What do the Mings, The Rameses', the Romanovs, the Assads and the Clintons have in common? They are all family dynasties who, for better or worse, have influenced the history of the world.Historian and writer Simon Sebag Montefiore is a formidable storyteller, and his detailed and engaging works about historical figures such as Catherine the Great, Stalin and the Romanovs have earned him readers across the globe. In his most recent book, The World – A Family History of Humanity, his focus is no less than the entire world history, told through some of the most central family dynasties.More than an ambitious and grand project, Montefiore's latest colossal publication is also an exploration and re-thinking of how we tell history. “World history often has themes, not people; biography has people, not themes,” as he writes in the book's introduction.By emphasizing the family, he is able to combine the two – the great historical events with the stories of the people in the midst of it all. He also gives more space to the role of women, and tells parts of the world's history that might not be as well known among most Norwegian and European readers, such as Sundiata Keita's kingdom in Mali, Itzcoatl and the founding of the Aztek kingdom, and Ashoka and the Mauyrya empire in ancient India.Diving into world history with Montefiore on stage is Shazia Majid, award-winning journalist and author of the book Ut av skyggene (“Out of the Shadows”), about the first generation of Pakistani migrant workers in Norway. They say current disparities in women's health across England mean there are far too many cases where women's voices are not being heard. But the decision to only speak to women up to the age of 55 has provoked a backlash. Nuala McGovern is joined by consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist Dr Shazia Malik, a sub-specialist in reproductive medicine. The film Scrapper follows 12-year-old Georgie living happily alone in a council house in London following the death of her mum. But when her absent father Jason turns up out of the blue, her world is disrupted. We talk to director Charlotte Regan about her debut feature film who says she wanted to show British working class life as something that can be joyful and fun. A new survey shows that nearly a third of female NHS surgeons have been sexually assaulted by a colleague over the past five years. Nuala speak to Tamzin Cuming, a consultant surgeon and chair of the Women in Surgery forum at the Royal College of Surgeons of England, who says it's a #MeToo moment for surgery. Before the age of social media, there was still plenty of trolling in written form. Emily Cockayne, author of the new book Penning Poison, joins Nuala to discuss her research into the history of poison pen letters; that is, messages sent anonymously, seemingly with the intention to unsettle the recipient. Emily has traced the stories of such missives to all corners of English society from 1760 to 1939. We start our new series 'The Knock' which details the stories of two women whose lives were changed when they were told that a loved one had been arrested for sexual offences against children. It's been described as one of the most seismic events of the 20th century, but how did the Partition of India affect women? The MOD is hoping to increase the proportion of women in the armed forces to 30% by 2030 but they have not met the target set for 2020. With words come power. But do you speak out or shut up? Everywhere Sara Javed goes—online or outside—everyone is shouting about something. Couldn't they all just shut up? One day she takes her own advice. At first people don't understand her silence and are politely confused at best. But the last thing Sara could anticipate is becoming the figurehead of a global movement that splits society in two. The Silent Movement sparks outrage in its opposers. Global structures start to shift. And the lives of those closest to Sara—as well as strangers inspired by her act—begin to unravel. It's time for the world to reconsider what it means to have a voice. A sharply observed novel, charged with compassion and dark wit, that will spark important conversations about how we live, relate and communicate now.

