In 1997, Tony Blair's government inherited a problem: tuberculosis in cattle was rising, farmers were furious, and nobody agreed on whether badgers were responsible. The solution was to commission a gold-standard randomised control trial — 30 sites across the southwest of England, three conditions, run by an independent scientific group. Proper science. No cutting corners.Eleven years and £49 million later, the trial produced findings that made things more complicated, not less. Reactive culling of badgers made TB rates worse. Proactive culling helped inside cull zones but increased rates in surrounding areas. Two expert panels reviewed the same data and reached opposite conclusions. And by the time the final report landed, the minister who commissioned the review had left office, the department had been restructured, and the politics had moved somewhere else entirely. This episode is the first in our three-part series on evaluation in government. It's not an argument against evidence — it's an argument for being honest about what evidence can and can't deliver, and what happens when government treats a long-run trial as a substitute for judgment rather than an input into it.Also: there are quite a lot of badgers.Referenced in the show Angela Cassidy's book — Vermin, Victims and DiseaseThe New Yorker article on placebos in RCTs, The Power of Nothing by Michael SpecterAustralian Centre for Evaluation's paper on RCTsThis podcast was recorded on Kaurna land, and we recognise Kaurna elders past and present. Always was, always will be.Now for some appropriately bureaucratic disclaimers....While we have tried to be as thorough in our research as busy full time jobs and lives allow, we definitely don't guarantee that we've got all the details right. Please feel free to email us corrections, episode suggestions, or anything else, at thewestminstertraditionpod@gmail.com.Thanks to PanPot audio for our intro and outro music. 'Til next time!

A cat jumps on the stove to get leftovers, accidentally turns a burner, and starts a kitchen fire. The homeowner has heard of an exclusion that applies to damage caused by animals owned or kept by an insured, and is concerned that the fire will not be covered. Exactly how mad should the homeowner be with their cat? (And how long can they stay mad at that face?) Notable Timestamps [ 00:00 ] - A kitchen fire caused by a pet can initially alarm insureds who may believe the animal exclusion automatically bars coverage for any damage involving their cat or dog. [ 00:53 ] - The discussion highlights how insureds may hesitate to disclose that a pet caused the loss because they fear the claim will be denied under the policy language. [ 03:39 ] - Investigating unusual fire losses often requires origin-and-cause experts, especially when evidence suggests a stove burner was turned on without any appliance malfunction. [ 05:07 ] - The key distinction is that animal-caused property damage itself may be excluded, while the resulting fire can still qualify as a covered peril under the policy. [ 05:50 ] - Claims involving uncommon exclusions remind adjusters to carefully read the actual policy wording instead of relying on assumptions about what is or is not covered. [ 06:12 ] - Ordinary pet damage like chewing, scratching, or staining is different from a sudden accidental event such as a kitchen fire. [ 07:24 ] - Adjusters generally approach claims by looking for coverage where it exists. [ 08:45 ] - Animal exclusions are often intended to address ongoing maintenance-type damage rather than fortuitous accidental losses. [ 10:10 ] - While some courts have interpreted animal exclusions broadly, the cited cases involved extreme situations with dozens of pets causing extensive property damage. [ 11:54 ] - Maintaining good communication and rapport with insureds can help overcome misconceptions about coverage and encourage honest discussion during the investigation. This week on The LA Food Podcast, Luca is joined by food writer Karen Palmer and LA food influencer Rick Lox for a two-part episode covering the state of Los Angeles restaurants, food media, and the city's never-ending dining discourse. First, Karen breaks down the latest LA restaurant storylines, from the rise of luxury grocery stores like Laurel Supply to the possible comeback of the Helms Design District, plus recent eats at Jacaranda, Picala, Gjusta, and Pijja Palace. She and Luca also get into the new Helms District, Santee Alley after last year's ICE raids, the Roll Em Up Taquitos controversy, vermin-related restaurant closures, the New York Times 100 Best Restaurants in NYC list, bromated flour, and Dine Latino Restaurant Week. Then Luca sits down with Adam Alper, better known as Rick Lox, one of LA's most recognizable food influencers, to talk about how he built his platform, the origin of the Rick Lox name, his rating system, dealing with haters, why Shibuya is his favorite restaurant of all time, why In-N-Out still matters, and the LA restaurants he thinks are truly elite, including Dunsmoor and République. Rick also opens up about what makes a restaurant review trustworthy, how social media has changed the LA dining scene, and why helping great restaurants find new customers is still the best part of the job.--Please consider supporting Luca's efforts to raise funds for Soccer Without Borders - LOVE YOU!

