This week George Goncalves, MUFG Head of U.S. Macro Strategy, walks us through some of his latest special topics in the Macro2Markets Monthly Outlook report. As the title suggests, we first explore the risk-on mood on Wall Street and what is driving it. In George's view, he believes it is a bit premature that some market participants are reading the weaker data and the market-based interest rate declines as a good thing. George wraps up by providing his views on the current developments in bank lending and general credit conditions overall. He also takes us through the big moves that are happening on the U.S. government deficit front and their implications.

A New York Times and Siena College poll released Nov. 5 showed Donald Trump leading Joe Biden in five of the six key swing states, with a notable jump in support among nonwhite and young voters. In response, Democrats freaked out.But then two days later, voters across the country actually went to the polls, and Democrats and Democratic-associated policy did pretty well. In Kentucky, Andy Beshear held the governorship. Democrats took back the House of Delegates in Virginia. And Ohio voted for an amendment protecting abortion rights.I asked Mike Podhorzer, a longtime poll skeptic, to help to help me understand the apparent gap between the polls and the ballot box. Podhorzer was the longtime political director of the A.F.L.-C.I.O. And as the founder of the Analyst Institute, he was the godfather of the data-driven turn in Democratic campaign strategy. He also writes a newsletter on these topics called “Weekend Reading.”We discuss the underlying assumptions behind polling methodologies and what that says about their results; how to square Biden's unpopularity with the Democrats' recent wins; why he thinks an anti-MAGA majority is Biden's best bet to the White House and how that coalition doesn't always map cleanly onto demographic data; what a newly energized labor movement might means for Biden; and much more.Mentioned:“We Gave Four Good Pollsters the Same Raw Data. This week, we're excited to welcome Lex H. Jones to the show to celebrate his most recent release, the short story collection Whistling Past the Graveyard, which hit shelves earlier this year through Burdizzo Books. We're excited to have Lex on the show since he has written in a variety of different styles including horror, crime and even a children's book. That book, 2019's The Old One and The Sea, finds Lex taking Lovecraft's well-known mythology and crafting it into something totally unique. It's a captivating story about friendship and acceptance that's perfect for horror fans looking to share their love of the genre with their kids. I recently finished reading it to my daughter and every night she was excited to visit the world of Howard and Oolu. This was a great conversation where we covered everything from writing to cryptids and if you haven't checked out any of Lex's work, you're definitely missing out. Throughout the course of the episode, we talked about writing in different genres, the supernatural, Whistling Past the Graveyard, The Old One and the Sea, atmosphere in horror, and so much more! We had a great time recording this episode and hanging out with Lex. We hope you guys enjoy the conversation as much as we did!

Can a marriage and family counseling model help bridge political divisions, or are there deeper forces at work that require us to re-think American identity and the unmoored self of post-modernity? Our show pushes back against the unexamined, often unconscious ways that we frame public questions using political or economic modes of thinking. We aim to be part of a growing movement of people who are critical of the narrowness of political and economic categories, and who want to revive a vision of human flourishing that is grounded in the wisdoms of theological and moral philosophical tradition. We see these habits and ways of thinking as being pre-political, and foundational to a healthy and civil shared life in families, communities, economies, and polities. In short, we want to create a community that is grounded in curiosity, going deep, and shining light. Let us know your thoughts and reflections on our Facebook Page: @whatingods. Are we invested in our view of others to the degree that we will purchase our justifications? 05:45     How does Martin Buber’s notions of I/Thou, I/It help us understand the objectification of other people? Can we have pre-judgments about others and still treat them fairly? 11:30     Do we want this relationship to work? It’s the question of marriage and family therapy; how would we answer this with regard to those in our society who have a different view of the world than we do? Is civil discourse all we need, or are there deeper issues? 18:30     Is our political situation a product of the failure of the moral imagination?

My thoughts about the Covid 19 shutdown of the world. Didn't mention this in the recording, it's not the first time the world has ended. It's ending for people now, today, yesterday maybe tomorrow. It's just the beginning, we've created the ideal conditions for these outbreaks. If we survive this we won't survive the next. People are no loger taking things for granted. We are the planet that was obliterated with the Death Star. We are the people seeing it loom above, bigger than a moon. What will it take to rally us into action? A real threat. What about the one that is not immediately tangible, seeable. We bury our heads, our minds. We can't bury this and then we will begin again the cycle of waste, of injustices and social inequities with no concern for those in destitution, the limp bodies of infants, the millions of displaced. Isn't it time we gave the other life forms a chance before we fuck it up for everyone?

