In our search for more knowledge about the horror genre, the films we love, and the people behind them, many horror fans began their journey with reference books. Long before the internet, these books served as stepping stones, introducing fans to films they had never heard of and offering deeper insight into the people behind the movies they already knew and loved. It was like opening doors for the first time—or pushing open ones that had only been slightly ajar—allowing us to explore and learn so much more. In this episode, we welcome author Bryan Senn to the show to discuss these essential reference books. With over three decades of experience writing about sci-fi and horror in a variety of magazines—not to mention his own books on multiple subjects—Bryan brings a wealth of knowledge to the conversation. So sit back and enjoy—but keep a notepad handy, because you might want to jot down a few titles to track down! The Leopard Man (1943), The Seventh Victim (1943), Isle of the Dead (1945) Back in episode 23, we covered producer Val Lewton and three of his films. While Lewton only produced about a dozen films—and only a handful of them horror—his work made a huge impact on the genre. That's why we've decided to discuss three more of his films, hoping to inspire other fans to seek out not only the ones we've covered but his other titles as well. With the help of a talented group of craftsmen—including directors Jacques Tourneur and Mark Robson, screenwriter Ardel Wray, and a skilled cast of actors he worked with repeatedly—Lewton created films that stood apart. They weren't just different from what he was hired to produce; they defied the expectations of most horror fans at the time. His films had style, compelling stories, and uniquely well-developed characters. They're a testament to how effective something as simple as a walk down the street can be when crafted by the right people. Films mentioned in this episode: The Body Snatcher (1945), Cat People (1942), The Curse the Cat People (1944), Curse of the Demon (1957), The Day After (1983), Isle of the Dead (1945), I Walked with a Zombie (1943), The Leopard Man (1943), Old Dark House (1932), The Seventh Victim (1943)

It was the kind of headline that slices through the noise—a whisper that turns into a roar: Rex Heuermann has been charged with a seventh murder. Seven victims. Seven lives erased, but now, after 24 years, one of them—Valerie Mack—was speaking, at least through the cold, calculated evidence, and the weight of history was pressing in on a community that had waited far too long. On a gray December morning in Riverhead, inside the sterile confines of a Long Island courthouse, Rex Heuermann stood before Judge Timothy Mazzei. The room itself seemed to hold its breath as he shuffled forward, his towering frame casting shadows over the courtroom floor. His face was an unmoving mask of indifference, though the tension in his rigid stance betrayed the cracks. The prosecutor's words sliced through the air like razors: Valerie Mack, 24 years old, a Philadelphia woman who disappeared in 2000, her body dismembered and dumped in two separate locations—first in Manorville's desolate woods, then, 11 years later, near the cursed stretch of Gilgo Beach. Two crime scenes, two decades apart, yet connected by the macabre calling card of a man prosecutors now call a “meticulous predator.” Her case had gone cold, one of hundreds boxed away in a police department overwhelmed by unsolved tragedies. Until now. The Breakthrough Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond Tierney spoke with grim finality. This wasn't speculation—this was DNA, hard science brought to life by advancements that didn't exist in the year Mack vanished. “Justice delayed is not justice denied,” Tierney intoned, his voice reverberating through the chamber. The evidence that had once been incomplete—a cruel teaser of closure—had been rendered irrefutable. Yet when Judge Mazzei turned to Heuermann and asked for his plea, the response came swift, a hoarse defiance that echoed into the silence: “Your honor, I am not guilty of any of these charges.” Bailiffs glanced nervously at the crowd, but no one made a move. How could they? For the families, the friends, and the community that had lived under the pall of these killings, the wounds weren't just reopened—they were torn asunder. People who had endured years of unrelenting questions—“Why?” “Who?”