With training camp set to open in a week - I think we're ALL ready for that - it's fascinating to consider where they are now vs. where things were at this point last year. A year ago, the Lakers were still in play for Buddy Hield and Myles Turner from the Pacers. We were all still wondering if the Lakers really were going to enter the season with Russell Westbrook even while Darvin Ham was saying all the right stuff. Today? While the Lakers have questions and concerns (as all teams do) nobody has to squint or twist themselves into pretzels to feel genuine optimism about where this season could go. There is no leaning into best case scenarios. Instead, this is a group that, if healthy, should be very good. With real balance up and down the roster. That's basically it. And it's really great! If there's a spot that shows the contrast between last year and this season, it's in the guard rotation. Last year, there was Russ and Reaves, Patrick Beverley, Lonnie Walker IV, a rookie Max Christie, plus Kendrick Nunn coming off an injury. That's a lot of question marks. And even while someone like Walker had some good moments and overall played just fine (relative to expectations), it's worth noting that only two of those players finished the season on the roster, and only one actually played a role. This year, Reaves will be joined by D'Angelo Russell and Gabe Vincent to form a very solid core of guards (given that the team's star power is in the front court). With them, you'll hopefully see Christie, and then hopefully not that much Jalen Hood-Schifino (because that means things have gone incredibly right, or really wrong, and the latter would be far more likely in this scenario). The overwhelming consensus this offseason among pundits, fans, and seemingly LeBron James, was that the Lakers did quite well for themselves in free agency. At worst, they maintained a nice status quo. At best, they even improved. But was there perhaps a better route that could have been pursued, with more big picture flexibility? Anthony Irwin, host of the Lakers Lounge Podcast and Substack author, thinks so. In Irwin's opinion, the Lakers could have set themselves up better with an approach that meant going into the luxury tax, losing full mid-level exception (and by extension, access to Gabe Vincent), and keeping Malik Beasley and Mo Bamba on the roster as expiring contracts for a potential in-season mega-deal. NBA free agency kicks off Friday at 3 pm PT, and while the Lakers aren't likely to be first out of the gate—that tends to be the teams with real dollars to spend—they'll most certainly be paying close attention to where the first wave of players land, and who might be left over. A big (or bigger than the Lakers can make, at least) offer to someone like Dennis Schröder could change the landscape a little, too, because it might mean the taxpayer mid-level exception people expect the Lakers to use (and currently, in theory, earmarked for Schröder) would go somewhere else. The Lakers took a lot of the drama out of Friday's closeout game at the Crypt against Golden State, getting out on a big run in the first quarter and never letting the lead get away. A 10 point lead at the half was stretched out in the third, and the Warriors never really threatened after. Final score, 122-101. Lakers win the series 4-2, and will advance to face the Nuggets in the Western Conference Finals starting Tuesday in Denver. This was a great game for the Lakers. LeBron James got off to a great start, and played his best game of the series (30 points on 10-14 from the floor). Anthony Davis was a monster defensively and on the boards (20 rebounds). Austin Reaves had 23 points, including 4-5 from downtown. 13 from Lonnie Walker IV, 19 from D'Angelo Russell. Just a total, complete team effort, putting a cap on a series the Lakers won, by NBA playoff standards, relatively easily. Can they keep it up in the next round against the top seeded Nuggets? Yes, though the level of play required to get through to the Finals will need to be a tick above what they've shown to this point, impressive as it's been. The Lakers had success in Game 1 by playing certain matchups that seemed to catch the Warriors off guard - starting Jarred Vanderbilt on Steph Curry, for example. And in Game 3, the Lakers came back with a host of changes. Vanderbilt was switched off of Curry and onto Draymond Green, letting Anthony Davis check (and essentially ignore) JaMychal Green and have more freedom to roam defensively. And, of course, Lonnie Walker IV got the minutes that had been going to Troy Brown Jr., a significant change in the rotation that paid real dividends. So with the Lakers up 2-1 going into tonight's Game 4, how much credit does Ham get for LA's good showing thus far? It's been a fairly controversial season for the first year head coach, and he's certainly under the microscope. Should people expect more changes for Game 4? The Lakers looked awful in Game 2 upstate, and needed to bounce back in a big way Saturday night in Game 3. And bounce back they did. Anthony Davis