Please click through to the survey and tell us your thoughts about all things Currently Reading! You’ll hear a “bookish moment of the week” from each of us: a local author event and pre-reading a book for a friend. Next, we discuss our current reads for the week. We’re each sharing two reads this week since Belly Up episodes end up running long. Strong opinions abound in our novels this week! We’ll move on to a short Slow But Steady update from each of us, including a “completed!” update. For our deep dive this week, we are discussing the Currently Reading 2019 Challenge category 11: Books Pressed by an IRL or Online Book Club. We already shared a lot of Book Club thoughts in episode 4 of season 2, so this ends up being an ode to finding your bookish tribe. Finally, this week, we are Bellying Up to the Book Bar with DeeAnn Haworth. This was a bit of a challenge for one of us, but we’re excited to talk about some new to you and to us titles! As per usual, time-stamped show notes are below with references to every book and resource we mentioned in this episode. If you’d like to listen first and not spoil the surprise, don’t scroll down! *Please note that all book titles linked above are Amazon affiliate links. Something tells me it's certainly not going to be the last. The market was down from the bell this morning. Even before the bell, if you look at the futures, even before we got the jobs number - the February jobs report (which I will get into a little later in this podcast) the markets were already down.  The Dow Futures, I think were off about 125, 135, something like that. Normally, the markets are not making a big move in either direction before the jobs report comes out, because people don't know what the number is going to be, and generally it's a market-moving number, so the markets are typically pretty flat before we get the number. Trade Deal Up in the Air This time, the markets were down.  Based on rumors that the trade deal with China may be delayed.  People were talking about this Mar-a-Lago Summit that was going to take place later in the month, and now I was reading about how there may not be a deal in time, and the Chinese may not want to go to Mar-a-Lago, and so the whole thing is up in the air. So people were getting a little nervous about the trade deal. So that's why the markets were already selling off, plus, I think the Chinese markets had been weaker overnight. Trump or someone else Tweeted out that Trump had said, as soon as we signed the trade deal, the markets are really going to spike. Apparently, nobody has explained to Donald Trump how the stock market works. Buy the rumor sell the fact. This Sunday, April 15, was the first day of Rev. Laura Mayo's sabbatical. Covenant members performed a dramatic reading of Bill Martin's "Second Comings."  "The primary inspiration for this playlet was A. J. Langguth's Jesus Christs, a 1968 novel comprising a number of vignettes of the sort included in the performance. I do not have easy access to that book, but I have note cards from a considerably longer (and seriously dated) performance that I gave at Covenant in the 1970s in which I acknowledged a significant debt to the Langguth book, claiming approximate originality for only about 50 percent credit of the remainder. In the current version, I estimate that at least a third of the scenes are borrowed directly from that book, though condensed and tweaked, and that other lines may or may not be, or may come from poems, cartoons, or irreverent companions. As I noted in the introduction, I have mused on such scenes since childhood." Players included: Jim Avera, Jodi Bash, Ruddy Cravens, Bill Martin, and Shannon Stewart. Nancy Henry read the opening Call to Worship; the poem: "Heaven on Earth" by Kristin Berkey-Abbott from, Whistling Past the Graveyard. Pudding House Publications, 2004. Bill Martin read the scripture lesson. #TheseAreOurSacredStories

Amanda and Jenn discuss Southern fiction, Spanglish, portal fantasy, and more in this week's episode of Get Booked. This episode is sponsored by The Big Lie by Julie Mayhew and Book Riot Insiders. Bookstore Giveaway: bookriot.com/bookstoregiveaway   Questions 1. I love love love novels written in Spanglish, both because I'm working on my Spanish, but also because I, too, live in a different community in which most people with whom I interact are bilingual and books like Junot Diaz's are exactly how we talk, albeit in a different language. My favorite genre is literary fiction, but I would take recommendations for good mysteries, YA, essay/poetry collections, or, if they're very well-written, fantasy or sci-fi. Bonus points for evoking a strong sense of place that immediately makes me want to book a trip wherever the book is set. Note: I'm not good with animal death, so either steer clear of that or at least include a trigger warning. Thanks! --Sarah   2. Hello Book Riot! I work at a college, and like a lot of colleges, each year our school assigns a summer reading book for the first-year students. I am just curious what books you two would recommend. What book, fiction or nonfiction, would you want every new college student to read? Thanks! Love the podcast. --Mel   3. Hello Amanda and Jenn! I love your show and all of your recommendations. I have one that I don't think you've covered yet. Growing up, I've always loved Alice & all the other wonderful characters in Wonderland and now, more recently, Neil Gaiman's Coraline and her freaky little alternate reality. I feel similarly about Peter Pan and Neverland, though I didn't read those books (only watched the movies. Oops!) I think they all appeal to this childhood desire to find a secret room or portal (my most common nighttime dream) that is fun, exciting, colorful, magical, and adventurous. If I'm real, it also appeals to my desire to escape the stress and terror of the world. Do you have any recommendations for similar books? Thank you!! P.S. I have read Harry Potter, the Secret Garden, etc. and while I enjoyed these books, I'm looking for something a little different than these. I've thought about reading the Narnia series, but still don't think it's quite what I want. I think I'd prefer something with one main character, even if there is a strong supportive cast, and also something that is a quicker read. --Kristin   4. Hi Jenn and Amanda, I love the podcast and look forward to it every week. I feel like the last few books I've read have been stories to "get through." I enjoy them, but don't find myself savoring words for words alone. I also find that I haven't read much romance lately. Could you recommend something where the language is as decadent as chocolate and there might be some will they/won't they romantic speculation? Favorite books include The Sugar Queen, Jane Eyre, The Blue Sword, and A Tale for the Time-Being. Thank you! --Devin   5. I recently read and loved both Hatching Twitter by Nick Bilton and Startup by Doree Shafrir, and this latest Uber scandal has got me interested in more behind-the-scenes tech company/startup books. I read Dave Eggers' The Circle when it first came out and thought it was just kind of okay (though it feels sacrilegious to me to criticize Dave Eggers) - I need some strong characters to really hook me into a story, though it doesn't matter if they're likable or not. I'm much less interested in the technology-is-world-changing angle than I am in the company culture angle. Fiction or nonfiction doesn't matter to me - I'm just looking for a juicy story. Thanks in advance! --Amy   6. I recently plowed my way through War and Peace and I loved it! However, I've realized that I know nothing about the Napoleonic Wars or Russian history. I prefer historical fiction but I wouldn't say no to some readable nonfiction either. Thanks! --Rachael   7.  I absolutely love Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd. I recently read Whistling Past the Graveyard which had a similar storyline. Can you recommend any other books similar with a child/preteen narrator, set in the south with difficult family life? Thanks in advance.
