“Becoming other people” for a living, as Kerry Washington likes to describe her craft, turns out to be a revelatory lens on the high drama that is the human condition. As a “learning actor,” a kind of actor/anthropologist, she has brought elegance and moral rigor to all kinds of roles: as the uber-glamorous, tough-as-nails Olivia Pope on Scandal; as the wife of Idi Amin and the wife of Ray Charles; from Little Fires Everywhere to Django Unchained. Just after Scandal ended seven triumphant seasons, she starred on Broadway as Kendra, a jeans-clad mother in a Miami police station waiting to hear what has happened to her beloved son. Krista was in that audience, and saw how Kerry attended not just to her role on stage but to bringing a beautifully racially mixed audience to participating and reflecting together. So this conversation has been a while in coming. It is rich with grace and surprising angles of insight — on the roles we all learn to play in the stories of the lives that we are given, and the evolution that is possible in how we assume those characters and leave them behind and grow them up. This episode of On Being was produced with consideration of the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike and with external legal guidance. In distributing this episode, we attest to our belief that no statements made involve promotion of struck work in violation of the SAG-AFTRA Strike Order.Kerry Washington is the author of a new memoir, Thicker Than Water, and founder of the production company Simpson Street. Her many credits include the television series Little Fires Everywhere, the Broadway play — and Netflix film — American Son, and the film Django Unchained. She starred as Olivia Pope on seven seasons of the hit TV series Scandal. Hello from the vault! In the first of a series of episodes commemorating TTSG's third anniversary, OG Andy Liu returns.
Hello from the start of AANHPIXYZ Heritage Month! It's just Jay and Tammy this week, going long on two of our favorite topics: U.S.-Korea relations and progressive media. [3:15] First, we address the carefully crafted viral moment from Korean President Yoon's debut at the White House, and the sanitizing of human rights realities in Asia. [17:30] Next, we discuss the controversy over an article about Tucker Carlson published by the American Prospect—and mea culpa'd by the top editor following online criticism. We touch on [28:10] virtue-signaling disclaimers and [38:55] the tiptoeing endemic to our fractured news industry. In this episode, we ask: Why did a misogynistic, anti-labor president get such a glowing White House welcome? Do we agree with the central argument of the Prospect article: that there is some value to Tucker Carlson types' espousing of “populist” views on Fox News? Is Jay less cancellable because he's not white? Duluth officials said they are proud of the city's newest public art, a mural called “Meet Me on Main” that is painted on the back window of the Nacho Daddy building, which is located on Main St. The officials say it allows people to step back in time to the old Duluth. Brenda Ehly is the artist behind the piece. She said she was inspired from a phrase on the city's seal that she saw when she first moved to Duluth. Ehly is no stranger to the Duluth art scene. Her notable pieces in downtown Duluth include: ♦ Dream Big mural at Hill Street & West Lawrenceville ♦ Painted bike rack at Hill Street & West Lawrenceville ♦ Two paintings displayed in Maple Street Biscuit Company♦ ♦ Interior & exterior signage at both Crave Pie & Harper Row ♦ Backdrop for the model train set at the Southeastern Railway Museum ♦ Pen & ink depiction of City Hall located inside City Hall as part of our permanent art collection Gwinnett County commissioners agreed to partner with the Georgia Department of Transportation on one proposed new interchange on an interstate in the county and to team up with the city of Buford on a draft report for another proposed interchange on a different interstate. One of the interchanges is the long-discussed proposed McGinnis Ferry Road interchange on Interstate 85 in Suwanee. The other is a proposed interchange on Interstate 985 at Thompson Mill Road in Buford. The partnership with Georgia DOT pertains to right-of-way acquisition for the McGinnis Ferry Road interchange on I-85. The interchange has been in the planning stages for years and advertisements calling for construction bids for the project are expected to be posted this year. The other project, with Buford, is further off, however. In fact, it only recently go the OK from federal officials to even be considered. Under the agreement, the county and Buford will jointly fund the creation of a draft project concept report on a proposed new interchange on I-985 at Thompson Mill Road. Each side will pay $500,000 for the study, with the county using 2017 special purpose local option sales tax funds for is portion of the cost. “Producing ‘American Son' is part of a season of site specific shows about moving forward in the face of adversity,” Live Arts Theatre's Co-Artistic Director Becca Parker said. If the name “American Son” is familiar, it was a 2019 movie directed by Kenny Leon and written by Christopher Demos-Brown. The movie was based on Demos-Brown's play of the same name. American Son' touches many avenues of life such as interracial relationships, being