Send us a textOn this episode of the Speaking of … College of Charleston podcast, in honor of Valentine's Day, we ask Colleen Glenn, associate professor and director of the College's Film Studies Program, to weigh in on her favorite romantic movies. We discuss some of the classes she teaches at the College, including Dreams and Movies and The Myth of the Road in American Cinema. As we shift to the upcoming holiday, she highlights her favorite romantic dramas, including Casablanca, An Affair to Remember, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, as well as romantic comedies like The Shop Around the Corner and Moonstruck.Glenn also talks about how rom-coms have evolved and now include a wider variety of perspectives.“Films have become more diverse in terms of representation,” says Glenn. “We have better representation of people of color – of different races and ethnicities – on screen today, and we also see different gender orientations and sexual orientations. So, the classic rom-com formula of 'boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy wins girl back' might now be 'boy meets boy' or 'girl-meets-girl.'"Glenn encourages moviegoers to watch movies in the theater instead of on their devices to get the full experience. She says romantic movies are just one of the many cultural systems that facilitate the “happily ever after” myth of love – and, if we're going to blame rom-coms, we have to throw music, theater and poetry into the mix. What's your favorite romantic movie to watch on Valentine's Day? Words like 'legend', 'icon' and 'star' were created to describe Mae West! Our guest, Michael Gregg Michaud has written his third Mae West book, Mae West And Her Adonises which focuses on her revolutionary 50s nightclub act featuring a chorus line of muscle men. Mae set the stage for the male revue, now a staple of Vegas bachelorette parties and girls' nights out! Michael's book is packed with photos, press interviews, Mae's wickedly quippy and saucy one-liners and details about an act that was literally stopping traffic in every town it visited. Mae's first and only love was the stage but much like any episode of The Bachelorette, the Adonises found themselves lost in love for her and competitively pining for her attention, ultimately coming to blows when Chuck Krauser threw a punch at Mickey Hargitay. Hearts and jaws were broken and a high profile court case ensued. Mae was the O.G. of branding, literally carving her image out of strategically erected costumes, padding, wigs, headdresses and heals. She wrote and produced her own content, walking right up to the wall of naughty and bawdy but never crossing into tasteless. She artfully tap-danced around censors and male industry leaders, knowing innately what her audience would embrace. Mae famously jabbed and feuded with Marilyn Monroe, Jayne Mansfield and W.C. Fields and maintained lifelong friendships with Louise Beavers, her boxer buddies, and the animals she adored. All this Plus Fritz and Weezy are recommending Bad Monkey on Apple + and Wicked Little Lies on Netflix. Path Points of Interest:Michael Gregg Michaud Michael Gregg Michaud on AmazonMae West and Her AdonisesMichael Gregg Michaud on FacebookMichael Gregg Michaud on InstagramMae West on IMDBMae West Stage Show - 1957Bad Monkey on Apple +Wicked Little Letters on NetflixGift of DemocracyMedia Path Podcast

EPISODE 36 - “Classic Hollywood Clones: The Remaking of a Movie Star” - 05/20/2024 SHOW NOTES:  They say that imitation is the highest form of flattery. That may not be the case when it came to the star system of old Hollywood. When an actor like CLARK GABLE or GRETA GARBO or ROCK HUDSON emerged as a star, every studio in town tried to capitalize and create their own version. For every MARILYN MONROE, there's a dozen CLEO MOOREs. Often studios would groom an actor with similar looks and skills to be a “threat” to bigger stars who become difficult to work with, or get older and less appealing, or refuse to appear in assigned films. Most of the stars groomed as a threat to a bigger star usually faded into obscurity, but others learned to get out of the looming shadow of the big star and carve out a career of their own. So this week, we pay tribute to the stars who got their starts by being groomed to replace another star. We're doing things a little differently this episode. There are still spoilers ahead! Frankenstein is considered by many people to be a solid first choice for the first science fiction novel. (Before you start jumping up and down in disgust, yes, there