THE Leadership Japan Series by Dale Carnegie Training Tokyo, Japan
I saw a video recently from Rampley and Co in the UK featuring Caryn Franklin, a Fashion and Identity Commentator, talking about something called “enclothed cognition”. When I saw her work title - Fashion and Identity Commentator - and the reference to psychology, I was dubious. I was thinking, “here we go, more psychobabble”. She referenced a psychology study by Hajo Adam and Adam Galinsky, published in the journal of Experimental Social Psychology in July 2012. They looked at the “diverse impact that clothes can have on the wearer by proposing that enclothed cognition involves the co-occurrence of two independent factors - the symbolic meaning of the clothes and the physical experience of wearing them”. In short, the influence of clothes depends on wearing them and their symbolic meaning. For the leader, this means to me that what I choose to wear impacts how I feel about myself and how I am perceived by those around me. For men in business in Japan, if you are a white-collar worker, that means wearing a suit. If the choice of suit and all the other accoutrements like shirts, ties, pocket squares, cufflinks, watches, shoes, etc., are important, how much thought do we normally put into it? We all know old sayings like “dress for success” and intrinsically, we get it. Wearing a suit like a slob, with food stains on the tie and down at heel, scuffed shoes, is sending a message about our own self-worth and our professional brand to the public. On the other hand, if we wear a well-cut suit, with an overall smart appearance, we feel more confident and more capable and the research bears this out. If this is the case, then should we be better educated about what we are wearing? When I moved from being a Griffith University Modern Asian Studies Ph.D. candidate to graduating and getting my first real corporate job, I had no idea what to wear. I never saw my father wear a suit to work and I didn't grow up with any concepts about men's classic clothing. Brisbane is a hot and humid climate, so generally, everyone dressed for the weather and I did too. One small blessing was that I had the self-awareness to know I was clueless. I went to see Mitchell Ogilvie, who at that time, had his men's clothing store in upper Edward Street in Brisbane and it had the dark wood panelling, leather chairs and was very swish. I explained that I was about the start work at Jones, Lang, Wootton, but had no appropriate clothing to suit the work. Mitch assured me he was dressing many of the Directors there, so he knew exactly what I needed to buy, to blend in. He did a good job (thanks Mitch) and I always felt I was one of the better dressed employees there and this helped my confidence and how I was regarded. Around that time, the Prime Minister of Australia became Paul Keating from the Labor Party. He, like me, grew up in modest circumstances and yet he managed to get the highest position in the land. I read somewhere that unlike his predecessors, he didn't wear suits made in Australia, but wore Italian suits by Ermenegildo Zegna. When I would see him on television, in the Parliament, giving speeches, he always looked very sharp and better dressed than his Tory political opponents. I decided I would wear Zegna suits too and have been a client for thirty years and their size 52 fits me like it was designed for my body. It gave me confidence, even when I was out of my depth, that at least I looked like I knew what I was doing. Had I ever planned my wardrobe with my personal brand in mind? Not really. I had just accumulated suits over the years, especially when travelling to Italy on holiday. I would wear them out and simply buy a replacement. Over the last decade, I have started to add more custom suits and have started to think more about what I am wearing and why. I wish I had done this much earlier, given the psychology of how you feel based on what you are wearing and how people regard you professionally, regarding your public brand. I often get compliments about how well I am dressed and earlier this year I started a blog on social media called “Fare Bella Figura – Master First Impressions, Be A Sharp Dressed Man”. I was highly hesitant to launch it, because I had never seen a businessman like myself, completely unrelated to the clothing business, talking about what he was wearing and why. The premise was that people make snap judgments about us, based on how we look, before we even get a chance to open our mouths, so why not do more to control that first impression? At that time, I wasn't aware of this research by Adam and Galinsky, but instinctively felt what I would choose to wear was impacting my confidence and my image with others before I had a chance to speak with them. If it makes a difference, as leaders, we need to make the most of this opportunity to increase our strength internally and externally, vis-à-vis our business rivals. It requires study and dough to do it, but if we take the long-term view, it is doable. Don't be like me and work all of this out too lethargically. Instead, work on assembling your classic men's clothing armour in Japan and wade into battle, duking it out with your competition and win!