the product of an interracial relationship, and different levels of profiling by those in power as well as the public. The story centers around a bi-racial couple who must confront their feelings about race and bias after their son is detained by the local police following a traffic stop incident. Because of the language which is described as “severe adult,” other adult topics and moderate violence, the play is recommended for audiences ages 16 and up. The audience is also cautioned that the production contains racially charged language and an audio depiction of a shooting. Leading the production are Le Titia Sloan as Kendra Ellis-Conner, the mother of the “American Son.” R. Chandler Bragg portrays Scott Conner, the father who is estranged from Kendra. The cast is completed by Santiago Vargas as Officer Paul Larkin and Live Arts Theatre Pro Company member D. Norris as Lieutenant Stokes. The production opens today and runs through Sunday. Friday and Saturday evening performances are at 7:30 p.m. The Sunday show begins at 2:30 p.m. Tickets start at $15. The U.S. Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Service Southeast Region announced Tuesday that Georgia and Tennessee are two of 14 states that have been selected to participate in the expansion of a demonstration project to evaluate the impact of using Medicaid eligibility data to directly certify students from low-income households to receive free and reduced-price school meals. Historically, most students who receive these meals have been certified based on information they submit in an application. Officials say adding Medicaid to the list of benefit programs that can “directly certify” a student to receive free or reduced-price meals is a win-win for students, families, and school officials. This means less paperwork for families and fewer school meal applications for school districts to process and verify. The remaining 12 states selected to participate in this round of the project are Arizona, Colorado, Delaware, Montana, New Mexico, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Vermont and Wyoming. The newest round of this demonstration creates an important opportunity to further test the impact of Medicaid Direct Certification, which was first initiated through the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010. The Biden Administration is committed to expanding direct certification opportunities and certifying more eligible children for free and reduced-price meals without an application. Welp! Hell of a time to do our America Rah-Rah movie month. Look, this week we're doing Born on the Fourth of July: the Oliver Stone film starring Tom Cruise, based on the real story of Vietnam Vet and Peace Activist Ron Kevin. We're also talking... well... you know...Born on the Fourth of July was directed by Oliver Stone. Screenplay was written by Ron Kevin, based on his autobiography of the same name. It tells the story of a young American in the 1960s who enlists in the Marines to fight the North Vietnamese Army. He saw it as his solemn duty to his beloved America. And then a bullet put him in a wheelchair, and his journey from jingoist American Son to Peace Activist (same thing if you ask us) had begun. It's a masterpiece and a very important film for times like these.Question of the week is: This land Support the show

For this Throwback Thursday, just after Father's Day, I knew I wanted to bring you this episode with my friend, an incredible father and podcaster at the While Black Podcast, Darius Hicks. This past week in the United States, in addition to Father's Day, we also acknowledged Juneteenth (short for “June Nineteenth”) an annual commemoration of the effective end of slavery in the United States after the Civil War. It came when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas in 1865 to ensure all those enslaved were freed, a full two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. It's considered the longest-running African American holiday and last year in 2021 became a federal holiday. For those of us who are not Black, Juneteenth is an opportunity to learn more about the history of slavery, to reflect on how much more is needed for Black people to be truly free in this country, and to recommit to antiracism. Just over a month since a white gunman killed 10 Black people at a supermarket in Buffalo, one of the deadliest racist massacres in recent U.S. history, this conversation with Darius is a necessary call to action to learn more and identify how we can be part of the change that is needed. Darius gifted us with exceptional insight, perspective, and vulnerability in this conversation. I'm honored to share it with you again. So join us in this episode as we celebrate amazing fathers all over the world! About Darius: Darius has always displayed an entrepreneurial and activist spirit. Since his youth, he has dedicated his time to those around him in hopes of bettering them while he better himself. It began by volunteering as a camp counselor from middle school through high school, and grew via mentorship and tutoring in college all the way to his membership role in the 100 Black Men and as an advocate for African Americans through his work on the While Black Podcast. Vince wholeheartedly believes James Baldwin's quote “To be Negro in this country and to be relatively conscious is to be a rage