Why the Lakers Signed Dennis Schröder, and Patrick Beverley's Reported Defensive Role

The Lakers made weekend news signing free agent guard Dennis Schröder to a one-year deal, bringing him back for a second run in El Segundo. Through the weekend, more reporting emerged explaining why the Lakers thought it was a good idea reunite with the mercurial German. There was a good performance at Eurobasket, which is some pretty high end competition. And that he went to play there without the security of an NBA deal in hand. (A cynic would note that added need for him to go play, in order to get one.) There was lobbying from Schröder to return, and some strong statements about righting unfinished business on his Instagram page that demonstrates a desire to contribute to the purple and gold. And, of course, some practical understanding that more depth could come in handy, given lingering question marks around Kendrick Nunn's health and a fairly well-established injury history with Patrick Beverley (he's missed a ton of games over the last few seasons). Plus LeBron James, and natural worries about his body at age 39. But how exactly do the Lakers plan on getting all these guys on the floor? Well, they're gonna have to go small, first of all. And it might also mean using Beverley in creative ways, as a 3-and-D guy often assigned to be the team's primary wing defender. Now, a lot of work is being done defining "wing," here. Can't imagine the Lakers spend a lot of time letting Beverley spend games running with, say, Jayson Tatum. But what about bigger 2-guards? Do they plan on using Austin Reaves more as a 3? What about Lonnie Walker IV? Bottom line, while the Lakers can claim they'll play all six members of the backcourt, practically speaking it's nearly impossible, if any of Thomas Bryant, Damian Jones, Juan Toscano-Anderson, and Troy Brown ever get to take off their warmups. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Why did the Lakers bring Schröder back? SEGMENT 2: How much does Schröder's Eurobasket success really matter? Is Pat Bev as primary wing defender a sustainable strategy? SEGMENT 3: How exactly can the Lakers play all six of their guards? Step one, go real small. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! What did Bryant do well for the Wizards early on? What derailed his time there other than the ACL tear he suffered in January 2021? Does Matt think he would be a good fit in the starting lineup alongside Anthony Davis? The two try to answer all of those questions before ending with Russell Westbrook and Kyle Kuzma. Could Westbrook be back in Washington sooner rather than later? How has D.C. taken to "Kuzmania"?

There are plenty of reasons to worry about the Lakers this season, especially if you're setting the bar at a championship. Or even avoiding the play-in tournament. Or if you want to get really dark, making the play-in tournament. But while ESPN gave them better odds this year to be "Team Turmoil," they also landed on the "Team Turnaround" list in their annual summer polling of execs and whatnot. So how can that happen? First, it's important to define terms. What does a turnaround mean? Is it a championship? Because if that's the only definition, Lakers fans are almost certain to be disappointed. But if turnaround can mean something else? And to that end, it's important fans remember that damn near everything that could go wrong last season did. Technically, not everything - it could have been worse - but replicating that string of bad outcomes will be hard. So with that in mind, what are some realistic things that could change this season that will help improve the team's fortunes? Start with Kendrick Nunn, who is often forgotten when people talk about what the Lakers could be this season. The issue isn't that he's an All-Star, but it's a higher level player that for all intents and purposes functions as a free agent acquisition for this season. Assuming he can play (and we need proof of life), obviously. Nunn can be a floor spacer, if he shoots near the 38% clip he managed in his second season in Miami. That's a big help. Add in reason to believe Austin Reaves will benefit from not hitting the rookie wall, which will help improve on his 32% from last year, and then Thomas Bryant, who did good work there in Washington before his injury and there's at least a recipe where the Lakers aren't a total catastrophe from 3-point range. And that's just one thing! More optimism coming in our next episode! HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Why everything that could go wrong last season did. SEGMENT 2: What does turnaround mean, anyway? SEGMENT 3: Kendrick Nunn is a reason for optimism. