Hollywood:1975. Martin Scorsese sits in his apartment, enraged. He wants to literally kill the man who is ruining his to-be-released film, Taxi Driver. Scorsese's friends, filmmakers Stephen Spielberg, Brian De Palma, John Millius, and Paul Schraeder rush to Scorsese's side to talk him out of committing murder, but when they arrive, their friend Marty acts less like himself and more like his Travis Bickle character from the film he's trying to save. This is the story of that night. Martin Scorsese is certainly one of the greatest filmmakers of all time. Jake wants to know: who is your favorite filmmaker?
Give that Joe guy a raise! Everything else though.... Fanatic, released in 1982 and later distributed by Troma under the title The Last Horror Film, is an ambitious yet confused attempt at blending psychological thriller, horror, satire, and social commentary. Directed by David Winters, the film follows Vinny Durand (Joe Spinell), a socially awkward taxi driver in New York who dreams of becoming a Hollywood filmmaker. Vinny's obsession with horror star Jana Bates (Caroline Munro) takes a dark turn when he follows her to the Cannes Film Festival, believing he can convince her to star in his debut film. Soon, people connected to Jana begin to disappear, leaving the audience to wonder if Vinny's fantasies have turned murderous. On the surface, Fanatic has all the trappings of a Taxi Driver knockoff, with Spinell's Vinny bearing eerie similarities to De Niro's Travis Bickle: a lonely man whose delusions of grandeur lead to a disturbing descent into obsession. However, where Taxi Driver offers a focused character study and searing critique of urban decay, Fanatic meanders between tones, never quite deciding what it wants to be. Is it a darkly comedic jab at the absurdity of the film industry, with its over-the-top Cannes sequences and caricatured players? A horror film dissecting the dangers of unchecked fandom? Or a social critique of anti-horror activists and censorship? The movie flirts with all these ideas but fails to commit to any, leaving the audience in a muddled state of uncertainty. There's undeniable charm in its chaotic ambition, but the result is a mishmash of clashing themes and tonal inconsistencies. What Fanatic does have, however, is Joe Spinell. His performance is nothing short of extraordinary, especially given the film's modest budget. Spinell imbues Vinny with a mix of vulnerability, creepiness, and manic energy that is utterly captivating. His ability to oscillate between pitiable and menacing elevates the film far beyond what one might expect from a low-budget production, especially one released by Troma. Spinell's portrayal is a masterclass in character work, showing what can be achieved even in a film with clear limitations. Despite its flaws, Fanatic has its moments of intrigue and campy fun. The Cannes backdrop offers a unique setting for a horror film, and there's an undeniable novelty in watching Spinell and Munro share the screen again after Maniac. But for all its ambition, Fanatic ultimately bites off more than it can chew. It's a film that tries to be everything and ends up being little more than a curiosity piece—worth watching for Spinell's mesmerizing performance, but a frustrating experience for those hoping for cohesion or a clear narrative purpose.

In this episode, we unpack the movie's reflection on and foresight into the multifaceted changes within American society and politics. We start from the traditional motifs of Western films and further dive into the depiction of male-female dynamics amidst the 70's urban decay, dissecting how the film handles the nuanced socio-cultural layers of that time. We examine protagonist Travis and his journey, his moral nihilism, pervasive sense of isolation, and its affiliations with the Incel movement – and of course, how all these elements still echo within contemporary far-right political discourse. In a discussion that much of our longrunning Joker analysis has built to, we do a deep dive into Martin Scorsese's Taxi Driver (1976). We explain the foundational place of Scorsese's film in the feedback loop between media and spectacular crime that we call the Joker Cycle. Looking at other relevant films and filmmakers, we speculate on the possible role of Brian de Palma in the Taxi Driver psy-op, discuss Peter Bogdanovich's Targets (1968) as an early entry into the feedback loop, and explain the over-the-top revelation of the method in The Last Horror Film (1982). Breaking down Taxi Driver, we talk about the manufactured profile of the lone wolf spectacular criminal, Travis Bickle as proto-incel, and how the movie is a paradigmatic example of MK-culture reality/fiction breakdown.CORRECTION: The Terror was released in 1963 rather than 1968.https://twitter.com/CinemaPsyophttps://www.patreon.com/PsyopCinemahttp://psyop-cinema.com/https://linktr.ee/psyopcinemathomas-psyopcinema@protonmail.combrett-psyopcinema@protonmail.com
