Born and raised in Colombia, moved to the USA at the age of 21, after earning a software engineering degree in Colombia thanks to a full academic scholarship that transformed her life. Monica started her IT career in Texas, gaining experience with custom application development and digital modernization initiatives, and later became a Consultant for Oracle, where she traveled across the US and Europe leading enterprise-scale global projects. Her immigrant background and journey to the US was a strong motivation to start MAS Global, a mid-sized Agile software development and IT services company based in Florida with nearshore development hubs in Medellin, Colombia, with close to 200 employees in 4 countries, and strategic partner to Fortune500 corporations. Monica and MAS Global have earned several industry recognitions, including Deloitte Fast500 as one of the 500 fastest-growing technology companies in North America. Monica is an advocate and mentor for women and Latinos in technology, believes in giving back, has supported scholarships for women in technology just as the one she received, and is a frequent speaker at industry events in the US and Colombia. Most recently, she started a foundation called MAS Futuro as part of MAS Global's commitment to community impact and to continue to deliver on the promise that MAS is More. What you'll learn about in this episode: How winning an academic scholarship at twenty-one changed Monica's life What Monica did to overcome the challenges of adapting to a new culture after spending her entire life in Colombia How Monica found the strength to ask for help when she needed it most What female entrepreneurs can do to accelerate their path to success How Monica has been able to thrive as a Latina and a female in the software engineering field What Monica is doing to give back to the community with her new foundation, MAS Futuro Resources: Website: https://www.masglobalconsulting.com/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/monicamhernandez/ https://www.linkedin.com/company/mas-global-consulting Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/MASGlobalCo/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/masglobalco Accelerate Your Path to Success Monica Hernandez is a software engineer turned CEO with more than twenty years of experience in the technology space. Her immigrant background and journey to the US was a strong motivation to start MAS Global, a mid-sized Agile software development and IT services company based in Florida. On top of the HQ, Monica's operation also has nearshore development hubs in Medellin, Colombia, with close to 200 employees in 4 countries. In this episode of the Intentional Greatness podcast, Monica joins us to share her story and talk about what it took to make it as a female and a Latina in the software engineering field. Replanting the Roots When Monica was just twenty-one years old, she moved to the United States after winning an academic scholarship for software engineering that landed her in Texas. This opportunity would lead to careers in custom application development and digital modernization initiatives, and eventually, technology consulting. But before Monica found her stride in such a heavily male-dominated field, she had to overcome her fears of being an outsider. She had to navigate the challenges of adapting to a new culture after spending her entire life in Colombia. She had to rebuild the community around her and stay in tune with the inherent abilities that brought her there in the first place. Luckily, Monica learned to listen to her intuition early on, and as we all know, that is a superpower in and of itself. It's Okay to Ask for Help Monica's strong sense of intuition helped her immensely throughout her career, but she did not make Deloitte's Fast500 list as one of the 500 fastest-growing technology companies in North America solely by herself. She found the strength to ask for help, and this often comes at a time where asking for help is the thing we want least but need most. It takes humility, and especially as a female entrepreneur, being able to ask for help is the key to achieving sustainable growth and scale. Asking for help is one of the most critical decisions you can make because it will only accelerate your path. There is nothing shameful about that.