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Andy's still out, but that's ok! Jacob Rude, the fantastic writer for Silver Screen and Roll joins the show. We start with Thomas Bryant, returning to the Lakers after a few years in Washington. As a former Indiana Hoosier, Jacob (who also hosts Locked On Hoosiers), Bryant has been a player he's followed closely. What exactly can the Lakers expect from the guy in his return? What's different about Bryant now vs. the guy the Lakers drafted. Is he going to start? From there, it's on to Russell Westbrook. He has a new agent, Jeff Schwartz, who certainly represents a host of big players across the NBA, and has also negotiated a ton of buyouts. That, no question, got people's attention. Will that be relevant before the season starts? Does Jacob think the Lakers should give it a try, or just cut bait? What about the potential trades? Is Kyrie worth waiting for, or should the Lakers pull the trigger on Indiana (Buddy Hield and Myles Turner)? Finally, Jeanie Buss's Twitter feed was hacked, and the results were predictably hilarious. And what will come of LeBron James and his extension? How long will he let this play out? HOSTS: Brian Kamenetzky, with Guest Jacob Rude SEGMENT 1: A scouting report on Thomas Bryant. Welcome back, big man! SEGMENT 2: Russell Westbrook has a new agent. Is that important, and why? Over at The Athletic, Seth Portnow has issued his yearly "tiers" ratings, And while we're not yet at the main course (where do LeBron and Anthony Davis end up?) the series has already revealed a couple fairly devastating things about the Lakers, and the level of talent on the roster. Russell Westbrook, who cost the Lakers a first round pick and valuable depth, is near the bottom of Tier 5, ranked outside the top 100 players in the league. Meanwhile, no other Lakers (aside from James and Davis) will appear on the list at all. Compared to other teams in the Western Conference, this illustrates a staggering lack of roster depth. Is there any way the Lakers can make it up? Even if you think their middle tier guys pop a little - think Lonnie Walker, Thomas Bryant, Talen Horton-Tucker, Austin Reaves - does that get them to the talent level of, say, Denver? Of Golden State? Ummmmm..... no. It doesn't. So how can they fix it? Well, with Donovan Mitchell trade rumors now swirling, it raises an interesting hypothetical. No, not for Mitchell (because Danny Ainge - DANNY AINGE - is not sending his star to the Lakers in a deal that includes Russell Westbrook). But if Utah really wants to rid themselves of salary, what if the Lakers took all their veterans (and the corresponding salary commitments) off their hands? Guys like Mike Conley, Bojan Bogdanovic, Jordan Clarkson, Rudy Gay, Pat Beverley, and so on? Would it be worth making a deal for those guys, if it meant losing out on the opportunity to get someone like Kyrie Irving? The Lakers have been chasing center Thomas Bryant throughout the free agency period, and late Tuesday finally landed their man. The former Laker draftee, who only turns 25 at the end of the month, returns on a one-year deal that should provide a major opportunity to re-establish his value around the NBA. While the Lakers moved quickly when free agency opened, signing four players out of the gate, a very solid argument can be made that Bryant will be the most impactful. Before hurting his knee in Washington, Bryant was evolving into one of the better young offensive centers in the game, scoring efficiently and stretching the floor with a reliable 3-point shot (over 40%). The Lakers, desperate for floor spacing, may need to find Bryant a role if for no other reason than he's their best shooter, on paper. He is this year's Malik Monk - a player with some skill on a minimum contract trying to parlay opportunity into security. It worked for Monk, who got two years and 19 mil from Sacramento. If it works for Bryant, that's good news for the Lakers because it means he played well. What about Lonnie Walker IV? He talked Wednesday in El Segundo about defense. A lot. About defending multiple positions, and using his athleticism. He talked about shooting, and making teams pay for leaving him open. Walker sounds sincere, and has plenty of incentive to make all of it happen, but to this point in his career he hasn't, which is why Walker was available for the Lakers to sign. Can he evolve in L.A.? Finally, Juan Toscano-Anderson spoke to the media, reflecting on his excitement to be in Los Angeles (he was, like many, a big Kobe guy) and play for a team with the history of the Lakers, after experiencing a championship with Golden State. JTA, who is going to be massively popular in L.A., talked a lot about culture and what goes into making positive contributions on that front. It's something the Lakers need. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: The Lakers sign Thomas Bryant, continuing the trend of skewing young in free agency. Is he the best player they've picked up? SEGMENT 2: Can Lonnie Walker IV live up to some of the potential that made him a high draft pick? What's been missing? SEGMENT 3: Why the Lakers need Juan Toscano-Anderson, beyond what he might contribute on the floor. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! TrueBill Don't fall for subscription scams. Late Tuesday night, former Indiana Hoosiers basketball big man Thomas Bryant agreed to a deal with the Los Angeles Lakers to compete for a starting center spot. Bryant is one of the final players to sign with the Lakers in NBA free agency and could be an interesting low-risk, high-reward candidate. On today's episode of Locked on Hoosiers, Jacob Rude (@JacobRude) breaks down Bryant's signing with the Lakers, Coming off a knee injury that sidelined him for the better part of two seasons, Bryant is looking to revitalize his career back in Los Angeles for the franchise that drafted him five years ago. In a continuation of the positional preview series for the IU football team, we look at a defensive line that started hot and faded late last season. Led by Ryder Anderson and Weston Kramer last season, the Hoosiers had bright spots but struggled for consistency. The show wraps by looking at how the team will replace the holes left by Anderson and Kramer's departures. With lots of uncertainty around the position, the defensive line is one of the biggest question marks heading into next season. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! The Indiana Hoosiers basketball team saw the last big missing piece of its non-conference schedule filled on Tuesday with the report of the team traveling to Xavier for the Gavitt Games. Knowing that, the vast majority of IU's schedule for next season can be pieced together. On today's episode of Locked on Hoosiers, Jacob Rude (@JacobRude) reacts to the report of the Hoosiers traveling to meet the Xavier Musketeers next season. It's a different team that the Hoosiers have not played in recent seasons and only historically have played a small handful of times. Having their opponent for the Gavitt Games now, it's easy to piece together what IU's schedule will look like, including a much tougher non-conference slate this season. The increased strength of that non-conference schedule also serves as the latest reminder that Indiana is better off having gotten out of the Crossroads Classic. The show wraps by previewing NBA free agency with a number of former Hoosiers set to enter it on Thursday. In Episode 1182, Sean Woodley goes solo to tee up the Toronto Raptors off-season and break down what the ideal moves for the team might look like. Off the top, Sean digs into what resources the Raptors actually have to work with going into the summer. They don't have any cap space at all, but they do have the Mid Level Exception to work with, and the Bird Rights of Chris Boucher, Thad Young and Yuta Watanabe to help with bringing back their own pending unrestricted free agents. Will the Raptors have to move on from one of Khem Birch of Malachi Flynn to open up some flexibiility? Next, Sean digs into the question of what exactly the Raptors should prioritize this summer. Should they throw the $10+ million Mid Level at a big man to beef up the front court? Or should they opt to spend their biggest off-season tool to improve their ball-handling and inject a bit of shooting into the mix? Lastly, Sean lays out his ideal opening day depth chart for the Toronto Raptors, and why someone like Thomas Bryant or JaVale McGee would be a nice addition to the centre mix. Sean's Ideal Depth Chart: PG - Scottie Barnes / Delon Wright / Malachi Flynn / Dalano Banton SG - Fred VanVleet / Gary Trent Jr. / Svi Mykhaliuk SF - OG Anunoby / Thad Young / 2nd Rounder  PF - Pascal Siakam / Chris Boucher / Justin Champagnie C - Precious Achiuwa / Thomas Bryant OR Javale McGee  Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! An Early Look at Potential Free Agents for the Trail Blazers

Join hosts Danny Marang and Brandon Sprague on this episode of Jacked Ramsays Live. They'll take a look at the upcoming group of free agents as the official offseason moves a step closer. Danny and Brandon will also discuss the impact of Kevin Durant and the Brooklyn Nets getting swept by Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown and the Boston Celtics. What does that do to the landscape? Could big changes in Brooklyn cause a domino effect throughout the league that forces teams to change their offseason plans? (Like, perhaps Ben Simmons and/or Kyrie Irving being put on the trade block?) The Trail Blazers will almost certainly have access to the full Mid-Level Exception (~$10.3m) this summer. What players and/or position groups might they look to target? Invest it all in a back up 5-man like Mo Bamba or Thomas Bryant? Target a 3⁄4 like Kyle Anderson or TJ Warren? Or maybe they split it up and focus on a younger, potential upswing player like Jalen Smith and paying a bit more than a vet minimum to outbid other teams for depth elsewhere? While the class of free agents isn't great, Portland is motivated to get back on track after a “gap year” situation. After losing out on the New Orleans Pelicans' lottery pick there's less room for error around the rest of the roster. So tap in as the guys go over and debate which way the Blazers could go with the tools at their disposal. SUBSCRIBE: YouTube, Twitch, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google and Anywhere You Get Podcasts! One of the most talked about topic today in the fantasy world is Omer Yurtseven. He went from averaging a double double the past few weeks to a DNP-CD on the first game back of Bam Adebayo. So what now? Do we drop or is this just a "rest" game? He played too well to just get 0 minutes, so I think owners should give him a game more to see if he is indeed a drop. Another center problem is Daniel Gafford. Week 12 is a wrap and fantasy basketball analysts Dan Titus and Adam Koffler recap some notable things that happened in the last week and look ahead at Week 13. In this week's episode, Titus and Koffler preview the most and least favorable team schedules in the fantasy basketball playoffs. They also discuss why you should be actively targeting Raptors and Bulls players, while potentially shopping some of your favorite Bucks and Grizzlies. Both Kyrie Irving and Klay Thompson made their returns in Week 12. How should fantasy managers react? Thompson's minutes will likely be limited at first, but he's a prolific scorer. Meanwhile, Irving can only play in away games, greatly capping his fantasy value going forward. Is it time to test the market on Kyrie while you can? And Kyle Kuzma has been rolling, but is it time to cash in before Thomas Bryant, Montrezl Harrell, and Rui Hachimura all return and get up to full speed?