How many times have you or heard someone say “i'm obsessed with [whatever]”…you're trying to say that there's something of which you can't get enough…it could be anything from a flavour of ice cream to a reality TV show…it's usually just hyperbole and exaggeration… But if we get clinical, obsession can be a form of mental illness…we open up the psychology textbooks, we learn that a true obsession is a recurring thought about something or someone…it's always on a person's mind, maybe even 24/7…we're talking thoughts, dreams, urges, and fantasies… These obsessions, this rabid focus, may be intrusive, unwelcome, all-consuming, and dangerous…a person may end up surrendering themselves to these thoughts, driven to focus on the object of the obsession full-time… Take the case of John Hinckley, jr…he was from a wealthy Texas family who owned an oil company…but john didn't fit in…he tried going to university but eventually dropped out…he moved to California with dreams of being a songwriter…that didn't work…when he returned to Texas, he had to confess that the girlfriend he said he had out west didn't exist… Hinckley disappeared into himself with severe emotional issues…antidepressants and tranquilizers were prescribed…but he also started buying guns and target shooting…and he spent a lot of time watching the 1976 Martin Scorsese film, “Taxi Driver”…if you know the film, you'll know that Robert De Niro plays Travis Bickle, a disturbed loner who plots to kill a presidential candidate…he runs across a 12-year-old prostitute named Iris steesmas, played by Jody Foster… Hinckley became obsessed with Foster…when she enrolled at Yale, Hinckley moved to Connecticut to stalk her…he left her poems and love letters, and called whenever he could find her number…Hinckley became determined to attract her attention…how?...he thought about hijacking a plane…maybe he'd just show up one day and shoot himself in front of her… Finally, he determined the best way was to assassinate a president, just like Travis Bickle…he trailed Jimmy Carter for a while but was arrested…more psychiatric treatment followed…and then Ronald Reagan was elected… On March 30, 1981, Hinckley pulled out a 22-calibre pistol and fired it six times as Reagan left the Hilton Hotel in Washington after addressing a conference…Reagan survived, but it was touch-and-go…others were hurt, too… After a trial, he was found not guilty by reason of insanity….he was finally released from custody in 2022… The world of music has many obsessives, although few as extreme as Hinckley…there is one standout, though: a young loner in Florida who, like Hinckley, was determined to attract the attention of his love…in the process, he turned into a murderous hater… I'm Alan Cross, and have I got a story for you…this is uncharted: crime and mayhem in the music industry episode 8…the tale of the Bjork acid bomber… Show contact info: X (formerly Twitter): @AlanCross Website: curiouscast.ca Email: Alan@alancross.ca Learn more about your ad choices. On March 30, 1981 President Ronald Reagan was shot and wounded by John Hinckley Jr. Hinckley believed that assassinating a living President would impress actress Jodie Foster. Thus, Martin Scorsese's Taxi Driver lives in infamy due to its complicated connected to the assassination attempt. With 'Killers of the Flower Moon' just weeks away, film critic Ben Friedman is joined by filmmaker, actor, and founder of production company GTE Productions Mariah Owen to discuss maybe the most controversial movie of the 20th century: Taxi Driver. Directed by Martin Scorsese and written by Paul Schrader, Taxi Driver stars Robert De Niro as Travis Bickle, a vigilante taxi driver out to save Iris, a 12 year old prostitute played by Jodie Foster. Harvey Keitel, Cybill Shepherd, and Albert Brooks co-star. Maybe you know Taxi Driver because this is the movie that supposedly inspired John Hinckley Jr. to shoot President Ronald Reagan, and how Martin Scorsese's film was unfairly blamed as dangerous. Az évadaink közti szünetben meghallgathatjátok az élő felvételét a legutóbbi Vakfolt mozizásnak, amelyen Martin Scorsese művészetének egyik legmeghatározóbb alkotását, a Taxi Driver című filmjét néztük meg a hallgatóinkkal. Az 1976-os mozi a filmes nagymestert és Paul Schrader forgatókönyvírót hozta össze, aki számára mélyen személyes ihletésű volt a Taxisofőr története. A műsorvezetők András és Péter. Áttekintjük a Taxisofőr készülésének kulturális-politikai kontextusát az 1970-es évek Amerikájában, amikor új, radikális filmesek tűntek fel a színen. A film és a realizmus viszonyát, Travis Bickle karakterének izolációját és mártírkomplexusát is elemezzük, beleértve a Madonna-kurva komplexust. A film kétértelmű befejezését is megvitatjuk. A Taxisofőr politikai témáját és a legforróbban vitatott vonatkozásait is megnézzük, hogy ezek segítségével tömören helyre tegyk a Taxi Driver-t, mint a 20. század egyik legfontosabb filmjét. Végül előtekintünk a podcast szeptemberi évadjára, amelyben tovább folytatjuk a nagy filmes