How do you gain clarity? In this episode, Nikki Barua and Monica Marquez explain how they found their passions and identified their unique skills. Change is constant; the only species that survive are the ones that adapt to the change. The challenge in innovation is about anticipating change and adapting quickly. Nikki built her reputation as an innovation expert and has guided people and organizations in adapting to change quickly. That’s why she is known as the Darwin of the Digital Age. Early in her career, Nikki would attempt to fit into a box and define herself narrowly. However, she learned that your unique skill is something that comes effortlessly. Nikki discovered that her unique skill is her ability to see the big picture, connect-the-dots, and recognize patterns. Nikki says that to grow your impact, you must find the most significant platform where you can reach the most people, solve their problems and deliver massive value. Monica always had a knack for finding creative solutions to problems. She didn’t see the lack of resources or tools as a limitation. Instead she had a gift in being resourceful and creative to solve the most challenging problems. She discovered that her unique skill was creativity and resourcefulness and it was something people valued greatly. Monica wants to help other underdogs figure out the way and find opportunities. She takes her creativity and resourcefulness to pave the way for other underdogs. That’s why she is known as the McGyver of the Marginalized. In this episode, we dive deep into the big, scary existential questions: What is the meaning of life? Why do bad things happen to good people? Where do we go when we die? And most of all, why are we humans so full of fear so much of the time, and how can we finally free ourselves from it? Join us as we approach the human condition of fear-based living from the perspective of the ancient teachings of Kabbalah with Monica Berg, bestselling author and CCO of The Kabbalah Centre. When her second child was diagnosed with Down Syndrome shortly after his birth, Monica was forced to reevaluate her belief systems. The diagnosis led to Monica’s credo, “In change, there is great power,” and the choice to believe in the beauty and potential of who her son could become and subsequently who she could become, in the absence of fear. In this courageous and inspiring conversation, we cover some hard-to-tackle subjects like religious hypocrisy, shame, sin, parenthood, partnership, and the three types of fear (healthy, real, and illogical). We’ll even talk about the time Luke laid down in a freshly-dug grave to contemplate the temporal nature of his current bodily incarnation. Let’s do this. Topics Discussed In This Episode: Why bad things happen to good people How Monica’s son Joshua’s Down Syndrome diagnosis made Monica a better, more empathetic person How you can release unnecessary shame tied to the idea of “sin” How to joyfully connect with loved ones experiencing Alzheimer's The goal of life: to leave the world completely different than how you arrived What you have to gain – or lose – from the three types of fear The benefits of contemplating the temporary nature of your current human incarnation How to mute your fear of death by focusing on living your best, most compassionate life The big choice: either letting your ego lead or letting your soul lead How to shift your perspective and look for the gift in everything The relationship between the material world (the 1% reality) vs. the nonmaterial world (the 99% reality) The ultimate currency: the desire to receive for the sake of sharing How to claim your power to earn all of the joy and fulfillment you are seeking We are all either growing forward or growing backwards; it’s up to us The five Kabbalistic levels of the soul Our responsibility to reveal our best selves It’s not about what happens; it’s about what you do with what happens Religious hypocrisy The Zohar: a key to decode ancient Jewish and Christian texts How to utilize Kabbalistic astrology to become a better parent and partner What’s at the core of every fear Living on purpose The difference between fear and anxiety Monica’s seven steps to completely and utterly conquering your fear More about this episode. What does it take to truly chase your dreams? For many people, living up to everyone else’s expectations squelches the fearlessness that it takes to go after dreams. Today’s show is all about not losing the youthful exuberance and drive that sets us on the path to our dreams. Monica Rivera is a NYC-based podcast producer, consultant, and speaker who is living a life full of experience by shaking up routines and challenging conventional thinking. She’s the host of YOU WANNA DO WHAT?!--a weekly podcast heard in over 70 countries. YOU WANNA DO WHAT?! Is a podcast about exploring interests, allowing ourselves to change, choose, and try, whether it’s a lifestyle, hobby, fitness transformation, career change, or a bucket list item. Young dreams Does Mom really know best? Monica’s mom didn’t think she could earn a good living or have a stable career doing something creative, so she pushed her into economics. Monica quickly realized it wasn’t her “thing,” but it put her on the corporate ladder. The younger Monica originally wanted to be a singer, and then the first Latina Supreme Court justice, and then a writer. Even though Monica won contests in school with her writing, her mom stepped in to turn her dreams into a different direction. TWEET: If you want to do something, take the first action step and the rest will follow. @youwannadowhat #chasingdreams Spotlighting diversity Are there more dream chasers than you would expect? Monica says that everyone has a