almost all the time”. However, he chooses to channel that rage into a place that allows him to change the narrative on black folks while he helps to empower those same black folks. Earning his undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering from Southern University A&M in Baton Rouge LA (1999) and his MBA from Queens University in Charlotte NC (2005), Vince has gained valuable experience in multiple industries. He has excelled in multiple industries and enjoyed a career spanning 20+ years with opportunities in Engineering, Consumer packaged goods, Corporate retail giants, and now the Social/tech industry. In addition, he is a successful entrepreneur and founder of Aveo Big and Tall Golf Apparel which rose to become the #1 big and tall golf apparel offering in Golfsmith stores and was distributed nationally and internationally via various outlets including but not limited to Dicks Sporting Good, GolfSmith, and Golf Galaxy. He has since sold the rights to the Aveo name and divested from the company. However, he has altered his focus by aligning his passions with his promise and ensuring his time is invested accordingly as he focuses on improving the black world and the global community through and with black people. His latest endeavor is laser-focused on impacting and improving the people around him. Specifically, he is the creator and co-host of the While Black Podcast a podcast focused on empowering, educating, and inspiring African Americans to go and grow. While Black tells stories by, from, and for African Americans and pairs those stories with expert and credible guests who can communicate wisdom and success strategies helping us to achieve, accomplish, and overcome. Connect with Darius: • Facebook: @whileblackpodcast • Instagram: @while_black • Twitter: @Whileblackpc Topics Discussed in this Episode: • The universal language and common connection among mothers of all races and how Darius and I both believe mothers will be critical to making change • Darius' quest to be authentically who he is as a 6'4, 300-pound dark-skinned Black man. How he has struggled to stand tall and shine while also consciously shrinking because people's first reaction to him is fear • The question about fatherhood Darius asks himself all the time…” How do I raise fearless children when I am a fearful parent?” • A heartbreaking but powerful “epic snapshot moment” with his son made Darius realize his words were getting through to him and that his son would be part of making change • How those committed to anti-racism and new to this can begin and the reason why Darius seeks “partnership” over saviorism or “help” • The three-fold challenge Darius gave us, including the specific movies that Darius thinks we should all watch to shift our understanding and perspective • How we all need each other to get free Resources Mentioned: • While Black Podcast • Ahmaud Arbery Is All of Us – Can I Live? • American Son|Netflix • When They See Us|Netflix • 13TH|Netflix • Ep 07: Living Out Loud with Jenjii Hysten • Revisited: Beyond the Trauma: Legacy, Compassion and Change with Mothers Against Police Brutality Co-Founder Sara Mokuria • Ep 55: From Grief to Advocacy and a Circle of Mothers with Trayvon Martin's mother Sybrina Fulton • Desiree Adaway and Diversity is an Asset • Podcast Movement • Justice for Josiah This Episode's Challenge: Darius gave us a threefold challenge: • There is bias inside all of us. We all have it. Try our very best to recognize when our unconscious bias fires. Try to pay attention every time we see or meet a Black person…if our initial intent is to walk in the other direction, stop for a moment and ask yourself why? • Meet someone new and be the first one to say hello and to really see the humanity in them. • Be more intentional in our actions and in whatever media we digest so that we are aware of what's really happening and what others are really going through. Lisbeth Scott is a composer/ singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist and producer based in Los Angeles, California. She has recently completed scores for Universal's feature All My Life and their stunning silent film restoration of Stella Maris. Additionally, she has scored the gorgeous 2021 documentary “Gratitude Revealed “ by Moving Art/Netflix film creator Louie Schwartzberg. Lisbeth was twice nominated for an Annie Award for her score to Amazon's top children's show Tumble Leaf and also received critical acclaim for her score to Netflix's American Son. Scott has written music for over 50 films and television shows including compositions featured in Narnia, Concussion, and True Blood.Lisbeth has just released the first song off a new album she has created. It's so beautiful. Have a listen to it here and follow her work to stay up to date for when the rest of the album is released in May. Here's the link. After raising goosebumps on the skin of all who have heard her sing in the 150 plus films that feature her voice and songs, Scott began scoring films several years ago. Working for many years as a vocalist and collaborating closely with some of Hollywood's top-tier composers including John Williams, Hans Zimmer, John Debney, Nathan Barr, and Harry Gregson Williams, it was a natural progression to focus her talents on scoring films. Her inherent musicality and passion for the medium, along with years of classical