If what our culture most urgently needs is for a critical mass of us to grow into adults and then elders, how can we help our young people to step beyond the artificial boundaries of our old, rigid system into a world where they are fully connected to all parts of themselves, each other and the web of life. How, in effect, can we create an educational system that is fit for purpose in the emerging century? In this podcast, I joined with Tim Logan, host of the Future Learning Design podcast, educator, part of the team at Good Impact Labs and co-leader of the International Baccalaureate's 'Festival of Hope'.   Tim is a highly experienced school leader, management consultant, coach, educator and researcher, has held previous pedagogical and well-being senior leadership positions in a variety of international settings and is proud to have consistently helped to build innovative, outstanding schools, supportive relationships and powerful educational visions.  He says, 'The important question for now is, can we intentionally create more spaces in our schools that provide a qualitatively different kind of 'educational' experience?  Transformational shifts are happening in educational and organisational cultures around the world right now. I am incredibly fortunate to be able to play a role in this.'I was on the Future Learning Design podcast just before the dark nights of winter with Ginie Servant-Miklos, Raïsa Mirza and Will Richardson and his podcast has become one of my essential listens of the week and had been planning to invite Tim here to talk about the transformational shifts happening in education and how they can help us lay the foundations for a world we'd be proud to leave behind.  We were planning something for later in the year but we had a cancellation and he had a tech misfire and we both  needed something fast to get the schedules back on track, so here we are with a joint conversation—one of those that ranges wide over the landscape of culture and learning and the 'citadel mind' and our history of optimising for everything and how we could, instead, begin to expand into a more porous mindset and look for resonance and help young people to become part of the emerging transformation of the entire web of life.  Tim on LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/teblogan/Tim's podcast https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/future-learning-design-podcast/id1536832802Good Impact Labs https://www.goodimpactlabs.com/aboutNick Mulvey Live from COP26 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x-GBl6DeA50&t=1273sConcerned Bird Substack https://theconcernedbird.substack.com/p/elon-musks-and-xs-role-in-2024-electionFestival of Hope https://ibo.org/festival-of-hope/ Systems Transformation Pathway at UWC Atlantic College: https://www.uwcatlantic.org/learning/academic/systems-transformation-pathwayGreen School: https://www.greenschool.org/School of Humanity: https://sofhumanity.com/

The inspiration for this end-of-year impromptu gathering came from a recent flurry of ‘Collapse'-inspired exchanges in my (un)social media feeds! This was prompted largely by Ginie Servant Miklos' recently published and brilliant book, Pedagogies of Collapse: A Hopeful Education for The End of The World as We Know It (quoted in the title of the episode) and Will Richardson's equally provocative and inspiring, Confronting Education In a Time of Complexity, Chaos and Collapse. As regular listeners will know, this podcast is really focused on the need for radical and systemic change in ways that would be more loving, humanising, nourishing…, not just in education, but in all spheres of our lives. But seeing all of this Collapse chat, the question I was left with was something about the ‘how' of inviting people towards this change. It made me think of this powerful quote from Adam Curtis: "We've retreated into a sense that there's always a new apocalypse on the horizon; it's a terrible teddy bear that the bourgeois greens hug to themselves and say, “We're all going to die, it's terrible.” That's not the way you change the world. In fact, it frightens people, and when people are frightened they don't want change. It's one of the stupidest things I've ever seen. Of course, there are serious issues. And of course, they're incredibly dangerous. But fear is the last resort of those who've failed to mobilise people to transform the world for the better. I get grumpy about this because it's almost cowardly.” (https://crackmagazine.net/article/profiles/adam-curtis-nathalie-olah-interview/) So Manda Scott, Raïsa Mirza, Will Richardson, Ginie Servant-Miklos and I gathered yesterday to talk about all of this and more! This conversation invites educators to reimagine education, highlighting the critical moment of transformation we are in and the potential to create "irresistible futures" by envisioning positive, aspirational changes. Additionally, they tackle various pressing issues like misinformation, disinformation, and