How many times have you heard the phrase - “Well, it’s not exactly rocket science” when someone is referring to something as easy? I guess that means that we associate those who actually ARE rocket scientists with being exceptionally smart. And while that’s probably true - actually it IS true - the reality is that you and I can think like a rocket scientist, without actually having to send anything into space. So, just how do rocket scientists think? And how can you and I apply that thinking to our work and our lives in order to increase our impact? My guest on Episode 47 of the Impact Makers Podcast has an idea. In fact, he’s been there, done that, and has written the book on it. Ozan Varol is a rocket scientist turned award-winning professor and #1 bestselling author. He’s also one of the world’s foremost experts in creativity, innovation, and critical thinking. Ozan grew up in Istanbul, Turkey, learned English as his second language, and moved to the United States by himself at the age of 17 to attend Cornell University and major in astrophysics in order to achieve his dream of becoming an American astronaut. While attending Cornell, he served on the operations team for the 2003 Mars Exploration Rovers project that sent two rovers – Spirit and Opportunity – to Mars. Then in a surprising twist, ditched his dream to become an astronaut, and chose to attend law school instead, where - in true rocket scientist form - he graduated first in his class, earning the highest grade point average in the school’s history. After practicing law for a few years, he decided to join the ranks of academia at Lewis & Clark Law School in beautiful Portland, Oregon, where he became a law professor, with a goal of influencing others to make giant leaps on Earth. In April 2020, Ozan’s book - Think Like a Rocket Scientist: Simple Strategies You Can Use to Make Giant Leaps in Work and Life - was published, and it was recently named one Inc.com’s 6 Business Books You Need to Read in 2020. It’s also listed as one of Amazon’s Top 20 books of 2020 in three categories (non-fiction, business, and science), and was chosen as the number one pick on noted author Adam Grant’s list of the top 20 leadership books of 2020. I recently connected with Ozan, and have enjoyed learning from him through his popular weekly emails, and I’m challenging myself to apply the 9 strategies in his book to make giant leaps in my work and in my life. I think you’ll get a lot of great takeaways from my conversation with Ozan today, and you can find links in the show notes to connect with him, buy the book, and sign up for his weekly email that shares one big idea that you can read in 3 minutes or less. Topics Discussed In This Episode: Why moonshot thinking can produce great results - even if you don’t reach what you’re aiming for. What we can learn from snakes that can create space for new ideas to emerge. The importance of just starting - and not waiting until everything is in place - to facilitate the emergence of new ideas. The benefits of moonshot thinking during times of chaos and uncertainty. How looking at the assumptions in your life and applying first principles thinking can generate original insights. 3 ways to open up your mind to allow for moonshot thinking - even if you don’t consider yourself a visionary thinker. What George Costanza and rocket scientists have in common - and what you can learn from both. The power of putting yourself into “Airplane Mode”, and why doing nothing is more valuable than you think. This week I’m talking to Hillary Kinavey, co-founder of Be Nourished. They offer programs for people looking to reclaim Body Trust®. She's a leader in this movement, working from the principles of HAES and intuitive eating. We've been talking a lot about the stages of a rebel business lately. I did a 2 part series, episodes 118 and 119, on the stages you go through from creating your pilot offer to actually thriving. You're about to hear from someone who really values the long game. She and her co-founder, Dana Sturtevant, have always paid attention to the long game because Body Trust is something they care deeply about. They don't want to make money and then get out. They've been setting things up along the way in order to stay in this for several decades. They've been building this for 15 years, and they're still looking way ahead, paying attention to where this movement is going and what kind of impact they want to have. They're also paying attention to how they need to take care of themselves so that they can stay in for the long haul. As you're listening to this episode, think about what would sustain you in your business. What kind of support do you need? What kinds of people do you need to spend time with? What kinds of self-care practices do you need to invest time and money in? What do you need to say no to in order to say yes to what really matters to you? Topics Discussed In This Episode: Why she's loved having a business partner for 15 years How they developed their programs, starting with in-person groups and growing to several offers Why and how they developed a certification program for providers Making a salary in this business for the first time in the last year What she spends her time on in the business Hiring 3 employees and creating a workflow Taking the long view on this business and her impact on this movement How they grow their audience How she brings pleasure into moments throughout her day Show notes at http://rebeltherapist.me/podcast/120