Continuing with the theme of last week's podcast episode What Is Person-Centred Psychotherapy, this week I want to look at another psychological concept from my therapy sessions that I found absolutely fascinating. I want to talk about it because it is brilliant to look at, a lot of people “suffer” from it and there isn't always a lot of information available on emotional dependency. As well as there is nothing that links emotional dependency and locus of evaluation together, until this podcast episode anyway. Therefore, if you're interested in clinical psychology, psychotherapy and mental health then definitely keep reading. In the psychology news section, you'll learn about why people struggle to remember 2021, why "Enclothed Cognition" brushes up well, and how could we improve Back To School? LISTEN NOW! What's your favorite video game character? Why? Is it their slick ninja gear? Or their ability to shoot fire out of the palm of their hand? Or that they backflip on command? Our ability to get lost in video games is largely based on fantasy and escapism - for a fraction of time, we get to be someone else. Watch Unlock the Power of Color to Create Standout Style in Midlife Here: https://www.styleguidesociety.com/color Enclothed cognition is a term used to describe the psychological effects that clothing has on the wearer. It suggests that what we wear can have a significant impact on our self-image, emotions, and performance. This theory was developed by Adam Hajo and Adam D. Galinsky in 2012 in their study “Enclothed Cognition.” The concept of enclothed cognition states that the symbolic meaning of what we wear can affect our psychological processes, such as self-esteem and confidence. This means that when someone puts on a piece of clothing, they may feel empowered or successful due to its connotations. Furthermore, research has shown that clothes which are associated with higher social status can increase feelings of power and motivation. The concept of enclothed cognition has been used in a number of studies to examine how clothing affects performance. For example, researchers have looked at the effect that uniforms may have on students' academic performance and found that wearing a uniform had a positive influence on achievement. Similarly, another study found that wearing formal business attire had a positive effect on people's negotiation skills. These findings suggest that clothing can have a powerful psychological impact, as well as an aesthetic one. Wearing clothes which you feel comfortable and confident in can help to improve your self-esteem, performance, and overall wellbeing. So don't forget to dress for success! Not only can your clothing help you to look the part, but it can also make a difference in how you feel and perform. I use the science behind enclothe congition in my style coaching practice on various aspects as we design their life and style for their next level of success.
The power of clothing is so much more than the feeling it gives us, it has been proven to impact our cognitive behaviour and attitudes. Lauren is joined by Australian Style Institute National Trainer Claire Jensen to explore this idea, and they share the impact their wardrobe has had on their daily lives. Series 5 Episode 5 Welcome to Season Five Episode Five of Lushea Wonders Why Podcast. Season Five is fused with discussions based on ‘Attitudes and Behaviours' adding some extra food for thoughts with Collaborations outside and inside the UK. Michael Brown AKA Randy from Big Brovaz is an award winning writer and performer from the British R&B group named ‘Big Brovaz', whom is from the UK-London. Michael shares his thoughts and opinions and stories on the impacts and ways in which clothing impact his way thinking. How we dress professionally and personally can create a status and/or perception about ourselves and others. How we choose to wear our clothing can hinder, inspire or create judgements, change our thought in thinking also know as ‘Enclothed Cognition'. The underline focus links to our frame of mind ,and if we value ourselves internally or externally. Clothing can impact how we feel and it can affect our confidence, attitude or dictate power and respect. Nevertheless, the importance of not losing yourself, regarding whatever you choose to wear, keeping your integrity can provide self-validation, and allows you to be approachable. Words enhances our feelings but so can what we wear do also. Social media is fast paced, and can dominate many in what is the trend. “look good, feel great” is a psychological process that includes the choice in how we behave ( based on what we wear and how we are perceived in it). But does what we wear measure the intelligence we have as an individual or does it carry a good false pretence. Nevertheless, life is not easy and so what we choose to wear can hinder or hurt us also. Enclothed cognition is an intense topic. Our discussion is blunt but factual- Hope you enjoy! This week on Choosing Your Reflection we speak with author and brand strategist Mike Iamele. A consummate storyteller and a stickler for intention, Michael walks us through how he and his husband chose subtle details for their rings, outfits, ceremony, and reception, all of which were imbued with purpose. When a highly honored guest pointed out that perhaps only Mike and his partner would notice the subtleties, Michael is quick to reiterate another tenant of his vision: “but they'll feel it!” Join us as we hear the story of how Mike and Garrett displayed "the essence of who we are" in beautiful Aruba! Special Guest: Mike Iamele.
