Hello to you, Annie Jesperson & Nathaniel Talbot listening from Deep Harvest Farm on Whidbey Island!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds (& a bit more goodness) for Wednesdays on Whidbey and your host, Diane Wyzga. Every week I head over to Deep Harvest Farm from July through Thanksgiving to fill my basket with organic produce as a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) member. Early in day the CSA members get an email with a list of what's been harvested, a recipe or two and a musing by Farmer Annie like this one, The Fallacy of Sunk Costs. Maybe like me you'll recognize yourself in her words: The Fallacy of Sunk Costs [~ by Annie Jesperson]“Sometimes a benefit and other times a detriment of long farm days are the countless hours alone with one's thoughts. A morning spent pruning tomatoes and dragging irrigation lines offers opportunity to practice deep breathing, mindfully listen to the sparrow songs or to stew on last night's sub-optimal conversation with your sister while mentally spiraling about foreign affairs. There's time for it all! We spend many moments with the gentle coo of the wind but also keep our brains stimulated with a wide assortment of podcasts. A few of us love "The Gray Area with Sean Illing," which is a philosophy show that covers culture, politics, and other big conversation topics.I'm pretty sure it was here, I learned about one of my now favorite philosophical principles that comes in handy most farm days and in the rest of life, too. It's called “The fallacy of sunk costs.” Anyone else a fan?? This concept expresses the mental error in one's tendency to keep going on an endeavor just for the sake of finishing it. You've invested some time, money, and energy so you want to complete a task even if the costs of completing it outweigh the positives. It's knowing when to cut losses and till in those overly weedy carrots, shrug your shoulders and leave the last 10% of the giant fruit tree unpruned or close the book you're not loving and pick up something else. There's nothing to gain by doing otherwise!Every day, we look at our mammoth to-do list and decide what's a priority and what just isn't going to happen and not infrequently we kiss some hard work goodbye for the sake of future plantings and more vital tasks. Prioritizing and letting go might be a farmer's most important skills as well as life talents, too, aiding us in the efficiency, time, productivity and happiness of Life!”Click HERE to visit Deep Harvest Farm, learn about the farm & its farmers, sign up for the Seed Newsletter for hot garden tips, farm news and seed discounts, join the Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) Farm Share, AND shop the 170 varieties of Certified Organic, Open-Pollinated, & Non-GMO seed proven to thrive in the Pacific Northwest: FLOWER SEEDS ~ VEGETABLE & HERB SEEDSThank you for listening! You're always welcome: "Come for the stories - Stay for the magic!" Well we are back after a bit of a break. This is a second crack at Andrew reporting on his Japan trip. Good news, this was probably better than the original anyway. If it sounds different, it's because we went old school AOT and recorded it directly into the old trusty H4N. After Andrew's Japan recap we touch on a few project car updates. If you're digging a hole in the wrong place, it doesn't matter how deep you've dug… it's still the wrong hole! This episode is all about continuing to stay on a course of action despite it being more beneficial to quit. You might try to rationalise the situation by saying since the spent cost can't be recovered, you might as well stay the course and/or allocate additional resources to try to make things work… however is that the right decision for you?? Jac & Ral both share examples of embracing sunk cost fallacy – and how to know when to hold them, how to know when to fold them and how to know when to walk away! If you've never heard of “sunk cost fallacy,” I'll take this opportunity to explain it. It's a phenomenon that happens when you've invested in something so that you're unwilling to stop pursuing that thing. Among gamblers, the idea is that if they keep betting another few bucks, eventually, they'll win. They've sunk too much into their evening of gambling to walk away without a win. Sunk cost fallacy isn't just about gambling, though. It rears its head everywhere. You'll see it in someone unwilling to sell a car they've invested a lot into because they won't recoup the value. You'll see it in managers who refuse to give up on a system that just isn't working for the company, but they keep pursuing it because they've sunk time and money into that system and feel they can't turn back now... When are determination, loyalty, persistence not virtues? When you're deploying them in a no-win situation. There are more landmines like this than you might think in your career landscape. In today's episode, you'll learn how behavioral economics is keeping you stuck in situations that are aging like milk. Know when having grit is worth the payoff and when it's wasting your time. The more time, money or effort you invest, the more you feel responsible for achieving success, and the less likely you are to abandon what's not working. When you feel like