In this podcast we are tying into our Elaine May May conversations with a chat about a movie she co-wrote and for which she got an Oscar nomination too, namely Heaven Can Wait. Over the course of our conversation you will hear us try to figure out how and why this movie ended up as successful as it did, if it was a bellwether of the changing times suggesting that the world had had enough of the New Hollywood grime and whether it was a flash in the pan that couldn't have worked at any other point in time. We also try to find traces of Elaine May's DNA in the script, identify the influence of one Buck Henry and wonder if there were simple ways to make this body swap underdog sports rom-com Hitchcock murder plot movie a bit simpler and funnier. World War II radio operator interred in Wappingers Falls As the World War II bomber Heaven Can Wait was hit by enemy fire off the Pacific island of New Guinea on March 11, 1944, the co-pilot managed a final salute to flyers in an adjacent plane before crashing into the water. All 11 men aboard were killed. Their remains, deep below the vast sea, were designated as non-recoverable. Yet four crew members' remains are beginning to return to their hometowns after a remarkable investigation by family members and a recovery mission involving elite Navy divers who descended 200 feet in a pressurized bell to reach the sea floor. Staff Sgt. Eugene Darrigan, the 26-year-old the radio operator, was buried with military honors and community support on Saturday (May 24) at the Church of St. Mary in his hometown of Wappingers Falls, more than eight decades after leaving behind his wife and baby son. The bombardier, 2nd Lt. Thomas "Toby" Kelly, was buried Monday in Livermore, California, where he grew up in a ranching family. The remains of the pilot, 1st Lt. Herbert Tennyson, and navigator, 2nd Lt. Donald Sheppick, will be interred in the coming months. The ceremonies are happening 12 years after one of Kelly's relatives, Scott Althaus, set out to solve the mystery of where exactly the plane went down. "I'm just so grateful," he said. "It's been an impossible journey - just should never have been able to get to this day. And here we are, 81 years later." March 11, 1944 The Army Air Forces plane nicknamed Heaven Can Wait was a B-24 with a cartoon pin-up angel painted on its nose. It was on a mission to bomb Japanese targets. Other flyers on the mission were not able to spot survivors. Their wives, parents and siblings were of a generation that tended to be tight-lipped in their grief. But the men were sorely missed. Sheppick, 26, and Tennyson, 24, each left behind pregnant wives who would sometimes write them two or three letters a day. Darrigan also was married, and had been able to attend his son's baptism while on leave. A photo shows him in uniform, smiling as he holds the boy. Darrigan's wife, Florence, remarried but quietly held on to photos of her late husband, as well as a telegram informing her of his death. Tennyson's wife, Jean, lived until age 96 and never remarried. "She never stopped believing that he was going to come home," said her grandson, Scott Jefferson. Memorial Day 2013 As Memorial Day approached 12 years ago, Althaus asked his mother for names of relatives who died in World War II. Althaus, a political science and communications professor at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, became curious while researching World War II casualties for work. His mother gave him the name of her cousin Thomas Kelly, who was 21 when he was reported missing in action. Althaus recalled that as a boy, he visited Kelly's memorial stone, which has a bomber engraved on it. He began reading up on the lost plane. "It was a mystery that I discovered really mattered to my extended family," he said. With help from other relatives, he analyzed historical documents, photos and eyewitness recollections. They weighed sometimes conflicting accounts of where the plane went down. After a four-year investigation, Althaus wrote a report concluding that the bomber likely crashed off Awar Point in what is now Papua New Guinea. The report was shared with Project Recover, a nonprofit committed to finding and repatriating missing American service members and a partner of the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA). A team from Project Recover, led by researchers from Scripps Institution of Oceanography, located the debris field in 2017 after searching nearly 10 square miles of seafloor. The DPAA launched its deepest-ever underwater recovery mission in 2023. A Navy dive team recovered dog tags, including Darrigan's, partially corroded with the name of his wife, Florence, as an emergency contact. Kelly's ring was recovered. The stone was gone, but...