This week on Choosing Your Reflection we have the privilege of picking the brain of marketing guru and best-selling author Terry B. McDougall. Blazing a trail by being traditional, Terry takes us through how her ideal, classic event was far from her familial norm. As a professional at unpacking the purpose behind the presentation, Terri walks us through the meaning of a traditional wedding for her, and how it acted as a powerful statement of her strength of will and determination to write her own future with her husband. Special Guest: Terry McDougall.

Science proves it -- you should dress how you want to feel. Just as wearing a professional uniform or donning a costume can change the way you feel, your everyday clothes have that power, too. If you're starting to feel invisible, check out what you're wearing. So turn on the power of clothing (get out of those sweats and add a red lip, love) and dig into the scientific concept, "Enclothed Cognition," with us! This week on Choosing Your Reflection we talk with graphic designer and fellow podcaster, host of Design Speaks, Brandi Sea. Brandi shares how selective presentation and creativity fuel her everyday fashion choices and the outfits that defined her three wedding events. With a refreshing take on what it means to search for that special outfit and the relationships of artist and storyteller, Brandi talks about how looking “timeless” may be less important than viewing a dress as a time capsule in the evolution of one's self expression. Special Guest: Brandi Sea Heft-Kniffin.

In this solocast, I discuss the concept of “Enclothed Cognition” and how the physical experience and the symbolic meaning of wearing something can have a tremendous impact on how we Outperform (very important in our current virtual world). TOTEM Finding and Changing your identity Super Powers that allow you to move forward. Expressions of you Become Limitless This episode was designed to expose you to your inner powers, to prime you and give you information that you may not have tapped into quite yet to become limitless. We'd like to ask you this - Does your identity need to change? The average divorce rate in the US is 11-17% Professional Athletes, Law Enforcement, Military, Hospitality, Helping professionals (Nurses, doctors, therapists) the highest rate of divorce! Why? There is a specific Credo of what it means to wear that uniform. Continually flexing that mind-muscle has built that up to what is showing up always. *Symbolic Power of clothing - The clothes you wear change the way you see yourself as well as the way you think. ENCLOTHED COGNITION We are built to be flexible, to be and act in any way that allows us to perform at our best. A few Self-limiting factors Resistance - Fear, the narrative we have defined ourselves, self-limiting self talk “No one in my family has done “x”.” Language - The language that we use is extremely powerful ( Language TED talk). Different cultures have different words and Do Not have certain words like “Spend” ending in a higher level of prosperity. Blind Spot - If there is no word for it, you become blind to it - a Scotoma Language - We use language in a way to create our world. “You” are a _______ way, “You” are _______ and you start reinforcing this statement and programming it into your OS. But, there is no “YOU” or how you are always. You are a different person at work than you are at home, you are a different person ordering your coffee compared to the you while working out. You are a different you when writing out a birthday card or shopping etc. You wear different hats within each of these You have a psychological Immune System that is designed to protect you, as well as not re assure that you are stupid. It protects you Environment - The #1 most overlooked part of helping make change happen. The osmosis of it helps shift and change behaviors. Association with environments.
