Elana Levin from Graphic Policy Radio returns to the show for a deep dive into the second wave of Ska music, a brief but influential era when black and white UK musicians fused Jamaican dance music of the sixties into punk and new wave music of the seventies to create a sound that would further revolutionize American popular music in the nineties. The modern ska genre gets made fun of a lot (mozzarella sticks, anyone?) but Elana will have you know that ska music is not a joke. In an 18-month period, 2 Tone Records, an indie label founded by the keyboardist from The Specials, Jerry Dammers, took over the UK pop charts with major distribution support from Chrysalis Records. In the wake of the election of Margaret Thatcher and the rise of white nationalists taking advantage of national economic malaise, a musical rebuke of these trends came from bands in the town of Coventry, offering alternative visions of racial harmony and anti-fascist songs you could dance to. The 1981 concert documentary Dance Craze, recently restored, captures the 2 Tone bands performing in their prime. We discuss the evolution of ska, pay tribute to some of the top groups of the Second Wave Ska era including The Selecter, Madness, Bad Manners and The Specials and bid farewell to their lead singer the late great Terry Hall, whose passing last year inspired this episode. Jon Wurster started playing drums in Superchunk in the early 90s. He currently plays drums in The Mountain Goats and with Bob Mould. He also famously played the character Ronald Thomas Clontle on The Best Show with Tom Scharpling and declared that Madness invented ska! And Jon certainly jokes around about ska a lot, but when he was a teenager, he really loved the 2 Tone ska bands like The Specials and English Beat. He was also a big fan of The Hooters during their early 80s ska phase. And more recently, Jon skanked and played tambourine on stage during the infamous Ska No Children incident. (Sad Snack opened for The Mountain Goats in San Francisco and played their ska cover of "No Children.") We bring Jon on today to talk about ska. He tells us that he used to practice drums to the Dance Craze soundtrack. We talk about his connection to the band Dead Milkmen. (Amongst other things, he booked their first show!) We discuss his nickname Johnny Earthshoe and we talk about two key shows he attended with The Police. (The Specials and Rhoda Dakar were at one of them) He also tells us about missing his high school prom for The Meatmen, Ska band The Pressure Boys' connection to Superchunk, and we try to figure out the name of the ska artist that was featured on a DVD he owns (It turns out it was King Django)  Support the show

Only a handful of bands made up the 2 Tone era of ska in late 70s England. Today, we bring on Rhoda Dakar, the singer of The Bodysnatchers, an all-female ska band that released 2 singles on the 2 Tone record label before breaking up. The band also recorded a few Peel Sessions and were featured on Dance Craze. Though short-lived, The Bodysnatchers were an important band and are still loved by many to this day. Rhoda also sang on the Specials' song "I Can't Stand It" (A really cool duet with Terry Hall), and was part of Jerry Dammers' Special AKA project. Their In The Studio record took 2 years to record. Rhoda tells us about "I Can't Stand It" and what it was like to work on In The Studio. (It was no fun!) We also talk about Rhoda's pre-Bodysnatchers years of being a punk kid and seeing Iggy Pop and Lou Reed, becoming friends with The Sex Pistols' Paul Cook and Steve Jones, and how she tried (and failed) to sneak into a Roxy Music concert in 1973. She tells us what it was like to work with The Interrupters on their most recent record, how she finally got to perform at the Brixton Academy Theater and the role that The Pogues' Shane MacGowan had in her joining The Bodysnatchers. She talks about writing "Ruder than You" with scenester Gaz Mayall (son of British blues legend John Mayall), playing on the Seaside Tour with The Specials and the Go Go's, and we talk about the legacy of her song The Boiler.  Support the show

‘Create Incredible''s latest guest is Doug Weir, who supervises film remastering and restoration at the BFI and was a key figure in releasing a recently restored version of the concert documentary 'Dance Craze' (1981), bringing to life footage of some of the most iconic British musical figures, like Madness and The Specials.   Two tone was a movement in the late 1970s born out of regional British cities under a period of economic turmoil, and was a take on the Ska music brought over by Jamaican immigrants in the 60s.    Doug takes us through the almost investigative like journey he underwent to put this film together with R3store studios and the joy he felt at seeing an audience finally dance along to this joyous piece of history at its premiere.   We also talk about why it so important to understand what the original film maker intended, Scotland's film heritage, classism in the industry, and the future of restoration.   Follow us for more on   Instagram   Twitter   Facebook   Linkedin