—were now met with a man, flesh and blood, denying it all. And that denial stung as sharply as the crimes themselves. Valerie Mack: A Forgotten Name Resurfaces Valerie Mack, prosecutors stated, was more than just a headline. She had been someone's daughter, someone's friend. A young woman with dreams of stability and escape, dreams that ended somewhere between the harsh grit of Atlantic City's streets and Long Island's darkened woods. By 2000, Atlantic City had already become a graveyard for the desperate, where survival was not guaranteed, and trusting the wrong person could be fatal. Mack was swallowed by that darkness. Her torso appeared in Manorville, a remote and wooded area in Long Island where few passersby venture. Eleven years later, as investigators combed Gilgo Beach for more answers, the rest of Mack's remains surfaced. The discovery confirmed what everyone already feared—this was not an isolated act. This was a pattern. The Hard Drive and a Chilling Playbook In the basement of Heuermann's Massapequa home, investigators reportedly found documents that prosecutors describe as plans for the murders. A step-by-step blueprint that prosecutors now claim details the planning, the process, and the aftermath of his crimes. Documents included instructions detailing dismemberment and concealment of identifying features, which prosecutors argue demonstrate premeditation. Other notes outlined quiet execution—checking weather conditions and finding isolated “staging areas.” The planning didn't stop at the kill. It outlined a careful escape—“Change tires. Burn gloves. Dispose of pictures. Set an alibi.” Cold reminders to refine and perfect. Prosecutors described the documents as evidence of a methodical process that evolved over time, reflecting deliberate and calculated actions. Prosecutors stated that the documents included references to works by John Douglas, a former FBI profiler, as part of their evidence linking Heuermann's interest to serial killer psychology. This wasn't idle reading, they said. This was practice. The courtroom's chill deepened with every revelation. You could feel the collective dread—a realization that this wasn't the spontaneous savagery of a man who had lost control. This was someone whose control defined the act itself. Valerie Mack's murder, according to prosecutors, fit perfectly into the grim framework. Jessica Taylor and the Expanding Pattern Jessica Taylor, another victim in this tragic case, was a 20-year-old sex worker who disappeared in 2003. Her torso was discovered in Manorville later that year, and subsequent searches uncovered additional remains near Gilgo Beach in 2011, connecting her case to the same haunting pattern. Prosecutors noted that her tattoo had been deliberately mutilated, likely to hinder identification. Her arms, her head—gone. And yet, years later, the expanded search of Gilgo Beach led to her skull and hands, further tying her story to Mack's, and now, to Heuermann. A Community Holds Its Breath Outside the courthouse, the scene was tense. Reporters gathered with cameras rolling, while families of the victims arrived in hopes of hearing answers and progress in the case. There was no answer. Not yet. For now, January 15 looms. Prosecutors will return with more evidence, more connections, more dots strung together. But for the families, answers won't erase the hollow space left behind by those 10 victims. Let's face it: horror fans are, as a group, a little bit obsessive. When we sink our teeth into something we do not do it barely or easily, we take a big, honkin' bite.  If we become infatuated with a director, we want to see every film they've made, read a book about them, hear people talk about them, watch documentaries about them, and so on.  And the same is true for national horror cinemas, regional American horror cinemas, important eras, actors, subgenres, and the like.  And in recent years, a handful of visionary producers of physical media have recognized an opportunity in our longing and have invented and are currently inundating us with boxed sets.  These comprehensive, exhaustive, wonderful monsters have become a gravitational center point for our genre. But just a handful of years ago they mostly didn't exist, or were announced only every few years. Nowadays, we get several per year from companies like Severin, Vinegar Syndrome, Indicator, Arrow, and Scream! Factory, just to name a few.  So we figured it was time for Discover the Horror to take a long look at the history and impact of these monolithic pieces of film history.  