Based upon the comic strip created in 1931 by Chester Gould, this eye-popping live-action adaptation was long planned by Oscar-winning director Warren Beatty (Reds, Heaven Can Wait) who also elected to star as the titular square-jawwed crime fighter sporting a bright yellow jacket. Finally green-lit and released by Disney in the wake of the breakout success the prior year of Tim Burton's Batman, the studio was hoping that it could duplicate the mega-blockbuster success of that comic book adaptation, backing its release with loads of marketing hype AND three different soundtrack albums including an assortment of original songs written by Tony-winning songwriting stage legend Stephen Sondheim (West Side Story, Into the Woods) and performed one of its co-stars....that would be Madonna who played Breathtless Mahoney, who is also a key femme fatale for the story. She is joined by completely STACKED cast by Paul Sorvino, Mandy Patinkin, Glenne Headley, Charlie Korsmo, Charles Durning, James Caan, Dustin Hoffman, AND Al Pacino who plays the film's main villain Big Boy Caprice. Alas the film did solid box office but did not live up to the Batman-level hype...though it DID set a record for most Oscars won by a comic book adaptation with three for Best Makeup, Best Original Song, and Best Art Direction. This record of three Oscars would not be matched for another 28 years until it was eventually tied by another Disney comic book release, Black Panther. Interview by Kris Peters For more than three decades, the name Chocolate Starfish has been synonymous with Australian rock music, with singer Adam Thompson one of the most engaging and enigmatic frontmen to ever grace the stage in this country. Despite the success of Chocolate Starfish and the constant touring that comes with it, Thompson has also found time to branch into other areas of the artistic world, most notably the Chocolate Starfish Bat Out Of Hell Show, where, obviously, the band performs the classic Meatloaf hits from that album and beyond. While not exactly a new project for Thompson, it is one that is close to his heart, and he has embraced the role as if it were his own - and God help anyone who tries to say it's not… This year Bat Out Of Hell - Return will see Chocolate Starfish traversing the country once more, but this time there's going to be strings attached. Literally. The electrifying show that continues to thrill audiences everywhere will be augmented by the stirring swells of a six-piece string section, escalating the rich production to mesmerizing heights. Featuring the classic album in its entirety, Bat Out of Hell - The Return promises everything audiences have come to know and love about a Starfish show – it's an entertainment experience not to be missed. As a prelude to the main event, the band will be supported by a specially curated trio performing Chocolate Starfish favourites, starring Kate Daley and her dazzling vocals, Peter Mitchell on saxophone and Les Gyori on violin. The star of the show, Adam Thompson, sat down with HEAVY to talk about Bat Out of Hell - The Return and more. "We had a lot of success a couple of years ago with the Bat Out Of Hell show, and we just thought, look, if we're going to do it again, let's take it to another level," he began. "About a year and a half ago I did a George Michael show at the Myer Music Bowl with David Campbell and a few others, and it was with an orchestra and I just loved it. I said to the boys, why don't we up the ante and see if we can use a string section because it's so made for those sorts of shows. I know Meatloaf back in the day did several of them, and that album is just made for strings. "It's an eight-piece string section," he continued, "and the dynamics of the performance will change because previously we only had synth for something like For Crying Out Loud or Heaven Can Wait. For some of those slower songs you'll have that lush tone that the string section brings. So just to feel that groan of the cello on (sings) 'now the chilly Californian wind, is blowing down our bodies again…' oh man, it's just going to be goosebumps, right?" In the full interview, Adam spoke more about the Bat Out of Hell show along with works by Jim Steinman, enhanced by the inclusion of a string section. Adam shared his excitement about the tour, reflecting on the success of previous orchestral performances and the necessary mental and physical preparation for the run of shows, which will travel from Melbourne to Perth. He emphasized the importance of pacing and structure in performances, particularly with the addition of string players, while maintaining his unique style. The conversation also highlighted the growing audience for Chocolate Starfish, especially among families, and the positive ticket sales, with some shows nearly sold out. We discussed fans reactions to Adam's personality shining through during his Meatloaf performance, the importance of sprinkling his own DNA through the show, and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