The shocking death of Terry Hall at the end of 2022 sent Pop Screen back to this document of him in his prime: Dance Craze, a relentlessly energetic concert film showcasing all the greats from the first wave of British ska. As well as Hall with The Specials, there are classic performances from Madness, The Beat, The Selecter, The Bodysnatchers and Bad Manners: an unmissable line-up by anyone's standards. Neglected for decades, Dance Craze is about to get a spiffy BFI Blu-Ray release, but before that Mick and Graham are here to discuss the legacy of Hall and The Specials, as well as this era of ska in general. We also find time to explain why 2-Tone Records was the exact opposite of Apple, imagine a parallel universe version of this film where Rhoda Dakar makes a big alteration to the set list, and explain why The Beat are kind of like a Portuguese Man o' War. Enjoy yourself, it really is later than you think. We don't have to work, 'cause there's no, no work to do, but we do provide an awful lot of content on our Patreon including a monthly bonus episode of this podcast. The next one, about the lost tATu film You and I, is out in a fortnight - but before that, there'll be a new episode of our movie miscellany podcast Last Night..., more reviews of classic Asian cinema in Unseen Asia and Graham's randomly selected Doctor Who reviews. The Uptones made big decisions--spontaneously. This is how guitarist Eric Din describes the group's career. Formed in 1981 in Berkeley, California as young teenagers in love with all things 2 Tone ska, The Uptones took the bay area by storm IMMEDIATELY with packed shows with lines out the door. They got their songs into heavy rotation on the radio by walking into the station and handing the DJs their demo recordings! But the band could never land a contract. Some of that could have been due to how quickly they were willing to completely shift gears and not be predictable.By 1987 the band called it quits, but reunited in 1989 at Gilman and then in 1990 for the Earth Day ska festival. The next time they played was in 2002, effectively missing the entire Third Wave US Ska boom. Today we talk to two members of The Uptones: Eric Din (Guitarist) and Paul Jackson (Trumpet, Keys) They tell us the important influence they got from repeated views of Dance Craze at UC Theatre in Berkeley (With copious out-of-control dancing), as well as getting to see English Beat in their prime. They tell us about opening for the big names in New Wave at the time: R.E.M., Oingo Boingo, UB40, The Go-Go's, Madness and Billy Idol. And they tell us about the time Fishbone showed up at their rehearsal space to hang out.  Eric and Paul also tell us about working with Rancid in the 90s. Eric co-wrote a handful of songs with Tim Armstrong, and Paul Jackson played the organ on "Time Bomb." Yes, that's his solo you've heard a thousand times on the radio. They also tell us how a young Jesse Michaels (Operation Ivy) used to stage dive at Uptones shows in the 80s. All of this is a part of the ups and downs of the bay area's very first ska band, The Uptones.  Support the show