dream, but we don’t always have the freedom to chase it. She was in a corporate job and felt all her lights dimming. She was unhappy and felt that she wasn’t getting the opportunities she wanted. She knew she had to dig herself out of the hole she was in, and she asked herself, “What happened to the person I used to be?” TWEET: I love connecting the stories of human experience with an audience. @youwannadowhat #chasingdreams It’s NEVER too late! Are you waiting to chase your dream? Even though it’s never too late, Monica hears many people say they are waiting for retirement or some other life event. We are conditioned to think we have all the time in the world---and this is the biggest problem in chasing dreams. Don’t wait for retirement! Monica’s advice is to start small by thinking about the things you really loved as a kid, and see if you can connect to those things now. Don’t think you have to give up all fun just because you’re an adult. Most people are way too tied to a timeline. TWEET: Ultimately, I want to tell stories and amplify voices. @youwannadowhat #chasingdreams Guest Recommendation: ONE action for a dream chaser to take--”What’s the one thing you would wish you had done more of if next Friday were your last day? That’s your dream, so go chase it.” OUTLINE OF THE EPISODE: [:13] How Monica was introduced to me [1:01]Young Monica’s dreams [4:05] Why Monica wants to tell stories and learn people’s “why’s” [4:44] Enhancing the creative side with photography [7:02] Sharing stories through the podcast [8:10] The determination of Cyrus Harper [10:07] Spotlighting diversity [13:15] Holding to our fearlessness [14:30] How Monica has grown [14:55] Monica’s dream podcast guest---Oprah [19:22] How millennials and Gen Z’ers are chasing dreams [21:40] It’s never too late [26:27] Being comfortable can become uncomfortable [28:36] The difficulty in embracing “different” [32:27] A picture in a ball pit [34:00] ONE action for a dream chaser Resources: Monica on Facebook Monica on Twitter Monica on Instagram Monica’s Website Gregg Clunis episode Cyrus Harper episode TWEETS YOU CAN USE: TWEET: At the end of the day, you have to be happy with the life you live. @youwannadowhat #chasingdreams TWEET: Most people think confrontation is a bad word---but I don’t. @youwannadowhat #chasingdreams

Episode 070. "But everyone keeps saying just find your passion -- find that one thing and follow your bliss and I thought well... I have a bunch of passions, so which passion are we talking about? And that's why I kept feeling really stuck in that decision of needing to pick one thing." ~Monica Rivera I'm obsessed with podcasts and I always want MORE so there's this thing I do once a week in the She Podcasts Facebook Group on Wednesdays. I scroll through a VERY long thread of new podcast episodes by other women podcasters and pick a few I've never heard of to check out. Most of the time, I decide they're not for me but every once in a while, a show really stands out and I fall in love. That's what happened with Monica's podcast: You Wanna Do What?! When I first heard it, I thought, "I want to to be friends with this woman." Her show feels so motivating without feeling coachy or preachy or overwhelming. And I'm so happy to be getting to know her and introduce her to you! 2 stories that stand out in this interview: 1) How Monica got into podcasting 2) How she was inspired by her grandmother not to wait to try new things Listen to Monica's podcast You Wanna Do What?! In part two of Monica’s birth story, she talks about the birth of her son, Murphy. The pregnancy, birth, and postpartum experiences were completely different with Murphy than they were with Betsy and she explains why. Here are a few high points from this episode: The breastfeeding challenges and postpartum anxiety she dealt with after her first birth and how those experiences informed her postpartum expectations for baby #2 What bonding with her new babies looked like and how “baby bliss” was NOT a thing she experienced in the early days with either of her babies. In this episode, Karly and Ali sit down with Monica, Ali’s best friend/N.O.K. (Number One Kween), to hear about the birth of her first child, Betsy. This birth did not go as planned and involved a lot of surrender, acceptance, and flexbility. Monica reflects beautifully on the steps she and her husband took to prepare for Betsy’s birth and what it was like to walk through labor, delivery, and the early postpartum period. Here are some of the specific points that Monica includes in Betsy’s birth story: Planning on and preparing for a natural birth, including seeking out midwifery care, hiring a doula, and taking Hypnobirthing classes The impact that being raised in culture of body shame had on Monica’s pregnancy, birth, and postpartum experiences How it was empowering to take an interest in her birth experience and plan for a low-intervention birth What it was like to go 2 weeks over due (aka – EMOTIONAL WARFARE) and all the natural induction tools that Monica tried Dealing with cervical scar tissue, back labor, and thick meconium throughout labor The use of an epidural and Pitocin despite the original plan to have an unmedicated, low-intervention birth Processing her birth experience in the months following Betsy’s birth How Monica and Ali fell in love and became best kween friends because of Betsy’s birth Enjoy, Kweens!! --- Did you like this episode? 