EPISODE 47 - “Laird Cregar (Star of the Month) ” - 08/05/2024 With his sad, dark eyes, hulking frame, and aristocratic speech, actor LAIRD CREGAR often played the complex villain tortured by a sinister past or an unrequited love that turns into an obsession. No one played characters with suppressed anguish, a tortured soul, or darkness lingering beneath the surface better than he did. While he only made 16 films in a period of five years, he is unforgettable. His desire to be thin was his achilles heel that turned tragic. This week join us as we take a deep dive into the short life and career of this amazing actor.  SHOW NOTES:  Sources: Laird Cregar: A Hollywood Tragedy (2017), by Gregory William Mank; “Atlas With A Grin,” by Fredda Dudley, December 1941, Screenland magazine; “Setbacks To Fame,” by Dorothy B.Haas, June 1942, Silver Screen magazine; “Bold, Bad, (Bluffing) Cregar,” by Barbara Berch, January 1945, Screenland magazine; “Ripping Tales: Laird Cregar: The Forgotten Ripper,” by Kevin G. Join us this week on Vintage Classic Radio for our "Sunday Night Playhouse" feature, as we revisit a captivating performance from the archives of "Lux Radio Theatre." This week, we present "This Gun For Hire," originally broadcast on January 25, 1943. Dive into the gripping world of film noir with this radio adaptation of Graham Greene's novel, showcasing the dark tale of Phillip Raven, a ruthless assassin with a conscience, played by the iconic Alan Ladd. This drama was based on a film that put Ladd on the map. Alongside him, Joan Blondell stars as Ellen Graham. The plot centers on Raven, a hitman seeking vengeance after being betrayed by his employers. He crosses paths with Ellen Graham, a nightclub singer secretly working as a spy to uncover a dangerous espionage ring. Other in the cast include Laird Cregar, Jack LaRue, Paula Winslowe, Joe Latham, Vicki Lang, Jeff Corey, W.R. Burnett and Arthur Q. Bryan. Tune in to experience the suspense and shadowy intrigue of "This Gun For Hire," brought to life by some of Hollywood's legendary stars in one of radio's most cherished formats.

Those Wonderful People Out There In The Dark

The Asphalt Jungle came out of MGM (yeah, MGM. Not exactly a wonderful musical as we shall see) in 1950, the classic era of film noir in the US. But Jungle might also be pegged with a label that someone walking down the street would now recognize: it's a heist film. The story comes from the wonderful author of crime, W. R. Burnett, and his 1949 novel. Burnett came up the hard way, working as a night clerk in a hotel while learning writing, exposing him to all sorts of characters and situations, seedy or not. His first novel, Little Caesar, established the gangster story in America, followed quickly by the film adaptation, starring Edward G. Robinson. Burnett made a habit of writing about a novel per year and rapidly turning around and selling the rights to Hollywood, sometimes writing the screenplay himself. He came up with the novels or screenplays that formed the basis for such classics as Scarface, with Paul Muni, memorably remade with Pacino, High Sierra, with Bogart and Ida Lupino, King Of The Underworld, The Dark Command, This Gun For Hire, which made diminutive Alan Ladd a star, The Great Escape, and Ice Station Zebra. Burnett's novels were unusual, not for the protagonists' helpless fall into crime in the big dirty city, but a contrast with their desire for a simpler, rural, straight life, one which they seldom achieve. As we shall see in Jungle. email: David@thosewonderfulpeople.comWebsite and blog: www.thosewonderfulpeople.comIG: @thosewonderfulpeopleTwitter: @FilmsInTheDark

On this episode, I focus on the story behind the 1990 live compilation album NYC SKA LIVE.   It's hard to believe its been 30 years since it was recorded and released. The NYC SKA LIVE concert was originally organized by Moon Records so that the crop of bands then on the NYC ska scene could be filmed by director Joe Massot for New York City Ska Craze, a planned sequel to his 2 Tone era film Dance Craze released in 1981.  The show was taped live at the Cat Club, which was located on 13th Street and Fourth Avenue in Manhattan on March 26th, 1990.  The dawn of the 90s NYC ska scene was marked by the release of the Toasters third full-length album 'This Gun For Hire' -- the first without co-front men Sean Dinsmore and Lionel Bernard who had left and signed a record deal as The Unity 2 -- and the New York Citizen's seminal 'Stranger Things Have Happened' EP which it can be argued was the first American ska album to feature ska core.  Don't believe me? Give “Hell Town” a listen. Nearly five years on from the release of the N.Y. Beat: Hit & Run compilation which captured the sound of mid-80's New York City ska, NYC SKA LIVE documents the evolution of New York City ska into a diverse, post-2-Tone mix of sounds with more of an emphasis on roots reggae, traditional ska, rocksteady and dancehall reggae. While The Toasters and The New York Citizens are evolving sound wise, newer bands including my band Bigger Thomas, King Django's post-Boilers band Skinnerbox, The Steadys, Skadanks and Long Island's Scofflaws all offer their unique takes on American ska at the start of the 1990's.Please note: The music clips included in this podcast fall under the “Fair Use Doctrine” as defined by Section 107 of the Copyright Act.