You are a being of light, literally and biophysically. Your cells emit biophotons, or ultra-weak ultraviolet light, which then trigger the process of mitosis. So the thing that we’re told causes skin cancer is the same thing that our cells are using to signal cell division, a foundational piece of biological function. Our guest, Matt Maruca, is fascinated by seeming contradictions like this — when what we’re told by the leading authorities seems to contradict logic and common sense — and then he starts asking questions. Matt’s investigation of light led him to founding Ra Optics, makers of the world's finest blue light blocking glasses, and creating The Light Diet, a diet that directly addresses the root of the modern chronic disease epidemic and mitochondrial dysfunction. But he’s not done yet, and today, we invite you to start asking some questions, too. We need to start getting intentional about the light in our homes, in our workplaces, in our children’s schools, and in our cities — and we need to start doing something soon. Because the battle between sunlight and junk light just might be the battle that decides the health of future generations. This isn’t just for you. This is for your mitochondria, your children, and your children’s children. Topics Discussed In This Episode: Why you’re probably ejactulating too much & how ejaculation is diminishing the pleasure of your orgasms How Matt’s first appearance on this show changed the trajectory of his life The energy meditation practice that can help you cultivate your inner light Your body is a being of light — and there’s science to prove it How blue light debilitates your mitochondria There are three million people who in the U.S. who die every year to chronic diseases — and none of them need to, but we aren’t addressing the right problems Do hereditary diseases really exist? The missing link between chronic diseases, the epidemic of depression, and mass shootings How and when to eat if you want to lose weight (and why the way you’re eating now is probably causing you to gain weight) Junk food doesn’t make you fat (by itself) — junk light does Why Luke is eating a butter stick during this interview How artificial light is absorbed into every part of your body, not just your eyes, and what you can do to prevent it How we are destroying a generation’s physical development through smartphones and tablets Have an indoor lifestyle? Get ready for an indoor hospital Why windows are bad There IS such a thing as too much sun, but it’s pretty difficult to do — while most of us don’t get enough sun and are suffering for it Why you maybe shouldn’t have a kid if you don’t have a sex drive What The Light Diet is & how you can start integrating it into your life How to hack your morning routine to make The Light Diet easier Blue blocking software is great and you should definitely use it — but no software can eliminate all of the blue light from your screens How to make sure your food and water are supporting your health More about this episode. Sarah Argenal is on a mission to eradicate the burnout epidemic that is crushing working parents. She offers programs to individuals and organizations to integrate mental and emotional support for parents in the workplace. She walks parents through a 4 step framework to craft a life. I see a theme here that I want you to pay close attention to. Sarah's 4 part framework is something that she has created and nurtured, and it's something she is becoming known for. Having a framework you can use to help you describe your work AND help people is a huge asset. It's your message AND it's your way of serving. Sarah didn't just stumble on this 4 part framework. She discovered and created it through observing herself and the thousands of parents she talked to. Now she's able to use that framework everywhere. She talks about it in podcast episodes. She talks about it in public speaking. She teaches it in workshops. She uses it in all of her content. She goes deep into one of the steps at times, and she sometimes gives an overview of all 4. This is an asset that she can build her business around. Listen to how Sarah is leveraging this asset. An asset like this can't be rushed. But time and energy you put into creating it is well invested. My business has doubled since I discovered and began to nurture my Rebel Therapist™ brand. It's what I'm becoming known for. When I think about the individual rebels I work with, I see that they hit that hockey stick on the growth chart when they get clear on their message and what they want to be known for. Sarah shares a lot of gems in this interview, but if you remember ONE thing, remember what she has to say about finding the work and message she wants to be known for. Topics Discussed In This Episode: Why she focuses on helping working parents recover from burnout Having 2 tracks to her business: private work with parents and work with organizations How she customizes her 4-step framework for many different contexts Deciding to be known for one thing How she structures her online coaching program Creating workbooks to use within her program Using voxer as an extra support in her coaching How Annie and Sarah both manage time around between session support How she brings in private clients and how she brings in organizational clients Creating several different free offers and a marketing ecosystem Her advice for her former self Just in time learning rather than just in case learning Show notes at http://rebeltherapist.me/podcast/107
