The Athletic's Ben Standig is here and ready to tackle two of his favorite subjects: The NFL Draft and the Washington Wizards with guests Dane Brugler (The Athletic) and Ava Wallace (Washington Post). Ben opens the show with a rundown on the latest involving the team including a pre-draft meeting with potential no. 1 overall selection Travon Walker and what Deebo Samuel's trade request means for Terry McLaurin. Then Ben welcomes in draft analyst Dane Brugler (12:25). What does Dane make of the wild top 10? Is Jameson Williams an overlooked consideration for Washington at 11? Also, thoughts on Kyle Hamilton, Chris Olave, Devin Lloyd, running backs, Day 3 sleepers and more. Next comes a pivot to the hardwood as Ava joins the chat to put a capper on the Wizards' chaotic season (35:20). Does the lineup hope with Bradley Beal, Kyle Kuzma and others outweigh the frustration? Are they any closer to contending? What about the future for Wes Unseld Jr., Tomas Satoransky and Rui Hachimura?

In Spurscast episode 649, Spurscast host Paul Garcia discusses:  The Spurs in their last 7 games Some late-season roster moves by the Spurs The Spurs' chances of making the play-in game The Spurs in their last 7 Games The San Antonio Spurs went 2-5 in their last seven games, with wins against the Los Angeles Lakers and Washington Wizards, and losses to the Miami Heat, Memphis Grizzlies, Sacramento Kings, Charlotte Hornets, and Toronto Raptors. The loss to the Kings was the one that stung since the Spurs were projected to go 3-4 in their last seven games, but instead went 2-5. Through 66 games of the season, the Spurs are 25-41, with a league-average offense and the 19th ranked defense. The Spurs are still close to the Lakers and New Orleans Pelicans for the 9th and 10th seeds that would allow San Antonio to be in the play-in tournament. Some players discussed in the episode are Dejounte Murray, Keldon Johnson, Lonnie Walker IV, Jakob Poeltl, and Devin Vassell. Each players' play in the last 11 games is examined since the trade deadline, where there's been more opportunity with Derrick White now off the team. Late Season Roster Moves The Spurs made some late-season roster moves recently, by agreeing to a buyout agreement with Tomas Satoransky, converting the two-way contracts of Joe Wieskamp and Devontae Cacok to standard NBA contracts, and finally, signing DJ Stewart Jr. and Robert Woodard II to two-way contracts. Each move is discussed in the episode as well as the Spurs' cap space projections for this summer. The Spurs' Chances of Making the Play-In Game With just 16 regular-season games remaining, the Spurs are 3.5 games behind the Lakers for the 9th seed and 2 games behind the Pelicans for the 10th seed. The Lakers are projected to go 7-10 in their final 17 games, and if that happens, the Spurs would need to go 11-5 down the stretch to finish with a better record than the Lakers. The Pelicans are projected to go 6-10 in their final 16 games, and if that happens, the Spurs would need to go 8-8 down the stretch. The Trail Blazers handed the Los Angeles Lakers a comically embarrassing loss Wednesday night at the Moda Center. Portland rolled out a lineup featuring two two-way players, a second round rookie and minimum contract veterans around Anfernee Simons and still managed to beat LeBron James, Anthony Davis and the mostly whole Lakers. LA Stinks. But the win was entertaining and unexpected even if the Lakers really, truly and completely stink.Off the court the Blazers made another trade on Wednesday sending out recently acquired Nickeil Alexander-Walker and Tomas Satoransky in exchange for Joe Ingles, Elijah Hughes and a 2022 second round pick. Ingles tore his ACL last month and will likely never play for the Blazers and Hughes is a second rounder on an expiring deal. This trade isn't about the players Portland landed its about the $5 million in cap space the trade created for the Blazers next season. Flexibility remains the name of the game in the Northwest. Finally, a Haters Guide to tanking. Who to root for, who to root against as we head down the stretch of the season. It's time to start booing CJ McCollum's new team and investing some emotional energy in the Kings. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

The end of an era in Portland as the Trail Blazers on Tuesday sent CJ McCollum to New Orleans along with Tony Snell and Larry Nance Jr. in exchange for Josh Hart, Nickeil Alexander-Walker, Tomas Satoransky, Did Louzada, a protected 2022 first round pick and two future second round picks. Hart and Alexander-Walker can be contributors in the future and the draft pick is a nice consolation for losing a longtime centerpiece like McCollum. Did the Blazers get better? How can Hart and NAW help? This deal on the surface seems underwhelming, and it likely is, but it sets up the Blazers for more drastic moves down the line. So where do the Blazers stand in terms of cap space and future contracts after a couple of deadline moves? Is the beginning of a rebuild or the basis for a serious retooling? The answer remains to be seen but this deadline has left both paths open. Finally, let's remember what McCollum did in Portland over 8+ seasons. There was the Game 7 in Denver and an MIP season but also a lot of buckets and a consistency that should be appreciated. The show closes with a moment of appreciation. Stefan Weissenboeck is a player development coach at Brose Bamberg since 2010/11 season and has worked under the coaches Chris Fleming & Andrea Trinchieri most notably with whom he won multiple domestic titles during this period. He picked up basketball through his father and was committed early on as a player in Austria as well as one year at Hawaii-Pacific. After injuries derailed his playing career he turned to being an Assistant Coach before discovering the niche role of a Player Development coach. After playing for Arkadia Traiskirchen in Austria, a short stint in Lissabon and finishing his career at Nuernberg, he turned to being an Assistant there. Chris Fleming brought him to Bamberg and the rest is history. Players such as PJ Tucker, Brad Wanamaker, Kyle Hines, Brian Roberts, Daniel Theis, Marcus Slaughter went through his school of thought. He also worked with Jakob Poeltl from Austria as well Tomas Satoransky because of his Czech Republic connection. Stefan also shared stories about his experience with the Brooklyn Nets and told a ‘nail-story' in regards to Caris LeVert & Joe Harris. Jarrett Allen & Nic Claxton have also had the experience of working with Stefan. Today we he had a phenomenal conversation together, my good friend from Bamberg. I'm intrigued by the “Player Development” position, especially in regards to shooting and Stefan was very kind to open up about different experiences with players. He shared stories from various players from the NBA as well as Europe and how he worked with them on different things. We explored the communication aspect between him and the player, as well as the dynamic when a 2nd coach is involved. Andre Drummond is now generating trade interest from the Chicago Bulls. At first glance, it doesn't make much sense for the Bulls to obtain Drummond. But, when Wendell Carter Jr. cannot stay healthy and is more of a power forward, along with Chicago's lackluster depth, making a move for Drummond makes a ton of sense. Trading with Chicago also makes sense for Cleveland as well. Chris and Evan propose the Cavaliers send Andre Drummond and Cedi Osman to the Bulls for Otto Porter Jr. and Tomas Satoransky. Porter would be a welcome addition on the perimeter for Cleveland and Satoransky would be an immediate answer for the Cavaliers' glaring need for a backup point guard. It's been reported that Cedi Osman and Taurean Prince are both available in trade discussions as well. It isn't surprising that Osman, one of Cleveland's more erratic players, and Prince, a veteran looking to play for a championship, are available. Osman could work in an environment with more structure while Prince could work nicely for any contender. Finally, Chris and Evan talk about how Collin Sexton, Darius Garland, Jarrett Allen, and Isaac Okro are considered untouchable but why it's reasonable that Larry Nance Jr. isn't.