Movies mentioned: 100 Years of Horror, Abby (1974), Alien (1979), Beast of Blood (1970), Beyond Dream's Door (1989), Beyond the Valley of the Dolls (1970), The Black Cat (1934), Blade in the Dark (1983), Blood of Ghastly Horror (1967), The Body Snatcher (1945), Bride of Frankenstein (1935), Carnival Magic (1983), Carnival of Blood (1970), Cat People (1942), City of the Living Dead (1980), Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things (1972), The Chooper (1971), Creature with the Atomic Brain (1955), Curse of the Cat People (1944), Dawn of the Mummy (1981), Day of the Animals (1977), Deathdream (1974), Demons (1985), Demons 2 (1986), Deranged (1974), The Devil-Doll (1936), Dracula (1931), Emanuelle in Bangkok (1976), The Eroticist (1972), Fiend with the Electronic Brain (1967), Final Exam (1990), Flesh for Frankenstein (1973), The Fly (1958), Four Skulls of Jonathan Drake (1959), Frankenstein (1931), Freaks (1932), Friday the 13th (1980), The Ghost Ship (1943), The Giant Claw (1957), The Godfather (1972), Godzilla (1954), Grizzly (1976), Gruesome Twosome (1967), Hellraiser (1987), Help Me . . . Sheckley was born to a Jewish family in Brooklyn, New York on July 16th, 1928. After graduating high school, he hitchhiked across country to California. He worked several jobs, joined the Army and left military service just two years later. Sheckley graduated from New York University in 1951 and within months his career as a writer took off. In late 1951 he sold his first story, “Final Examination” to “Imagination Stories of Science and Fantasy” magazine. He wrote more than 120 short stories in the 1950s and he continued writing until he died in 2005.He not only wrote short stories and novels but TV series episodes too. His 1953 short story “Seventh Victim” was the basis for the Italian film The 10th Victim. It starred Ursula Andress. You will hear “Seventh Victim” in a few weeks here on the podcast. The movie “Robots” which came out a few weeks ago starring Shailene Woodley is based on the Robert Sheckley short story “The Robot Who Looked Like Me”The short story you're about to hear was adapted for the short-lived TV series Masters of Science Fiction. We'll find our story in the February 1953 publication, “Galaxy Science Fiction” magazine. For our RKO 1943 episode, we look at two films that exemplify the nascent RKO noir style: Richard Wallace's The Fallen Sparrow, starring John Garfield as a traumatized Spanish Civil War veteran hunted by Nazis and the Val Lewton production The Seventh Victim, starring Kim Hunter as a sheltered young woman who wants to find out about the sorrows of the world and does not want to be told to drink her milk. Featuring cinematography by Nicholas Musuraca and scores by Roy Webb, these films embrace opacity and ooze paranoia while presenting portraits of sophisticated New York milieus harbouring evil in their midst. And, keeping to the noir theme, in Fear and Moviegoing in Toronto we discuss a 30th anniversary screening of Brian De Palma's Carlito's Way, starring Al Pacino as a gangster who carries his doom around inside him.  Time Codes: 0h 00m 45s:      THE FALLEN SPARROW [(dir. It's Pride Month, and much like the United States, we're going back in time and getting scared of gay people. Come hang out while we talk about the little-known bleak cult horror of The Seventh Victim (1943), along with Hitchcock's classic tale of murder, intrigue, and out-of-control carousels, Strangers On a Train (1951). We mention it within the episode, but as an additional warning, The Seventh Victim deals heavily with suicide, so if you want to skip past that part of the double feature, you can pick back up with Strangers On a Train at the 32:45 mark. We get high-vallewton* with Tim Quirk, longtime cinephile and frontman of one of The Pink Smoke's favorite bands, Too Much Joy. At the height of the pandemic, Quirk initiated a binge of great movies that led him to Val Lewton's legendary run of low-budget horror films produced for RKO Pictures in the 1940's. Quirk was captivated by these deep philosophical explorations of darkness and isolation, which directly inspired songs on the latest Too Much Joy albums, Mistakes Were Made and All These Fucking Feelings. Focusing on The Seventh Victim and I Walked with a Zombie (both released in 1943), we tap into Tim's enthusiasm for the economical creepiness, profound purple dialogue and "the glitter of putrescence" that preoccupies those who inhabit the shadows of Lewton's screen. Are they the real monsters? Do we as a society have a collective death wish? Are these complex explorations of loneliness, fear and self-destruction even really horror movies? However you define them, there's no question that Lewton's films are unlike anything else. * Like, highfalutin.