training and performance experience are what make Lisbeth Scott such a revered film composer. Classically trained in piano, Lisbeth is fascinated with the textures of every instrument she lays her hands on. She began her keyboard studies at the age of 6 at the New England Conservatory and later added guitar, ukulele, harmonium, harp, dulcimer, and percussion. She has even been known to ‘saw” the strings of cello and violin now and then …(yes literally saw).Among her many instruments, Lisbeth has an extensive collection of Kalimbas, 15 guitars both acoustic and electric, a traditional Koto, an Array Mbira (an electric 4-octave version of an African thumb piano), a Mongolian mouth harp, traditional Didgeridoo (a beautiful gift from a tour in Australia!) and chests full of oddly shaped percussion instruments from around the world. The most treasured part of her collection is her 6 foot 1911 Steinway O grand piano. These cherished instruments are often woven textures in Lisbeth's scores. She also loves bringing the lyricism and emotional depth of her singing voice into her compositions.Lisbeth has studied string arrangement and orchestration and was also a participant in the BMI conducting workshop under the direction of Lucas Richman. She is a member as composer and publisher of BMI, SAGAFTRA, AFM, The Television Academy, and The Dramatists Guild. Her philosophy? Music makes the world go round…it's everywhere….in the touch of ocean spray-on skin, the padding of feet on soft pine needles in the middle of a forest, the high pitched scream of a hawk overhead, the quiet stumbling of a bee making its way through the middle of a sunflower…..The beauty of nature, sound, visual, story, and touch provides a connection between all beings.Much gratitude to the sponsors of Yoga Heart Mind!ww.solemechanics.com.au 15% off with promo code WATKINS6162 https://www.themilkcleanse.comPromo code STUARTWATKINS for 10% offhttps://sacredtaste.comPromo code STUARTWATKINS for 10% offhttps://blesSupport the show (https://stuartwatkins.org/podcast/)

Beyond the Lights: A Conversation with Theater Professionals
I'm so excited for you to listen to (or revisit) my conversation with Erica Hemminger, associate set designer of Moulin Rouge. A lot has happened since we recorded this a year ago, but my fascination with the elephant continues. Please enjoy this rebroadcast of episode four of Beyond the Lights. Please note, the next new episode will premiere on Tuesday, September 7th, and then alternate Mondays moving forward.___________________________________________________________This week we have Erica Hemminger an associate set designer on Broadway. If you've been to a Broadway show within the last 10 years you've probably seen something she's worked on, including but not limited to Anything Goes, Beautiful, American Son, and the biggest one to date Moulin Rouge. We discuss how she got started in set design, why we should all be discussing our salaries more, and just how many elephants are on the Moulin Rouge set. Performer Stories — Fascinating Stories from Top Entertainers
This week's storytellers are Broadway Actor/Singer Kimberly JaJuan, Magician, Ballonist, and Sideshow Performer Zia Quill Kay, Magician and Podcast Host Kayla Drescher, and Celtic Magician Daniel Greenwolf. All the stories in this episode have to do with nightmares unfolding at and during performances. Kimberly talks about missing an entrance cue, Zia tells about a gig that was raided by SWAT, Kayla talks about exiting an illusion too early, and Daniel talks about a fireworks stunt gone wrong. Kimberly JaJuan The first story is told by Kimberly JaJuan, a singer and actor both on and off Broadway. She's a graduate of The Eastman School and of Julliard School earning both Bachelor's and Masters Degrees. Some of her more notable (and favorite) roles have been Singing with Gloria Estefan and Harry Connick, Jr. at the Papal visit at Madison Square Garden, portraying the role of Sarah in RAGTIME on Broadway, and creating the role of Lisette alongside classmate Audra McDonald in MARIE CHRISTINE. Most recently she could have been seen bringing HERCULES to life with the Public Works at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park. She's a long time member and manager of Broadway Inspirational Voices, a diverse, professional choir of broadway artists, united to change lives through the power of music and service. She's also a broadway investor debuting as an Associate Producer on productions like American Son, Ain't Too Proud, and Hadestown to name a few. Here she is talking about the time she missed her entrance cue during a live performance. Zia Quill Kay The second story is by Zia Quill Kay, a balloon artist, magician, clown, and sideshow performer. It't not like he had a choice though, with parents who are also in the performance industry as well. Here he is telling about his very first close up magic gig that got raided by SWAT. Kayla Drescher The third story is my magician and podcast host Kayle Drescher, that creates magic that you care about and can really connect with on a human level. Her magic has taken her all over the world for clients like Microsoft, IBM, and Wells Fargo, among others. She also tours the world with the traveling show, Champions of Magic alongside other fellow magi and is planning to hit the road again in October! You may have