you should keep trying, also consider the cost of a missed opportunity. What didn't you do, explore, discover because you're pouring resources down the drain? What did you put at risk in terms of your stress level? Your health, your well being? Make sure that your expectations are realistic and clearly communicated Don't get so emotionally invested that you can't walk away. Think about milestones and success measures and have a plan for what happens if they aren't met. Ask "what's the best that could happen?" Then decide if that answer is good enough. As a native New Orleanian, Mitch Landrieu knows a thing or two about crisis and recovery. He served as the lieutenant governor of Louisiana through Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005 and the compounding effects of subsequent storms including Ike and Gustav. In 2010, he was sworn in as mayor of New Orleans—just one month after the Deepwater Horizon explosion undermined the region's efforts to recover from five years of depopulation and economic decline. Mayor Landrieu's experience working for the efficient restoration of New Orleans's critical infrastructure later led the Biden Administration to appoint him as an advisor on the national implementation of the 2021 Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. Otherwise known as the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL), this bill has been the largest long-term investment in U.S. infrastructure since the Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1965. It has prioritized and funded an array of essential, future-oriented projects throughout the country. The aftermath of Hurricane Katrina demonstrated how the increasing scale of environmental disasters will expose vulnerabilities in the nation's aging infrastructure. Local leaders are thus seeking strategies that balance the needs of growth and economic development with the proactive management of current and future risks. The work that Mayor Landrieu, city staff, and community partners undertook to steer New Orleans's recovery process away from bankruptcy and toward revived communities and a more secure built environment has provided a case study for policymakers and resilience groups around the world. In part one of this two-part episode, Mayor Landrieu talks with Ten Across founder Duke Reiter about the personal and professional experiences that have influenced his views on equity and resilience and shaped some of the bold positions he's taken in governing. Part two will delve further into his views and outlook on contemporary governance. We've taken a new approach with this episode, take a listen and let us know what you think by leaving a review on your preferred podcast platform. Ryan adds that great relationships mean you'll never go hungry in business.[06:17] Model, Then Modify: The Fastest Path to MasteryWhether in sales, leadership, or any skill, the key is to model what works first—then tweak it to fit your unique voice and business. Ryan shares how this philosophy applies to mastering sales scripts, marketing, and even music.[08:26] The Stoic Reminder: Be the Person You Aspire to BeBrook drops a powerful quote from Marcus Aurelius: “Waste no more time arguing what a good person should be. Be one.” Ryan and Brook discuss the noise of today's world and why action speaks louder than words.
New Orleans is an extraordinary place that has experienced more than its fair share of adversity. Living below sea level where the mouth of the Mississippi River meets the Gulf Coast, residents have become adept at mitigating a variety of water-related challenges, from the inundation of tropical storms and subsidence to the scarcity issues of saltwater intrusion. There's a lot we can learn from the people and leaders of New Orleans. The city's pride in its wealth of culture was on display to the nation recently in the pageantry of Super Bowl LIX. But the spirit of New Orleans may be most evident in the way the city has pioneered a model of urban resilience that addresses future social, economic, and environmental risks. Future-oriented action, with all its challenges, is the core focus of Ten Across and the focus of today's episode with Greater New Orleans Foundation CEO Andy Kopplin. To commemorate their 100-year anniversary, the Foundation recently hosted a “Next 100 Years Challenge,” offering a $1.2 million investment in 10 different resilience project proposals across Southern Louisiana. The community has already seen significant returns on this initial investment, offering a compelling example for local and regional support of stronger communities in a changing climate. In many ways, modern American engineering was born on the Mississippi. In the early days of westward expansion, the continent's largest river basin presented both a vital resource for transportation, biodiversity and agricultural production and a complicated barrier. The Army Corps of Engineers was founded in 1802, a year before the Louisiana Purchase. By the mid-1800s, Congress charged the Corps with improving transportation on the river to support the nation's burgeoning steamboat industry and riverine settlements. Military-trained engineers were enlisted to control the river, using brute force technology, into a predictable