THIS WEEK: This week I’m featuring Jacquette Timmons, a financial behaviorist in New York City. We focused on two areas: how she prices her offerings and how she builds and nurtures her audience. If you're working on expanding your business beyond the therapy room, those are two areas you know require a lot of thought and attention. If you don't pay attention to them, your business can't thrive, even if your work is amazing. As we get into pricing, listen for how Jacquette combines trial and error with a careful process. She factors in everything including her expenses, what the outcomes are that she's providing, the value her clients place on that outcome, the time and energy the offer requires, and more. AND like I said, she allows for trial and error. You may think being methodical and using trial and error are mutually exclusive. Nope. Like Jacquette, I always leave room for experimentation. The first time I ran what is now Rebel Therapist, the cost was 1400, it happened over 8 sessions, and I had 3 amazing participants all who I'd worked with before. Now the program is in a different iteration. It's a 2-day workshop, 4 and a half hours each day, and the fee as of this recording is 1000. Different format, different price. And that price will likely go up. You'll also hear how Jacqette builds and nurtures her audience. She has remained steadfast in her message and her mission even when others weren't ready to hear it. As a therapist moving your work beyond the therapy room, she's talking right to you. As she talks about staying steadfast in her message, think about what the messages you want to share. Is there something edgy that you find not everyone is ready to hear? Listen to Jacquette's experience with this. Another thing that stands out about how Jacquette builds and nurtures her audience is that she's not afraid to go deep. Rather than doing what everyone else seems to be doing, she has gone for depth. Her free content isn't quick or superficial. It takes a minute, and that has paid off. As you listen, think about how that might work for you in the business you build beyond the therapy room. How can you create content that is truly valuable and engaging? Topics Discussed In This Episode: Why managing money is really about managing choices The combination fo services she offers, including private and corporate work Hosting The Comfort Circle™ Diners Why she doesn't believe in charging "what you're worth" How she chooses her prices How she builds her audience by showing up consistently Staying steadfast with her message even when it was unpopular Going deep with her free content How she creates synergy with all of her content marketing Starting her podcast, More Than Money Two pieces of advice for her former self Show notes at http://rebeltherapist.me/podcast/106
I have a treat to share with you today: four of the world’s foremost biohacking experts getting vulnerable at the end of a long day and asking each other the questions that most people don’t even know they should be asking. We have friend of the show Jack Kruse, a neurosurgeon, the CEO of Optimized Life, and our front lines against the onslaught of EMFs. We have Aaron Alexander, an accomplished manual therapist and movement coach, creator of the Align Method™, an integrated approach to functional movement and self-care that has helped thousands of people out of pain and into health, and host of Align Podcast. And, last but not least, we have Matt Maruca, one of the world’s youngest biohackers, founder of Ra Optics, and a man on a mission to end chronic disease by addressing mitochondrial dysfunction. So, basically, it’s four guys freaking out in a hotel room about all of the things going wrong in the world right now – and what you can do to protect yourself, or at the very least, minimize the damage if you live in a big city. But this is only part one of this conversation. After you’re done, head over to alignpodcast.com/podcast to check out part two! Topics Discussed In This Episode: Why you need to be wary of how the world is lit around you Humans’ hot and cold relationship with electricity Why we don’t have any energy to waste in our artificially lit, frequency-laden world We have the ability to “believe away” reality – and this can both be a benefit and a curse What you can do to optimize the biggest toxic soup you can ever imagine: a big city hotel room Are cell phones the next cigarettes... or worse? Why the materials you put in your pockets and on your body may become dangerous around 5G How both sides of the federal government are entangled in the dissemination of harmful frequencies The difference between the Gs (4G, 5G, etc) & why 5G is such a big deal Getting “disappeared” on social media How technology is directly influencing the evolution of humans Leveraging energy psychology to practice super learning More about this episode. This is a show about parenting, featuring not only one of my all-time favorite authors but also one of the best parents I’ve ever watched in action. When he wants to learn about, or write about something meaningful to him, he becomes quite literally obsessed, and at this stage in his life, it’s all about becoming the best father he can possibly be. Neil Strauss’s