Born in Zolani, South Africa, brothers Mthuthuzeli & Siphe November have danced together since before either of them can remember, until their passion for dance grew into two accomplished careers and sent them to two different continents. Siphe has been an undeniable force and integral part of the National Ballet of Canada; and Mthuthuzeli's work as a dancer and choreographer in London, England with Ballet Black continues to dazzle and win prestigious awards. We caught up with both brothers in the midst of their creation process in London to chat about how they were getting along. Their highly-anticipated work, titled My Mother's Son, was filmed by Canadian director Vikram Dasgupta at the palatial Battersea Arts Centre in London, and premieres on Oct. 13 as part of Fall for Dance North's digital event 2021 Signature Program, co-presented by TO Live.

In this episode of "The Things I Think About Podcast," I have a very interesting conversation with Gary Revel. Who is that? Read on. The deaths of JFK, his brother Bobby and the formidable, iconic, Martin Luther King Jr. are open-and-shut cases, right? Lee Harvey Oswald, Sirhan Sirhan and James Earl Ray did it … right? "Not so!" writes acclaimed author Gary Revel in his new book, To Live or Maybe Not, and theme song, “They Slew the Dreamer,” adding that his work is “historically accurate, and an often edge of your seat, first-person, up-close account that sets the record straight.” Revel offers a behind the scenes look at the dramatic yet terrifying walls of the infamous Brushy Mountain Prison of East Tennessee, where he walked and talked with the much written about (“alleged”) assassin of Martin Luther King Jr., James Earl Ray. ... MORE ABOUT MY GUEST The humble beginnings of Gary Revel doesn't prepare one for the fascinating, and for most, unbelievable adventures his life has endured. From Florala, Alabama, a small town, on the Florida-Alabama line, to Hollywood, New York City, Memphis, Nashville and more, the excitement, danger and intrigue of his life spills forth. His new memoir, To Live or Maybe Not, gives the reader an insider's introduction, to the legendary details, related to his song, "They Slew the Dreamer", his movie in development, THEY SLEW THE DREAMER: MLK: The Gary Revel Story, and the many other true stories of investigations, books, music and filmmaking he speaks of. To Live and Die in L.A. Review We continue our informal, intermittent series on grimy cops vs crooks genre movies (see also: Drug War, King of New York, Hard Boiled) with William Friedkin's slick-but-gritty 1985 thriller To Live and Die in L.A. With its amoral characters, full-frontal nudity, and wildly epic car chase, this is one we (mostly) find lots to rave about. When he's not tearing faces off in various musical projects - 'To Live and Shave in LA' & 'NH Meth' to name two - Tom Smith leads a genteel life in Hanover, Germany, so it's only fitting that he brought Hanover's own 39 Clocks and their sophomore classic "Subnarcotic" to the table for perusal. Their songs of urban decay and rainy night insanities sung - subversively for 1982 - in English set them apart from the German New Wave of the time, and they managed to turn their love of the Velvets, Suicide and 60's garage-rock into their own "psycho-beat" sound that STILL sounds weirdly ahead of its time! Special investigator Gary Revel discusses his inquiry into the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. The fascinating story of his investigation and what he unearthed became the inspiration for the original song, They Slew the Dreamer was briefly included in his recent book, To Live or Maybe Not. Now, his remarkable journey is being developed into a motion picture, They Slew the Dreamer: MLK-The Gary Revel Story. Gary Revel, whose extraordinary history of investigations into the killings of MLK, JFK and RFK make him a compelling guest. Revel is also a songwriter, musician and author. “The worst times in our lives are often roads to the best times, waiting ahead. Stay safe and prayerful, as you find your way into tomorrow.” – Gary Revel A single bullet silenced the voice, but not the dream, of Martin Luther King Jr. on April 4, 1968. Whether or not James Earl Ray pulled the trigger and why has been the subject of