea Lindsey Dietary Supplements are products we have likely all encountered at some point in our lives. It is an industry with over 50,000 different types of products and one that has surpassed over $40 billion dollars in revenue. It is also an industry with some regulation issues and therefore brings about some inherent health risks to using these products. Knowing that risk exists, it is important to make informed decisions when purchasing and taking any dietary supplements. In this episode, we will talk Dr. Patty Duester and Andrea Lindsey from Operation Supplement Safety (OSS), a group that is helping others make those informed decisions.   While OSS has resources available for all, their specific focus is on dietary supplement use within the Department of Defense. In January 2012, the Assistant Secretary for Health Affairs requested a DoD-wide educational campaign on dietary supplements. In response to this request, the DoD Dietary Supplement Subcommittee (DSSC), the U.S. Army Public Health Command, and the Consortium for Health and Military Performance (CHAMP) at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USU) began developing a DoD-wide educational campaign—Operation Supplement Safety, or OPSS—to increase awareness within the DoD community about potential health risks and how to choose safe dietary supplements. OPSS's mission is to provide the best evidence-based information about dietary supplements to Military Service Members, their families, healthcare providers, and leaders to achieve human performance optimization. Since many Military Service Members use dietary supplements-for promoting health, improving performance, bodybuilding, losing weight, and more-their goal is to provide the tools and resources to help users make informed decisions about dietary supplements to reduce the potential risks to their health and careers. Proprietary Blend: A "proprietary blend" is a combination of ingredients used only by one supplement manufacturer. In Episode 3, we discusses consumer protection as it relates to housing for our military service members and emotional support animals in housing with Amber Lee, Lending Compliance Program Manager at NCRC. The conversation covers what rights service members have and the discrimination facing this population everyday.Episode Highlights:Amber: Veterans face a lot of additional issues. They may be looking for housing as a disabled person but also it is the first time in our country that veterans are facing an issue of being under housed. They are struggling to find affordable housing. Amber: The CFPB did a survey of service members and they found that generally service members have higher levels of financial well-being. They also found that ⅓ of the service members that they surveyed didn't have more than one month of emergency savings. 23% had no emergency savings at all and nearly 35% of service members are what we call cost burdened. Which means that they are spending more than 30% of their income on housing and fewer than half of them own their own homes.Amber: Veterans today are a lot younger, younger people are tending to rent more than they are buying in general. Veterans and service members today are currently the more diverse in history as far as racial and ethnic makeup. A lot of that might mean that they are being shut out of the housing market because of inter-generational poverty, segregated neighborhoods, the things that everyone faces. Amber: Source of income is different. Some states put it on as you can't discriminate against someone because they are on public assistance. If they can cover the rent, they can cover the rent. It doesn't matter where their income is coming from. Amber: The Military Lending Act doesn't directly relate to housing in that it covers other types of credit. It caps the interest rate at 36%. Whereas civilians can go to payday lenders and often times those loans will be upward to 400%. If you are a service member and you are covered by the Military Lending Act, no one can give you a loan for higher than 36% interest rate. Amber: Service members who fall into cycles of debt, often it causes them to lose their security clearance. Thousands of veterans get booted out of the military service every year because of financial distress.Amber: The Military Lending Act was passed in 2006 after the DOD did a study finding that these predatory lenders were running to the bases to find young, financially distressed kids and suck them into these loans. The CFPB is responsible for enforcing the Military Lending Act. Ideally, they are the ones that should be going out searching for people who are violating these. Amber: The Federal Trade Commission is doing some stuff. They finalized a regulation that requires nationwide consumer reporting agencies to provide free electronic monitoring for service members. It is the Free Electronic Credit Monitoring for Active Duty Military rule. The official rule will go out later this month. It is attached to the Fair Credit Reporting Act. They've also gone after some companies who were trying to allege credit repair schemes. Amber: The Service Member Civil Relief Act protects existing debt while you are on active duty, period. It doesn't matter when it originated. It helps protect service members against foreclosures, termination of their lease, evictions due to failure to pay their monthly rent. It protects against wage garnishment if they can't pay their loans. It also prevents you from having to pay more than 6% interest on your credit obligations that incurred prior to you commencing your military duty service. Amber: File a complaint with the CFPB. They do make it very easy to file a complaint on their website. Rose: You can always contact NCRC we're more than happy to put you in contact with one of our member organizations that does Military Lending Act work and provides resources specific to service members.