books are not only educational, hilarious, emotionally touching, but also quite addictive. Over the many years I’ve been reading them, they’ve made me laugh, cry, and change my life for the better – and no matter what he writes about, I can’t put his books down until I’ve greedily inhaled every single word. Neil co-wrote some of the best biographies of our time, but he’s best known for The Game, which follows his journey infiltrating the pickup artist subculture and learning how to be one. This segued into teaching other guys pickup artistry, which had its ups and its downs, ultimately culminating in a sequel of sorts called The Truth: An Uncomfortable Book About Relationships. At the time, The Truth seemed like a conclusive end to Neil’s hero’s journey, in which he lost his love and then won it back. But now, a few years later, we can see that the story isn’t over. Our complex relationships with relationships can’t be neatly wrapped up in a Campbellian journey, and this is a truth that I think we all come to realize eventually. So today, Neil shares what this next step of his journey looks like: the end of a marriage, the beginning of a non-romantic relationship with the mother of his child, the new paradigm of conscious parenting, and dating while he navigates the complexities of it all. Since Neil has yet to write a book on parenting, I was thrilled to be able to sit down and have him share all he has learned so far about being the best dad he can be. Topics Discussed In This Episode: Why the key to changing the world is healthy parenting Maintaining a great relationship with the other parent of your child, even when the romantic relationships ends A big myth about relationships Why “staying together for the kids” is a backwards plan that doesn’t produce healthy, loving role models Developing a mature relationship with monogamy How The Truth changed Luke’s life A sure way to kill any romantic relationship: turning your partner into a parent The mistakes that most parents make – and the ones that we can avoid The moment Neil learned that he was going to have a kid (also the first time he ever hoped a pregnancy test would come back positive) The books and experts that have taught Neil the most about parenting Why Neil keeps a diary for his son How a parent can create boundaries and not get enmeshed with their child, while still being loving and intimate with them You’re not always going to be your kid’s friend – and that’s okay! How to avoid teaching your children to medicate their emotions The Continuum Concept & parenting The roles that people take on in dysfunctional families Why conscious parenting is the most important thing you can do in your life Neil’s new podcast, To Live and Die in LA, about the disappearance of aspiring actress Adea Shabani More about this episode. In this episode, we dive deep into the big, scary existential questions: What is the meaning of life? Why do bad things happen to good people? Where do we go when we die? And most of all, why are we humans so full of fear so much of the time, and how can we finally free ourselves from it? Join us as we approach the human condition of fear-based living from the perspective of the ancient teachings of Kabbalah with Monica Berg, bestselling author and CCO of The Kabbalah Centre. When her second child was diagnosed with Down Syndrome shortly after his birth, Monica was forced to reevaluate her belief systems. The diagnosis led to Monica’s credo, “In change, there is great power,” and the choice to believe in the beauty and potential of who her son could become and subsequently who she could become, in the absence of fear. In this courageous and inspiring conversation, we cover some hard-to-tackle subjects like religious hypocrisy, shame, sin, parenthood, partnership, and the three types of fear (healthy, real, and illogical). We’ll even talk about the time Luke laid down in a freshly-dug grave to contemplate the temporal nature of his current bodily incarnation. Let’s do this. Topics Discussed In This Episode: Why bad things happen to good people How Monica’s son Joshua’s Down Syndrome diagnosis made Monica a better, more empathetic person How you can release unnecessary shame tied to the idea of “sin” How to joyfully connect with loved ones experiencing Alzheimer's The goal of life: to leave the world completely different than how you arrived What you have to gain – or lose – from the three types of fear The benefits of contemplating the temporary nature of your current human incarnation How to mute your fear of death by focusing on living your best, most compassionate life The big choice: either letting your ego lead or letting your soul lead How to shift your perspective and look for the gift in everything The relationship between the material world (the 1% reality) vs. the nonmaterial world (the 99% reality) The ultimate currency: the desire to receive for the sake of sharing How to claim your power to earn all of the joy and fulfillment you are seeking We are all either growing forward or growing backwards; it’s up to us The five Kabbalistic levels of the soul Our responsibility to reveal our best selves It’s not about what happens; it’s about what you do with what happens Religious hypocrisy The Zohar: a key to decode ancient Jewish and Christian texts How to utilize Kabbalistic astrology to become a better parent and partner What’s at the core of every fear Living on