The latest Blues is the Truth is live and this week we're shifting gears. There are no awards or trophies this time around, just a deep dive into the kind of music that keeps the pulse of this scene beating. We've got a massive lineup that spans the full spectrum of the craft. You'll hear the raw energy of The Milkmen, The South Island Rhythm Kings, and The Paul Michael Band alongside the world class talent of Geoff Achison and harmonica ace Giles Robson. The vibe stays heavy and authentic with tracks from John Cee Stannard, Tom Waits For No Man, and the effortlessly cool Stray Cat Willy and the Strays. We're also honoring the storytellers and the technicians like Michael Messer, Half Deaf Clatch, and the Geoff Garbow Band. And because we always respect the lineage, we've brought the giants into the room. BB King, Freddie King, Mike Bloomfield, and Stevie Ray Vaughan are all here to remind us why we fell in love with this music in the first place. From the modern fire of Samantha Fish and Alice Armstrong to the deep pocket grooves of Willie Buck and Bob Corritore, Dave Specter, and The Steady Rollin' Revue, there isn't a wasted second. Rounding it all out with the Backyard Casanovas, Kilborn Alley, Mighty Mike Schermer, and Charlie and the Fez Kings, it's an hour of music that flows perfectly from one story to the next. It's a masterclass in why the blues is and always will be the truth.

This week on Blues is the Truth we take a step back and look across the last twelve months with a sort of best of 2025 show. It is not about charts or hype, just a chance to spend time with some of the music that really stood out and stayed with us over the year. The records that got replayed, the tracks that made us stop what we were doing and listen properly, and the artists who reminded us why this music still matters so much. Hosted as ever by Ian McHugh, the show brings together a rich spread of contemporary blues and blues rooted sounds, with music from Matt Schofield, Buddy Guy, GA 20, Emma Wilson, John Primer, Monster Mike Welch, Zoe Schwarz Rob Koral and Friends, Andy Twyman, Johnny Burgin, Burning Rope, Roomful of Blues, Robbin Kapsalis, Maria Muldaur, Andrew Duncanson, Richard Clarke, Andy Fairweather Low, Larry McCray, Bob Corritore and Friends, Taj Mahal, Tommy Castro and the Painkillers, The Terraplanes Blues Band, Janiva Magness, Bluebird Blues with Ronnie Earl Dave Specter and Barking Bill Smith, and Dave Specter. There is no single theme other than quality and feeling. Some of these tracks are fiery and loud, some are subtle and soulful, but they all earned their place by being honest and memorable. It is a reminder of just how strong the blues scene is right now and how much great music is still being made. If you have been with the show all year this is a lovely way to revisit some highlights. If you have dipped in and out, or are new to Blues is the Truth, this episode is a great place to jump in. Sit back, turn it up a little and enjoy some of the finest blues sounds of 2025.

Dave Specter didn't pick up a guitar till his late teens, yet in his 20s he was Son Seals' rhythm guitarist for two years, and soon he was a bandleader himself. Specter grew up amid Chicago's blues scene and became one of its great players and ambassadors. Here he recalls the glory days of Chicago's blues clubs and the varying vibes. He recounts the evolution of his sound and his progression of guitars. He explains how he creates a solo and why, after years of playing mostly instrumentals with the occasional guest vocalist, he began singing. He tells how his recently released “The Times They Are Deranging (The Buck Stops Where?)” fits in with the songs of conscience he always has admired. And he offers the origin story of Space, the excellent, musician-friendly Evanston, Ill. club where he's a partner. (Photo by Mike Hoffman)

Celebrate National Pinot Noir Day with our Big Blend Radio "Winemaker Insider" Conversation with Dave Specter, who along with his wife Sara, owns and runs Bells Up Winery in Willamette Valley, Oregon.  After more than a decade of success as a corporate tax attorney in Cincinnati, Ohio, Dave was emotionally and physically spent. Sara, a freelance marketing consultant and writer, convinced him to leave the profession and they turned the hobby that brought him joy—winemaking—into his new career. The pair had fallen in love with Newberg and Oregon's Willamette Valley while on vacation in 2008, subsequently moving there in 2012 and establishing Bells Up Winery in 2013. The first wines were released Memorial Day 2015, coinciding with the opening of the estate winery/tasting room. The on-site production facility was built and equipped in time for 2019 harvest. Bells Up is a micro-boutique winery that composes handcrafted, classically styled Pinot Noir, Rosé, Pinot Blanc, Seyval Blanc, Syrah, and Cabernet Sauvignon with grapes sourced exclusively from its estate, and from micro-sites in the Willamette Valley and Eastern Oregon. The winery makes ~600 cases annually. More: https://bellsupwinery.com/

We're coming up on the ninth anniversary of Indy In-Tune.  I will admit, when I started this project, I probably didn't know a fourth of what I thought I knew about the local music scene.  Over the years, I think I've picked up a bit of knowledge, seen a few bands, and made friends with a few people.  Of course then I get in a conversation with someone like Jeff Sample or Dave Brown and I feel like I'm right back there where I started.  Granted I live to hear new music and meet new musicians for the very first time, but glancing at the upcoming schedule -- much of it courtesy of Ms. Leslie Lynnton-Fuller and her deep connections in the Jazz, Blues, and Soul scene here in town -- and I'm once again awe-struck at just how much music is out there that I haven't even scratched the surface of after all these years. This week, for example, we meet Mr. Tad Robinson. Now, of course we've all heard the name and the music, but wow, now he's actually ... like ... here ... in Studio B!  Tad is a New Yorker by birth, but we give him a pass because he's a graduate of the IU school of music.  Over a career that spans four decades now, he's lent his talents to the likes of such regional and national acts as the Hesitation Blues Band, Big Shoulders, Dave Specter and the Bluebirds, and others.  Beyond that, his solo career, has earned him a string of soul and blues-related awards including multiple Album of the Year and Artist of the Year nods ... and still he finds time to hang out in Studio B, talk shop, and play lightning round with the likes of us.  Trust me, you owe it to yourself to listen to this music and hear the stories from the man himself. Contrary to popular belief, the blues is not all about the bad in life or a genre of exclusively sad songs. But, it is about life and is presented with a broad spectrum of views and styles. Mitch Kashmar & The Pontiax, Eden Brent, Jay Gaunt, Dave Specter, and JW-Jones play songs about life in this hour. It's all part of the real picture of blues - big and small, diverse and defiant. And it definitely builds to another hour of the finest blues you've never heard - the 290th Roadhouse.
