To celebrate Space Exploration Day, here is a special episode of The Accutron Show that features a conversation between two young and brilliant women that are building careers in aviation and space travel, Accutron ambassador Zara Rutherford and Alyssa Carson. Zara Rutherford s a Belgian-British aviator who, at age 19, became the youngest female pilot to fly solo around the world and the first person to complete a circumnavigation in a microlight aircraft after a five-month journey. Alyssa Carson is an American student with the goal of training to become an astronaut and to be selected for future human spaceflight to Mars. She attended U.S. Space Camp in 2008 and has also attended other space camps in Canada and Turkey. In 2013, NASA invited Alyssa to be on the MER 10 panel in Washington DC to discuss future missions to Mars live on NASA TV. Join the conversation between these two young women and dream big and fly high.EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS2:16 Alyssa: Since I was a kid, I was obsessed with the idea of going to space. No one in my family had a science or space background. So when I was 7, I went to space camp in Huntsville, Alabama - that was my version of Disneyworld. Everything I wanted to know as a kid was right there. Then watching a show on Nickelodeon, that's the first time I heard the word "Mars". 20:44 Zara: My trip around the world lasted 5 months. That's also because I was stuck in Alaska for a month, in the middle of winter, waiting for the weather to improve. The temperature dropped down to -30 degrees celsius; I was really worried since the plane had not been tested under those conditions. 30:31 Alyssa: I love meeting young kids, I love opening their eyes to the possibility of becoming an astronaut. Kids are used to hearing about becoming doctors, lawyers, etc. and not so much about joining a space program.

Three phenomenal women in space share their stories with us this weekend, in honour of Asteroid Day — a UN-recognised initiative raising awareness about the potential impacts, and opportunities, of these marvels of astronomy. Asteroid Day takes place on 30 June, the anniversary of the Tunguska event in 1908 where a meteor destroyed a landmass of about 2,150 km2 (a little smaller than the landmass of Luxembourg) of forest in Siberia, Russia. Asteroid Day was co-founded in 2014 by physicist Stephen Hawking, B612 Foundation president Danica Remy, astronaut Rusty Schweickart, film-maker Grigorij Richters and astrophysicist (and Queen guitarist) Brian May. Now recognised by the UN, Asteroid Day is celebrated globally to raise awareness about asteroids and their potential impact on Earth. It also raises awareness of the potential to mine asteroids as we move towards a space economy. My guests this week are: - Julie Payette - a Canadian engineer, scientist and astronaut who also served as Governor General of Canada from 2017 to 2021 - Wanda Díaz-Merced - astronomer using using sonification - Hoor Abdelraman Al Maazmi - space science researcher at the UAE Space Agency - Maher Kalaji - Board Director of the Asteroid Foundation and founder of the newly to be announced Luxembourg Rocket Society. Julie Payette joined the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) in 1992 as a member of the Canadian Astronaut Corps. She completed two spaceflights, logging more than 25 days in space. Dr. Payette also served as capsule communicator (CapCom) at NASA Mission Control Center in Houston and from 2000 to 2007 as CSA's chief astronaut. Julie was named COO for the Montreal Science Centre in July 2013. In 2017, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that Queen Elizabeth II had approved the appointment of Payette as the next governor general of Canada which she started that October until January 2021. Wanda Díaz-Merced was born in Puerto Rico and lost her eyesight gradually through her teenage years into early adulthood. She talks about this experience and her long journey to become an astronomer who uses sonification to turn large data sets into audible sound. Currently, Wanda works at the European Gravitational Observatory Cascina, Italy, where she is the Director of the Arecibo Observatory. Dr Díaz-Merced received an internship with Robert Candey, an incredible mentor to her, at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland, USA, and went on to complete a Ph.D. in computer science at the University of Glasgow. Wanda was then accepted as a post-doctoral fellow at the Center for Astrophysics | Harvard & Smithsonian, and South African Astronomical Observatory in Cape Town. Wanda's work has also included collaborations with the European Gravitational Observatory proposal REINFORCE and the National Astronomical Observatory Japan (NAOJ).  Dr Díaz-Merced creates sonification software to perceive space in a different sensory way. Hoor Abdelraman AlMaazmi is a space science researcher at the UAE Space Agency and a member of the Emirates Mars Mission science team since 2017. The Mars mission, named ‘Amal' or ‘Hope,' launched in 2020. The UAE is going to send a spaceship to explore the solar system's main asteroid belt due to launch in 2028. For this mission, they will look at six asteroids with the target to land on the seventh- Justitia. This asteroid is thought to be one of only two known red asteroids and potentially laden with organic substances. The aim for this MBR Explorer is to deploy a landing craft to study the surface of Justitia fully developed by private UAE start-up companies. https://asteroidfoundation.org/ https://royalsociety.org/about-us/who-we-are/diversity-inclusion/case-studies/scientists-with-disabilities/wanda-diaz-merced/ https://space.gov.ae/en/initiatives-and-projects/uae-mission-to-asteroid-belt-ema https://www.instagram.com/uaespaceagency?igsh=ZXgwcnR3dTNqOHFs https://x.com/uaespaceagency?s=21

