Taegan Goddard's been in the blogging game for a long time, launching his first website before WordPress even existed. He went on to create his current website, Political Wire, which has been not only running but growing consistently for the last 25 years—no easy feat. Taegan has built “the anti-website,” using non-SEO strategies to win over his political junkie readers and convert them into diehard fans while using several different business models. He has a different approach to how he treats readers and how he thinks about content compared with a “normal blog,” and in this insightful interview he shares it all. Taegan Goddard joins The Great Battlefield podcast to talk about his career in politics and founding Political Wire, a popular news website focused on politics.
Hey everyone! Thanks for tuning in and being patient with me. I was actually supposed to release a solo episode last week but my family suffered a very sudden loss. My cousin Delicia passed on from this world at a whopping 22 years of age. I talked a little bit about it at the beginning of this episode and it's a strange but poetic coincidence that this week's episode is very much centered around grief and how sometimes beautiful things can come out of that space with time. My cousin was an amazing person and this episode is dedicated to her. If you want to learn more about her story you can do so here. As an accomplished singer and musician it is her family's wish to set up a scholarship in her name. If you feel so moved to contribute it would mean the world. Now to introduce this week's guest! Taegan Maclean is a Writer/filmmaker exploring his life and the world around him one word at a time. He created his deeply personal and insightful newsletter titled One Word in 2022 and he took on the ambitious task of adapting it into a monthly video docuseries format this year. I think his story really shows what can happen when you are truly aligned with a passion project and lean into your most vulnerable self. Grief is a difficult thing and we all get through it differently. Taegan was open about his struggles grieving the loss of his father which ultimately shaped the creator he is today.Find Taegan's One Word Newsletter featuring his full collection of written pieces and his video series here. His latest documentary titled Woodbine, is a beautiful love letter of sorts to his father and I encourage you all to grab a hot beverage and take it in! When mum-of-two and mental health peer worker, Taegan, was first diagnosed with bipolar mood disorder, she didn't believe motherhood and her mental illness would mix. So in the lead up to starting a family, Taegan spent years preparing, learning, getting second opinions, asking questions, and researching - everything she thought to best navigate motherhood with her diagnosis. After a manageable pregnancy and postpartum with her first daughter, Taegan expected herself to navigate any challenges that could arise with a second baby in the same way. Unfortunately, nothing could have prepared Taegan for a surprise postpartum depression diagnosis followed by an involuntary admission to a psychiatric hospital - four hours away from her daughters. I thank @nurture_by_taegan for sharing so openly about the unpredictability of navigating pregnancy and motherhood with a pre-existing mental health diagnosis - from postpartum rage, TMS, medication, mixed opinions from health professionals, societal misconceptions about mental ill health, and relapse prevention, to the power of self-compassion along the way. She's a free spirit and wasn't made to work in a cubicle. Meet entrepreneur Taegan Crim who started a company that provides a space for entertainment via a converted school bus. Her company is called BoHo Bus Events out of Birmingham, Alabama. Her slogan is that “We Bring the arty to You.” You will find her tenacity impressive and you get to walk through some of the process of their bus renovation and how she forged her career path out of college. The BoHo is her style and she's ready to share. Coming back to Alabama from California Taegan brought her marketing background and launched her business. She found her market by putting the concept out there and the parties range from kids to senior adults. The coolest aspect about the whole idea is that she's not stuck in one group or one style. She drives the bus some, but has the help of family to get her there. Her drive and mission statement is to be able to have an event for anyone so they can feel special and celebrated and have an event that is tailored to them. We talk about what it's like to spend money and how to be organized. She says her personality is to be organized but she learned as she was growing up and watching her dad. She has a good support group around her. Learning from others and knowing when to ask for help is key. She has grown in the way to learn to work together. Taegan shares stories of how they roll and she shares one of the panic moments that happened in the first events and setting up. You will enjoy her energy and be inspired to follow your own dreams. We do talk about obstacles in life—nerves— and how she recognizes and deals with judgement. Watching people do amazing things with their life and not comparing yourself is a struggle and being an entrepreneur can make you question. For now she is growing and being consistent. We also talk about her personal life and dating an athlete who has his own limelight. They've dated long distance and have learned a bit how to balance. Her advice to young women is to follow who you are and take leaps of faith and within reason take risks. DOn't define success by a monetary number. Tune in!! Walking through a forest at dusk, you’ve likely heard the croaks and groans of frogs and toads forming a chorus in the damp undergrowth. But what if the forest were suddenly, inexplicably, silent? In the 1980s scientists started noticing the forests becoming quieter as amphibian populations around the globe began to decline -- rapidly. Today we are joined by Dr. Taegan McMahon from the University of Tampa to discuss our first ever wildlife disease: chytridiomycosis. Chytrid fungus, or Bd for short, has wreaked havoc on amphibian populations for the last several decades, and researchers are still trying to find a way to stop it. For more information on Chytrid and Taegan’s research, follow her lab on instagram @mcmahon_lab. On today's episode we're proud to welcome TAEGAN GODDARD, founder of one of the most influential and earliest political websites: www.politicalwire.com, the best news aggregator on the internet. Taegan looks back at 20 years of running what was a political blog before blogs even existed and turning it into the preeminent website it is today. We talk about news curation, why we benefit from listening to our children's opinions about politics rather than imparting our own and get a sneak preview of Teagan's forthcoming book "Spitball: The New Rules of Our Broken Politics". It's a fascinating conversation with one of the sharpest analysts of not only daily politics, but the currents and riptides underneath it all.