Welcome back to Black Hoodie Alchemy, folks! This week, we have a huge wild-card episode with the only political show I've ever done and probably will ever do. Really, the whole point is actually approaching politics from an apolitical standpoint. There really are no politics -- there are just common people and the ultra elite. The vermin and exterminators. Anarchism (society without structured rule) sounds nice at times, but it will inevitably create a power vacuum. Communism might sound nice in theory but never in practice. Capitalism, what seems like our best option, has become a system that feeds off its weak and impoverished by necessity. Republicans and Democrats (and any other political party for that matter) seem to be so far up their own asses that they're tickling their tonsils... So where does that leave us -- the vermin class that all these parties and politicians are constantly trying to divide and conquer? Unless we band together like the rats, the roaches, and the vermin we are, we're all fucked. To help guide us this episode I read the latest release, a small "chapbook of prose poetry" written by my dear friend and colleague, Eric J. Millar of Outlet Press and We the Hallowed Media. The title of this work is PEST CONTROL: MEDITATIONS ON THE VERMIN CLASS, and this will actually mark the third episode in a row where I read from Eric's various works, which was unintentional but something I am more than happy to do! The first were part 1 and 2 of the Four Color Grimoire, and since this latest work of his impacted me so sincerely with its striking imagery, I felt that this was as good a time as any to round home plate with one more Millar brain-child! Maoordered the sparrows killed, believing they consumed grain; however, because sparrows feed their young on insects, their eradication led to an insect population boom. The subsequent crop failures caused a famine that resulted in potentially 45 to 50 million deaths, making it the worst human-created disaster in history. The segment contrasts this tragedy with the "Emu Wars" in 1930s Australia, where highly adaptable Emussuccessfully defeated the Australian army. 1938

Practical Stoicism
Death and the Choice to Live Wisely (Meditations 3.3)

Practical Stoicism

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 7, 2025 17:30

In this episode, I reflect on Meditation 3.3 from Marcus Aurelius' Meditations, exploring its central themes: the inevitability of death, the futility of fearing it, and the Stoic imperative to live well while we can. Marcus reminds us that even the most accomplished and revered figures—be they healers, conquerors, or philosophers—ultimately succumb to mortality. Their stories serve as a humbling reminder of our shared fate and an encouragement to prioritize virtue over fame, power, or fear. Key Takeaways: Mortality as a Universal Truth: From Hippocrates, the renowned healer, to Alexander the Great, a world conqueror, and even pre-Socratic philosophers like Heraclitus and Democritus, death claims everyone regardless of their accomplishments, intellect, or virtue. The Two Reasons to Remember Mortality: (1) It motivates us to cherish the time we have and use it wisely, both for personal growth and to nurture meaningful relationships. (2) It grounds us in the natural order, reminding us that we are part of Nature and subject to its laws. Why Immortality Isn't the Goal: The aim of life isn't to avoid death but to live virtuously. A good life is defined by our choices and actions in the present, not by the number of years we accumulate. Marcus' Reassurance About Death: Marcus suggests that death leads to one of two outcomes: either we transition to another life governed by reason, or we enter a state of eternal rest free from pain and struggle. Both are nothing to fear. Living in Accord with Nature: Death, like all aspects of life, is part of the rational order of the Cosmos. By accepting it as natural, we can focus on fulfilling our purpose—striving for virtue and contributing to the Cosmopolis. “Hippocrates, after curing many sicknesses, himself fell sick and died. The Chaldean astrologers foretold the death of many persons, then the hour of fate overtook them also. Alexander, Pompeius, and Julius Caesar, after so often utterly destroying whole towns and slaying in the field many myriads of horse and foot, themselves also one day departed from life. Heraclitus, after many speculations about the fire which should consume the Universe, was waterlogged by dropsy, poulticed himself with cow-dung and died. Vermin killed Democritus; another kind of vermin Socrates. What is the moral? You went on board, you set sail, you have made the port. Step ashore: if to a second life, nothing is void of gods, not even in that other world; but if to unconsciousness, you will cease to suffer pains and pleasures and to be the servant of an earthly vessel as far inferior as that which does it service is superior; for the one is mind and deity, the other clay and gore.” - Meditations 3.3 -- Go ad-free : https://stoicismpod.com/members Join the Discord Community : https://stoicismpod.com/discord Follow the print publication : https://stoicismpod.com/print Take my free courses : https://stoicismpod.com/courses Order my book : https://stoicismpod.com/book Source Text : https://stoicismpod.com/far Follow me on BlueSky: https://bsky.app/profile/tannerocampbell.bsky.social Follow me on YouTube: https://youtube.com/@stoicismpod Learn more about your ad choices. Toothsome fiends, interfering pests, or creatures wild and free, wolves have been at the heart of Canada's national story since long before Confederation. Villain, Vermin, Icon, Kin: Wolves and the Making of Canada (McGill-Queen's University Press, 2022) by Dr. Stephanie Rutherford contends that the role in which wolves have been cast - monster or hero - has changed dramatically through time. Exploring the social history of wolves in Canada, Dr. Rutherford weaves an innovative tapestry from the varied threads of historical and contemporary texts, ideas, and practices in human-wolf relations, from provincial bounties to Farley Mowat's iconic Never Cry Wolf. These examples reveal that Canada was made, in part, through relationships with nonhuman animals. Wolves have always captured the human imagination. In sketching out the connections people have had with wolves at different times, Villain, Vermin, Icon, Kin offers a model for more ethical ways of interacting with animals in the face of a global biodiversity crisis. Sam discusses the cruel and nakedly fascist “mass deportation” plank of both Project 2025 and the official GOP platform. Then, she talks with Dr. Alberto Toscano, author of Late Fascism: Race, Capitalism and the Politics of Crisis. Robin D. G. Kelley writes: "Late Fascism is brilliant, incisive, and right on time. We are living through a moment when the "F" word is no longer taboo and the threat of fascism lurks everywhere. And yet, so mired in debates over definitions, typologies, and analogies that our understanding of fascism remains elusive. Alberto Toscano avoids this trap by turning to anti-fascist thinkers, whose groundings in anticolonial, antiracist, and anticapitalist struggles remind us that liberalism is no enemy of fascism, and fascists flower in the hot house of capitalism."
