Here at the I Heart My Life Community, we are biiiig on desire (as you might have noticed from all the episodes we've had about the subject). And for a good reason! Being able to get everything you desire in life is a skill, and I want aaaaall of us to be able to learn and master that skill. You see, manifesting your desires doesn't have to be difficult (or impossible, like a lot of naysayers would tell you). It can be done, as long as you follow the right steps and do the work needed. A great example of this is today's guest on the I Heart My Life podcast, the brilliant, beautiful Lina Kennedy. Lina (also known as the Sugar Queen) is a storyteller, an entrepreneur, an inventor, a teacher, a successful business owner, and an all in all super woman with decades of business experience. She is also the founder and president of Alexandria Professional, the global leader and authority in body sugaring hair removal systems. Today, Lina and I will be going all in and talking about manifesting your desires, how she built her super successful dream business, the importance of staying positive and consistent in life, and more. Are you ready? Because I am! All right, let's dive in. In This Episode: [00:00] Introduction [01:00] Lina shares her story and how she became the successful woman she is today [08:21] Marry a millionaire? No, I'll become one instead! [17:54] Lina shares how she learned to grow her business [20:41] Some business from the Sugar Queen herself [25:44] Lina shares the financial challenges she faced during her journey [35:34] Let's learn more about Lina's book Quotes: “When you say ‘I'm grateful for the joy, abundance, and love that finds me today. I'm open, I receive, I'm ready.' Those three things can change your life on a daily basis.” – Lina Kennedy “I'm all about moving on. That's probably one of the biggest gifts I was given to myself is just to move on. And so the opposite of that would be to remain stuck. I don't believe in that. At all. There is always a solution. It's whether or not you're brave enough, or fearless enough, because fear is what stops so many people from taking that first step forward or away.” – Lina Kennedy “I love life. Every day I wake up, I'm so grateful.” – Lina Kennedy “I wish I could take away the fear from people. You shouldn't fear trying something different, trying something for yourself against whatever people believe.” – Lina Kennedy “Women, please, if there's one thing you could do for yourself in this one lifetime, in this one journey we have here, it's to look to make yourself happy. Don't look for a man to make you happy.” – Lina Kennedy “The easiest thing you can do to grow a business is this: Communicate clearly. You want people to understand you? Say it straight.” – Lina Kennedy Links & Resources: Ready to Uplevel Your Life? On this episode of the Life Her podcast, I talk with beauty brand builder Lina Kennedy. She's the CEO of Alexandria Professional, a multi-million dollar body sugaring hair removal and skincare line, and she recently wrote a book called The Sugar Queen. If you have a background of family dysfunction, abuse, or poverty, this story is going to be especially uplifting to you. Lina's childhood was challenging in many ways, and our conversation starts with me asking her how she worked past these hinderances and became the generous and successful person she is today. Lina shares how she got involved in beauty and skincare, and what made her decide to start this business. She describes some of the early opportunities that came her way in the field, and how she maximized them to grow her skincare brand. She also shares some of the elements of her products and company values that set them apart from many other companies. She describes the process of creating the audio version of her new book, and why it was a good choice to take on the daunting task of narrating it herself. Then, we talk about the topic of fear versus fearlessness. What does fearlessness look like in everyday life, and why is it so rare in the world? Lina gives examples of times that it paid off to take risks, and of ways that her entrepreneur spirit pushed past limits and expectations. It's obvious that Lina puts her heart and soul into everything she does. She shares how her three kids are involved in the business, and how she plans to delegate more in this next year in order to be present in every aspect of her life. She also shares about her ongoing philanthropic involvement in the fight to end childhood abuse, and gives some wise words about healing and true forgiveness. Lina is on such a high level with regards to not letting others drag her down, and she has sharp discernment about people's character. She shares a beautiful redemption story about re-hiring someone who had previously done her company wrong, and how she could tell that person had just been lost, rather than truly evil. You'll be inspired this story and by our whole conversation, and I know it's going to help you see how you can take your life and entrepreneurship to new levels this year as well. Instead, she became a millionaire and today, she's the head of a successful global beauty brand, Alexandria Professional® with products sold in 30,000 salons worldwide. For Lina, becoming wealthy was about more than just money. She wanted to make a difference with her wealth and by reaching financial success, she gained a platform to be heard. Right now, lots of Americans are discussing the importance of supporting black-owned businesses. When we launched GigRoots back in April of this year— the whole idea was to shine a light on the many people of color operating businesses in cities across the country. Because—as we know—many of these stories often go untold. Then