Sarah Levy comes from a pretty funny family. Her dad is the comedy legend Eugene Levy, her brother is Dan Levy, and all three of them were on the Emmy-winning show “Schitt's Creek.” But Sarah says the funniest one of them all is her mom, who's also the person in her family who's had the biggest influence on her comedy. Sarah joins Tom Power to talk about stepping out of the shadow of “Schitt's Creek” to carve her own path with “SurrealEstate,” which is now in its third season. If you like this conversation, check out Tom's interview with Sarah's brother, Dan Levy.

Hi everyone! I hope you're all having a wonderful Spring. I'm so excited for you to listen to today's episode! If you're a fan of Schitt's Creek, then you know Sarah Levy from playing Twyla in the show-- she also happens to be the daughter of Eugene Levy and the sister of Dan Levy. I had such a fun time hearing the inside scoop on that show, which is one of my favorites of all time, as well as what it was like to grow up in such a funny family. Sarah is currently starring as Aunt Ida in a new horror movie called The Monkey, which is adapted from a Stephen King short story and directed by Osgood Perkins. We talk about how much fun she had doing horror (if you haven't seen the movie yet, it sounds TERRIFYING). Sarah lost her home in the Palisades fire, so the conversation starts in a vulnerable place— but I'm so glad it did, because we get to go deep pretty fast, and I feel like I made a new friend! Be sure to stick around for the hindsight, where my producer Jeph and I talk about the episode and respond to listener fact checks from the Mail Sack! Top Chef Destination Canada had the opportunity to do the funniest thing possible, and they did it! We have a double header of classic Canadian delicacies: poutine and maple syrup. #47 Author Sarah Levy joins us on the show today to talk about recovery and her recently published book, “Drinking Games.” In her early 20's, Sarah realized that being a self-described “party girl” was actually a problem with alcohol. We discuss the shift that happened when she finally asked for help, what it was like to get sober as a young person, and so much more: How it was hard to admit even to herself that she had a problem, because everything looked good on the outside, Sarah's shame in early sobriety, and the shift that happened when she started to write publicly about her experiences, The feedback she received from young women when her book was published, and how it felt to know she was making a difference in their lives, What it feels like to write for the public versus writing as a tool for healing, The joy of community in recovery- and encouragement for anyone still seeking the community that feels right for them. Sarah Levy is the author of Drinking Games, a memoir in essays from St. Martin's Press. Her writing explores sobriety, relationships, culture, and identity, and has appeared in The New York Times, The Cut, Vogue, Glamour, TIME, Elle, Refinery29, and Cosmopolitan, among other publications.

Are drinking games for lovers or losers? Does alcohol make sex better and wetter or dryer and dimmer? A study by Kathryn Lakeland of Femfresh found that 75 per cent of women said they liked to drink before getting into bed with their husband or boyfriend. In this episode we ask those in the 75 per cent to examine if this is a powerful or limiting decision. Many share that alcohol makes them feel confident, flirty and powerful, but also less aware, less excited and more prone to regrettable decisions. My guest on this episode, ‘Drinking Games' Author, Sarah Levy once described being drunk on dates as a mandatory activity that made her feel like she had warm honey in her veins. Now, she is 5 years sober and ready to tell the world why. In this episode, I am also joined by licensed therapist Erica Lubetkin who specializes in anxiety and addiction. Erica breaks down how alcohol can momentarily spike dopamine in your system, but the lasting effects are not so good. This podcast is intended to spark hard-to-have conversations in your romantic and sexual life that lead to powerful shifts. I genuinely believe this episode delivers on that promise because we are talking about some powerful shit - alcohol. Thanks to the sponsor of this episode, Better Help! Today's guest is Sarah Levy; she's a writer in recovery and author of the new book “Drinking Games.” At the age of 28, Sarah, on paper, looked like she had it all together, a great job – and a successful life that was on track. The truth was she felt empty and alone, suffered from blackouts, and repeatedly put herself in dangerous situations. Sarah thought using alcohol helped heal her broken heart, empowered her to date, and quenched her thirst for validation. But drinking only numbed her pain and dimmed her light as she dated different kinds of men, feeling perpetually hung over and spiritually bankrupt. When she gave up alcohol, she thought her life was over. But for Sarah, her last sip was the moment when her life started. In sobriety, she fell in love, changed careers, moved across the country, got married, published a must-read book, and became the woman she is today. If you're looking to change your relationship with alcohol, are sober curious, or want to be inspired, then this episode is for you!Sarah Levy is the author of Drinking Games, a memoir in essays from St. Martin's Press. Her writing has appeared in The New York Times, New York Magazine (The Cut), Glamour, Elle, Vogue, Refinery29, and Cosmopolitan, among other publications. Sarah has written articles such as “Falling In Love Without Alcohol” and “Giving Up Alcohol Made Me Date Again Like a Teenager.” Drinking Games has been named most anticipated by Good Morning America, Good Day DC, the LA Times, New York Post, Zibby Mag, Buzzfeed Books, Pure Wow, and Apple Books to name a few. And the favorable reviews keep on coming! Sarah is a graduate of Brown University and lives in Los Angeles by way of New York City.I'm excited to feature Sarah on Shot@Love today and admire her greatly for spreading awareness around sobriety and her goals to change the culture around addiction and alcoholism. Today I am joined by writer and author Sarah Levy. Sarah's work focuses on the intersection of sobriety, relationships, and identity and has appeared in The New York Times, The Cut, Cosmopolitan, Refinery29, The Washington Post, and more. Her debut novel Drinking Games will be out in early 2023. Sarah and I discuss why Sarah decided to get sober despite not having a clear cut drinking problem. She gets into her life before vs. after quitting drinking and how difficult it was for her initially to come out to her friends, family, and the people she was dating, but how when she eventually did it, it changed her life for the better. She is passionate about how her decision has bettered her energy levels, relationships, body image, and more-- as she says in the episode, “it's like waking up in clean sheets every day.” We also get into how We Met at Acme podcast host Lindsey Metselaar introduced her to her now fiancé as well as her engagement story. Follow Sarah @sarahllevy and find her writing at https://www.sarahllevy.com/. Welcome back! Today we are joined by lifestyle writer, Sarah Levy, who's work focuses on sobriety, relationships, and personal identity. Sarah's writing has appeared in The New York Times, The Cut, Cosmopolitan, Refinery29, among many other publications, and her book, Drinking Games, will be coming out in January 2023. Sarah is down to earth and relatable and recording this episode felt just like chatting with a friend! Sarah shares her story of how she decided to go after her dream of becoming a writer years after graduating college with her Creative Writing degree. She opens up about what led her to stop drinking and what her experience has been like when it comes to dating, friendships, and sobriety. We talk about the role alcohol commonly plays throughout college and the years after and how scary it can be to decide to give something up that can sometimes feel like it is holding your friendships and relationships together. We also talk about success, the fear that many of us have that there isn't enough to go around, and how to overcome that. Sarah and her fiancé were actually set up by one of our former guests, and she tells us how they met, what it was like doing long distance, and how they eventually decided to move to LA and settle down. Sarah Levy ("Twyla Sands") joins us on the Afterbuzz TV after show to discuss season 6, episode 12 "The Pitch." Johnny, Stevie, and Roland head to New York to pitch their "Rosebud Motel Group" idea but it finds a less than friendly "Shark Tank." Meanwhile, the other three Roses make plans for a move back to New York while the rest of the town wonders if the idea is premature. Where Patrick is normally laid back and accommodating to David's antics he gives a less-than-excited glance towards Stevie that a move to the Big Apple is very much not what he signed up for.
