The era of women in space began in 1963 when Soviet cosmonaut Valentina V. Tereshkova became the first woman to orbit Earth.
60 years ago today, the Soviet Union astonished the world: RADIO MOSCOW: This is Radio Moscow. For the first time in history, a woman has gone up into outer space. A Soviet citizen, Tereshkova. Valentina Tereshkova was a 26-year-old textile worker. She was picked by Soviet Premier Nikita Khruschev, who was a master of space propaganda. It was the height of the Cold War, and space travel was a powerful symbol of national power. Every space flight was held up as an indicator of a superior way of life. Only a few astronauts and cosmonauts had left Earth by then — all of them men. Sending a woman into orbit was designed to show that the Soviet space program was more advanced than the American one. Khruschev himself selected Tereshkova to fly solo aboard the Vostok 6 capsule. Another cosmonaut was already in orbit, aboard Vostok 5. The two craft briefly passed within three miles of each other. That was trumpeted as a major accomplishment as well. Tereshkova spent three days in space, during which she talked to Khruschev by radio. After returning to Earth, she was awarded the Order of Lenin and became a goodwill ambassador. Tereshkova later was elected to the Russian parliament. But she never flew in space again. Neither did any other woman for almost 20 years. Today, more than 70 women have entered orbit. And female astronauts are training for trips to the Moon — extending the path laid by Valentina Tereshkova. Script by Damond Benningfield Support McDonald Observatory
In 1978, NASA changed the rules around who could be selected as an astronaut. Civilian engineers, doctors and scientists could be selected to fly on the then brand new space shuttle. Meredith Bagby joins us to talk about this group, whose social backgrounds were as diverse as their professions. For the first time, the group included women and people of colour. There were triumphs with astronauts like Sally Ride and Greg Bluford, and tragedy when four of this talented group were lost in the Challenger disaster. This is a compelling insight from Meredith, who had access to five astronauts from this historic class.Find Meredith Bagby's book The New Guys here You can request a topic for the show! In June of 1963, the Soviet Union performed an encore of the Vostok 3 and 4 missions with two manned spaceships orbiting the Earth simultaneously. However, Vostok 5 and 6 was more than a simple repetition. Vostok 5’s objective was to beat the flight-duration record. But Vostok-6 would carrying the first woman into space. The 26 year old Valentina Tereshkova….
Vostok 5’s orbit turned out to be lower than the expected 181 by 235 km. The actual orbit was 175 by 222 km. Initial calculations indicated the orbit of Vostok 5 would not decay for 10 or 11 days, however more conservative estimates, taking into account the increased solar activity and the resulting expanding of the upper atmosphere showed that the orbit could decay after only 8 days. With no way of predicting where Vostok 5 might land, the planned eight-day mission was now in question…
During re-entry plasma enveloped Vostok-6. Tereshkova saw pieces of burning material fly past her window and she also smelled smoke entering the cabin…

The surgery makes Tereshkova into a tank. In the war, she never showed any fear, not at Fulda, not even in the snows of Vogelsberg when the Americans dropped the first bomb. When Clinton and Yeltsin shook hands at Yalta, when the word came down to the 8th Guards Army to yield Frankfurt and withdraw to Soviet soil, Tereshkova spat into the dirt and said: “Too bad." | Copyright 2014 by Seth Dickinson.