In what way is beef in UFOs religious-like? Is there evidence for collective visions of these objects and entities, or rather for their objective reality? In what way could the experience have elements of both? In this episode we have the ever more mainstream story of UFO experiences to assess; Not necessarily the important questions around the existence of the phenomenon, which the office of the US director of National Intelligence confirmed in an official 2021 report that they were, in fact, a ‘population of objects' (see show notes below)- but rather the belief in the phenomenon, in 2008 polled at around %37 of Americans, but by no means confined to the US. This widespread belief, along with less ridiculed beliefs bolstered by the high probability of extraterrestrial civilisations more advanced than our own existing out there in the cosmos, has had a huge sociological and cultural influence on western society. So in this episode I want to put into a sociological context all of this quasi-religious belief; understand the role of our perception of technology; get our heads around a rare example of a modern myth forming in real time; look at the ways a phenomenon can be both physical and psychological at the same time; and examine various scientific, academic and even philosophical doors into this confounding phenomena that no matter how much the sceptics deny, just won't go away. So when we study belief we have to turn to a religious studies specialist, and who better to call on than Professor of Religious studies at the University of North Carolina, Diana Pasulka. She's also the author of 3 books, “Heaven Can Wait”, a book about purgatory, “American Cosmic” on scientists who believe in UFO's, and her new 2023 book “Encounters” on multi-disciplinary academic approaches to the UFO phenomenon and experiences with non-human intelligence. Don't forget listeners, that we talk about all the science in more detail with Stanford medical School's immunologist, pathologist and inventor Garry Nolan in this series so check that out too. What we discuss:00:00 Intro.13:08 Meaningful events propel people towards religious belief.21:30 Heidegger's warning about underestimating the influence of technology on our culture.27:00 Plato's “Allegory of the Cave” - A just government and the control of information.34:40 Nietzsche, the risk of assigning causal power for synchronicities to higher powers.44:00 Perspective change: The creation of a modern myth, to a real physical phenomenon.45:50 Looking for UFO crash parts in the desert with Garry Nolan, taken blindfolded by a Space Force scientist.49:00 The ‘Antenna' hypothesis: the brain as a receiver and transmitter.56:00 Physical data analysed by top scientists, and government “management” of information.01:01:00 Where the physical and non-physical meet: idealism or VR hypotheses.01:05:00 Humans may be a sophisticated type of biotechnology.01:06:00 The use of intuition protocols to find technological solutions: intention and visualisation.01:11:30 New Encounters book: a “reorientation”.01:14:00 Iya Whitely: validating pilots experiences. This week I'm reading from Dr. Diana Walsh Pasulka's book 'Encounters: Experiences with Nonhuman Intelligences'.A revolution is underway. For the first time in human history, we are at the cusp of experiencing contact with nonhuman life-forms of all kinds due to technological innovations and research into the experiences of people at the forefront of this development. In Encounters, author D.W. Pasulka takes readers to the forefront of this revolution, sharing the work of experts across a spectrum of fields who are working to connect humanity with unknown life-forms.Most of us have visions of nonhuman encounters that are shaped far more by Hollywood than they are informed by the current research. Encounters rewrites our visions of nonhuman species by featuring the work and stories of contemporary innovators who are rethinking our most basic assumptions about life and its manifestations beyond our experience. The author of American Cosmic, D.W. Pasulka is a professor of religion at UNC, Wilmington; her work as a scholar has given her the tools to systematically examine data that exceeds rational categories—exactly the skillset needed to parse the world of UFOs, angels, AI, dreams, and other dimensions, which exist at the edges of human understanding. Encounters is a riveting exploration of the leading science of nonhuman life and a bold glimpse of the future of humanity in a universe where we are far from alone.BioD. L. Pasulka is a professor of religious studies at the University of North Carolina, Wilmington.Works include American Cosmic, Heaven Can Wait, as well as two co-authored books about religion and technology. She is the author of academic essays, appears on podcasts, and presents her work internationally. In cooperation with the Vatican, she is the lead of the translation project of the canonization records of the saint, Joseph of Copertino.Dr. Pasulka's research spans Catholic history to modern day reports of UAPs and UFOs. American Cosmic has been featured in mainstream presses such as Vice, Vox, Fox News, Tank, The Los Angeles Review of Books, Publisher's Weekly, and Kirkus Reviews. Join Cheryl Lee - That Radio Chick on STILL ROCKIN' IT for news, reviews, music and interviews with some of our favourite Australian musicians. They say music has the power to heal, and who better to explore this truth than Adam Thompson from Chocolate Starfish, marking three decades of resonating chords and soulful lyrics. I was fortunate to sit across from Adam, the band's lead singer, who shared his journey of personal loss, the late discovery of his musical calling, and the raw emotions that have acted as the cornerstone for the band's electric live performances and unwavering fan connection. We were immersed in tales of how grief shaped a youth, finding solace in the lyrics of Meat Loaf's "Heaven