the imperatives of engaging students in conversations about their educational experiences. In this episode, hosts Will Richardson and Charlie Luxton dive into a pressing issue within the construction industry – pallet waste. Each year, the industry uses around 20 million pallets, yet only 10% are recovered or reused. The rest end up in landfills, contributing to significant waste and environmental damage. Joining the discussion is Paul Lewis, Founder of Pallet Loop, who is on a mission to transform how pallets are used, tracked, and reused in construction. Paul shares how his innovative approach is set to tackle this issue. Key Highlights: The Pallet Loop Initiative: Discover how Pallet Loop is pioneering the first reusable, trackable, and returnable pallet specifically for construction, potentially cutting pallet-related emissions by 40%. Paul compares the construction industry to the fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) sector, where reuse rates reach 98%. Learn about the deposit-based model inspired by Germany and Norway's bottle recycling schemes, designed to maintain the value of pallets. Explore the innovative logistics system Pallet Loop has developed, featuring Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology to efficiently recover pallets. Economic and Environmental Impact: Paul reveals shocking statistics: 6000 acres of forestry are felled annually to produce single-use pallets for construction. Hear how poor design contributes to waste and how Pallet Loop promotes standardisation from the outset to combat this issue. Understand how Pallet Loop not only reduces waste and carbon emissions but also offers a cost-effective solution for the supply chain. Paul discusses how Pallet Loop has helped suppliers like British Gypsum meet their Environmental Social and Governance (ESG) goals, addressing Scope 3 emissions without increasing cost for clients. Overcoming Industry Resistance: The discussion highlights the challenges of persuading a traditionally change-resistant industry to adopt sustainable practices, often hindered by economic pressures and procurement processes. Paul outlines his vision to overcome these barriers by extending reuse principles throughout the entire construction supply chain, with plans to expand the loop system to include other materials like cement bags and bulk packaging. This month on the Sustainability Solved Podcast, our hosts Will Richardson and Charlie Luxton delve into the world of sustainable brewing. Joining them from Berlin is Roland Pahl-Dobrick, the Beer Market Manager from Pall Filtration, to shed light on the intricacies and challenges of sustainability in brewing.Brewing Process and Impact:- Unlike wine filtration, beer filtration faces unique challenges due to its scale, volume, and sensitivity as a product.- The conversation highlights the staggering waste generated by filtration processes in the brewing industry, estimated to reach tens of millions of tonnes.- Traditional beer filtration using Diatomaceous Earth (DE), a fossilised algae, produces substantial waste, rendering it unfit for recycling or reuse, particularly problematic for large breweries.Sustainability Challenges and Progress in Brewing:- Roland discusses the industry's movement away from DE filtration toward membrane-based filtration, which significantly curbs waste production by over 90%, leading to substantial water savings and reductions in carbon footprint.- Advancements in brewing technology have notably slashed water usage by up to 80% from previous decades. Future of Sustainable Brewing:- Brewing companies are increasingly adopting robust sustainability programmes aimed at minimising waste, enhancing operational efficiency, and prioritising environmentally friendly production processes.- Consumer preferences, particular amongst the younger demographic, are driving companies to embrace eco-friendly technologies, aligning with evolving market demands.- Roland explains how attention is also being directed toward addressing the environmental impact of packaging, including efforts to lightweight materials, explore reusable packaging options, and consider more sustainable transportation methods. DESCRIPTIONIn this week's pod, we celebrate our 100th episode! I want to acknowledge the work of our amazing podcast producer, Will Richardson who keeps this going. The main topic of discussion is pivoting in the context of startups and entrepreneurship. Phuong, Incubator Partner at Interplay, provides insights into the pros and cons of pivoting and how to approach it strategically. She emphasizes that pivoting is a natural part of the early stages of a business and suggests that founders should continually evaluate and make changes to optimize their product, customer base, business model, and positioning. Phuong also offers guidance on recognizing the right time to pivot, such as when initial efforts are not yielding results or when external factors impact the business. We discuss the importance of receiving honest feedback, not settling for vague responses and emphasize the value of finding the right balance between pivoting and sticking with a failing idea.Thank you to Phoung and to our listeners for celebrating our 100th episode!Links:Follow us on Twitter: @mpd, @interplay,Podcast Links: Website, YouTube, Twitter, LinkedIn

