Book Vs. Movie: The Asphalt JungleThe W.R. Burnett Novel & the 1950 John Huston FilmW.R. Burnett's 1949 novel The Asphalt Jungle is a compelling crime story that explores the minds, motivations, and downfalls of professional criminals. Set in a Midwestern city, it offers a multi-perspective narrative that vividly portrays the underworld. John Huston's 1950 film adaptation remains faithful to the book while enhancing the story with striking cinematography and strong performances. However, it shifts the setting to an unnamed urban landscape and introduces Marilyn Monroe's expanded role as a corrupt lawyer's mistress. Between the novel & the film, which did we prefer? EPISODE 78 - “FILM NOIR - Part 1 - WHAT IS NOIR?” - 3/10/2025 Have you ever wondered what exactly is film noir? TCM's EDDIE MULLER describes it this way: “Film Noir is all about treachery, deceit, and paranoia. You're never quite sure what is going on, who you can trust, or what dreadful pitfall waits around the corner.” This dark and twisted film genre popped up after WWII as a quiet cynicism began to creep into the national consciousness. In film noir, there is always an underbelly of darkness that comes out to play. And within the darkness, the shadows, and the neon lights, lie many stories of crime, dishonesty, adultery, murder, and mayhem. This week, we present the first in a special three-part series that delves into the darkest of genres where crooked cops, gangsters, torch singers, barflies, and other seedy character's live, love and kill. Join us as we discuss Film Noir!  SHOW NOTES:  Sources: Film Noir (2017), by Alian Silver & James Ursini; Into the Darkness: The Hidden World of Film Noir 1941-1959 (2016), by Mark A. Those Wonderful People Out There In The Dark

The Asphalt Jungle came out of MGM (yeah, MGM. Not exactly a wonderful musical as we shall see) in 1950, the classic era of film noir in the US. But Jungle might also be pegged with a label that someone walking down the street would now recognize: it's a heist film. The story comes from the wonderful author of crime, W. R. Burnett, and his 1949 novel. Burnett came up the hard way, working as a night clerk in a hotel while learning writing, exposing him to all sorts of characters and situations, seedy or not. His first novel, Little Caesar, established the gangster story in America, followed quickly by the film adaptation, starring Edward G. Robinson. Burnett made a habit of writing about a novel per year and rapidly turning around and selling the rights to Hollywood, sometimes writing the screenplay himself. He came up with the novels or screenplays that formed the basis for such classics as Scarface, with Paul Muni, memorably remade with Pacino, High Sierra, with Bogart and Ida Lupino, King Of The Underworld, The Dark Command, This Gun For Hire, which made diminutive Alan Ladd a star, The Great Escape, and Ice Station Zebra. Burnett's novels were unusual, not for the protagonists' helpless fall into crime in the big dirty city, but a contrast with their desire for a simpler, rural, straight life, one which they seldom achieve. As we shall see in Jungle. email: David@thosewonderfulpeople.comWebsite and blog: www.thosewonderfulpeople.comIG: @thosewonderfulpeopleTwitter: @FilmsInTheDark

Музикална история еп. 26: „Green, Green Grass Of Home“ на Tom Jones

Darik Podcast

Това е „Green, Green Grass of Home“ на Tom Jones от 1966 година. Тя става известна благодарение на изпълнението на кънтри звездата Porter Wagoner (Портър Уагънър), записана от него на седми юни 1965 година в студио на „RCA Victor“ в Нешвил, Тенеси, САЩ и включена в излезлия месец по-късно негов албум „On The Road: The Porter Wagoner Show“.