The 1980s were headed into frightening times politically. The threat of war and potential nuclear conflict was pervasive. So naturally music would reflect the times, right? Sure thing....Bette Davis Eyes, Nine To Five (Morning Train), This Ole' House, You Weren't In Love With Me, and Just The Two Of Us were what people were buying – they reflect the times, right? Welcome to episode 96 of See Hear Podcast. Okay, okay.....I loaded up some songs that were the antithesis of the films under question, but just wanted to make a point that what was popular in the mainstream was still a long way from the more edgy music that rock fans were taking joy and catharsis in. While a lot of the new wave of music wasn't necessarily focusing on the fears of the world, its often jittery nature and aggressive sounds surely reflected the state of the world (that's my theory and I'm sticking with it). Tim and Bernie look at a pair of films released in 1981. For the main part, they discuss Urgh! A Music War, a concert film showing the diversity of the “new wave” / post punk bands of the era. How else are you going to find a connection between Klaus Nomi, XTC, Gary Numan and The Cramps? It's a great time capsule of the era showing that musicians didn't choose (at least at first) to play it safe, but still found varying levels of success. They also look at a film more musically focused called Dance Craze – a concert film featuring a range of bands from the British ska revival of the late 70s / early 80s. While any of these bands could have easily fit into Urgh! A Music War, it's great that Dance Craze exists as a companion piece. Later in the show, I speak with director and friend of the show, Skizz Cyzyk about a documentary he's been working off and on for many years called Urgh! Revisited. Acknowledging that there's not much information out there about U!AMW, Skizz has interviewed a range of musicians from the original film about their recollections of the era, and how the film got made. Hopefully, he gets to finish it and put some perspective on a cherished film without much documented history. Our huge thanks to Skizz for joining us. Amidst the ongoing crush of anti-Asian violence in America, Producer James turns to a peresonal source of restoration: ska music (yes, that ska music). When he was a teenager, the do-it-yourself ska scene — and an indie record label called Asian Man — taught him to take racism seriously, embrace the road less traveled, and never wait for anyone else's approval to be himself. But as James starts connecting with all of the Asian American ska fans he's met over the past few years, he also starts to question how much his own memories are wrapped in a black-and-white-checkered blanket of nostalgia. Eventually, these connections all lead to Mike Park, Korean American founder and still-only-employee of Asian Man Records — and Jer Hunter, a younger Black and queer ska musician who's carrying the torch for ska music as a home for anti-racist activism. And the more these conversations peel away the layers of nostalgia surrounding ska, the more James believes that this oft-misunderstood subculture has something real to offer in a world that can feel like it's crumbling beneath our feet. Starting the next dance craze is not an easy task. I looked into it and studied all the angles. My spirit got broken though after many friends pointed out that though my intentions of making one happen may be pure, eventually, the line dance crowd would appropriate it.   "Wait. People still line dance?" "Yes," I was informed. "And now they do it to Kid Rock." That killed whatever idea I had for trying to get a new dance craze starting right then and there. On this episode, I focus on the story behind the 1990 live compilation album NYC SKA LIVE.   It's hard to believe its been 30 years since it was recorded and released. The NYC SKA LIVE concert was originally organized by Moon Records so that the crop of bands then on the NYC ska scene could be filmed by director Joe Massot for New York City Ska Craze, a planned sequel to his 2 Tone era film Dance Craze released in 1981.  The show was taped live at the Cat Club, which was located on 13th Street and Fourth Avenue in Manhattan on March 26th, 1990.  The dawn of the 90s NYC ska scene was marked by the release of the Toasters third full-length album 'This Gun For Hire' -- the first without co-front men Sean Dinsmore and Lionel Bernard who had left and signed a record deal as The Unity 2 -- and the New York Citizen's seminal 'Stranger Things Have Happened' EP which it can be argued was the first American ska album to feature ska core.  Don't believe me? Give “Hell Town” a listen. Nearly five years on from the release of the N.Y. Beat: Hit & Run compilation which captured the sound of mid-80's New York City ska, NYC SKA LIVE documents the evolution of New York City ska into a diverse, post-2-Tone mix of sounds with more of an emphasis on roots reggae, traditional ska, rocksteady and dancehall reggae. While The Toasters and The New York Citizens are evolving sound wise, newer bands including my band Bigger Thomas, King Django's post-Boilers band Skinnerbox, The Steadys, Skadanks and Long Island's Scofflaws all offer their unique takes on American ska at the start of the 1990's.Please note: The music clips included in this podcast fall under the “Fair Use Doctrine” as defined by Section 107 of the Copyright Act. As I worked on researching and writing Ska Boom: An American Ska & Reggae Oral History, two films were mentioned by many of the musicians I interviewed: one was the 1972 Jamaican crime drama “The Harder They Come” staring Jimmy Cliff.  The other was the 1981 2 Tone concert film "Dance Craze". They both play an important role in the development of a uniquely American version of ska and reggae and in this episode I'll shed more light on the making of Dance Craze, including its origins, how it was filmed and its historical impact.  This episode also features commentary from the Dance Craze cinematographer Joe Dunton as well as interviews I conducted for the book with members of Fishbone, Skankin' Pickle and Let's Go Bowling on how the film influenced them .

Whatever the confluence of unfortunate events that caused those on board the Mary Celeste to abandon her, one can surmise two possible final fates for them: either they perished in a maelstrom of sudden violence, or they died a languishing death of attrition. These two perils every sailor must acknowledge for the sea is a merciless mistress, but too cruel to imagine for the likes of a mother and child. If you wish to contemplate the mystery of the Mary Celeste, you would do well to remember the saying, the sea does not give up her secrets and as we've seen, she will often not part with her dead.