Small to medium-sized businesses (SMEs) have a crucial role to play in sustainability, despite some thinking they are too small to make an impact. SMEs make up around 90% of businesses globally; while individual SMEs may have a smaller impact compared to larger corporations, their collective action can have a significant effect on environmental impact. In this episode, our host Will Richardson explores the question: are you ever too small to make a difference? To shed light on this topic, he is joined by two experts who assist SMEs on their sustainability journeys: Sarah Whale, Managing Director of Profit Impact, and Andy Hawkins, Chief People, Planet, and Purpose Officer at Business on Purpose. This episode of the Sustainability Solved Podcast is sponsored by Good Citizens.   Good Citizens is an eyewear brand like no other. Born to untrash the planet of single-use plastic.  Good Citizens turns a discarded single-use plastic bottle into a pair of 100% recycled frames. It took them 752 days & 2500+ failed attempts to perfect the first pair of sunglasses. Sarah emphasises that it starts with individuals and their actions, regardless of whether they belong to a big corporation or work independently. Andy illustrates this by using an analogy of playing football without a goalkeeper, where even individual contributions add up to make a significant difference. He cites historical figures like Nelson Mandela and Florence Nightingale who made a tremendous impact despite being part of a bigger system. Many business owners find it challenging to make sustainability a top priority. Sarah and Andy agree that time restraints, prioritisation, and limited resources are common challenges for SMEs. Will points out that some businesses may consider financial constraints as a reason for not prioritising sustainability, however engaging in sustainable practices can strengthen a business's financial position. Andy adds that B Corps have reported positive financial outcomes, trading at 28% above GDP. He plans to conduct research to further investigate these benefits and explore the barriers that prevent businesses from measuring and improving their social and environmental impact. (00:00 - 31:05) - The Monday morning edition of Kevin & Query opens with anticipation over the Denver Nuggets potentially closing out the championship series in five games tonight and winning their first franchise NBA Championship. Indiana State had a good run but unfortunately, they were eliminated by TCU over the weekend. It still was a solid showing and good community effort given how the situation could have played out. Kevin and Jake were on some weird text chain over the weekend. Novak Djokovic wins 23rd Grand Slam after French Open win. (31:06 - 36:06) - Morning Checkdown (36:07 - 46:01) - Preview of Colts upcoming season and review of OTA's. Kevin expresses a bit of disappointment in the lack of experience that Colts Quarterbacks Anthony Richardson and Gardner Minshew have gotten with a primary receiving core. That will change come mandatory minicamp, but will it be enough. Further breakdown of the Isaiah Rodgers situation and the other players across the NFL who were a part of the scandal.   (46:02 - 1:17:26) - Gregg Doyel of the IndyStar comes onto the show after a week off from work, and what a week it was to miss. Doyel is asked about the Rodgers situation and whether or not the Colts will let him serve his punishment or just cut him outright. Doyel believes that Rodgers won't lose his ability while he is out, but he also won't be able to catch up with the rest of the NFL and may take longer to catch up even after the suspension is over. Doyel finds out mid-call that the Rodgers report involved him gambling on Colts games. Knowing that Doyel is certain that Rodgers will be gone from the team if this proves to be true. Doyel brings up multiple times that gambling is a scary thing and its availability in the United States now could lead to situations like this becoming more common. Doyel also touches on the byline strike going on over at the IndyStar. (1:17:27 - 1:30:04) - Query opens this segment posing a question to Kevin about OTAs and how Colts new head coach Shane Steichen is splitting up offensive reps between Minshew and Richardson. Query says this is the first time the Colts franchise has ever had to truly worry about their quarterback position for more than just a season. Will Richardson be able to finally fill in that hole in the Colts offense? (1:30:05 - 1:34:26) - Quick touch and go segment where Kevin tells a story about Purdue's Zach Edey attending the high school golf tournament for a Freshman