Marilyn Monroe broke through as an actress in 1950 with small, but acclaimed roles in All About Eve and The Asphalt Jungle. She was then a mistress of Johnny Hyde, head of the William Morris Agency. Hyde negotiated a seven year contract with 20th Century Fox and then unexpectedly passed away of a heart attack. In 1951, Monroe had supporting roles in three Fox comedies: As Young as You Feel, Love Nest, and Let's Make It Legal. With her star on the rise, she received several thousand fan letters a week, and was declared "Miss Cheesecake" by the army newspaper Stars and Stripes. In early 1952 as she began a much-publicized romance with ex-Yankee Joe DiMaggio, Monroe revealed she'd posed nude in 1949, thus getting ahead of the scandal and gaining sympathy from the public. She explained she'd been broke and needed the money and was soon featured on the cover of Life magazine as the "Talk of Hollywood." Gossip columnist Hedda Hopper declared her the "cheesecake queen" turned "box office smash." Wanting to improve her acting, she studied hard with Michael Chekhov. Two of Monroe's films — Clash by Night and Don't Bother to Knock — were released soon after to capitalize on public interest. The films showed her range, as Monroe played a fish cannery worker in the former and a disturbed babysitter in the latter. In Howard Hawks's Monkey Business, she played a secretary opposite Cary Grant. In O. Henry's Full House, with Charles Laughton, she appeared in a passing vignette as a nineteenth-century street walker. Monroe added to her sex symbol reputation by wearing a revealing dress when acting as Grand Marshal at the Miss America Pageant parade, and told gossip columnist Earl Wilson that she usually wore no underwear. By the end of the year, gossip columnist Florabel Muir named Monroe the "it girl" of 1952. When Niagara was released in January 1953, women's clubs protested it as immoral. In some scenes, Monroe's body was covered only by a sheet or a towel, considered shocking by contemporary audiences. The film's most famous scene is a long shot of Monroe from behind walking with hips swaying. Audiences turned out in droves. The next month, Marilyn Monroe was the guest of Dean and Jerry's February 24th, 1953 episode.

The Immortals haven't had a worst episode ever in awhile so we gotta give the fans what they want! Almost all of them go deep into The Asphalt Jungle and even fewer will come out alive. They also are perplexed by the sound of Tago Mago, the size of the potatoes, the backstory of Captain Beefheart, the miracles of Charlotte's Web, and the age of Abe Vigoda. Also stay tuned to see if Austin releases the episode or not! They definitely nailed this.     Intro 0:00 – 2:47 The Asphalt Jungle 2:47 – 32:52 Tago Mago 32:52 – 42:06 Peruvian Purple Potatoes 42:06 – 50:49 Electricity 50:49 – 1:04:02 Charlotte's Web 1:04:02 – 1:16:52 Barney Miller 1:16:52 – 1:23:33 Outro 1:23:33 – 1:31:16     --Leave your own henge ratings at TheArtImmortal.com --Be sure you leave an iTunes review so Pedro can give you a compliment on air.   Email Twitter iTunes YouTube   Join us Thursday next as we discuss more things. When people list off caper films, it's a long list that comes to mind — Ocean's Eleven, Rififi, The Killing, The Ladykillers, Kelly's Heroes, The Italian Job, The Usual Suspects, even more recently Inception — but the film that really kicked it all off was 1950s masterpiece, The Asphalt Jungle. John Huston co-adapted W. R. Burnett's novel and turned it into one of his greatest directorial achievements, a story of a group of criminals working hard to pull off the perfect heist only to have everything fall apart in the end. It's not only the start of the caper subgenre, but also a master work of character development and taut filmmaking. Join us — Pete Wright and Andy Nelson — as we continue our John Huston series with this fantastic film. We talk about how the film looks at the criminal's heist and how that balances with the character development. We chat about the amazing actors who bring the film to life — from Sterling Hayden to Marilyn Monroe. We discuss where the film fits in MGM's body of work and how it felt different for what the studio was churning out at the time. And we revel in the gorgeous black-and-white cinematography shot by Harold Rosson that gives the film a haunting, gray film noir vibe and helps define this jungle — this city beneath the city. It's a film that quickly shot up our list of favorite films upon rewatching and is definitely worth talking about. Tune in!