returned to his big game ways, with 25 points, 13 rebounds, three steals and four blocks. LeBron James, who didn't take a shot in the first quarter and didn't play in the fourth, still finished with 21 points on 6-11 from the floor, and 7-8 from the line. D'Angelo Russell carried the Lakers offensively in the first half, and finished with 21 points. Lonnie Walker IV, getting the Troy Brown minutes, gave the Lakers 12 points in 24 minutes. Overall, the Lakers got back to the line, limited turnovers, and actually made 3-pointers (48.4%). And when that happens, it's really hard to beat them. Especially when the defense is cranked up to the level it was on Saturday. Yes, the Warriors missed some shots they might often make (or did at least on Thursday), but the Lakers were very active, and found a level of aggression coming higher out on the floor to interrupt GSW's pick and rolls, without losing interior coverage. The Lakers hit a wall on Wednesday, missing shots and falling short against a highly motivated Memphis Grizzlies squad in Game 5. LeBron James looked tired, but vowed to be better in Game 6. And surely the Crypto.com Arena crowd will be jacked up for the first closeout game the fans have seen in a very, very long time. One key will be keeping that energy flowing throughout, and not allowing the Grizzlies the ability to put fear into nearly 20,000 folks. It'll help for the Lakers to hit some shots, because these sub-30% 3-point nights aren't gonna get it done. It'll help to force some turnovers, and create easy buckets. It'll help for LeBron to do good stuff early, after a really bad night on Wednesday. And would it also help if Darvin Ham tweaked the rotation? There have been many, many calls for Ham to quit running with the small lineups while Anthony Davis is off the floor, where LeBron or Rui Hachimura is playing center, and the Lakers are undersized. Those small bench lineups were hammered in Game 5. But what's the right solution? Is it to play Wenyen Gabriel more? Mo Bamba? What about those minutes going to Malik Beasley? Should they instead go to Lonnie Walker IV, or should both guys sit and the rotation get a little shorter? Plenty of choices, and in a tight series, they matter. It's taken more than a year, but the Lakers have returned to the .500 mark. Behind a huge game from Anthony Davis (37 points, 15-21 shooting) on a night the Lakers badly needed it (no LeBron, and D'Angelo Russell was a late scratch with a bad hip), Davis provided a bonafide superstar performance, playing well from the first quarter to the end. He had company, too! Lonnie Walker IV, given a chance to play thanks to the Russell injury, took advantage of the opportunity, scoring 20 points and hitting half of his eight 3-point attempts. Darvin Ham let him close the game, a nice show of trust in a guy who earned the opportunity, based on his play Friday, but hadn't been in the rotation for a while. Dennis Schröder was great down the stretch, Jarred Vanderbilt made Shai Gilgeous-Alexander work for each of his 27 points, and overall the Lakers defense was nails in the second half. LA only scored 43 points in the final 24 minutes, but held OKC to 19 in the fourth. That's gettin' it done. With the win, the Lakers are now in a tie with Minnesota for the 7-seed in the West, with Chicago coming to the Crypt on Sunday. The Lakers, according to the fine folks at Tankathon (and by other measurements as well) have the league's easiest schedule down the stretch. That includes tonight's game against a hobbled New Orleans squad, and Wednesday against the Rockets, who are awful. They see the Bulls twice, get a beat up Dallas team, the Suns (at least once) without Kevin Durant and the Magic. By the time the schedule grants two games against Utah, the Jazz may or may not still be playing for a playoff berth. (Of course, they're saying the same thing about the Lakers on Locked On Jazz.) So the idea they could be playing significant games down the stretch, even understanding that LeBron is going to miss a huge chunk of time, isn't at all far-fetched. Not given how the Lakers have played since the NBA's trade deadline, Sunday's loss notwithstanding. To get there, they need top shelf performances from Anthony Davis, and on days where he's anything less, elevated performances from the supporting cast. They didn't get the latter on Sunday, particularly from Malik Beasley, who has struggled mightily since joining the purple and gold. Like, from everywhere around the floor. Is he in danger of losing playing time to someone like Lonnie Walker IV? What would it take for that to happen? Would the Lakers be better off? And how about Darvin Ham? His coaching choices have been a point of scrutiny for Lakers fans all season. On Sunday, he was criticized for sitting D'Angelo Russell and Davis at the same time, on a night where the other dudes weren't up to the task. So is he, in his rookie season as a head coach, capable of navigating a situation in which pretty much every string he pulls needs to be the right one? It's a tough spot to be in.
