The Martians are coming! Don't trust anyone! So it goes when a young boy descends into a nightmare of tentacled alien heads, mind-controlled parents, and Martians in green pajamas. And it's all shot in surreal, colorful imagery. Grab your telescopes, get in your tank, and cover your necks - we're digging into this seminal, yet underseen, sci-fi film that influenced the likes of Spielberg, Scorsese, Dante, Cameron, and more. Then, if that wasn't enough, Peter Lorre trims his lilacs on the Poverty Row Picture Show covering the John Carradine classic, Bluebeard (1944). What a time to be alive! Nathan and Ryan take a deep dive into Tobe Hooper's 1986 remake of Invaders from Mars! This ‘80s reimagining of the 1953 sci-fi classic brings eerie paranoia, practical creature effects, and that distinct Hooper weirdness. Is it an overlooked gem or a misfire from the golden age of practical effects? Tune in as the Drive-In Double Feature duo dissects the Martian mayhem, creepy teacher transformations, and nostalgic ‘80s charm of this cult flick.

It's a monster mash on this fresh from the grave episode of DEATH BY DVD all about FRANKY AND HIS PALS, directed by Gerald Cormier. What is Franky And His Pals, you ask? Well, let us copy and paste the write up from the official Severinfilms.com website where this movie is available to purchase, because we are to lazy to write something up ourselves and theirs is way better : From the deepest, darkest depths of the shot-on-video vaults… Hidden from view for 30 years… All your favorite movie monsters are back… And they're ready to party like it's 1990! Franky, Drak, Wolfy, Mummy and Humper – the horny hunchback – descend on the tiny mining town of French Gulch in search of lost gold, but it's Halloween Night, and the monsters soon find themselves caught up in the debaucherous festivities of the local townsfolk. Will Franky and His Pals find the gold? Will they learn the ways of love? Will Drak quench his thirst for human blood? Just how explosive is Franky's flatulence? What's that Mad Scientist tinkering on out in his barn? What the hell is a pee-pee? And does any of it really matter? Directed by veteran grindhouse and adult film producer Gerald Cormier (TERROR CIRCUS a.k.a. BARN OF THE NAKED DEAD, 101 ACTS OF LOVE) and seldom-seen beyond the shelves of small-town video shops, this bizarro monster-comedy is finally being resurrected on DVD and is positively exploding with spooky Special Features! And since I copy and pasted all that from Severin, the least I can do is also add the link so you can buy the movie : TAP HERE FOR THE MOVIEDive into the monster mash with your host Harry-Scott Sullivan and kick back and relax with this hoot and an additional hollar of an episode. It's the end of Spooktober... nobody trusts anybody now and we're all very tired, as we chill out with the original prince of podcasting RJ MacReady and John Carpenter's frozen freakfest takes its rightful place in the pod pantheon. It's 1982's The Thing, directed by John Carpenter, written by Bill Lancaster, and starring Kurt Russell, Wilford Brimley, Keith David and Donald Moffat. An absolute masterclass in the art of practical make-up and on-camera special effects, it's a movie that still looks outstanding to this day, now 42 years after it hit the screen. Critics hated the film upon its release, accusing Carpenter of only being interested in pushing the limits of technical achievement, and slacking on character and story. While I'd take issue with the latter critique, the former is exactly what has made the movie an enduring favourite. As for its story, this is a scenario so rife with paranoia that it has since gone on to become a successful board game. Sadly, The Thing is not available to stream in Canada at the time of publication, but you can nab it on Blu-ray for $5 most places and it's well worth owning on physical media. Other works discussed in this episode include the Venom franchise, Invaders From Mars, Poltergeist, Transformers, Lover, Stalker, Killer, Sweet Bobby: My Catfish Nightmare, Paranormal Activity 2, Cloverfield, 10 Cloverfield Lane, Poltergeist III, Truth or Dare (2017), Death Becomes Her, Gladiator II, The X-Files, Lost, Severance, Clear and Present Danger, and Escape From New York. We'll be back next week to kick off No-Theme-ber, a lawless month where anything goes, as Roxy Fever's Jackson McDonald returns to the show with a redemption pick from his own collection, and to promote the new King Bob album Rookie available now wherever you get your music. He's making us circle back to Hitchcock with a classic mistaken identity thriller, 1959's North by Northwest, with Cary Grant and Eva Marie Saint. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

Known for scaring the socks of countless Baby Boomers during the 1950s, Invaders From Mars tells the story of starstruck David MacLean, the young sole witness of aliens noisily landing in his backyard in the wee hours of the morning. His father goes to investigate but is dragged beneath the sand, only to reemerge as a stiff, cold-hearted version of his father he's never met. As more and more friends and family members are changing, David tries to get help, but it's too impossible to believe! With a little help from a sympathetic doctor, a brilliant scientist, and the US army, he confronts the alien, but is it enough to survive and save his parents? Join Robin, Lisa, and their dad, Clark, as we discuss this nearly-forgotten gem.https://www.instagram.com/realoldreels/