klasszikusok elemzését. James Charney is a psychiatrist, cinephile, professor, and author. His latest book, “Madness at the Movies” examines the mental disorders by which Hollywood's most infamously deranged characters (Travis Bickle from Scorcese's “Taxi Driver”; Norman Bates from Hitchcock's “Psycho”) are afflicted. The book, written for a popular audience, is an extension of a beloved course (also entitled, “Madness at the Movies”) that he taught at Yale University for many years. A physician by training, Dr. Charney is not only a lover of movies, but a faithful student of their history and a discerning judge of their merit. As you'll see, his knowledge of film history is encyclopedic, and his passion for the art is infectious! It was an absolute honor to speak with him and I can't wait to watch all of the films he recommended! In this episode, Dr. Charney and I discuss: His exposure to the cinema at a young age; The importance of the movie theater in the 1950s (contrasted with its unimportance today); The communal experience of attending the theater; Being traumatized by horror films as a boy (and how that became the genre to which he later devoted much of his professorial career!); The greatest duos in film history; The best action films in the modern age; How action sequences are edited; How to keep the attention of an audience; How to watch and (really) appreciate a film; Musicals, then and now; If we are at a low ebb of creativity; Why we should all go back and watch “the classics”; How to become fully cultured in the arts; Where to view the oldies; Television v. Movies; The Sopranos; Succession; Breaking Bad; Aristotle and Fred Astair; Katherine Hepburn and Gene Kelly; and MUCH MORE! Who would Travis Bickle– the protagonist of the 1976 film Taxi Driver – be today? That question sparked the new novel by Priya Guns, Your Driver Is Waiting. It follows Damani, a queer Tamil ride-share driver who is struggling to pay her bills while people on the street around her protest for cause after cause that she can't seem to keep track of. Then she meets Jolene, who is the epitome of the privilege Damani does not have. As Guns tells NPR's Scott Simon, it's a relationship that forces her protagonist to reckon with her own preconceptions of wealth and whiteness.

What can be said about one of THE most iconic movies of the past 50 years which hasn't been said already? Well you probably know that it was directed by Martin Scorsese, one of our greatest living American filmmakers. And you probably also know it stars the legendary Robert DeNiro in one of his most iconic roles playing Travis Bickle, the titular taxi driver. You might also know that it was also written by the renowned writer/director Paul Shrader who would go on to craft other iconic films including American Gigolo and Affliction, along with several other collaborations with Scorsese. You probably already have an idea that it tells the story of an Vietnam veteran, disgruntled cab driver who eventually finds himself on a mission to "clean up the streets" of mid '70's New York City in his own unique way of course. Whatever you might know regardless, it's never a bad time to revisit this classic film which has inspired millions of imitators since its release......all pretending to be tough staring in a mirrow, uttering, "You talkin' to me??" Totalement incognito !

While cinema has offered him no shortage of characters to relate to, there was one character that Elliott related to as a teenager that, for him, represents the very things he is most happy to have grown beyond. Born in Manhattan in New York City, De Niro studied acting at HB Studio, Stella Adler Conservatory, and Lee Strasberg's Actors Studio. His first major role was in Greetings (1968) and gained recognition with his role as a baseball player in the sports drama Bang the Drum Slowly (1973). His first collaboration with Scorsese was Mean Streets (1973), where he played small-time criminal "Johnny Boy". Stardom followed with his role as young Vito Corleone in Francis Ford Coppola's crime epic The Godfather Part II (1974), which won De Niro the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. For his portrayal of Travis Bickle in Taxi Driver (1976) and a soldier in the Vietnam War drama The Deer Hunter (1978), he earned two nominations for the Academy Award for Best Actor. Richie Stotts was a founding guitarist of the Plasmatics. Taking inspiration from Travis Bickle in Taxi Driver, he sported an enormous mohawk. Richie would also cross dress in various costumes like a nurse uniform, or a french maid dress. He did this In an effort to keep up with his constantly outrageous bandmate Wendy O. Williams. After leaving the Plasmatics in 1984, Richie pursued a solo career with his band King Flux and then went back to school where he eventually earned a graduate degree in Geology from Indiana University. Fun fact, Richie appears in a brief cameo in 9½ Weeks. He is the guy with the blonde mohawk and chainsaw tattoo.