seen her on TV shows like Access Hollywood, NBC's Today Show, where she was crowned “The Next Great Magician” by David Copperfield, or on Penn & Teller's Fool Us where Teller literally fell in love with her magic. She's also the host of the SHEzam Podcast, a show that hopes to make itself obsolete, as it brings change in the magic community and other neighboring industries. The goal being to inspire these industries to be more inclusive to all...and it's working! Here she talking about the time she left the box early in a grand illusion performance during Champions of Magic. Here's where you can find out more about Kayla: Kayla's Website: http://magicinheels.com/ Champions of Magic Website: http://championsofmagic.co.uk/ SHEzam Podcast: http://shezampod.com/ Daniel Greenwolf The final story is told by Daniel Greenwolf, an Award-Winning Magician, Writer, Creator, & Slightly Mad Irishman. His show takes Highly Visual Magic, Theatrical Storytelling, Exhilarating Irish Music, Interactive Comedy, & Thrilling Danger and wraps it in a Celtic Theme that has been described as "A Witty, Modern-Day Celtic Viking. Kinda like James Joyce with a Broad Sword." For Five Years In A Row he was voted as one of the Top Five Solo Variety Acts in theUS by the Renaissance Festival Podcast & Renaissance Magazine. He's opened for World-Renowned Musician WENDY RULE, the CAST OF BEATLEMANIA, as well as International Celtic Rock Group ENTER THE HAGGIS You may have also seen him featured in the Film Documentary MAGIC CAMP and on AMC Network's DISPATCHES FROM ELSEWHERE starring Jason Segel and Sally Field. Another fortnight, another episode! We start with our picks and move on to a discussion about American Horror Story: Apocalypse (S8, 2018). As huge horror fans, we'll have other episodes down the line in this genre.... Coco's Top Pick is American Son (2019), performed as a one set straight play, in which an interracial couple waits at the police station for news of their teenage son's whereabouts, revealing the lies a family has told themselves about political race and the limitations of family and love. Despite the gratification of seeing Nia Long and Omar Epps in a sexy thriller, the best thing to say about Fatal Affair (2020) is that it should be saved for date night when you don't really need to finish the film. Two documentaries worth watching are Cannabis (S1E5, The Business of Drugs, 2020), which provides the history of small businesses pushing for legalising the cannabis industry in California and the encroachment of big businesses, and Holy Hell (2016), chronicling 22 years of the Buddhafield cult with file footage from the their videographer, Will Allen, and capturing the emotional journey of Allen's path to accepting the truth. Abla's picks are thin on the ground, so thankfully Coco's detailed comments more than make up for that! These are Season 1 of The Sinner on Netflix, an intriguing suspenseful watch, led by Jessica Biel and Bill Pullman who both pull off nuanced and engaging performances. Abla brings it up because it illustrates a point about some police departments in the US that resorted to pinning crimes on one person to help expedite cases. This was discussed in this thoroughly informative podcast: In The Dark (Season 1). She's also flagging the upcoming Independent Iraqi Film Festival, which will be screened online, showcasing work often made in very difficult conditions. Keep on eye out for updates on their website and their Instagram page. American Horror Story (2011–present) is a 9 season series that airs on FX. Apocalypse (S8) incorporates the characters and storylines from S1, the 12-episode Murder House (2011) and S3, the 13-episode Coven (2013–14). Apocalypse can be summarised as Hogwarts meets The Shining (1980) meets Ghost (1990) meets Rosemary's Baby (1968) meets The Exorcist (1973) meets Lost (2004–2010) meets The Stand (1994). Although Coco thinks the film does avoid the magical Negro trope, which is endemic in horror and fantasy genres, the Benetton Dream Team cast Blacks, Asians, and Latinos is not enough to cover up the two-dimensional strong, black, and unnecessarily single women, e.g., Queenie (Gabourey Sidibe) and Voodoo Queen Marie Laveau (Angela Bassett); but the series is good fun overall, telling an old story in an interesting way, so is recommended. Join me and my close friend, Brent Corbett, in this expansive discussion on the heavy topic of racism and black lives matter. Brent shares a little bit of his history and his journey into the world of motivational speaking. He walks us through his perspective as a black man in regards to racism and gently walks us through ways we can begin to become more positively involved in this narrative. This discussion is far from black and white (no pun intended) and makes a point of highlighting all sides of the narrative. I so appreciate Brent's patient and gentle manner as he sheds some light on this powerful movement. I would LOVE to hear what you decide to do and what you are discovering along the way. If you do any of these tag me on an Instagram story or send a DM of the book you purchased or the documentary you are watching! I know that together we can begin to inspire ourselves and others to continue to educate themselves on the topic of racism, empower themselves to join the narrative and truly become enabled to create tangible change.