Our special guest is here to share his amazing story of how he was abducted by aliens and given what he called "The Cosmic Code" that now allows him to predict the future with stunning accuracy!   Beyond the Secret is the fascinating autobiography of Dr. Louis Turi. It recounts his unusual life starting at birth in the Provence region of France, to his life in England and America. His experiences range from tragic to euphoric, mundane and miraculous, all of which have given him great compassion for his fellow humans. He explains metaphysical principles that apply to the different chapters of his life. There is much more in this life than the Law of Attraction. Other laws include metaphysical and cosmological aspects. It is an engaging read you will not be able to set down.   Alien abduction (also called abduction phenomenon, alien abduction syndrome, or UFO abduction) refers to the phenomenon of people reporting what they believe to be the real experience of being kidnapped by extraterrestrial beings and subjected to physical and psychological experimentation.[1] People claiming to have been abducted are usually called "abductees"[2] or "experiencers". Most scientists and mental health professionals explain these experiences by factors such as suggestibility (e.g. false memory syndrome), sleep paralysis, deception, and psychopathology.[3] Skeptic Robert Sheaffer sees similarity between some of the aliens described by abductees and those depicted in science fiction films, in particular Invaders From Mars (1953).[4] Typical claims involve forced medical examinations that emphasize the subject's reproductive systems.[5] Abductees sometimes claim to have been warned against environmental abuses and the dangers of nuclear weapons,[6] or to have engaged in interspecies breeding.[7]The contents of the abduction narrative often seem to vary with the home culture of the alleged abductee.[4] Unidentified flying objects(UFOs), alien abduction, and mind control plots can also be part of radical political apocalyptic and millenarian narratives.[8] Reports of the abduction phenomenon have been made all around the world, but are most common in English-speaking countries, especially the United States.[4] The first alleged alien abduction claim to be widely publicized was the Betty and Barney Hill abduction in 1961.[9] UFO abduction claims have declined since their initial surge in the mid-1970s and alien abduction narratives have found less popularity in mainstream media. Skeptic Michael Shermer proposed that the ubiquity of camera phones increases the burden of evidence for such claims, and may be a cause for their decline.[10]     Follow us on Instagram @mysteriousradio Follow us on TikTok mysteriousradioTikTok Follow us on Twitter @mysteriousradio Follow us on Pinterest pinterest.com/mysteriousradio Like us on Facebook Facebook.com/mysteriousradio   Want All Paranormal Episodes? WAR OF THE WORLDS (1953) and INVADERS FROM MARS (1953) are two of the most beloved of the dozens of science fiction movies from that paranoid Cold War decade. Author Mark Clark joins me to compare and contrast them as we look at the massive differences in scale, budget and point of view that give each film its unique feel. Recent Blu-Ray releases allow a fresh evaluation of these movies and we dig into them from angles both personal and societal. Spoilers rise from every sandpit, so be aware!   We tackle the magnificent WAR OF THE WORLDS first, examining the elements taken from the source novel as well as from the classic Orson Wells radio adaptation. We discuss the story structure and the cast of amazing character actors familiar at the time from both radio shows and film. Design concepts and the faint traces of the book's tripods are touched on before we dig into the film rushed to theaters to compete – INVADERS FROM MARS! The William Cameron Menzies production design is discussed as well as the ‘trashy science fiction magazines' that seemed to inspire some the incredible images. We argue a bit over our preferred length but both of us wish there was less military stock footage slowing things down. The alternate British ending is brought up and I detail how I wish the American version ended. We do go on!  If you have thoughts on either of these Martian invasion movies thebloodypit@gmail.com is the place to send them. Thank you for listening.

M-A-R-S, maniacs. We're talking another Tobe Hooper joint this week in the Cannon Films remake Invaders From Mars from 1986! Joining us is someone who literally wrote the book on Tobe Hooper: Scout Tafoya! He's the author of Cinemaphagy: On the Psychedelic Classical Form of Tobe Hooper, as well as a filmmaker and critic for RogerEbert.com. While we learn a lot about the making of this film from Scout, we also discuss topics such as the short-lived Comedy Central sitcom That's My Bush, putting Certs in your coffee like normal humans do, and Mousehunt. Analog Jones starts another theme month with "it came from space." This week we watched another Tobe Hooper movie. Let's pop in a VHS and watch Invaders from Mars from 1986! Also, stay tuned to listen to us talk about Halloween Kills (2022) and Lord of the Rings: Ring of Powers (2022) Season 1.  Quick Facts Directed by Tobe Hooper Screenplay by Dan O'Bannon and Don Jakoby (Death Wish 3 and Vampires) Distributed by Cannon Pictures Released on June 6, 1986 Budget: $7 million Box Office: $4.9 million Starring Karen Black as Linda Magnuson (the school nurse) Hunter Carson as David Gardner Timothy Bottoms as George Gardner Laraine Newman as Ellen Gardner James Karen as General Climet Wilson Bud Cort as Nasa Scientist Louise Fletcher as Mrs. Mckeltch (Best known as Nurse Ratched in One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest) VHS Description Starring Karen Black, Hunter Carson, Timothy Bottoms, Laraine Newman, James Karen, Bud Cort, and Louise Fletcher. The classic ‘50s cold war sci-fi horror film is transformed into a monstrously gripping, modern special effects tour-de-force! Director Tobe Hooper (Poltergeist, Texas Chainsaw Massacre I, and II) brings his own uniquely spectacular vision to this masterful new version of everyone's favorite “alien invasion” tale! A courageous young boy battles the hideous Martians who have “taken over” his parents (Laraine Newman and Timothy Bottoms) – and who now threaten to subjugate the entire planet! Also caught up in the terrifying action are Oscar winner Louise Fletcher (One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest) and Karen Black (Easy Rider, Savage Dawn). Truly unearthly creature design and make-up techniques blend with the astonishing special visual effects of Academy Award winner John Dykstra (Star Wars). A breathtaking, pulse-pounding science fiction mind-blower! How to find Analog Jones Discuss these movies and more on our Facebook page.