Perception is the only Reality others have; and their Perception is their Reality. > Strategic Image Management and Personal Branding. Our image management coaching focuses on Personal Branding and Image Excellence. Personal branding is the inner perspective one needs to know about who you are, Image Excellence is the outward reflection and embodiment thereof. Authenticity is magnetic, if we can make the connection between the highest expression of our Personal Brand and what it would look like in the world, we start to develop a unique value proposition that is underpinned by a high degree of self-awareness and confidence. To guide us on this journey we use a framework that covers important elements outlining how we can enhance our personal impact power including: - The Primacy Effect and its Criteria; - “Enclothed” Cognition Psychology; - Dress code for the work context; - The Science of colour; - Basic Body and Face shape Analysis; and - Accessories, grooming, make up, hairstyle. > What is Strategic Image Management? Strategic Image Management by its very definition suggests that you can and should manage the perceptions that others have of you. Perception is the only reality. Strategic Image Management is a composite issue forming part of a holistic approach towards the way in which you communicate. Everything about you speaks – your body language, appearance and your voice. It makes sense I suppose. I was a personal trainer for 25 years. I still produce video-based workouts that are used by hundreds of thousands all over the world. It's kind of crazy to think about that number. I have been lucky to find a publisher who knows how to produce and market great products. I have a degree in biochemistry and I am a physician. Although, my friends give me a hard time for never referring to myself as "Doctor." I guess I always found it too formal, have grown past the need for accolades and, depending on who you ask, some don't consider me a doctor at all. Given my specialty in natural medicine, I have been called everything from "quack" to "witch doctor." Believe it or not, I take that as a compliment. The choice to go into alternative medicine was conscious and deliberate. My medical specialty is in a subset of medicine called naturopathic medicine. Think of your family doctor, but instead of using drugs and surgery first, while knowing little to nothing about diet and exercise, I use drugs second and I am an expert in nutrition, exercise and supplements. My specialty is "integrative endocrinology." It's the study of hormones & metabolism. The integrative part just means that I integrate both conventional and alternative methods. Most of my career has been helping the most difficult metabolic cases lose weight. I have a license in California & Washington State and can prescribe all drugs except schedule I & II. I am not opposed to pharmaceuticals and do use them, I just prefer to lean on lifestyle change and natural approaches first. I only prescribe drugs if necessary. There is a time and a place for both. I am also a psychology geek & student of philosophy (my favorites are stoicism & taoism). I started calling myself the "meathead philosopher" after being told repeatedly, "wow, you are really deep, I love your writings, but you also look like you could kick my ass?" hahaha!! I guess it's the bald head and linebacker build? What else can i tell you? I have more life coaching certifications than I can count, I did extra shifts in couples counseling in school (I am fascinated by romance and read research on the topic regularly). I also went through an affair and a divorce. I betrayed (my wife) and was betrayed (by the person I fell in love with). It was the best and worst experience of my life. Have you ever had an experience where you were so hurt, disappointed and embarrassed by your behavior that you hit rock bottom and became a new person as a result? Yeah, that's what happened to me. This is why I write, blog and podcast so much on relationships and romance. I feel I have learned and earned this expertise. I have both the intellectual knowledge and first-hand experience of loss from both sides. I am a voracious reader of anything self development. My two favorite things are working out and reading. Some people like beers and ballgames. Those are great, but I prefer books and barbells. Finally, I am an author. In my field of medicine we have a principle called Docere. It means "doctor as teacher." That's what I spend most of my time doing now; teaching through writing. I write books, and create online educational products on metabolism, fitness & personal development. I teach in three distinct areas, "mind, muscle and metabolism." Hope that helps you understand a little about me? I would love to know more about you as well. How can I help you? Below you will find a link to get on my email list. I would love if you joined my community. The first email I send will ask you how I can help. Take a look around the site as well. In episode 171, Kestrel welcomes Anabel Maldonado, the founder of The Psychology of Fashion™, to the show. A platform that explores why we wear what we wear, and the relationships between emotions, personality and aesthetic, The Psychology of Fashion™ also examines current issues in the fashion industry through the lens