In this episode, my guest is Dr. Terry Sejnowski, Ph.D., professor of computational neurobiology at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies. He is world-renowned for exploring how our brain processes and stores information and, with that understanding, for developing tools that enable us to markedly improve our ability to learn all types of information and skills. We discuss how to learn most effectively in order to truly master a subject or skill. Dr. Sejnowski explains how to use AI tools to forage for new information, generate ideas, predict the future, and assist in analyzing health data and making health-related decisions. We also explore non-AI strategies to enhance learning and creativity, including how specific types of exercise can improve mitochondrial function and cognitive performance. Listeners will gain insights into how computational methods and AI are transforming our understanding of brain function, learning, and memory, as well as the emerging roles of these tools in addressing personal health and treating brain diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. In this episode, my guest is Dr. Jamil Zaki, Ph.D., professor of psychology at Stanford University, director of the Stanford Social Neuroscience Laboratory, and the author of the new book Hope for Cynics. We discuss cynicism and its healthier, more adaptive alternative, healthy skepticism, and how embracing healthy skepticism can enhance both our emotional and physical health. We discuss the data on how cynicism affects us as individuals and in relationships, causing lower levels of happiness, poorer physical health, and reduced creativity, trust, and collaboration. He also explains novel data-supported tools that we can use to shift ourselves towards a more informed yet more positive worldview and how to adopt a mindset of “hopeful skepticism” — the ideal stance to navigate life. Dr. Zaki offers listeners a positive, hopeful view of humanity grounded in cutting-edge research from his laboratory and other top laboratories. Then, I describe protocols: “McGill's Big 3” exercises, a highly effective psoas stretch, abdominal stabilization, breathing techniques, and protocols to reinforce essential supports for the back, including the neck, pelvis, feet, and toes. I also explain how you can reduce and potentially eliminate back pain and sciatica using a specific type of bar hang, “cobra push-ups,” medial-glute strengthening exercises, and more. Imagine the lush landscape of Hawaii — the brilliant green foliage, the vibrant flowers, the fragrant herbs and plants — being transferred into your backyard or the parcel of land you've purchased. In today's episode, I welcome Brad Krass and Doug Wolkon (a repeat guest on the show) who are experts in creating thriving, bountiful farms using only two or three acres of land. If you aren't familiar with my previous podcasts featuring Doug Wolkon of Kauai Farmacy (use code GREENFIELD15 to save 15%), I first discovered him through my friend Laird Hamilton when he brought me to Doug's fabulous farm in Kauai. He was growing a vast array of superfoods and extracting and making tinctures, oils, powders, and all sorts of different compounds from his small farm, using fascinating tactics. Since then, I've been a huge fan of Kauai Farmacy. I use their teas, salves, lotions, dried cacao beans, and all sorts of crazy superfoods that show up at my house from the islands every few months or so from Doug. Doug ended up training Brad (also featured in today's show) who lives very close to me. Brad took all of Doug's concepts and did the same thing in Sandpoint, Idaho, about an hour from my house. Brad's farm, New Flower (use code BEN to save 10%), is a permaculture-based herb farm that promotes a wellness lifestyle culture through natural farming practices and a nourishing herbal apothecary with high-quality herbal products. Learning how to farm in Hawaii and then reapplying it to a different area of the world is such an interesting concept that I knew I had to get this duo on the show together. By the end of today's episode, you'll walk away knowing more about all things farming, gardening, permaculture, and how to grow food anywhere using the cool concepts that Doug and Brad have implemented. For more information on plant medicine and farming, check out my other two interviews with Doug: Crazy Superfoods You've Never Heard Of, The Little-Known Libido-Enhancing Berry, Remineralizing Your Body With Lubricating Plant Oils & More With Kuaui Farmacy's Doug Wolkon. In this episode, my guest is Dr. Becky Kennedy, Ph.D., a clinical psychologist, bestselling author, and founder of Good Inside, an education platform for parents and parents-to-be. We discuss actionable protocols for raising resilient, emotionally healthy kids and effective alternatives to typical forms of reward and punishment that instead teach children valuable skills and strengthen the parent-child bond. These protocols also apply to other types of relationships: professional, romantic, friendships, siblings, etc. We explain how to respond to emotional outbursts, rudeness, and entitlement, repair fractured relationships, build self-confidence, and improve interpersonal connections with empathy while maintaining healthy boundaries. We also discuss how to effectively communicate