Welcome to another episode of Exploring Humanity Through Sci-Fi. Today, we're taking you back to season one of Surreal Estate, the hit SyFy series that puts a supernatural spin on haunted house real estate. Host Tony Tellado sits down with special guest Tennille Read, who played Megan Donovan, a pragmatic and skeptical med student who inherits a mysteriously haunted house with a life of its own. Tennille dives into what it was like bringing Megan to life—a character torn between logic and the paranormal—as she navigates spooky occurrences, a tangled love life, and a not-so-average real estate agent, Luke Roman. Tennille shares behind-the-scenes stories about the striking set, working opposite Tim Rozon, and how the show skillfully blends horror, humor, and genuine heart. We also get an insider peek at on-set special effects, the challenges of filming during the height of COVID-19 in the hauntingly beautiful St. John's, Newfoundland, and teases about Megan's journey as she confronts both haunted hallways and her own personal crossroads. “I spent most of my career in advertising,” says George Olson. “I had always wanted to write for movies and television, but I live in Colorado, not exactly the screenwriting mecca of North America, so I started reading scripts, screenplays, and just started writing.” As a former copywriter and creative director, Olson his start really came from “writing bad screenplays.” He continues, “That's the only way to eventually write good screenplays.” He read all of the big books on the subject and many interviews from Creative Screenwriting as a foundation. “I started entering some competitions and I won a couple of screenwriting contests. There was just enough encouragement. It's like playing golf. You can hit terrible shots the whole day, then hit one beautiful shot, and then you love the game.” Thanks to these early wins, Olson was on a path to meet producers and pitch ideas. He eventually developed a project with Barry Sonnenfield (Men in Black) and John Turturro (The Big Lebowski). “For an advertising writer in Colorado, it was fairly heady stuff.” One particular idea gained some traction, but Olson's reps told him to transition it to a television idea. “I read every pilot I could get my hands on, starting writing television, and found that I loved it.” The screenwriter is best known for creating the series, Surreal Estate, a series about Real Estate agents who deal with haunted houses. Welcome, one and all, to another red hot episode of Stace and Barry In The Morning! Scorchio! This episode, both Stace and Barry ain't got time to bleed as they both dig into the slice of fried gold that is Prey, whilst Stacey sings the praises of Paper Girls, and Barry is in the market for a haunted house with Surreal Estate. All this, plus some minor heat-addled antics. Grab an ice lolly (an acceptable breakfast in this heat) and enjoy! The Stace and Barry Musical Musings playlist
In an episode almost seven years in the making, actor Tim Rozon (Lost Girl, Schitt's Creek, Wynonna Earp, Vagrant Queen, Surreal Estate and the new family film Dakota) shares his love for My Own Private Idaho, and the incandescent, indelible performance of River Phoenix within Gus Van Sant's masterful 1991 indie drama. Your genial host Norm Wilner is really just an enabler here, but also feels he really underestimated what Keanu Reeves was doing the first time around. (Also, have you subscribed to Norm's Shiny Things newsletter yet? You really should!)