'Advance Yourself' month continues where we’re diving into the weeds talking about taking practical, boots-on-the-ground action steps to move your career forwards, or more specifically in this episode how to transition from climbing one ladder to climbing a different one, even if that means taking one step back to take several forwards in the future. My guest today is Monica Daniel who has become somewhat of a legend on my former show. This interview was recorded a couple years ago and is the #1 most downloaded episode of my previous podcast ‘Fitness In Post’ because it answered the most common question asked out of complete and utter desperation in all of Hollywood: “How do I get out of reality television so I can work in scripted television instead?” Monica and I walk through the practical steps she took to decide if the transition was right for her, and then more importantly what steps she took to meet the right people and make sure she was in the right place at the right time. While the transition isn’t terribly easy, the steps are pretty simple. (Just to give you a quick head’s up, at the end of the episode we talk briefly about a bonus document summarizing her journey and that document is no longer available. But the good news is, it inspired me to create an Ultimate Guide that’s 10 times better, my brand new ‘Ultimate Guide to Making It In Hollywood as a Creative’) Want to Hear More Episodes Like This One? » Click here to subscribe and never miss another episode Here's What You'll Learn: Monica’s background editing reality television How Monica first approached me at a networking event and why this was the RIGHT way to cold approach someone Some of the WRONG ways to cold approach someone How Monica was ashamed to share the type of reality work she did with those who work in scripted How focusing on her health was one of the key factors to making the transition The different “phases” of her career and how each one was important to leading Monica towards working in scripted The conversation that Monica struck up with an editor that built the relationship that got her the job interview How taking a free gig helped lead Monica to getting a fantastic recommendation for her scripted job How Monica’s various skills in reality helped her transition to scripted and helped sell her as a unique talent We break down the actionable steps anyone can take to make the transition to scripted (or any field for that matter) Useful Resources Mentioned: Going Postal Show Our Generous Sponsors: This episode is made possible by Ergodriven, the makers of the Topo Mat, my #1 recommendation for anyone interested in moving more at their height-adjustable workstation. This week, we have an interview with Monica Cassani. Monica has seen the mental health system from both sides – as a social worker and as a person whose life was severely ruptured by psychiatric drugs. She writes critically about the system, as well as holistic pathways of healing without medication. Monica’s website, Everything Matters Beyond Meds, is comprehensive library of information containing more than 5,000 blog posts, information articles, videos, personal experiences and shares many natural methods of self-care for finding and sustaining health in body, mind and spirit. Her blog also deals with wider issues in the socio/political and spiritual realms as they pertain to mental health and human rights issues surrounding psychiatry. I was keen to ask Monica about her own experiences of the psychiatric system, how a persons sensitivity can be affected by psychiatric treatment and how she helps and supports others to achieve health in body, mind and spirit. In this episode, we discuss: ▪How Monica came to be involved with the psychiatric system ▪How treatment was repeatedly forced on Monica ▪That the lack of information available meant that Monica felt she had no alternatives to the standard model of treatment ▪That she was threatened with committal to a State Asylum ▪How, because of the medications, Monica became non verbal and had difficulty walking ▪The betrayal that Monica felt after trusting and being failed by the medical system ▪How she has been drug free for more than 8 years after being on a substantial cocktail of five different medications for over 25 years ▪That Monica became focussed on getting past the drugs and on her work and took a harm reduction approach to getting off her medications ▪How Monica saw her withdrawal from the drugs as a rebellion and felt emancipated once she was medication free ▪That Monica witnessed clients struggling with the drugs and even, tragically, dying from their effects ▪How Monica views hypersensitivity and its relation to her healing ▪That Monica feels, in some ways, far healthier now than before the drugs but in other respects she feels that she struggles with things that others may find easy ▪That hypersensitivity seems to be common in those who have taken or withdrawn from psychiatric drugs ▪That most in the mental health system do not have the necessary experience to help those who have struggled with their medications ▪How Monica came to set up and invest time in her blog: Everything Matters Beyond Meds ▪How Monica was inspired by the work of the journalist Philip Dawdy and motivated by her family ▪How Everything Matters Beyond Meds combines science and holistic approaches in presenting options for people to support their health and wellbeing ▪That Monica takes a hands off approach to helping and supporting others because she recognises the coercive nature of medical approaches and respects the right of the individual to choose for themselves ▪How people taking or withdrawing from psychiatric drugs tend to neglect their bodies and that preparation is important before tapering off medications ▪That diet is particularly important when considering withdrawing from psychiatric drugs To listen on Mad in America: https://goo.gl/tyyLmt Podcast show notes: https://goo.gl/oTo3g1 To get in touch with us email: podcasts@madinamerica.com © Mad in America 2017