from Zionsville that he met playing Fortnite. (1:34:27 - 2:02:25) - Pat Boylan, Pacer's sideline reporter, joins the show to kick off the final hour. Kevin starts with some talk about the Indiana Fever and how they start strong but fall apart late in games. Query asks about Aliyah Boston, the Fever's first overall draft pick and how while she isn't exactly a stat leader just yet but she exhibits leadership qualities. Boylan confirms that as a player Boston has a great amount of poise and confidence for a rookie. Talk eventually turns to the Pacers and if what holding onto the 6th overall pick will do for them in the 2023 NBA Draft. Boylan believes that the Pacers are looking for a stretch four or a wing defender as their biggest need for the upcoming season and will be their primary target in the draft. Kevin gives Pat the Pacer's 5 draft picks this year and asks him what it would take to move up from 7th to 2nd or 3rd in the draft. (2:02:26 - 2:13:17) - Pop Quiz (2:13:18 - ) - Closing talk involving trips to Europe, Denver's ticket costs for the NBA finals and how many NBA fans probably thought they'd never hear the phrase "NBA Champion Denver Nuggets"See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Heading into year 2, Dan Lanning has exited the "honeymoon" phase and with how the offseason has gone, he has set expectations understandably high for 2023. The defense has to improve, but there's another area or 2 that need to be a high priority for the Ducks to hit their ceiling in 2023. On today's episode of Locked On Ducks, Spencer McLaughlin talks about the top priorities for the Ducks' head coach with Spring ball looming. One other thing for him to manage is incorporating new OC Will Stein into the team. What sorts of new things might he bring to Oregon's offense? Dana Altman's team fell short for the second straight year of making the NCAA Tournament, and the biggest culprit (not a person) has become rather clear. Will Richardson has caught the ire of many Oregon Basketball fans as his play has declined, and it's not something we've recently seen from a Duck on the basketball court. What happened? Oregon Football has seen one walk-on quarterback leave the program (AJ Abbott) while another has arrived from a team Duck fans have likely not heard since 2011. Missouri St, an FCS school, came to Autzen Stadium for a 56-7 trouncing 11 years ago and is now sending a player to the Ducks via the transfer portal. Jake Van Dyne will now serve as Oregon's fourth quarterback, a player that (if all goes according to plan) is unlikely to see meaningful action. On today's episode of Locked On Ducks, Spencer McLaughlin dives into one of his most incorrect takes regarding Oregon Basketball: the return of Will Richardson. An undisputed positive for the Ducks, Richardson's decision to come back for a fifth season is demonstratively rare nowadays in college basketball. His career represents the exact type of player that every college basketball coach (including Dana Altman) is looking for on the recruiting trail. The episode concludes with a mailbag question about NBA #ProDucks rotation player and former Oregon standout Payton Pritchard. He struggled mightily in the NBA Finals against the Warriors, but has been a productive backup point guard for the Boston Celtics through two seasons as a pro. With two years left on his rookie deal, he doesn't appear poised for a contract extension--but he DOES seem like someone who can consistently find a role on an NBA roster. Oregon Football has won the Pac-12 recruiting battle for four years in a row, with a lot of talented players both having come through and currently on the roster. The Class of 2023, though far from complete, Oregon has already landed talented verbal commitments and is still going after big-time recruits. The pursuit of a big-named quarterback recruit continues for the Ducks, and over the weekend 5-star QBs Jayden Rashada and Dante Moore showcased their talents at Overtime's 7v7 Tournament in Las Vegas. On today's episode of Locked On Ducks, Spencer McLaughlin shares his insights after doing some on-the-ground scouting of potential and future Oregon Football commits. Jurrion Dickey, an Oregon WR verbal commitment, impressed everybody over the weekend playing alongside Jayden Rashada. Spencer shares insights from speaking directly with all 3 of Moore, Rashada, and Dickey and what they had to say about Oregon. Oregon Basketball has lost a commitment in the Class of 2022, with 4-star PG Dior Johnson opening back up his recruitment. A one-time 5-star prospect, Johnson played at 10 high schools in 4 seasons, and despite his talent losing him is not a crushing blow for Oregon Basketball. Dana Altman is perfectly set with the backcourt this season and going forward, especially with Will Richardson back for one last campaign in Eugene. