If you're new to our show, each of the previous 12 seasons have had a different theme, a different format, and a different approach to unpacking and dissecting both individual and organizational performance. These Rewind episodes take a look back at some my favorite shows in case you missed them the first time around… or in case you'd like to give them a second listen.I hope you enjoy, and more importantly, I hope this Rewind episode helps you Raise Your Game! You may know him as the Hall of Fame coach of Michigan State's men's basketball team, but did you know Tom Izzo's very first coaching job out of college was at a High School in Michigan? Did you know that his coaching tree includes Tom Crean of Georgia and Jim Boylen of the Chicago Bulls? Here are several isolated responses from an in-person conversation I had with Coach Tom Izzo, in Las Vegas at the USA Basketball Fantasy Camp – back when I was the host of the Pure Sweat Basketball Show. We discussed the difference between being a great player and a great winner, why a player led team will always outperform a coach led team in the long run and why the coaching community needs to spend more time invested in self-development. What makes the best the best? Ultimately the best are where they are because of the mindset, habits, and rituals they have—both in their respective “arenas,” but also in private, during the unseen hours. Success isn't something that happens to you. It's something you attract and you create. Successful people do the little things better than everyone else because they know all the big things arise from them. The highest performers in all walks of life have taken full ownership. They got to where they are and have stayed there because they have chosen to establish, tweak and repeat positive habits. They understand that you can't be selective when it comes to excellence, that how we do anything is how we do everything.Sustain Your Game teaches you how to bring your A game to every area of your life. With advice from top CEOs, journalists, social scientists, and more, you'll learn the framework for how to beat stress, stagnation, and burnout. In the first hour, Dan Bernstein, Laurence Holmes, and Leila Rahimi remembered the time former Bulls coach Jim Boylen compared little-used center Luke Kornet to seven-time NBA champion Robert Horry. All the show members then shared how they consumed the Bears' win over the Patriots in primetime Monday. Coach Jeff Smith, In this episode, you'll hear from Coach Jeff Smith. Coach Smith is currently the Associate Head Coach for Coach Greg Kampe at Oakland University. And, everyone knows Coach Jeff as simply Smitty! Coach Smith was named the Associate Head Coach in August 2019. Before joining Coach Kampe and his incredible coaching staff, Coach Smitty spent the previous seven seasons as an assistant coach at Central Michigan University for Coach Keno Davis. This is Coach Smitty's second stint at Oakland. He was on the sidelines for the Golden Grizzlies as an Assistant Coach and Associate Head Coach for five sessions. And, Coach Smitty was part of a win in the 2005 NCAA Tournament. I am very eager for you to hear the amazing things that Smitty has to say about Coach Kampe. A former player and a graduate of Alma College, Smitty got his start as an assistant coach at Albion College from 1995 to 1997. He then joined the CMU program as a graduate assistant in 1997 and was promoted to assistant coach two years later. As you soon will hear, Coach Jay Smith played a major part in getting Smitty started in college coaching. Coach Smitty also worked as an assistant on Coach Jim Boylen's staff at Utah from 2007-11. I love our conversation. For starters, if you are a young coach who has been told that you can't make it in this business - then this is the conversation for you. Coach Smitty was driven to prove so many people wrong. And, he has accomplished this. There is also a level of reflection from Coach Smith that is truly incredible and inspiring. Finally, the tips that Coach Smith shares about recruiting, teaching and creating genuine relationships are simply excellent. And, you will also be screaming “LIVE in the MOMENT“ and “CHASE YOUR DREAMS” after listening to this podcast. #36: Nate Loenser shares what it means to maximize your abilities, make no excuses, and live life with grace. Loenser is currently with the University of Nebraska basketball program. Loenser spent five seasons with the Bulls, including three seasons as an assistant coach for Hoiberg and Jim Boylen. He helped develop 2021 NBA all-star Zach Lavine as well as Kris Dunn, Ryan Arcidiacono, Justin Holiday, Chandler Hutchison, David Nwaba, Denzel Valentine and Timothé Luwawu-Cabarrot during his tenure with the Bulls. Loenser also served as the Bulls' NBA Summer League coach in 2019, a roster which featured NBA Lottery pick Coby White and ran the Bulls' predraft workouts for three seasons.Prior to joining the Bulls coaching staff, he was the head coach of the Windy City Bulls D-League team in 2016-17. Loenser spent two years on Hoiberg's Iowa State staff and was a key component in helping the Cyclones to a pair of Big 12 Tournament titles. He was the Cyclones' Director of Player Development in 2014-15, as ISU went 25-9 and tied for second in the Big 12. That season, Georges Niang earned All-America honors, while Niang, Monté Morris and Jameel McKay were recognized on the All-Big 12 teams. McKay was the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year. In his first season, Loenser served as graduate assistant as the program enjoyed one of its best seasons in program history. The Cyclones finished with 28 wins, won the Big 12 Tournament title and reached the NCAA Sweet 16. After one season at Northern University High School in Cedar Falls, Loenser began his collegiate coaching career at Southern Mississippi. He served on Larry Eustachy's staff for six seasons, helping the Golden Eagles post a pair of 20-win seasons and reach the CIT in 2010. Loenser returned to Iowa to coach high school basketball, serving as the head coach at Spirit Lake High School before joining the Iowa State staff in 2013. A native of Cedar Falls, Iowa, Loenser was a 2002 graduate of Iowa State, where he played baseball for the Cyclones in 2001. He was a four-sport athlete (baseball, basketball, football, and golf) at Northern University High School. Enjoy the show!

As a result, Coach Oats was named the SEC Coach of the Year, was a National Coach of the Year finalist, and was recently rewarded with a contract extension. I have been friends with Nate since 2002 when Coach Oats was named Head Coach at Romulus High School in Romulus, Michigan. Nate is an elite high major college coach. However, he is a high school coach at heart. If you are currently a high school coach, this podcast is for you. Nate shares so many stories from his high school career and how his high school experiences shaped who he is as a coach today. As you soon will hear, Nate has this relentless competitive side that is so evident from his days at Romulus to now at Alabama. Nate also shares so many tips for young college coaches. In Episode 923, Sean and John Wilmes (RealGM) briefly hit on the Raptors' shorthanded 122-113 loss to the Bulls, but then take some time to dive into the state of the Bulls after their deadline deal for Nikola Vucevic. They first offer up their biggest takeaways from the game, and they revolve around big performances by Zach LaVine (13 assists), Chris Boucher (38 & 19!!!) and Pascal Siakam (27 on 10-of-17). Next, they dig into the Bulls decision to trade for Vucevic, and talk a whole lot about the merits of putting a good and competent basketball team on the floor in lieu of tanking out of the middle of the league. John's opinions on tanking are objectively correct. Lastly, they take some time to talk about the Norman Powell/Gary Trent deal, Lauri Markkanen's future, whether John misses Jim Boylen at all, and more.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar.