path to prevent flooding of communities and stabilize water levels for travel. In the new book, The Great River: The Making and Unmaking of the Mississippi, award-winning investigative journalist Boyce Upholt questions the logic of believing it possible—or ideal—to control one of the world's largest and most powerful rivers for centuries. Taking a holistic and geologic view of the landscape, Boyce describes how the Mississippi River has continually changed paths over millennia and why this is necessary to the health of the entire delta, especially in a changing climate. The book offers insight into the power and the fragility of many of the ecosystems on which we rely. Listen in as Ten Across founder Duke Reiter and Boyce Upholt discuss the intersections of the built and the natural environments, and the complexities of maintaining habitable places within essential yet hazardous geographies. Many of the U.S. Navy's shipbuilding programs are currently running over budget and behind schedule, raising serious concerns about the Navy's future operational strength and the broader capacity of U.S. industry to scale production in the event of a larger conflict. This situation is particularly troubling, given that the United States once held a dominant position in global shipbuilding. So how did the U.S. reach this position, and who is to blame? Is it the Navy, the shipbuilders, private capital, the Pentagon, or even Congress? To unpack these pressing questions, we bring in our panel of experts to analyse the root causes of this decline and explore what can be done to restore the United States' shipbuilding capabilities. On the panel this week: - John Konrad (GCaptain) - Emma Salisbury (War on the Rocks) - Matthew Funaiole (CSIS) - Thomas Shugart (CNAS) Intro - 00:00 PART I - 04:04 PART II - 33:53 PART III - 1:02:57 PART IV - 1:22:12 Outro - 1:45:42 Follow the show on @TheRedLinePod Follow Michael on @MikeHilliardAus Support the show at: https://www.patreon.com/theredlinepodcast Submit Questions and Join the Red Line Discord Server at: https://www.theredlinepodcast.com/discord For more info, please visit https://www.theredlinepodcast.com/

"I see nothing as it is now." – A Course in Miracles Workbook, Lesson 9What if our perceptions are clouded not just by the past but by assumptions and biases that prevent us from truly seeing the present? In this episode of Love & Learn, we explore Lesson 9 from A Course in Miracles Workbook, which reminds us that our minds rarely see things as they truly are. Instead, we project our past experiences and assumptions onto the present, distorting our ability to engage with reality. By practicing this lesson, we begin to release these filters and open ourselves to a clearer and more authentic perspective.Key Insights:The Challenge of Unlearning: This lesson emphasizes that confusion and resistance are natural as we begin to undo our false perceptions. Understanding isn't required at this stage—consistent practice is. Each small step helps clear away the mental clutter that obscures our ability to truly see.Perception Is Distorted by Assumptions: Our perceptions are shaped by judgments, memories, and biases, preventing us from seeing the present moment clearly. By acknowledging that we “see nothing as it is now,” we create space to recognize and release the filters that distort our view of reality. The Power of Honest Practice: The exercise for this lesson invites us to look at familiar objects and practice the mantra: “I see nothing as it is now.” This practice isn't about doubting what's in front of us but becoming aware of how our thoughts and assumptions influence what we see. Honest, non-judgmental application of this idea helps us loosen these mental projections.Overcoming the Sunk Cost FallacyThis lesson ties beautifully to the concept of the "sunk cost fallacy," which is the tendency to hold onto past investments of time, energy, or resources, even when moving forward would be more beneficial. Just as this lesson encourages us to see the present without the weight of past filters, overcoming the sunk cost fallacy invites us to release attachment to past efforts and focus on the opportunities that lie ahead.Reflection for the WeekWhere in your life are you letting past investments—of time, energy, or beliefs—hold you back from moving forward? How can you release these attachments to see your present reality more clearly and make choices that align with your true self?Remember: Our perceptions are often distorted by the past, but through honest and consistent practice, we can begin to see the world—and ourselves—with greater clarity and love.Tune in and join us as we uncover how this practice can help us create a more peaceful, present-centered life!CONNECT WITH JESSICA FLINTWebsiteInstagram

The sunk cost fallacy is a cognitive bias where individuals or businesses continue investing in a project due to past investments, despite current costs outweighing the benefits. This bias often leads to irrational decision-making, influenced by factors such as loss aversion and emotional attachment. Understanding and recognizing the sunk cost fallacy can help improve decision-making by focusing on future costs and benefits rather than irrecoverable past expenses.