In this episode of the Celestial Citizen podcast, host Britt Duffy Adkins introduces a special project that the Celestial Citizen team has been working on to draw attention to gender discrimination and sexual harassment in the space industry.  The project, titled "Take Up Space," includes a short film and a four-part companion podcast series that features the firsthand accounts of anonymous women and non-binary individuals working in the space industry. In this first episode, titled "Not Technical Enough" we share stories that focus on the many ways in which women are discouraged from working in STEM and technical fields in both subtle and overt ways. The current climate for women in STEM and women in space is described as "very cloudy" by one of the participants.  And although progress has been made, there is still a long way to go to make the space industry more inclusive.  Women are often made to feel uncomfortable if they have opinions or ideas, and the industry is still by and large dominated by men.  Globally, women make up only 11% of astronauts, 20-22% of space industry workers, and 30% of researchers, scientists, and engineers.Despite the challenges, there are efforts to address these issues and bring about change.  But perhaps change is not coming fast enough, and there is a risk of losing talented individuals who want to work in the industry if things don't improve.  One speaker points out that recent triumphs, such as Wally Funk's trip to space, are few and far between.  Many women have had to abandon their dreams due to lack of opportunities, discrimination, mistreatment, and other societal pressures. The speakers share their personal experiences with doubt, questioning their place in the industry, and feeling invisible or not taken seriously.  One woman, in particular, recounts her experience with harassment in her first job in the field, which was extremely demoralizing and made her question whether it was worth staying in the industry.Despite the challenges, the speakers remain determined to pursue their passions and make a difference.  The podcast provides a powerful look at the experiences of gender minorities in the space industry and highlights the need for greater inclusivity and diversity in the field. Our short film, "Take Up Space," can be found on the Celestial Citizen YouTube channel.Support the showSubscribe to our newsletter and follow us on social media!Instagram: @thecelestialcitizenTwitter: @celestialcitznLinkedIn: Celestial CitizenYouTube: @thecelestialcitizen

Monday marked 100 years since the BBC began broadcasting on radio. To celebrate that centenary, we commissioned a poem by Kim Moore and created a soundscape to show how much women's lives, and the noises that surround them, have changed - using BBC archive from the 1920s right through to the present day. Why did the BBC get its nickname ‘Auntie'? And what kind of aunt would she be? We discuss with television presenter and comedian Mel Giedroyc and historian of the BBC, Professor Jean Seaton. ‘The Secret World of Incels' is a Channel 4 documentary that gives a window into the lives of Incels and explores what makes them engage with these misogynist online forums that have led to some horrific acts of violence. We discuss with its presenter Ben Zand and Dr Kaitlyn Regehr. The Internet Watch Foundation has been tracking the increasing trend of perpetrators grooming children online and coercing them into sexually abusing themselves on camera. The foundation has recognised a lot of what they are seeing as Category A, the most severe kind of sexual abuse, due to it including penetration with an object. A snapshot study out yesterday looks into the objects being used, and how they are everyday domestic items that can be found in the household. We hear from Susie Hargreaves, CEO of the IWF, and Vicki Green, CEO of the Marie Collins Foundation. The story contains content that some listeners may find distressing. What does the Artemis moon mission mean for women? We speak to Llbby Jackson from the UK Space Agency. The Big Swing is the world's first double female-fronted big band. It is led by jazz musicians Georgina Jackson and Emma Smith who aim to elevate female visibility in the big band world. They join us in the studio for a special performance.

Valentina Tereshkova, who made history as the first woman in space, once said, “A bird cannot fly with one wing only. Human space flight cannot develop any further without the active participation of women.” Since Tereshkova became the first woman in space in 1963, women have gone on to set many records for spacewalks and long-duration spaceflight on the International Space Station. Another milestone will come in 2024 when NASA aims to land the first woman on the moon under the Artemis program, named for the twin sister of Apollo. Women not only play a role in space exploration by being astronauts, they also work behind the scenes to make the journeys possible.Hidden Figure mathematician Katherine Johnson of the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) was instrumental in getting astronauts into orbit safely and helped put humans on the Moon. So, in today's conversation we will give space to amazing and pioneering women who are making space exploration possible and creating technology on Earth shaped by what scientists have found beyond our planet.

How your downtown / CBD will change forever.  Spiders are pretty smart...space is very treacherous....why spiders function better in space than female astronauts or physicists.  Jewish businessman/philanthropist/pioneer/Billionaire Frank Lowy spent almost 80 years searching for his father after he disappeared in the Nazi occupation of Hungary.  His search in late life and battle to save his ailing wife shows money can't buy everything, and the beauty and terror are chronicled in a wondrous documentary.  Speaking of loss...when you're hiking in the Grampians in Victoria, it's important to read the signs on the guardrails.  God can be very unforgiving at times.  WYPIW is back and my shoes are going to the America's Cup once again.  Now that Hanukkah (Channukah) has concluded,  I preview next week's mega Christmas Special Podcast with a wonderful Tony Bonner interview, as he talks about beating the devils and always going towards the light. #jeffjacoby #nadialeeCohen #paulaCushing #UniversityofBasel #scienceDaily #scienceBitches #USAelections #UnitedStatesCongress #UigherMuslims #ChinaSlavery #spiders #FrankLowy #westfield #tonyBonner #Christmas #hanukkah #CatherineWheel #AlexanderMcqueen #Prada #AmericasCup