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Today's episode of Locked On Ducks features a very special guest--new Oregon Assistant Basketball Coach Chuck Martin. He comes over from South Carolina to fill the void left by Chris Crutchfield, who left to be the head coach at Omaha. He joins Dana Altman's staff as a coaching newcomer amongst several new faces who will join the Ducks for the 2022-23 college basketball season, alongside transfer players and talented incoming freshmen. A veteran coach in the college basketball realm, Chuck Martin has been all over the country on staffs and was one of Derrick Rose's college coaches while at Memphis. He talks about what drew him to Oregon, most notably the respect that the program has accumulated under head coach Dana Altman. Coach Martin shares why Altman is such a respected basketball mind and why he felt working under the Ducks' head coach was the best decision for his career Oregon Basketball's roster has become clear for the 2022-23 campaign, and Coach Martin is excited to have key returners like Will Richardson and Quincy Guerrier as he looks to help guide the Ducks back to the NCAA Tournament. The conversation concludes with Coach Martin discussing what it's like to be an assistant college basketball coach in 2022. From recruiting to the transfer portal, he shares phenomenal insights into the ever-evolving world of college athletics and what it's like to coach in it. Plus, his favorite part (so far) about the state of Oregon. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Built Bar Built Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. For the first time this century, Oregon Football has a head coach who comes from the defensive side of the ball. Typically, a team tends to be stronger on the side of the ball from which their head coach has a background as an assistant. This trend is very real and has to do with the overarching philosophy of how the head coach believes in winning football games--it is very reminiscent, for some of high school/middle school math class and how to solve equations. On today's episode of Locked On Ducks, Spencer McLaughlin responds to a mailbag question about forming an identity in college football. With Dan Lanning as the head coach, it's reasonable to expect that the best part of the Oregon Football program while he's the HC will be the defense. It may take time before that fully develops--it's important to remember this is Lanning's first ever job as a head football coach. Spencer has long anticipated that 4-year starter and All-Pac 12 performer Will Richardson would not return for a fifth season in Eugene. After testing the NBA waters, Richardson announced that he IS returning to Oregon for another year under Dana Altman. He has had a great career with the Ducks, and now poses the question...with transfers Keeshawn Barthelemy and Jermaine Couisnard coming over from power-5 programs, what will the starting lineup look like next year? The answer may lie in how ready 5-star center Kel'el Ware is to play right away, and how Dana Altman wants to approach the lineup. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! When Chip Kelly took over as Oregon's head football coach in 2009, his signature win came during the regular season at Autzen Stadium. On Halloween Night and a blackout Autzen Stadium, Chip Kelly's Ducks demoralized Pete Carroll's USC Trojans 47-20 and brought themselves onto the national stage in College Football. Now, after USC hit rock bottom in 2021 going 4-8, those two programs could once again be poised for nationally televised showdowns. Yesterday's episode featured a discussion of the pros and cons for Oregon Football should USC return to prominence under HC Lincoln Riley. On today's episode of Locked On Ducks, Spencer McLaughlin goes back in time to look at some of the biggest wins Oregon has attained over USC on the gridiron. Most notable in 2009 on Halloween Night, there have been some big-time showdowns between the (now) 2 biggest brands on the west coast in college football. Spencer's favorite moment of the Chip Kelly era, in fact, came in the LA Coliseum in the 2010 regular season--among many memorable performances in Oregon-USC football games. Will Richardson has still not formally announced his plans for the 2022-23 college basketball season, but other Ducks have for Dana Altman. Quincy Guerrier, after testing the NBA Draft waters, will indeed be back for Oregon next season. He avoids making the mistakes of past Duck basketball players who left for the pro ranks before they had maximized their potential in college to succeed in the pros. Dana Altman teams have a tendency to performance at their best once the calendar hits February and March. Will Richardson's career at Oregon has looked a lot like a Ducks late season surge, as his scoring has improved every year since his freshman year. Having won his high schools first ever state title, Richardson is now looking to help the Ducks make another deep run in March as he also looks to see what his basketball future holds after leaving Eugene.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