I wanted to step away from the daily politics today and take a bit of a longer view, because maybe you’re wondering the same thing I am: What’s going on with the Republican Party? Everywhere you turn there’s another layer of erosion, whether from politicians or party elders or longtime political donors. Regardless of who wins the Presidency, something big has changed within the Republican Party. And I don’t care which party you belong to, if either of them looks like it’s disintegrating before our eyes, that means definitionally that our political system – the one that’s done us pretty well over the last 200 years – is changing. Now to be clear, I’m not saying change is bad or that it hasn’t happened before. And I’m definitely not saying it’s not needed. But change is underway, and for anyone the least bit curious, the question becomes: What’s next? That’s what I wanted to learn in this conversation: Where is the Republican Party today and what’s next? We pulled together two great guests to help us think about it. Matt Lewis is a senior contributor at The Daily Caller, a CNN political commentator, and author of Too Dumb to Fail: How the GOP Betrayed the Reagan Revolution to Win Elections (And How It Can Reclaim Its Conservative Roots). Matt also serves as a contributing editor for The Week and as a weekly columnist for Roll Call. Taegan Goddard, as we know, is founder and publisher of Political Wire. I’d tell you that Taegan thinks and writes about politics continually – even in his spare time – but I happen to know he has no spare time. So let’s leave it at continually. It was a really thoughtful conversation with these two who come at the question from different perspectives. And I hate to disappoint any of you who are addicted to the cable TV shows, but there’s no yelling or screaming in this podcast. There’s not even any name-calling. … maybe this conversation wasn’t as good as I thought it was. Well, you’ll have to judge.

The 2016 presidential campaign is shaping up as Hillary Clinton's race to lose -- unless everything we know about politics is wrong. Clinton is leading Donald Trump in the national polls and most state polls as well. Nearly every forecast at this point show s landslide in the Electoral College. She has put together a better national campaign. She's running way more television ads. But can she win?
On this week's episode of Sneak Attack!, the gang is finally back in one place, albeit having changed and grown throughout the fracture. With all four of them in Brightcove, will they be able to follow through with Taegan's plan, or would Draagus convince them to follow him instead? Find out right now! The candidates may be riding the subway in New York. Perhaps they’re thinking about Pennsylvania – Even California. But all political eyes are on Cleveland. While polls show Donald Trump crushing in the Big Apple, Ted Cruz was the Big Cheese in Wisconsin. Cruz’ double-digit win there significantly increased the chances of a contested Republican Convention. 538’s panel of experts estimates Trump will fall short of the magic 1,237 delegates. As The University of Virginia Center for Politics told the New York Times: “The chances of a contested convention just went up.” It’s no surprise that the frontrunners say a wide-open, no-holds-barred contested convention would devastate the Republican Party; delegitimize the entire primary process; silence the precious voice of primary voters. It would bring disaster. But would it? Or instead at this point, might a contested convention be exactly the thing Republicans should hope for? Taegan Goddard, as we all know, runs Taegan Goddard’s Political Wire. He spends the totality of his waking hours and many of his sleeping ones scouring political news of the day.
Chris Riback and Taegan Goddard discuss the how Donald Trump's campaign not only broke the Republican party but broke political science. What in the world is going on? We are well into a primary season with results few of us expected, headed straight to a general election that even fewer dare to predict. All of us – and certainly both major political parties – are in unchartered territory. For Democrats, their new location at least appears to be on a pre-existing map. For Republicans, their new map reveals a planet they never knew existed – a place that frequently shows little signs of gravity – and I mean both definitions of the word, with its lack of seriousness alongside a certain amount of weightlessness. This place is a foreign territory – there’s no huge wall to keep us out. It’s a place where the leading candidate and possible nominee is hated by the party establishment, actively running against the Party – and Party ideology – he hopes to represent. Yet this new planet may be exactly where the future of politics is headed. A place where the direct connection between candidate and voter has changed – and governs – everything. So how did we get here? More importantly, where are we going? To kick off our season and help us find answers, there’s no one better than my friend and Political Wire’s namesake, Taegan Goddard.