are many stories from the 1600s and even ancient tales which are considered to be strong contenders for the first written sci-fi story. That does not take away from the influence of Mary Shelley.) In 1816 the teenager* went on holiday to Switzerland and came up with the character of Frankenstein and his monster which would then develop into a novel titled Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus. Over 200 years later there are still films being made based on the characters from the book. In this episode, we touch upon James Whale's 1931 Frankenstein film but look at the origins of the story, examine why its monster has such a long lasting legacy, and why these stories resonate with us still. For full detailed shownotes please click the episode at www.everyscififilm.com/watch and scroll down. The expertsRoger Luckhurst is a Professor at Birkbeck, University of London. When TVs entered living rooms and Cinerama lit up movie screens, teens went nuts for Troy Donahue. Born Merle Johnson Jr. he was discovered at The Golden Pheasant restaurant in Calabasas by bigwigs, William Asher and James Sheldon. Signed to Rock Hudson's manager Henry Wilson, Troy won the role of Johnny in A Summer Place and was a teen idol by the morning after opening night. A screen dream, Troy's reality was a nightmare. Author Michael Gregg Michaud has written books about Sal Mineo, Mae West, Marlene Dietrich and Diane Mcbain. Michael joins us to discuss his biography, Inventing Troy Donahue: The Making of a Movie Star.Long intrigued by the darker reality behind Hollywood's seemingly perfect presentation, Michael helps us understand the challenges that shaped Troy's life. He lost his father at 14 and undiagnosed dyslexia adversely affected his grades and his sense of worth. Troy began drinking in middle school. He says he was drunk all the way through his two TV series, Surfside 6 and Hawaiian Eye and unable to master new lines because of his learning disability and his inebriation. By the time he made Paul Springs Weekend, he was downing three codeine laced aspirins with a pint of vodka, followed by four lines of cocaine just to get himself up and out the door. This regimen was quickly followed by a career on the skids, financial ruin and four failed marriages. Troy's charm, humor, wisdom and gratitude pulled him through recovery and bonded him for life with ex-wives, girlfriends and screen partners, Suzanne Pleshette, Sandra Dee, Connie Stevens, Diane McBain and Angie Dickinson. We also learn from Michael about his other books, including a brand new one on Mae West's nightclub act. THE COLOR OF MONEY and SEA OF LOVEDirectors with a day job for season 10? What about the most important person behind the scenes NOT the director? The writer.RICHARD PRICE was a renowned author before trying his hand at screenwriting, which resulted in a "calling card" script that everyone loved but no one wanted to make into a movie. Classic Hollywood. As we discuss going over Price's career, he eventually ended up adapting the novel The Color of Money (1986), the sequel to The Hustler. Director Martin Scorsese (what ever happened to that guy?) and Price ended up chucking Walter Tevis' source novel and what we see onscreen is mostly Price, a pool hall road trip with Tom Cruise, Paul Newman and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio (no joke, what happened to her?). How the writing of this film informed Price as an author is almost as fascinating as the movie itself. We get into it. In 1989 Price's script for Sea of Love was an immensely important film for star Al Pacino, who'd been in actor jail since the disastrous Revolution (1985), which was preceded by a number of financial disappointments . Pacino has since cemented himself as one of the all time greats but in 1989 a lot of people thought he was washed - going through the motions and box office poison. Sea of Love reestablished Pacino for the big screen and still stands as one of his best roles and maybe sexiest? Has Pacino ever been sexy?  Price's script is so good it almost seems embarrassed to have a serial killer plot and we get into that dynamic.Screenwriter and frequent guest Erik and Ken geek out over both films and Price in general. We talk a lot about directors on this show (many would say too much) so it is fitting we give a little love to the lonely art of writing and the weird art of writing for film. And the victims of abuse rarely spoke out -- when they did, they risked the ruination of their careers (or worse). In 2017 this began to change.