** ** We would at least task any other lyricists inspired by these movies to write a song that rhymes "highfalutin" with "Val Lewton." X Minus One is an American half-hour science fiction radio drama series that broadcast from April 24, 1955 to January 9, 1958 in various time slots on NBC. Known for high production values in adapting stories from the leading American authors of the era, X Minus One has been described as one of the finest offerings of American radio drama and one of the best science fiction series in any medium. Overview: Initially a revival of NBC's Dimension X (1950–51), the first 15 episodes of X Minus One were new versions of Dimension X episodes, but the remainder were adaptations by NBC staff writers, including Ernest Kinoy and George Lefferts, of newly published science fiction stories by leading writers in the field, including Isaac Asimov, Ray Bradbury, Philip K. Dick, Robert A. Heinlein, Frederik Pohl and Theodore Sturgeon, along with some original scripts by Kinoy and Lefferts. Included in the series were adaptations of Robert Sheckley's "Skulking Permit," Bradbury's "Mars Is Heaven", Heinlein's "Universe" and "The Green Hills of Earth'', " Pohl's "The Tunnel under the World", J. T. McIntosh's "Hallucination Orbit", Fritz Leiber's "A Pail of Air '', and George Lefferts' "The Parade". The program opened with announcer Fred Collins delivering the countdown, leading into the following introduction (although later shows beginning with Episode 37 were partnered with Galaxy Science Fiction rather than Astounding Science Fiction): Countdown for blastoff... X minus five, four, three, two, X minus one... Fire! [Rocket launch SFX] From the far horizons of the unknown come transcribed tales of new dimensions in time and space. These are stories of the future; adventures in which you'll live in a million could-be years on a thousand may-be worlds. The National Broadcasting Company, in cooperation with Street & Smith, publishers of Astounding Science Fiction presents... X Minus One. The series was canceled after the 126th broadcast on January 9, 1958. However, the early 1970s brought a wave of nostalgia for old-time radio; a new experimental episode, "The Iron Chancellor" by Robert Silverberg, was produced in 1973, but it failed to revive the series. NBC also tried broadcasting the old recordings, but their irregular once-monthly scheduling kept even devoted listeners from following the broadcasts. The series was re-released in podcast form beginning on June 22, 2007. In November 2008, Counter-Productions Theater Company became the first theater company to stage three episodes, "The Parade", "A Logic Named Joe", and "Hallucination Orbit".

In a podcast first, the podcast...repeats itself. But in a thematic way! To celebrate the end of Shocktober alongside Halloween, Peter returns to five different conversations exploring the horror genre in some way. First, Michael Koresky talks about the fear-inducing but plainly stylized The Seventh Victim, which turns classical continuity into a source of horror. Then, Kim Morgan explores trauma in the highly underrated rape drama Something Wild with Carroll Baker. Then it's back to Classical Hollywood with Farran Nehme-Smith's choice of Three Strangers, a supernatural film noir where a promise from a Chinese goddess only leads to doom for Geraldine Fitzgerald, Sydney Greetstreet, and poor Peter Lorre. Then the line between horror, comedy, documentary, and general "WTF" is truly bent with Matt Singer's choice of The Buried Secret of M. Night Shaymalan, which (inadvertently?) explores the limits and literalism of auteurism. Finally, we go to the purest horror film of all time with Angela Catalano's choice of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, a film that knows no boundaries when it comes to showing unadulterated malice. It's time to revisit our most frightening conversations! 0:00-3:52 Opening 5:16-19:03 The Seventh Victim with Michael Koresky 20:45-34:50 Something Wild with Kim Morgan 36:48-55:08 Three Strangers with Farran Nehme-Smith 56:11-59:13 Sponsorship Section 1:00:59-1:20:45 The Buried Secret of M. It would probably take days to count the number of film publications that launched in the early years of the current millennium, but Reverse Shot, which Michael Koresky co-founded, has been a cornerstone of intelligent and dynamic film writing for over a decade now. Peter sits down with Michael to chart out the publication's origins, the voice the site created, Michael's own work with the Criterion Collection, and his upcoming book on British director Terrence Davies. Finally, the two examine the nothing-else-like-it horror film, The Seventh Victim, a Val Lewton produced existential drama that manages to bring chills down both their spines with one little phrase: "death is good."   0:00-1:36 Opening2:24-8:40 Establishing Shots - BAMCinemafest (Ellie Lumme and Something, Anything)9:25-54:02 Deep Focus - Michael Koresky56:48-1:11:49 Double Exposure - The Seventh Victim (Mark Robson)1:11:53-1:13:32 Close