Can Wait," and how such profound experiences have enriched Chocolate Starfish's ongoing vibrant tour life. With the stage set and microphones live, we navigated the emotional labyrinth of performing, where Adam revealed his own struggles with anxiety and depression, offering a candid look behind the curtain of a rockstar's life. We riffed on the inspiration drawn from the likes of Meatloaf, INXS, and Queen, and their role in molding Adam's commanding stage presence. As he shared insights into the transformative nature of music, not just as a healing force but as a conduit for controlling the stage with the prowess of legends like Freddie Mercury. Finally, Adam shone a light on the melodic path from the microphone to the heart. He spoke passionately about his philanthropic work with MusoMagic and MusicKarma, his dedication to fostering young talent, and their Cinderella-themed single supporting MND research. We wrapped up with his intimate reflections on songwriting, the solace found in meditation, and the role of fan relationships. Adam then signed off with a heartfelt tribute to Jamie Wilde, through a moving performance of "Cinderella," leaving us all with a poignant reminder of music's eternal imprint on our lives. Join us for this symphony of stories, and discover the beating heart behind the riffs and the man who brings the magic of Chocolate Starfish to life.Includes Songs:Meatloaf - Heaven Can WaitChocolate Starfish - You're So VainChocolate Starfish - What's UpMeatloaf - Bat out of HellElvis Presley - Can't Help Falling in LoveChocolate Starfish - Three WordsChocolate Starfish - CinderallaWhat have The Chocolate Starfish been up to lately … let's find out!Get out when you can, support local music and I'll see you down the front!!Visit: ThatRadioChick.com.au
In this week's MGM 1945 episode, a Vincente Minnelli double feature: The Clock, a wartime romantic drama with two very intense stars, Judy Garland and Robert Walker, that doubles as a love poem to New York City; and a Technicolor musical fantasy about, in Dave's words (more or less), "A woman who wants to bleep an angel," starring Lucille Bremer as the woman and Fred Astaire as the angel. And in Fear and Moviegoing in Toronto, four Lubitsch movies over two weekends: To Be or Not to Be, The Love Parade, Heaven Can Wait, and Ninotchka. Play "Masterpiece or Meh?" with Elise with these six movies, and hear Dave defend two "mehs" as "masterpieces"! (Or "meh-sterpieces"?) (No, "masterpieces"!) As you sort through your Thanksgiving leftovers and start your Christmas shopping, let Overlapping Dialogue serve the role of comforting holiday companion. We ring in the series of occasions with a pair of football movies that tug on the heartstrings- albeit in wildly different ways- with Heaven Can Wait and Friday Night Lights. But before they settle their respective differences on the gridiron, we as humble color commentators devour a full fledged meal with a Blue Plate Special lineup: listen as we discuss the latest edition of the Call of Duty franchise (Modern Warfare 3...again) and ponder what the yet-to-be-released Coyote vs. Acme and its stalled fate means for the future of the motion picture industry, as well as find theatrical solace with an unlikely trio of satisfying new releases in Anatomy of a Fall, The Holdovers, and Thanksgiving. Upon finally arriving to our pigskin-themed main event, we delight in the multi-hyphenate nature of the 1978 romantic comedy fantasy sports yarn and try and catch our breathes from the insistent, stifling DRAMA in all caps (no cap, fr fr) of the 2004 high school sports saga. Appropriately, we even enshrine one of this episode's subjects into our very own Hall of Fame, the Immune. This week we are VERY excitedly sniffing the one-off bespoke fragrances that @bedeauxx perfumer Amanda Beadle so thoughtfully created for @outspokenbeauty's kids, Poppy & Louis. (Seriously, though, how lucky are they?!) There's also a much-anticipated review of the NEW @fredericmalle fragrance by Jean-Claude Ellena, a sneaky sniff of the soon to be launched @parfumsdemarly, our time at THE rooftop perfume party of the summer (and an INCIDENT WITH A PINE NUT & SELFRIDGES BAG which reduced Nicola & Suzy to a giggling fit). September 29, 1986: By this point in time, nearly 2 years had passed since the release of Powerslave and nearly a year had passed since Live After Death was released, commemorating the World Slavery Tour of 1984-1985 that cemented IRON MAIDEN as one of the most legendary bands in all of metal. And just like with any other advancements forward impacting time and technology, SOMEWHERE IN TIME, their 6th studio album (and the first to include, wait for it: guitar synths) proved to be a quantum leap forward into the future sound of their brand of progressive metal, with enough ambiance and atmosphere to give the album a sound that feels very futuristic and modern, yet also sounds perfectly at home in 1986. Always remember to take an “insurance pee” before engaging in any time travel activities and be sure to “slow down” and take a moment to “pump your own gravy” (even if you felt “barely bothered” to do so at the time) and JOIN US as we dive into one of the most “timeless” albums in Maiden's history, complete with guitar synthesizers and more multi-layered guitar harmonies than you could shake an interdimensional scepter at as we dive into the wormhole of metal and travel elsewhere (and elsewhen) with IRON MAIDEN, SOMEWHERE IN TIME.