with children and adults with ADHD, anxiety, learning challenges, or with “deeply feeling” individuals. The conversation is broadly applicable to all types of social interactions and bonds. By the end of the episode, you will have learned simple yet powerful tools to build healthy relationships with kids, teens, adults, and oneself. In this journal club episode, my guest is Dr. Peter Attia, M.D., a Stanford and Johns Hopkins-trained physician focusing on healthspan and lifespan and the host of The Drive podcast. We each present a peer-reviewed scientific paper chosen because it contains novel, interesting, and actionable data. First, we discuss a paper on how bright light exposure at sunrise and throughout the day and dark exposure at night independently improve mental health and can offset some of the major symptoms of mental health disorders such as depression and anxiety. Then, we discuss an article that explores a novel class of immunotherapy treatments to combat cancer. We also discuss some of the new data on low-calorie sweeteners and if they are safe. This episode should be of interest to listeners curious about maximizing their vitality and longevity and to anyone seeking science-supported ways to improve mental health and lifespan. This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health, Whoop, and JOOV. Anxiety diagnoses have been on the rise, especially in a post-pandemic world. With more and more people suffering from anxiety in our stressful lifestyles, it can be challenging to find a path forward and calm our minds. But we know that anxiety can be a powerful signal from our body that change needs to occur. One change we can implement immediately is changing what we eat daily. Our food has the power to lower inflammation in our body, enhance gut bacteria, and ultimately change how we feel. Today on The Dhru Purohit Podcast, Dhru sits down with Dr. Uma Naidoo, a Harvard trained psychiatrist, Professional Chef, and Nutrition Specialist. Dr. Naidoo shares the research that shows the connection between the foods we eat and how we feel. She also shares the common myths about anxiety and lifestyle factors that can increase our anxiety, including ultra-processed foods, lack of fiber, and a sedentary lifestyle. Dr. Naidoo shows us how to fill our plates with foods and incorporate anxiety-busting foods into our diet. Dr. Naidoo founded and directs the first hospital-based clinical service in Nutritional Psychiatry in the US. She is the Director of Nutritional and Lifestyle Psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital and Director of Nutritional Psychiatry at the Massachusetts General Hospital Academy while serving on the faculty at Harvard Medical School. She is the author of This is Your Brain on Food, and her new book, Calm Your Mind with Food, focuses on anxiety, the gut brain connection, and practical tools to calm our minds. In this episode, Dhru and Dr. Naidoo dive into (audio version / Apple Subscriber version):The common misconceptions about anxiety (1:44 / 1:44)The foods in our diet and lifestyle factors that have increased anxiety (5:53 / 5:53)The interlink between the brain and the body in relationship to anxiety (10:12 / 7:48)Fried foods and what they cause in your body (12:00 / 9:30) How to know if you have a healthy metabolism (17:09 / 14:46)Dr. Naidoo's journey with anxiety (23:32 / 21:10)The truth about foods that are marketed as “healthy” (33:14 / 29:04)The importance of dietary fiber in our diets (38:12 / 34:00)Leptin resistance (40:37 / 36:16) The impact of a sedentary lifestyle on anxiety (42:50 / 38:38)Dr. Naidoo's patient testimonials (48:41 / 44:30)Protein for satiety (51:40 / 47:17)Foods and recipes Dr. Naidoo loves (58:00 / 53:50)Dr. Naidoo's cancer diagnosis journey (1:01:44 / 57:25) Also mentioned in this episodePreorder Book Bonuses from Dr. NaidooAccess more than 3,000 specialty lab tests with Rupa Health. Increased human life expectancy is one of the greatest breakthroughs in modern history. We have more than doubled the global average in the last 100 years, but the length of our healthspan, the time we spend in good health, has not increased at the same rate. With the population of people over 60 expected to almost double from 12% to 22% between 2015 and 2050, we have an urgent need to find novel solutions for healthy aging. On today's episode of The Doctor's Farmacy, I'm excited to talk to my good friend Dr. Peter Diamandis about how we can apply the latest science and technology in the field of longevity to optimize not only how long we live but how vibrant and healthy we remain as we age. Peter is a serial entrepreneur, futurist, technologist, New York Times bestselling author, and the founder of more than 25 companies. Fortune magazine has named Peter “one of the World's 50 Greatest Leaders,” and he is the Founder and executive chairman of the XPRIZE Foundation, which has launched more than $300 million in incentive competitions, driving more than $3.5 billion in R&D (most recently launching the $100 million Gigaton Carbon XPRIZE funded by Elon Musk to combat climate change). Peter's venture fund, BOLD Capital Partners, is deploying $600M+ into exponential technologies and health-biotech. Peter has written four New York Times bestsellers, and his life's mission is to empower entrepreneurs to create