This time on Ron's Amazing Stories, we're diving into one of Alfred Hitchcock's most celebrated thrillers—Shadow of a Doubt. Originally released as a film in 1943 and starring Joseph Cotten and Teresa Wright, the story gets a radio makeover in the Screen Director's Playhouse adaptation from November 1950. This time, none other than Cary Grant steps into the role of Uncle Charlie, bringing his trademark charm with an unsettling twist. What makes Shadow of a Doubt stand out in Hitchcock's catalog is its unique suspense style. We, the audience, know from the beginning that Uncle Charlie has a dark secret. The real tension comes from watching his niece slowly uncover the horrifying truth about the man she once adored. It's a masterclass in slow-burn suspense, set against the deceptively cozy backdrop of small-town America. On the podcast today, you'll hear: Background on Alfred Hitchcock's 1943 masterpiece. Cary Grant's turn as Uncle Charlie in the 1950 radio adaptation. A full presentation of the Screen Director's Playhouse episode of Shadow of a Doubt. So, grab your headphones, settle into your favorite chair, and prepare for a suspenseful ride into Hitchcock territory. As always, stay tuned after the play for my thoughts and a few laughs to lighten the mood. In this transformative coaching session, Christine guides Sarah, a 39-year-old single woman, through releasing guilt, healing her self-worth, and letting go of codependent patterns in relationships. Sarah shares the profound guilt she feels after leaving an abusive marriage, particularly since her ex-husband later passed away. Struggling with feelings of responsibility, she's found herself repeating self-sacrificing patterns and attracting emotionally unavailable partners. Christine helps Sarah uncover how her childhood experiences of emotional neglect and caretaking shaped her beliefs about love and self-worth. As they delve deeper, Sarah realizes that her guilt and sense of responsibility are rooted in early family dynamics, where she learned to prioritize others' needs over her own. Christine encourages her to reconnect with her inner “adult self”—a wise, grounded voice within her that initially gave her the strength to leave her toxic marriage. This part of Sarah is key to rebuilding her confidence, trusting her instincts, and setting healthy boundaries. The conversation highlights how our subconscious often seeks familiar relationship dynamics from childhood, making it challenging to break-free from harmful cycles. For Sarah, Christine suggests focusing on cultivating self-worth by reframing her inner dialogue and practicing self-care over dating. By pausing romantic pursuits, Sarah can create the inner stability needed to attract healthier connections, and leave behind codependent tendencies. Consider/Ask Yourself: Have you been drawn to relationships where your needs are ignored or undervalued? Do you struggle with guilt when setting boundaries or prioritizing self-care? Are you holding yourself responsible for something that was never truly in your control? The Guest's Key Insights & A-HA's: Sarah realizes she has been unconsciously choosing emotionally unavailable partners, mirroring her unmet needs from childhood. She understands that her lingering guilt about leaving her ex-husband has fueled codependent behaviors. Her “adult Sarah” voice, which led her to leave her marriage, is an essential inner resource she can rely on. Sarah sees how the part of her focused-on guilt, and self-punishment needs to make way for self-love and healing. How to Get Over It and On With It: Prioritize Self-Worth: Reframe your self-image by focusing on your worth outside of relationship dynamics. Reconnect with Your Inner Child: Address the needs of your inner child and give yourself permission to release old survival strategies. Focus on Self-Growth: Take dating off the table temporarily to focus on self-healing practices. Seek Healthy Relational Dynamics: Cultivate relationships where you feel seen, safe, and appreciated rather than diminished. This week, we continue exploring the story of Abram and our moments of doubt. What place does doubt have in our faith? This question is one that can weigh heavily on us, because how dare we doubt the God of the universe? Well, that is a query that we talk about this week. There is a value to doubt because it can strengthen our faith. Asking questions allows the opportunity for God to provide the answers and prove He is trustworthy. The case of Lucy Letby generated shock, revulsion and bewilderment, casting a long shadow over the trust that we place in those who care for the most vulnerable. In the latest episode of Double Jeopardy, Ken and Tim discuss one of the most controversial cases in British legal history—the conviction of Lucy Letby, the neonatal nurse sentenced to 15 whole-life sentences for the murder of seven infants and the attempted murder of eight others. Ken and Tim explore the widespread media coverage and the intense public reaction to Letby's case, including the growing number of conspiracy theories that have emerged on the internet as well as more serious articles in reputable media outlets. They critically examine the arguments put forth by those questioning her conviction and discuss the Court of Appeal's comprehensive rejection of her application for leave to appeal and the refusal to admit fresh expert evidence. They emphasise that any discussion about a miscarriage of justice must start with an understanding of the basis for the Court of Appeal's rejection of Lucy Letby's appeal. The episode also touches on the upcoming public inquiry to be Chaired by Lady Justice Thirlwall (which will investigate events at the Countess of Chester hospital and whether the management structure at the hospital contributed to the failure to protect babies from Letby's actions) and whether the public inquiry has the potential to generate new evidence that may form the basis for a second appeal following a referral by the Criminal Cases Review Commission. Tim and Ken aim to shed light on the complexity of the case and are critical of those who have questioned Letby's guilt without understanding the details of the case and the dynamics of a criminal trial. They stress the importance of basing any claims of a miscarriage of justice on a thorough understanding of the evidence, the legal processes involved and especially the details of the 58 page Judgment of the Court of Appeal handed down on 2nd July 2024. Here we go…it's our first episode! Sure, Jeremy's seen the big Hitchcock movies like REAR WINDOW and VERTIGO, and he even has a couple of black and white favorites (SHADOW OF A DOUBT and STRANGERS ON A TRAIN). But what will he make of a lesser Hitchcock film? This month we take on Dave's pick, the underappreciated and now relatively forgotten 1953 film I CONFESS, starring Montgomery Clift. Clift stars as Father Michael Logan, a Quebec City priest whose vows prevent him from revealing the identity of a murderer, even when he himself becomes the prime suspect of the investigation. What is this movie? Canadian cozy mystery? Location-heavy quasi-noir? Hitchcock's love letter to Catholicism in the form of a risqué morality play? Dave and Jeremy talk about mood and style, the ethical dilemma at the heart of the movie, and weigh in on that burning question: was Montgomery Clift the original “hot priest?” Thank you for listening! Please subscribe, leave a rating or review, and share this show with your friends. We'll be back next month with Jeremy's reply. Music by Jeremy Donald. Find Dave here: https://linktr.ee/davedwelling

Hitchcock is on record as saying this is his personal favorite of his films. We watch and discuss!

What happens when a young woman begins to suspect her sophisticated Uncle Charlie– who happens to be staying in her family's home for a visit– is the notorious “Merry Widow” killer? That's the question addressed by Hitchcock's 1943 classic “Shadow of a Doubt.” The thriller is reportedly Hitchcock's favorite movie, one that features Teresa Wright as the strong, plucky heroine, and Joseph Cotten in the role of the charming, sociopathic villain. Tragically, however, the serial killer upon whom this movie is loosely based was even darker and his crimes more horrific than the one Hitchcock brought to life. In this episode we delve into the true crime behind “Shadow of a Doubt,” the murderous spree of Earle Leonard Nelson– aka “The Gorilla Man” and “The Dark Strangler”-- who has been described as one of the most prolific and feared serial killers of the early 20th century. *Please note that this episode may not be suitable for all audiences.