speculation for more than five decades. In 1977, 27-year-old special investigator Gary Revel, in association with the House Select Committee on Assassinations, launched his own search for the unvarnished truth about King's assassination. Danger, intrigue and murder followed. Revel's journey took him into Brushy Mountain Prison, where he met and became a personal confidant to the accused assassin, James Earl Ray. From there, Revel followed the clues wherever they led, including Memphis, Tennessee; New Orleans, Louisiana; Miami, Florida; and other undisclosed locations. Along the way, Revel had to navigate chaotic twists and turns as he uncovered information pointing to what he refers to as the involvement of organized crime and the highly placed people in the U.S. government. Revel also lost his younger brother and an associate to murder during his investigation. The captivating story of his investigation and what he unearthed is now being developed into a feature motion picture, They Slew the Dreamer: MLK-The Gary Revel Story. Revel's quest for the truth also became the inspiration for the song, “They Slew the Dreamer,” and is introduced in his book, To Live or Maybe Not. More than 30 years after his investigation into Martin Luther King Jr.'s death, Revel continues to “shine the light of truth into the darkest halls of injustice”; and finds he can't quit until the world knows what he found. Songwriter, musician, author and special investigator Gary Revel was born in Florala, Alabama, and he formed his first band when he was 15. In the midst of a promising career in music, Revel found himself investigating the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. in association with the U.S. government's House Select Committee on Assassinations. Revel continues to release and distribute music via his Jongleur Music company as well as developing motion pictures via his Jongleur Pictures company. He is also the author of My Angel from Heaven, Milestones, Grempk and Don't Stop Dancing: Stranger Than Fiction, his investigation into the life of Michael Jackson. Gary is also founder of Mother Nature Festival Live Inc., a 501(c)3 nonprofit corporation. For more information, please visit http://garyrevel.com/. "As the Father raises up the dead and quickenth, even so the Son quickeneth whom He will." The Father raised Christ from the dead. Even so we are raised from the dead. As Christ was raised from the dead, Paul writes in Romans 6, we walk in newness of life. Our quickening, our raising is as Christ. We are in union with Him. We have no quickening outside of HIm. "As the Father quickentheth, the Son quickeneth also." Let us hear this. As the Father quickeneth. How does the Father quicken? Or better who does the Father quicken? He quickened or made alive Christ from the dead. As He made Christ alive, Christ makes alive those he will. We are made alive in this order, as Christ was quickened from the dead. Our quickening is in Him. We have no quickening outside of Him. Paul goes unto to write that He is our Life. I am concerned very few believers HEAR This. CHRIST IS OUR LIFE. To Live is Christ. Life and living is that of Christ that is made alive or real within us. Glory to God!
When talking about West Coast gangster rap, the focus is usually on the era-defining stars who reigned during 1990s—Dr. Dre, Tupac, and Snoop Dog foremost among them. In her new book, “To Live and Defy in LA: How Gangster Rap Changed America,” Professor Felicia Angeja Viator argues that starting with the success of Dr. Dre's The Chronic or even N.W.A's Straight Outta Compton leaves out half the story. The aesthetic and cultural innovations of gangster rap were deeply rooted in the political economy of Black L.A., a space defined by entrepreneurial DJs, omnipresent police brutality, deindustrialization, a thriving gang culture, and the tantalizing access to the power and prestige of Hollywood. This history is essential for understanding how West Coast rappers were able to snatch New York's spotlight, transforming Hip Hop into a national musical form, and laying the groundwork for...pretty much all of the pop culture produced since. Come for a revaluation of Eazy-E. Stay to find out which Parliament track is best suited for stopping a teenage brawl.

