With training camp set to open in a week - I think we're ALL ready for that - it's fascinating to consider where they are now vs. where things were at this point last year. A year ago, the Lakers were still in play for Buddy Hield and Myles Turner from the Pacers. We were all still wondering if the Lakers really were going to enter the season with Russell Westbrook even while Darvin Ham was saying all the right stuff. Today? While the Lakers have questions and concerns (as all teams do) nobody has to squint or twist themselves into pretzels to feel genuine optimism about where this season could go. There is no leaning into best case scenarios. Instead, this is a group that, if healthy, should be very good. With real balance up and down the roster. That's basically it. And it's really great! If there's a spot that shows the contrast between last year and this season, it's in the guard rotation. Last year, there was Russ and Reaves, Patrick Beverley, Lonnie Walker IV, a rookie Max Christie, plus Kendrick Nunn coming off an injury. That's a lot of question marks. And even while someone like Walker had some good moments and overall played just fine (relative to expectations), it's worth noting that only two of those players finished the season on the roster, and only one actually played a role. This year, Reaves will be joined by D'Angelo Russell and Gabe Vincent to form a very solid core of guards (given that the team's star power is in the front court). With them, you'll hopefully see Christie, and then hopefully not that much Jalen Hood-Schifino (because that means things have gone incredibly right, or really wrong, and the latter would be far more likely in this scenario). It's hard to overstate how much better a place they're in. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: What a difference a year makes. SEGMENT 2: Breaking down the guards. SEGMENT 3: More analysis of the guards. Who starts, who finishes? What of Christie? Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Patrick Beverley is an amazing NBA story having gone from overseas to a 12 year career but what happened before all that is just as fascinating. The All-NBA player was on the verge of a deadened life when something tragic turned everything around.
According to ESPN's Ramona Shelburne, there are "multiple" teams interested in trading for James Harden. This is the first time a report has claimed that any team other than the Clippers has showed interest. Also, former Sixers coach Doc Rivers has found himself a new gig. Lastly, recent free agent signing Patrick Beverley avoided a huge tragedy. The Lakers officially welcomed nearly all of their free agent signees on Thursday, putting pen to paper with all but D'Angelo Russell, who appears to be on vacation. Nothing unexpected, but it feels like the official start of something new, nonetheless. So with that in mind, which of the free agents are the most consequential? Among the new players, is it Gabe Vincent? He was certainly the highest profile acquisition (and cost the most money). Or maybe Taurean Prince? What exactly has changed from last year to this one, based on who the Lakers have brought in/retained? It wasn't that long ago the Lakers were lining up Patrick Beverley on opposing wings because they didn't have the length to throw at them. Even with the center position still a question mark, that type of imbalance is a thing of the past. Meanwhile, Austin Reaves might now be on the most team-friendly non-rookie deal in the league. Why didn't anyone else make an offer? Did the Lakers just get lucky? Finally, there is plenty of drama around the NBA, when it comes to superstars looking for new homes. Whether James Harden or Damian Lillard, the possibility of blockbuster deals is certainly generating plenty of attention. Except the Lakers aren't involved in any of it, which is certainly not the norm. Even when rumors don't exactly make sense, the Lakers are usually tied to talks about superstar trades. Not this year. Why? Well, some of it is LeBron, some of it is context, much of it is math... and maybe the Lakers are just operating a little differently? (Was that theory actually tested this offseason?) HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: The Lakers ink their free agents. Which of the new guys is most important? SEGMENT 2: Why didn't Austin Reaves get his big $ offer? SEGMENT 3: There's plenty of drama around the league, but none of it is reaching El Segundo. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! On today's episode, Jason kicks things off by trying to make sense of the some blasphemy spewed out by Patrick Beverley and Karl-Anthony Towns in a recent podcast interview. Does anybody really view KAT as a game changer in the historical sense? More imporantly, what kind of person actually believes that simply making the playoffs is more impressive than winning the championship? Craziness all around. Later, J-Mac does a deep dive on Oakland A's owner John Fisher and his plans to move the team to Las Vegas. The truth of the matter is this is just the latest example of a capitalist taking advantage of a socialist system. It's something that's become all too common in today's society, and even more so in American team sports. Finally, Jason closes the show by discussing the latest rumors surrounding Zion Williamson. It makes a ton of sense for the New Orleans Pelicans to want to move on from their oft-injured forward, but do they have the stomach to actually pull the trigger? The Lakers started a five game road trip on Wednesday in Chicago, the very team that beat the snot out of them on Sunday, in a very disappointing afternoon for the purple and gold. With only seven games left, the Lakers needed to start the trip strong, and get some revenge. And that's exactly what they did, winning 121-110 in a game they started strong and (save a couple minor lulls) controlled throughout. Particularly when the starting lineup - LeBron, Anthony Davis, D'Angelo Russell (he's back!), Austin Reaves and Jarred Vanderbilt was on the floor. That group was dominant in the minutes they played together. It looked great, but would Darvin Ham still benefit from tweaking things a little? In reality, when Davis plays with the type of energy and force he did on Wednesday, it might not matter how Ham deploys his role guys. Davis was excellent from the jump, getting off to a strong start in the game and finishing with 38 points on 13-20 from the floor. LeBron, still under a minutes restriction (that is clearly somewhere around 30) was an efficient 10-19 for 25 points. Russell and Reaves combined for 36. Without being Pollyannish, that starting five, if healthy, is not one any team in the West would be all that excited to face in a playoff series. Not to say the Lakers are primed to make a run to the Finals, and are capable of winning four rounds (an odd thing to say about a team with no guarantee of even making the playoffs), but one round against any team in the West? Yeah, no question. Meanwhile, the Lakers (and definitely Lakers fans) could take some joy in a terrible game from Patrick Beverley, and Reaves managed to make himself even more popular among Lakers fans by giving Bev the "too small" after hitting a jumper over him in the fourth. Well played! Finally, the Lakers have a Malik Beasley problem. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Anthony Davis leads the Lakers to a big win. SEGMENT 2: That starting lineup is one that could be scary if it stays healthy. SEGMENT 3: Austin Reaves throws trash talk back at Pat Bev, and the Lakers have a Beasley problem.