of psychology. “You know, if we get away from this sort of like trends just because, buy it because all these people have it — if we think about who we are, why we like what we like, the way that fashion actually can be powerful for us, I think we’re going to buy less but buy better, and invest in things because we’re sure.” -Anabel Maldonado, Founder of The Psychology of Fashion™ On this show, Anabel shares more on her background, and how she has fused her interests to build The Psychology Of Fashion™. When she realized she wanted to build this platform and write about these topics together, she started a research project, to develop a framework to better talk about fashion through the lens of psychology. The below thoughts, ideas + organizations were brought up in this chat: “We believe that personal style is not random. The clothes that feel best tap into our truest qualities, are a consequence of our different inner needs, and reflect our most deep-seated narratives about ourselves.” “6 Reasons Why Fashion Is Losing Its Appeal” on The Psychology Of Fashion Alain de Botton, writer and philosopher who has inspired Anabel “It’s funny because it’s not just about the optical effect or making an impression on others — it’s about triggering a certain mindset in yourself.” Enclothed Cognition: how clothes affect your cognitive process, anything cerebral (thinking, feeling, anything that happens in the brain) “Self knowledge is the antidote to mindless consumption.” Big 5 Personality Test PSYKHE, a new e-commerce platform Anabel is launching, that is powered by personality science, machine learning and the psychology of fashion. Article in the Washington Post Kestrel referred to, “Kamala Harris embraced black. That was both unremarkable and theatrically powerful.”
Ania Schwartzman, PhD, The Fashionologist, helps us understand the value of using the clothing we wear as a vehicle to align ourselves with who we are at this very moment in our lives. In this episode we discuss a proven way of overcoming the self-doubt, negativity, and insecurity that hold you back and we show you how to ultimately become your best self using a unique and unlikely strategy. We look at legends from pro athletes to MLK and uncover how they used the same exact strategy to get into the zone when it counts. We discuss all this and much more with our guest Todd Herman. Todd Herman is a high-performance coach and author of, 'The Alter Ego Effect: The Power of Secret Identities to Transform Your Life'. He is the creator of the 90 Day Year a performance system which is designed to create results for business owners, fast. He has worked with Olympic athletes, Entrepreneurs, and Leaders including members of the Spanish Royal Family. He's been featured on the Today Show, The Good Life Project, Inc Magazine and more.Nature is the ultimate litmus test of whether or not an idea has credence and truthIf something doesn’t exist in nature - we need to look at it and understand itBalance does not exist in nature - but equilibrium does If you want to achieve big things, if you want to explore your capabilities, you have to throw yourself out of balance, you have to push past your comfort zone, to achieve big goalsIn order to achieve big goals, you have to give up focus on other areas of your life to do it Integration is far more important than balance - how do we actually integrate things into our lives? How do you move beyond the idea of work-life balance and move into integration? An alter-ego can be an internal trusted friend. Bring an ally inside your mind. How do you get into the zone? How do you get into flow states? An alter ego ALLOWS you to have permission to achieveHow to leverage the science of "Enclothed Cognition” to transform yourself and create a powerful alter ego that can help you achieve anything How legends like pro athletes and Martin Luther King would use physical props to tap into their alter egosThe idea that you are one single self is completely flawed. Life is about context. You are different people in different contexts. You don’t build an alter-ego for your entire life. You build specific alter egos for specific contexts and opportunities. To meet force with force does not help when dealing with difficult people. All it does is prolong the tantrum and create problems. Be like Mr. Rogers.Don’t fight against yourself, leverage the way you naturally behave and turn that to your advantage.Resistance comes from the unconscious and is extraordinarily powerful. Willpower comes from the frontal lobe. It’s like a mouse fighting an elephant. At your core, you have unlimited possibility - you have to decide and choose WHO you are and WHO is gonna show up to get the results you want. If something is getting in the way of you doing what you want to do or know you can do - THAT’S being inauthenticWhat’s the critical difference between being childish and child-like? And why does that matter?Homework: Define what “field of play” it makes the most sense for you to use an Alter Ego in. Start with - what area of life are you most frustrated with?Homework: What are the traits you most want to bring into that field of play? Is there anyone or anything that already embodies that? A fictional character? A real person? A historical figure? Is there someone that you’re really drawn to?