ONCE UPON A GENE - EPISODE 145 Ensuring that the Patient and Caregiver Voice are Part of Clinical Trial Design and Engagement - Bridging the Gap with Industry with Shazia Ahmad Shazia Ahmad is the Senior Director and Head of Patient and Physician Services at UBC. She earned a BS in physiology and neurobiology from the University of Maryland and has over 20 years of experience in the therapeutic development industry.  EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS Can you talk about your work designing clinical trials? I started my career at the NIH as a Research Coordinator and that's where my work in rare diseases and infectious disease started. I worked closely with patients, parents, caregivers, and care partners. At UBC I've been involved in heading up the patient services division which handles patient advocacy and stakeholder engagement. What invigorates my passion for the rare disease space is my own personal journey. I have a daughter with Kawasaki disease (KD). Because we received a diagnosis in a timely way before going into phase two of KD, we were able to get treatment for her to recover completely. It left a mark on me in my career moving forward to focus on integrating advocacy and understanding the patient journey, and the impact on the families in any program that I would support in healthcare moving forward.  Why should families seek out clinical trials? I think it's so important for families to understand the impact that their participation could make in participating in clinical trials because it's hope and a possible treatment. But most importantly, it's helping the overall patient community for that particular diagnosis, which is huge and it's critical.  What transformational changes are you seeing around designing trials and gathering a more diverse population?  As I work on clinical trials, I'm seeing more advocacy organizations partnering with the industry and making an impact early on. I'm also seeing a lot of the new technologies coming out for improving diagnosis, creating more communication, education and awareness about rare diseases in general, not just clinical trials. There's a lot of good collaboration going on within patient communities.  What are the gaps with industry right now and how do we bridge that with advocacy?  Industry is starting to do a better job in understanding the journey and bringing that into design and implementation. What often happens is they complete the clinical trial and sometimes that awareness and continuous conversation with that patient community is not ongoing. We need more community building within industry to keep those communities engaged and there are gaps there. We also need more sponsors to work together. There's so much that we could do if we really conquer some of these rare diseases together and come together as a community to create a bridge where we can learn from each other.  LINKS & RESOURCES MENTIONED Global Genes Patient Advocacy Summit https://globalgenes.org/event/rare-patient-advocacy-summit/ UBC https://ubc.com/ Shazia Ahmad - Linkedin https://www.linkedin.com/in/shaziakahmad TUNE INTO THE ONCE UPON A GENE PODCAST Spotify https://open.spotify.com/show/5Htr9lt5vXGG3ac6enxLQ7 Apple Podcasts https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/once-upon-a-gene/id1485249347 Stitcher https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/once-upon-a-gene Overcast https://overcast.fm/itunes1485249347/once-upon-a-gene CONNECT WITH EFFIE PARKS Website https://effieparks.com/ Twitter https://twitter.com/OnceUponAGene Instagram https://www.instagram.com/onceuponagene.podcast/?hl=en Built Ford Tough Facebook Group https://www.facebook.com/groups/1877643259173346/ Once Upon a Gene TV https://www.thedisordercollection.com/

Welcome back to another episode of the #MoneyMagic podcast. Today I welcome Shazia Imam to the show to have a conversation about her life journey and how she grew from desiring a typical standard life of marriage, kids, and a white picket fence to breaking through to her true self.  Shazia is the daughter of two loving Indian parents, born and raised in the U.S. but brought up with traditional Indian values.  Growing up, Shazia followed a life path by the book; she excelled in school, got into a good university, graduated as an Engineer, got married, and had a beautiful son.  Yet, after a series of unfortunate events, Shazia lost it all - her son passed on and her husband left soon after. Shazia found herself alone for the first time, feeling like an empty vessel with suicidal ideation. But flowers always grow from the ashes. During her most major life-altering events, Shazia discovered the power within herself, the power of connection, collaboration, and natural power – all geared towards femininity.  This resurgence of self gave her the inspiration she needed to come into her power and dive into the paradigm of the feminine. From this, her podcast Feminine and Fulfilled was born.  Shazia knew that she wanted to help women thrive, but she couldn't do it with a podcast alone; she needed the skill to back it up. So, she took a chance and invested US$14,000 in a leadership retreat.  Having never spent this amount of money on herself, Shazia felt guilty but determined, and now being on the other side of that, Shazia discovered that life-changing events like these go beyond price. Today Shazia is a successful life coach and podcaster; her vision to help women is laser-focused, and her relationship with the divine is unmatched!