As Amanda battles back to consciousness, Michael's got his own fights: Kimberly reveals that she's returned early from Minnesota, she doesn't buy his stories about why Amanda's lingerie is all over the beach house, and he is officially on notice. This just convinces him to accelerate his exit plans, but then Kimberly runs into the city's insurance guy at the hospital before Michael does and takes possession of that big settlement check, forcing Michael to make nice. Meanwhile, Alison continues being a bitch to everyone at D&D except Brooke. And why not -- Brooke is actually useful, offering her dad's palatial estate as a photo shoot location when another one falls through. Having Billy on her literal home turf causes Brooke to escalate her mind games with him, flirting super-hard just before her fiancé shows up. Surprise! Brooke later ends up at the hospital when Billy goes to visit Amanda, and Amanda makes a note. After making peace with Jake, Jess decides to test it by showing up in L.A. unannounced and manipulating Jake into giving him a job and letting Jess crash at his place. Sydney threatens Jess with exposure when she catches him rifling through the files in Jake's office, but it seems as though the Hanson brothers' family ties are going to be too strong for her to break...at least for now. Nick Timmons brought life into the lives of others. His father, Kevin Timmons stated that, “Nick was Peter Pan.”Friends, this is a longer episode than normal, running closer to 50 minutes than 30 minutes. In the event suicide is a trigger for you, please have someone with you during this episode. We discuss the trauma of suicide, mental illness, depression, and anxiety. The grief journey is ongoing and does not take a straight path. In fact, if you don’t know where you are on your own path, listen to Anne Timmons explain to you that “there is no getting around grief - if you don't walk through it, you are stuck."Many people in the Kansas City region know of the restaurants, “Nick and Jake’s”. They serve a great beverage and meal, providing fun for families, singles and those who need many televisions on at one time for that special sporting event. My guests on Episode 30, “Saving our Children from Suicide” are Kevin and Anne Timmons. Kevin co-founded Nick and Jake’s with Doug Watkins and they named it after their boys…Nick and Jake. A self-proclaimed “class clown”, Kevin finds a few opportunities to draw a smile and laugh from both me an Anne even as we are discussing the sorrow of his son’s suicide. While Kevin wanted to “bury himself in his closet and only think about Nick”, Pastor Karen Lampe asked him to open his home to friends grieving their loss of Nick, “a friend who brought light into the lives of others”. Kevin listened and thus began his healing journey.Humor, paying it forward, sharing in a grieving parents’ group, raising funds for mental health awareness, and implementing specialized counselors for their family’s school district are each healing modalities for Kevin and Anne Timmons. Opening Fore the Kids in 2005 and then pivoting significantly in 2017, after Nick took his life, Kevin shares past and present information highlighting the importance of giving back to your community. They are honest and raw about seeing signs of Nick’s depression and not taking steps that might have helped. Anne is clear with us, even her psychology and teaching degrees do not provide her all the knowledge needed to walk her path alone. Using many tools, seeking assistance from professionals, and holding tightly to her faith, Anne tells us her faith has helped her through several significant life disruptions as she has watched “God weave good into a tragedy”.On several occasions, I have stated that there are many ways to find healing…some good and some not. Kevin explains his desire to make changes in his own healing rather than self-medicating with alcohol. He also encourages and supports friendships, stating that we should all “check in with our friends”, if we are the one hurting and when we are part of a supportive team.Listening to this podcast will not be easy. It should not be. Suicide is horrific. For those left behind questioning themselves, a path to self-forgiveness seems necessary. Seek professional assistance if you are working to heal from a similar, tragic situation. Seek professional assistance from resources listed below if you are considering taking your own life or know someone who is.You are valuable. You are wanted on this planet. Stay alive because, “To Live would be an awfully big adventure!” - Robin Williams from the movie “Hook”, when he played Peter Pan - and Kevin Timmons, a grieving and healing father.Friends, together we are better.Seek help. In this Easter sermon, Pastor Paul continued in the To Live is Christ series and shared what the gospel is, how Jesus is our example and substitution and what that means for us today.
Dave and Paul are back! This week they go back in time to talk about some of their favorite 80'S CRIME films! "Thief," "To Live and Die in LA," "Manhunter," "A Fish Called Wanda," "Nighthawks," "Dead Bang," and more!