purpose The difference between fear and anxiety Monica’s seven steps to completely and utterly conquering your fear More about this episode. Living in big cities is fun, convenient, and provides us with endless opportunities in life that do not exist in most rural areas. However, these benefits come at a cost. I understand that most city folk can’t just all up and move to the middle of nowhere (although that certainly sounds appealing sometimes). However, we have to do SOMETHING if we want to minimize the threats that city life poses to our health and well-being. This episode is part of an urban biohacking workshop I shared at Next Health, the health optimization center founded by our previous guest Dr. Darshan Shah. I discuss the three most significant issues we’re all dealing with and the hacks you can use to bring a little bit of nature to big city living. The topic of the evening was biohacking city life- specifically your water, and light. We evolved to live in harmony with nature, just like any other animal on this Earth. And when you look at animals in the wild, they live following solar and lunar cycles, east a diet consisting of natural, wild foods, and drink natural waters delivered by nature. Animals in the wild (as well as the very few humans left living in the wild) know how to thrive in harmony with nature. The fact is that unless you have the desire and means to live completely off-grid, off the land, there is no way to go back in time to a more holistic and straightforward life way. But what we can do is use practices and technologies that create a facsimile of that natural environment in our modern world – what you might call a Paleolithic lifestyle. Are you feeling the effects of living the city life? Do you feel the stress caused by the toxic water, light, and EMF frequencies surrounding you? Want a healthier way to cope than fear? If we are to maintain our urban lifestyles and thrive even when the odds are stacked against our biology, we need to have a simple, yet powerful strategy by which to live. This episode is a great starting point for your urban biohacking blueprint. Topics Discussed In This Episode: Why we should be thinking about the water we put in our bodies before we start figuring out the best diets and workout routines The best form of water that we can put in our bodies Why you definitely want more than just a Brita filter on your faucet How to get the cleanest water possible in your apartment or house, for both drinking and bathing Why sunscreen is increasing your chance of getting cancer, not decreasing it How the artificial light going into your eyes confuses your body almost every minute of every day The best antidepressant in the world Why light is the ultimate vitamin The 3 types of EMFs currently bombarding your body while you’re home Why awareness is healthier than fear The insanity of holding a cell phone up to your head How to eliminate dangerous wifi signals in your home The benefits of building your own Faraday bed More about this episode. The U.S. “healthcare system” is a misnomer – because, in reality, it’s a disease care system that doesn’t try to help people until they’re already sick. Frustrated with the status quo, world-renowned surgeon and anti-aging expert Dr. Darshan Shah decided to found Next|Health, where they help people live a more proactive, empowered, and healthy lifestyle, thereby minimizing the need for traditional reactive medical services. It’s pretty much a biohacker’s oasis. Having people like Dr. Shah leading the charge for alternative medicine treatment is so critical because we’re making more potentially life-changing discoveries every year than we did in a decade back in the 20th century. As the rate of growth of medical knowledge gets exponentially higher, new treatments and methodologies need to be tested, validated, and practiced by people who know what the heck they’re doing. If you want to know what these up-and-coming treatments are – and the cutting-edge technology you can start using now to level up your health – you have to hear Dr. Shah’s wisdom. Topics Discussed In This Episode: Why this Western-trained MD chose to start incorporating alternative medicine in his practice How the dysfunctional “disease care” industry led to the creation of Next|Health The most cutting-edge biohacks that Dr. Shah is doing & that you have to try How lobbyists started so many American “health” trends Why educating yourself is your responsibility & your first line of defense against the malicious misinformation coming from official sources The terrifying lack of education that traditional doctors receive when it comes to nutrition How artificial intelligence is changing the way we learn about health The 3 technologies that are revolutionizing the anti-aging process What you need to know about the different types and effects of cryotherapy The relationship between mitochondria and addiction Does taking vitamins or mineral IVs ruin your body’s own production? What are the negative impacts of EMFs? Why you might want stem cell therapy The most important biomarker testings you can do to assess and take control of your health: telomeres, genetic testing, heavy metals, thyroid testing, and beyond. How allergies and food sensitivities happen and how you can test yours Where your hormone levels should be & what you can do if they’re off Is there any risk to vanity / beauty treatments like botox?
