This week: Miliband's empty energy promises. Ed Miliband has written a public letter confirming that Labour plans to decarbonise the electricity system by 2030. The problem with this, though, is that he doesn't have the first idea about how to do it. The grid doesn't have the capacity to transmit the required energy, Ross Clark writes, and Miliband's claim that wind is ‘nine times cheaper' than fossil fuels is based upon false assumptions. What is more, disclosed plans about ‘GB Energy' reveal that Miliband's pet project isn't really a company at all – but an investment scheme. This empty vessel will funnel taxpayer money into the hands of private companies rather than produce any energy itself. To discuss, Lara and Will were joined by Shaun Spiers, executive director of the Green Alliance and Stanley Johnson, former MEP, environmental campaigner and author of the new book In the footsteps of Marco Polo deals extensively on China's energy problems and opportunities. (02:26) Then: Lara and Will take us through some of their favourite pieces from the magazine, including the lead book review and Catriona Olding's Still Life column. Next: meet Nigel Farage's millionaire Reform chairman. The Reform party has a new poster boy, the 37-year-old party Chairman Zia Yusuf. Self-dubbed a ‘British Muslim patriot', Yusuf is a former Goldman Sachs partner and tech owner with an expensive taste for cars. He is tasked with transforming Farage's outfit from a limited company into a proper party. You can read James Heale's full interview with Yusuf in this week's magazine, but they have kindly allowed us to hear a section of their discussion on the podcast. They talk about the Nigel Farage effect and Lee Anderson's comments about Sadiq Khan. (18:34) And finally: should we feel sorry for restaurant critics? Angus Colwell, The Spectator's assistant online editor, writes about the plight of the restaurant critic and the stresses of doing what many would consider the best job in the world. To discuss further, Angus joined us alongside the Observer's restaurant critic Jay Rayner, whose new book Nights Out, At Home celebrates his 25 years as a food critic and is available to buy now. (29:41) Hosted by Lara Prendergast and William Moore. Produced by Oscar Edmondson and Patrick Gibbons.

“She's six.” These are the words we hear in a clip of The Figurehead Biden when he asks a little girl if she is 17. Normally you could say, “oh, goofy old Joe,” except this is a guy who grabs little girls' breasts on film. He is probably a pedophile and is the perfect man for the times we are in. He is not just owned by the flesh in that sense; he is owned mentally because he is so decrepit. What do we do? We are going to talk about Galatians 5:17, and that will serve as the through-line in this discussion. We also talk about the National Guard that was called up and then canceled on January 6th and CNN announcing that there is a huge difference between Trump and Biden in the document scandal, and Tony Blair's solution to the migrant crisis. What does God's Word say? Galatians 5:17For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do.Episode 1,241 Links:Joe Biden asks a little girl if she's 17. Just when you think Boris Johnson can't shock you anymore with his general moral depravity, here's there to surprise you! OK, Matt Hancock entrusting his WhatsApp messages to the world's least trustworthy woman is pretty funny. But is the Telegraph using them to rewrite history on COVID? Plus, our panel gently disagree on the wisdom of Keir Starmer hiring Sue Gray as his Chief of Staff. Sunak bets on cruelty to small boat refugees to reanimate his Prime Ministership. And as Harry and Meghan are turfed out of Frogmore Cottage, which homes were our panel glad to see the back door of? “There is no British male who has eaten more complimentary canapés than Stanley Johnson.” – Tom Peck “I hadn't realised how much Simon Case is just another little boy in this WhatsApp group and not a senior civil servant with gravitas.” – Arthur Snell “There is a weird Alan Partridge vanity to Hancock. Somehow he's worried about his legacy?” – Seth Thévoz “The more Johnson uses the honour system for outrageously nepotistic means, the easier it is for a future government to get rid of it.” – Tom Peck Written and presented by Ros Taylor with Arthur Snell, Seth Thévoz and Tom Peck. The next domino of the Lakers season has fallen, with the Lakers trading Talen Horton-Tucker and Stanley Johnson for old nemesis, Patrick Beverley. The guys discuss the experience of cheering for a player you used to hate, how Beverley imbues his teams with urgency and competitive spirit, his role on the Lakers, and some of his limitations. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
It wasn't the trade people were expecting, necessarily, but it was a pretty important one. Wednesday night, the Lakers agreed to send G/F Talen Horton-Tucker and forward Stanley Johnson to Utah for veteran point guard Patrick Beverley. Assuming Beverley at 34 can keep up his track record of defense and (a slump from distance last year notwithstanding) good 3-point shooting, he'll improve the Lakers in both areas this season. Meanwhile, THT and Johnson both had potential, in different ways, and potential value, in different ways, but neither had a clear path to significant playing time. So in that sense - one guy in who will play a lot for two guys out who might not have - the Lakers improve. So what's next? On the surface at least, it appears to be a trade that comes before another trade, in part because it leaves the Lakers with a glut at point guard in Beverley, Russell Westbrook and Kendrick Nunn (on a team already featuring a point guard in LeBron James), but also because Westbrook and Beverley hate each other. Like, a long, rich history of feuding that goes back a decade. It feels kind of untenable ... though it would be great if the Lakers gave us a glimpse of what it could look like, just for entertainment purposes. So assuming the trade is Westbrook to Indiana for Buddy Hield and Myles Turner (long rumored) would that, along with the Beverley deal, put the Lakers in position to contend? It improves them for sure, but how much? Finally, while THT still has the potential to be a quality player in the league and carve out a long career, his trade from LA is a cap to a horrible stretch of asset management from the Lakers. Like, they botched this good. And while the team deserves credit for not clinging to an error (many, many errors), you can only get points for undoing bad mistakes so many times. This is not a happy ending where the Lakers come out ahead. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: The Lakers are trading for Patrick Beverley. SEGMENT 2: So what's next? Is Russ soon to follow? Can the Lakers spin themselves back into contention? SEGMENT 3: The mismanagement of THT, and what he represents about the Lakers front office. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Meanwhile, THT and Johnson both had potential, in different ways, and potential value, in different ways, but neither had a clear path to significant playing time.So in that sense - one guy in who will play a lot for two guys out who might not have - the Lakers improve. Can Juan Toscano-Anderson or Stanley Johnson be the combo forward who slots between LeBron and Anthony Davis in a Lakers closing lineup? Do either have the full offensive skill set? What about the defensive versatility? Can both even play in the rotation if the Lakers start AD at power forward? Pete and Darius answer these questions by breaking down Stanley and JTA's games, the Lakers forward position in general, and some of the challenges of investing in this part of the roster when your best players already play those positions. Free agency begins this week in the NBA, and the Lakers have a tremendous amount of work in front of them. But as the curtain rises on rebuilding yet another brand new Lakers roster, there's more smoke billowing around the Kyrie Irving-to-LA conversation. Not any fire, yet, it would appear, but with careful NBA reporters saying that LeBron James and Kyrie are communicating and that there's some substance to the interest, it's not nothing, either. And with James Harden reportedly set to take a less-than-max-length extension with Philadelphia, does that change the arithmetic around Kyrie's leverage, whether in Brooklyn or L.A.? What about LeBron's leadership? In an interview with Bloomberg, Golden State's Draymond Green noted that LeBron's presence would help mitigate Kyrie's relative lack of leadership skills. Certainly not a guy you'd want as a frontman, for sure... which means LeBron has to be here as long as Irving would be. Is James committed to Los Angeles in that way? Finally, as free agency starts, we open up the mailbag to look at some of the team needs, and whether or not the team will recalibrate its strategy around signing free agents. Should they bring back anyone? Dwight Howard? Carmelo Anthony? Should they guarantee spots for Stanley Johnson or Wenyen Gabriel? It's gonna be real tough to pull together a coherent roster on minimum deals and one taxpayer exception, that's for sure. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: The Kyrie rumors are percolating. It's free agency week and the Lakers have several decisions to make, starting with their own guys who can hit the market on June 30. Pete, Mike, and Darius begin their discussion focusing on Malik Monk's pending free agency. How much should the Lakers value him? Can he play a big role on a title contending team? What kind of contract should he get? Then later, the guys discuss Austin Reaves and Stanley Johnson's team options and how the Lakers should value them, plus whether any of the other vets from last year's team should return next season. As we all settle into the Lakers' offseason, big questions - and there are many - rumors and reports are already circulating about the direction the team might go in replacing Frank Vogel. One nugget reported by Sam Amick at The Athletic? LeBron James would be interested in the Lakers hiring former Warriors/current ESPN broadcaster Mark Jackson. Now, this is highly unikely (Jackson was a rumored candidate after the Lakers canned Luke Walton, and even when the Cavs fired David Blatt), but the concept raises interesting questions about how the Lakers need to approach the coaching search.Because while Jackson is hardly the perfect candidate, that guy doesn't exist. It's very unlikely the Lakers will have access to the creme de la creme of uber-elite coaching options. So they need to be very clear on what they want, why, and who can deliver on their top priorities. From there, they have to match that coach with a roster that accentuates those strengths. That certainly didn't happen this season.HOSTS: Andy and Brian KamenetzkySEGMENT 1: Stanley Johnson's exit interview revealed a lot about how the Lakers mismatched players and roles. Getting the right mindset to play the right role isn't always easy for decorated pros.SEGMENT 2: Johnson also noted how skillsets on the Lakers didn't quite mesh, either. Understanding why, and getting a more coherent construction for next year's roster, is critical.SEGMENT 3: The Lakers seem (very, very) unlikely to hire Jackson, but just the idea raises all kinds of interesting questions about what the Lakers would look for in their next coach.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!PrizePicksCheck out PrizePicks.com and use promo code: “NBA” or go to your app store and download the app today.