on May 25th, a man named George Floyd was murdered by police officers in Minneapolis. Immediately following the death of Georg Floyd, many Americans began protesting against police brutality. A couple of months later, protests are still going on. But it didn’t take long for many black folks to point out that protests—while symbolizing allyship—are ultimately short-lived sentiments that won’t create lasting change. Black people started asking their white allies to dig deeper to find the root causes of injustice, economic disparity being among them. When I sit down each week to compile The Sound Podcast’s Weekly Mix-Tape playlist, the goal is always to find artists and songs that fit the general philosophy of music that we love. Meaningful, inspirational tunes, that are genuine in their creation, and authentic in their sound. Obviously the playlist is compiled from songs and artists that we already know and love, but sometimes, I come across a new artist that is new to me, that may in fact may not be new to anyone else. Such apparently was the case when we added Sugar Queen by The Band of Heathens last week. I didn’t realize at the time, that the band had quite a large following and through there 13 years of writing and performing music they had honed their craft into quite a career. So I was elated to sit down with Ed Jurdi to talk about his band, The Band of Heathens, to learn more about them, their inspiration, and a whole lot more. For more visit bandofheathens.com, and do check them out when they visit your town, or on your favorite music streaming platform. Amanda and Jenn discuss Southern fiction, Spanglish, portal fantasy, and more in this week's episode of Get Booked. This episode is sponsored by The Big Lie by Julie Mayhew and Book Riot Insiders. Bookstore Giveaway: bookriot.com/bookstoregiveaway Questions 1. I love love love novels written in Spanglish, both because I'm working on my Spanish, but also because I, too, live in a different community in which most people with whom I interact are bilingual and books like Junot Diaz's are exactly how we talk, albeit in a different language. My favorite genre is literary fiction, but I would take recommendations for good mysteries, YA, essay/poetry collections, or, if they're very well-written, fantasy or sci-fi. Bonus points for evoking a strong sense of place that immediately makes me want to book a trip wherever the book is set. Note: I'm not good with animal death, so either steer clear of that or at least include a trigger warning. Thanks! --Sarah 2. Hello Book Riot! I work at a college, and like a lot of colleges, each year our school assigns a summer reading book for the first-year students. I am just curious what books you two would recommend. What book, fiction or nonfiction, would you want every new college student to read? Thanks! Love the podcast. --Mel 3. Hello Amanda and Jenn! I love your show and all of your recommendations. I have one that I don't think you've covered yet. Growing up, I've always loved Alice & all the other wonderful characters in Wonderland and now, more recently, Neil Gaiman's Coraline and her freaky little alternate reality. I feel similarly about Peter Pan and Neverland, though I didn't read those books (only watched the movies. Oops!) I think they all appeal to this childhood desire to find a secret room or portal (my most common nighttime dream) that is fun, exciting, colorful, magical, and adventurous. If I'm real, it also appeals to my desire to escape the stress and terror of the world. Do you have any recommendations for similar books? Thank you!! P.S. I have read Harry Potter, the Secret Garden, etc. and while I enjoyed these books, I'm looking for something a little different than these. I've thought about reading the Narnia series, but still don't think it's quite what I want. I think I'd prefer something with one main character, even if there is a strong supportive cast, and also something that is a quicker read. --Kristin 4. Hi Jenn and Amanda, I love the podcast and look forward to it every week. I feel like the last few books I've read have been stories to "get through." I enjoy them, but don't find myself savoring words for words alone. I also find that I haven't read much romance lately. Could you recommend something where the language is as decadent as chocolate and there might be some will they/won't they romantic speculation? Favorite books include The Sugar Queen, Jane Eyre, The Blue Sword, and A Tale for the Time-Being. Thank you! --Devin 5. I recently read and loved both Hatching Twitter by Nick Bilton and Startup by Doree Shafrir, and this latest Uber scandal has got me interested in more behind-the-scenes tech company/startup books. I read Dave Eggers' The Circle when it first came out and thought it was just kind of okay (though it feels sacrilegious to me to criticize Dave Eggers) - I need some strong characters to really hook me into a story, though it doesn't matter if they're likable or not. I'm much less interested in the technology-is-world-changing angle than I am in the company culture angle. Fiction or nonfiction doesn't matter to me - I'm just looking for a juicy story. Thanks in advance! --Amy 6. I recently plowed my way through War and Peace and I loved it! However, I've realized that I know nothing about the Napoleonic Wars or Russian history. I prefer historical fiction but I wouldn't say no to some readable nonfiction either. Thanks! --Rachael 7. I absolutely love Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd. I recently read Whistling Past the Graveyard which had a similar storyline. Can you recommend any other books similar with a child/preteen narrator, set in the south with difficult family life? Thanks in advance.