a hopeful, compelling, and abundant future for humanity. This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health, Joovv, Sunlighten, and Cozy Earth.Streamline your lab orders with Rupa Health. Today on the Dhru Purohit Podcast, I share a simple gratitude practice to help supercharge and accelerate your goals and dreams. At the end of the year, many of us set New Year's resolutions or intentions for how we want the next year to go. I see an interesting pattern as people start to list their goals, dreams, habits, and the things they want to give attention and energy to. But this process often involves focusing on what is lacking and the areas where they feel they are not enough. Today, I share three questions to ask ourselves before we set our goals, which I call a palette cleanse, that will help us remember that no matter how we feel we did at the end of the month or year, we did the best we could. It also allows us to remember how supported we were and what we did to help other people. Here is the practice No matter how big or small…1) What's something tough or challenging that I did this month?2) Who's someone who did something for me?3) What's something nice I did for someone else?Remembering these three things changes your vibration for what you think is possible and takes you out of negativity bias into positivity bias. In this episode, Dhru dives into (audio version / Apple Subscriber version):Why this gratitude practice is key (1:09 / 1:09)Negativity bias (10:45 / 8:10)Threats to our mental health (12:25 / 9:55)Deprogram negativity (13:10 / 11:30)Our brains as detectives (16:27 / 13:55)Gratitude as mediation on the goodness in our lives (17:51 /15:00)The Science of Gratitude (22:22 / 17:45)Deep diving into the Gratitude Protocol (27:15 / 22:57)How to implement the Gratitude Protocol (40:20 / 35:58)Also mentioned in today's episode:Episode with Dr. Tara SwartEpisode with Bruce LiptonEpisode with GottmansNewsletter on Gratitude and ResearchFor more on Dhru Purohit, be sure to follow him on Instagram @dhrupurohit, on Facebook @dhruxpurohit, on Twitter @dhrupurohit, and YouTube @dhrupurohit.This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health, Birch Living, and JOOV. This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health, BiOptimizers, Levels, and Joovv.I'm willing to bet oxygen isn't front-of-mind for most of us each day. We can get what we need at any given moment: enough to conveniently power our lungs and bodies without any conscious work on our part. So you might be surprised to learn that oxygen is somewhat of an undercover superhero, and Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) unleashes its powers for dramatic healing. HBOT uses air pressure 2 to 3 times higher than the atmospheric pressure around us, helping our lungs gather much more oxygen than would be possible by breathing pure oxygen at standard air pressure. Amplifying oxygen in this way creates an environment that helps fight bacteria and triggers growth factors and stem cells for deep healing. On today's episode of The Doctor's Farmacy, I'm excited to talk to Dr. Scott Sherr all about Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy and how we can use it to maximize healing and reverse aging.Dr. Scott Sherr is a Board Certified Internal Medicine Physician Certified in Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy and Health Optimization Medicine (HOMe). He is the founder of Integrative HBOT, a worldwide telemedicine practice where he consults and educates patients and clinics using his novel approach to hyperbaric therapy that includes cutting-edge and dynamic HBOT protocols, comprehensive laboratory testing (using the HOMe framework), targeted supplementation, personal practices, synergistic technologies (new and ancient), and more. Health and wellness are vast arenas, but a few figures cut through the noise with their pioneering insights and transformative impacts. Dr. Joseph Mercola is undeniably one of them. Hailing from Chicago, Dr. Mercola's multifaceted journey encompasses marathon feats and leadership roles at prestigious institutions like St. Alexius Medical Center. Dr. Mercola is the author of 15 books, with his most recent book, “The Truth About COVID-19”, being a national bestseller on Amazon, Wall Street Journal, USA Today, and Publishers Weekly. Three of his books have also been included in The New York Times Best Sellers list, namely Effortless Healing, The No-Grain Diet, and The Great Bird Flu Hoax. In the 1990s, Dr. Mercola recognized the monumental potential of holistic, preventative health measures. This revelation gave birth to Mercola.com in 1997, a sanctuary for those drawn to a natural approach to wellness. Beyond being a top-ranking health website, it stands as a bastion against misinformation, challenging narratives propagated by corporate and governmental behemoths. In today's conversation, Dr. Mercola and I get into the nexus between vitamin D and COVID-19, uncover the links between the modern American diet and mitochondrial damage, and traverse the intriguing landscape of Intermittent Hypoxia Training (IHT). As we delve into the historical trajectory of obesity and diabetes and explore the mechanisms of methylene blue and ozone, prepare for another discussion that is always fascinating and enlightening.
