Tara Button is the founder and CEO of Buy Me Once, a platform which helps people buy the longest-lasting products on the planet. If you've heard me talking about the 3 essential strategies for circular businesses, you'll know that one of those 3 strategies is Keeping things in use for longer, through durability, repairability and resellability. I get frustrated by how difficult it is to find good examples of companies doing this, and so it was brilliant to discover Buy Me Once, which is all about finding products that meet that criteria and helping people find them. Back in 2015, Tara was a frustrated advertising creative, tasked with increasing the chocolate consumption of children, when the gift of an heirloom cooking pot sparked the idea of Buy Me Once. The platform went spectacularly viral in 2016, allowing Tara to leave Ad Land. Since then, Buy Me Once has partnered with 100s of ethical brands to help consumers buy for the long term, for a wide range of products from kitchenware to bedlinen, home furnishings to electronics, and for clothing. Tara explains what led her to start Buy Me Once, and the ethos underpinning the choice of featured brands and products. We hear what is driving the push for more durable, repairable products, and how the feedback from customers can help brands to improve their products. Tara has also become a disruptive voice, speaking about product durability at events, on TV, podcasts and BBC radio. Tara's early career in marketing and advertising meant she could unpack the psychology of consumerism, and she has written a very engaging and insightful book on mindful consumption, A Life Less Throwaway, published by Harper Collins. We touch on aspects of what's in the book, which has some great tips to help us spot the various kinds of marketing tactics before we get sucked into the ‘buy it now' decision.

Joining me in the coaching time machine this week is a founder whose story many of you will relate to. Tara Button's company Buy Me Once had outgrown v1 of her site as well as the platform she originally launched on. It's a problem first time founders hope to have.Tara knew she had to rebuild and relaunch in order to scale. But this is not a conversation about mistakes she made along the way. Because, as you'll hear in this episode, Tara did nearly everything right. She outsourced talent to make up for the areas she lacked expertise, she used her network to vet her developers, she set a deliverable and a timeline. It should have been a successful launch and it wasn't. So why is that?In this episode, we talk about the notion of sunk cost fallacy and why certain deeply help beliefs and fears influenced Tara's decisions in her journey. If you want to see how future fit you are then take 3 minutes to find out your Peer Score at www.peer-effect.com/peerscore

Tara Button had an idea of a website and community that put a spotlight on long lasting products and true consumer satisfaction first - and that idea stalked her until she had to create it and launch it for the world to utilize. Her site is Buy Me Once, and it is completely changing not only how consumers find products that are built to last, but how companies are realizing that repair and a warranty are two criteria that are moving up the list for most shoppers. Tara joins Sam to talk about how she saw the need for Buy Me Once, how they changed their business model to now sell directly to consumers, and her advice for building a community around your website. She also gives us a few of her favorite brands featured on Buy Me Once, and how to know when you are really getting quality items. What You Will Discover This Week: In a world of paid reviews and wanting everything quickly on demand, it can get confusing to know where to shop and what products will last the test of time. Tara talks about why products are meant to break physically along with stylewise, and how it is time for that to change. What Buy Me Once is, and Tara knew there was nothing of it's kind and greatly needed in the consumer world. The less we have to buy things, the more we save money for ourselves and keep our environment clean. What Tara thinks the future is for the Right to Repair Act and companies including life cycle labeling and more transparency about how long their products really will last. Why Tara decided to change the business model of Buy Me Once from affiliate marketing to selling directly out of their warehouse. Some of her favorite brands and recommendations both in and beyond Buy Me Once. Who to really seek honest reviews from instead of basing everything off Amazon. Companies and industries realised one thing: consumers don’t buy many products if the products are built to last. On the other hand, short-lived products will be replaced, so building fragile items means companies create additional “demand” and in the end, more profit. In today’s world, this regular and repeated consumerism has been indented into our lives. From Seasonal Fashion to feeling invigorated when buying new furniture, we’re used to receiving positive feedback from following our shopping urges. These shopping habits are not always good for the planet because of the amount of waste created from making these products. Take it from Tara Button, marketing expert, and founder and CEO of Buymeonce.com and a Champion of Buying Less, and Buying Better. “BuyMeOnce” sells all kinds of products that are built to last. Whether it’s pots and pans, fashion, healthcare, bed linen, bottles, backpacks or bikes, all their featured products are sustainably produced and chosen because they’re meant to last a long time. Their code of business is an idea worth following: “We’re demanding longer-lasting products, better guarantees and responsible manufacturing. By offering only the most long-lived products out there, we want to empower consumers to buy less, and buy better.” As you might imagine, changing our society’s fundamental behaviour won’t be easy. Listen to this episode, to find out more on the origin and future of consumerism! I hope you enjoy the episode! This week, I'm joined by the author and entrepreneur, Tara Button, to discuss Tara's new book A Life Less Throwaway. Tara started her business, Buy Me Once, when she felt frustrated by how hard it was to find quality products that were guaranteed to last. Clearly, many others felt the same, as her website instantly attracted a huge number of hits and attention from national and international press. Realising she was on to something big, Tara quit her day job and made Buy Me Once her full time career. A Life Less Throwaway is a brilliant guide to living and shopping more mindfully. Drawing on her previous experience working in advertising, Tara unveils the tricks of the trade in how companies tempt people into buying more than they need, and lays down guidelines on how to curate a home filled with only products that reflect your values and are made to last. In our conversation, Tara explains more about how she went from spendthrift habits to appreciating the value in buying once and buying for life. She also gives helpful tips on how to give your house a thorough declutter and what you should do if you think you're bored with your domestic environment. Tara also shares her all time favourite buys, from a pen with limitless ink, to a hot pink umbrella that saves her £100s in the long-run. This is a fantastic episode for anyone needing a little spring cleaning inspiration, or who wishes to shop more carefully. Listen to learn more about Tara's story and how to live mindfully in a throwaway culture. Read the show notes and get all the links: teaandtattlepodcast.com/home/65 Get in touch! Launched currently in the USA and the UK and soon to be in Australia and Canada, Tara is a woman on a mission to spread the “buy less, buy better” love. Tara Button is Founder and CEO of BuyMeOnce.com. Born and raised in Hong Kong, Tara spent much of her time scheming with her best friend on how to save the world. She was then sent to boarding school in England at 11, and at the University in Edinburgh, she was inspired by working in the same cafés as Harry Potter's JK Rowling and discovered her passion for writing. After university, she did a masters in creative writing and then became an advertising copywriter after a brief stint in magazine publishing for the BBC. As an advertising creative, she worked with the famous cookware brand le creuset. These pots are designed to be with you for life and to be past down to your grandchildren. She found herself wishing that more things were built to last and the idea for www.buymeonce.com was born. After the Telegraph ran her story recently, Tara needed to shift gears and expand her concept to include not only the UK, but countries around the world. During this interview Tara shares her journey into the world of entrepreneurship, how she developed the concept, and some really insightful tips for budding entrepreneurs and creatives in terms of responding the the call for action, managing fear, gaining support from others, monetizing her idea, and stepping out on faith by quitting her full-time job. Check out her website at www.BuyMeOnce.com - you'll find a growing list of 'best in show' products from around the world that are built to last.
