Everyday Stories That Skyrocket Business, With Dumi Mabhena

For many people, actually doing a podcast is a lot harder than it seems. A few months ago, Riverside.fm, a major podcast platform, published an article that said, "90% of podcasts don't get past episode 3," and "of the few that continue, another 90% will quit after 20 episodes." Here at Copywriters Podcast, we understand this, but to be honest, we just haven't done a lot ourselves to solve this particular problem. Not our jam. Our special guest today, Dumi Mabhena, has done a LOT to help podcasters at all levels of skill and experience. His own podcast is called Zimbawean Voices, and he's based in Washington, DC. Dumi knows, as Nathan and I do, that the effective use of personal stories is key to making a podcast work. And today he's going to talk about the enormous impact of everyday stories have on sales. He has founded businesses in multiple niches, including solar energy and student housing. Dumi is also the author of a children's book, Tuku's Dream. As for his work supporting other podcasters, Dumi and his business partner really tie the two things together pretty neatly in the headline on his website: We simplify editing so you can focus on Storytelling. So let's focus on the storytelling part first. Because while a lot of people want to start a podcast, EVERYBODY needs to tell better stories, and Dumi has some amazing and extremely practical insights about how you can use ordinary personal stories to have a massive positive impact on your sales. Why? One of several reasons is the tremendous connection they create between you and your listeners. In today's show, Dumi reveals five types of simple, authentic and surprisingly effectives stories that do not sell, but still build connection and trust with your prospects and can help you boost sales by a lot! In this episode of The Feminist Bar, host Tinatswe Mhaka is joined by Dumi Gatsha for a powerful conversation on what solidarity really means in the midst of increasing political violence, burnout, and donor fatigue. Together, they explore how movements can resist division and co-optation while navigating scarcity, repression, and the emotional toll of doing this work. Dumi brings lived experience and political insight to a timely conversation on the contradictions of being praised but unsupported, the ways funding politics shape access and visibility, and how competition can fracture movements meant to thrive through collaboration. What does it take to build lasting solidarity under fire? What happens when survival requires performance? And can movements still resist without losing their edge? This episode holds space for hard truths about activism, while also imagining funding and solidarity models that are honest, inclusive, and sustainable. The stylist and fashion editor reveals to BoF founder and editor-in-chief Imran Amed why she resigned from Vogue and how she is channelling her influence and energy to support that next generation of fashion talent. Background:In the dynamic world of fashion magazines, Gabriella Karefa-Johnson stands out. Karefa-Johnson has always stood out, growing up as a self-described loud, weird, driven kid. Karefa-Johnson's first Vogue cover was Paloma Elsesser for the January 2021 issue of Vogue, photographed by Annie Leibovitz. Later that year, she worked on the cover shoot featuring US Vice President Kamala Harris. But recently, Karefa-Johnson decided to leave Vogue. “The truth of the matter is we grow and sometimes our containers don't grow with us. And so I am excited to build a new container for all of these ideas and this energy,” Karefa-Johnson says. This week on The BoF Podcast, Karefa-Johnson joins BoF founder and editor-in-chief Imran Amed to discuss her professional journey, how she harnesses her creative energy in a high-pressure industry and why she is laying the foundation for the next generation of fashion creatives. Key Insights: On excelling in the demanding, hyper-creative world of fashion media, Karefa-Johnson avoids burnout by focusing on her inner self. “Staying true to who you are and… really maintaining the purity of that creative exchange is something that keeps me grounded,” she says.Looking back at some of her most challenging assignments, Karefa-Johnson recalls the 2021 cover shoot during the Covid-19 pandemic with US Vice President Kamala Harris. “It's very hard to communicate with your subject, which is super crucial in executing an image. You need to have a relationship and a rapport and there needs to be mutual trust,” she explains. “But it's hard to establish that between 15 masks, because it was during Covid, 14 secret service agents, a press secretary and a chief of staff.” Reflecting on her decision to leave Vogue, Karefa-Johnson is excited about what lies ahead. “I just hope that whatever comes to be of this career of mine is something that models possibilities for the next Gabriella Karefa-Johnson,” she explains. “I can't wait to take those tools and apply them in ways that are really just true to who I am, serve me and serve people who look like me.”Karefa-Johnson is passionate about nurturing emerging talent and has used her network to support the development of Central Saint Martins graduate Torishéju Dumi. “It's very easy to feel invisible in these cities as a young designer, period. Full stop. But as a young black female designer, I knew that the hurdles she was up against would be exponentially bigger than some of her colleagues,” Karefa-Johnson says. “I wanted to be able to bridge the gap. I wanted to be able to give her a leg up, which I think in a lot of ways is something that has produced so many of the most enduring young designers.”Additional Resources:Poet Laureate Amanda Gorman Appears on Cover of American Vogue | BoF Ye Lashes Out at LVMH and Vogue Editor After ‘White Lives Matter' T-Shirt Draws Criticism Hosted on Acast. Today we're heading down to the white continent of Antarctica. This vast land holds an extremely special place in my heart and this was my second trip to the continent. This time I visited by flying over from South Africa and staying at one of White Desert's beautiful camps called Echo Camp.  I took along my recording equipment and am so glad I did because I think you'll find the stories that follow quite inspirational. While my day to day was focused on mountaineering activities, what was most special about the trip was meeting the team and learning about the incredible amount of logistics that go into the camp and transporting scientists and dignitaries to and from Antarctica.  There's something about being secluded with humans from around the world, in place that waves no flag. My guests today - Neil, Stuart, James, Sean, and Dumi share how months on end in Antarctica have inspired and changed them and tell stories of some incredible things they've experienced  I hope you enjoy this special episode of Luxury Travel Insider.   Learn more at www.luxtravelinsider.com   Connect with me on Social: Instagram LinkedIn

Dumi Oburota is the founder of Disturbing London, which although operates primarily as a record label, also has arms in brand consultancy, artist management, event management, music publishing and a fashion label. Dumi joins Steven for a second round conversation about the value of communication, the intersection between art, music and fashion, and how his business of culture has changed across the last few years. KEY TAKEAWAYS When we lose time, it makes us appreciate more fully the world around us and the people who mean the most to us. If you communicate on a comprehensive scale with the world at large, instead of sticking to what and who you know, then you increase your reach and profoundly impact the success you'll have. Boxers are like warriors, and their art is based on respect and skill. It's a pursuit that is gradually gaining more and more admiration from all corners of society due to the discipline involved. You have to follow your gut instincts when it comes to finding talent. Use your intelligence, sense of purpose and swagger, and see how it aligns with the same qualities in someone else. This is how you spot the stars of tomorrow. BEST MOMENTS 'Street art is like the intersection of art and music and fashion' 'You have to be bilingual in life' 'I've always been able to keep artists authentically true' 'I like discovering people and being part of people's journeys' VALUABLE RESOURCES The Steven Sulley Study         Dumi Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/dumioburota/ ABOUT THE HOST The Steven Sulley Study is my take on success. My view is you should have multiple focuses to be a well-rounded individual. Success shouldn't be just one thing like money, for example, it should also consist of a healthy fit lifestyle and thriving relationships. As a person who has made a success in life and also made huge cock-ups I feel I can offer suggestions and tips on how to become successful or at least start your pursuit. My 'Study' has taken resources from reading and education plus being around, my perception, of successful people and I, know a lot of successful people from all walks of life. My 'Study' coming from my experiences in business, investing, sales (my core background), training, boxing and education has enabled me to become well rounded and successful and I will help you in these key areas too.
