TERMINUS: extreme metal podcast

Play Episode Listen Later May 12, 2021 205:24

In this shimmering and vast episode of Terminus, your intrepid hosts venture into a block of advanced, high-concept black metal laced with elements of Orthodox, post-black, post-punk, electronic, ambient, neofolk, and just about anything else you can think of- after some oldschool death metal, if you're into that sort of thing. Long-running Indonesian battalion Devoured opens the festivities with The Curse of Sabda Palon, their first record in 9 years. Originally starting as a pummeling brutal death project, the band has since shifted gears into a unit which combines the dramatic, fluid melody of Dismember with delicate underpinnings of Southeast Asian folk music. We take some time investigating the role of vocals and drums in this style, as well as linking it to recent oldschool revival weirdos like Incertus- highly recommended for those who want something more from "retro-death." It's all uphill and downhill and sideways and inside out from here as we begin our block of abstract black metal with Inferno, underrated stalwarts of the Czech scene returning with a record sure to make waves in the Orthodox scene. Inferno combines high-level black metal guitar technique with a dizzying array of textures and instrumental voices to create something expansive and alien yet oddly mystical and comforting. Black metal psytrance? A natural progression of Aosoth? We cover these possibilities and more. After a brief return to forgotten pre-post-metal with Minsk, we're back in the fray with Fyrnask, a German project which laces a core of vicious and abstract black metal with slabs of dark ambient, neofolk, and post-industrial music, all of which contribute to a lonely, hermetic whole. Your hosts go back and forth on the relation of parts to the whole- Fyrnask is a band who are capable of doing excellent, straight-up ripping black metal, but would that be worth sacrificing the breadth of their arrangements? You be the judge. Finally, we conclude with something a little more traditionally Terminus with Secret Fire, a Canadian project which creates black metal more immediate and traditional than the previous two artists, but no less winding and abstract. TDMG and TBMG immediately become broiled in debate- is this Graveland? Winterfylleth? House of First Light? Something we've never heard of?- but ultimately conclude, unsurprisingly, that it's great music, no matter the results of the Rorschach test.   00:00 - Introductory bullshitting / Terminus News ft. We have to bleep a lot of names and we get real smart about this musical theatre phenomenon that brought us together as friends and lovers. * About Pia Pia Marchetti is a drawer of drawings and a thinker of thunks. They work at Studio Cult, where they make content and snuggle the cats. Pia is also an illustrator. (They illustrated this.) Pia went to fancy pants school for scenic design. Don't ask about it. They're passionate about emojis, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Britney Spears' music videography. They're really just trying to ride Clementine's coat tails to fame and fortune. So far so good! * About Clementine Clementine von Radics is a non-binary poet and mental health advocate living in Brooklyn. They've authored three poetry collections, In a Dream You Saw a Way to Survive, Mouthful of Forevers, and Dream Girl. Most importantly, they are friends with Pia Marchetti. Clementine got a masters degree from The Internet. Their brain is like a giant spherical cage with two cool skeletons riding motorcycles around in perpetuity. Clementine loves the aesthetics of maps, composition notebooks, and Dolly Parton. They know a lot (like too much tbh) about the racist history of Mt. Rushmore. If you meet them they will probably try to tell you about the racist history of Mt. Rushmore. #068 Three-Months Forevers from ‘The Orphans’ by James Barbarossa

How I Make Music

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 5, 2020 13:40

The piece of music featured in this episode is called Three-Months Forevers. It’s a slow and steady post-rock influenced piece which I wrote for the sci-fi audio drama The Orphans, which follows a group of survivors who crash land on an alien planet. The soundtrack aims to convey a yearning feel as the characters feel the loss of one of their own. This week we’ll look at some of the insights into why and how it was made. My name is James Barbarossa. I'm a composer from England, and this is How I Make Music. IN THIS EPISODE 01:37 The piece was influenced by the Dr Who theme. The bass and drums captured the emotion I was trying to convey. There’s a certain amount of ‘aping’ when it comes to imitating your influences. 03:42 I used a chimes patch as a leitmotif for the character Nora Evers. The chimes play whenever she is present, physically or otherwise. 05:01 In Batman Vs Superman, the Wonder Woman musical theme is a distorted electric cello. Strings are traditionally female instruments, especially in opera. But the power of this theme is the fact that it’s an electric cello. 05:55 I used Garage Band to compose this piece. Take a listen to the piece-by-piece breakdown of the rhythm section, the Nora Evers chimes, rising piano melody and the clean electric guitar leitmotif. 07:18 A major challenge in writing for audio drama is to avoid overwhelming the sound in the scene. Another challenge is knowing when it’s done! Art is never finished, only abandoned. 08:29 The electric piano, a jazzy instrument, is used to represent the unrefined nature of the human characters. The clean grand piano is colder, more cruel and represents the artificiality of the society in which they live. And some may be wondering if it’s all in vain. I’m hoping to provide you with a little encouragement to keep pushing and don’t succumb to the pressures of life. The question of sustainability in making purchasing decisions has grown more in popularity among consumers. There are many different options in this expanding market, but the classic option will always be shopping for used goods. This can also be the most cost effective because new sustainable brands tend to lean towards more expensive with the cost of making products using recycled material and to fairly compensate labor. Leziga Barikor talks with two of her friends about thrift shopping benefits and reasons to buy more items secondhand. In American culture, sleep and rest in general can be treated in very contradicting ways. On the one hand, expressing a sense of tiredness and a need for rest has become a cultural norm. While on the other, it has become a cynical type of status symbol to be so busy that having time for rest must mean someone isn't working hard enough. But between both of the cultural attitudes lies one similar problem -- sleep deprivation. This episode explores the basics on sleep in culture especially for those within the 18-24 year-old age range. Getting the best sleep is important for the best quality of life according to Shawna Haislet a Certified Health Education Specialist and Health Promotion Coordinator at the University of Northern Iowa. She discusses best practices for sleep, dispels common misconceptions and challenges the prevailing attitudes people have about sleep. Read more about her tips about sleep here: https://bit.ly/2vGYXeu We're Here Now is a podcast of the Here Now and Forevers blog.
