Brian Brushwood knows how to gain and hold attention in social media.Reaching for that brass ring causes most people to lean too far off their plastic horse on the social media merry-go-round.SPLAT! They land flat on their faces with only a few hundred views.Brian has built a YouTube channel to 1.7 million subscribers, an entirely different channel to more than 2 million subscribers, and 12 days ago he produced a 1-minute “short” that had 3.6 million views on the first day, and at the time of this writing – on Day 12 – it has climbed to 17.1 million views. And you – yes, you – could have shot that exact same video with nothing more than a cell phone.I asked Brian if I could ask him a few questions on ZOOM for the Monday Morning Memo. Here are a some of the things he shared with me:“There's a temptation, especially with YouTube, to perpetually feel like you're too late. You're never too late. I thought I was too late to start YouTube in 2006 because it had been around since 2005. It was already seeing its early superstars. And I started in 2006. And then I thought by the time Scam School came to YouTube in 2009, I thought it was too late. It wasn't too late. I thought it was too late in 2016 when we launched the Modern Rogue. It wasn't too late.”“YouTube is the dominant market now.”“Facebook is now pay-to-play. And for some messaging, that works. It's worth paying the money to get the message out there. But if you're trying to build organic fans like I am, it's not a fit.”“TikTok: there's only one star of TikTok, and that's TikTok. You can get a million views one day and the next day you'll get 800. And it's agonizing because they literally just want to lure you into their dopamine trap. Whereas YouTube is a meritocracy.”“And here's the beauty. If you think about YouTube as your personal agent… What personal agent knows your material all the way back to the very first time you ever posted anything? And also it knows the customer, your client, your prospective new best friend, their entire history of everything they've ever watched.”What can you do for me in one hour, Brian?“We can crack who you are, what you do and do not do, and craft your storytelling engine.”“Have you noticed, Roy, that on YouTube, so much of the content boils down to, ‘Can you blank with a blank?' Or ‘How to blank with a blank.' And these are transactional things. Either they trade on curiosity, or they trade on things that people are searching for. But very quickly, all you have to do is get on paper what your flavor is – that's called in fancy Hollywood talk – ‘a style guide.'”“Now, I don't want to intimidate anybody… You know what, if I did want to intimidate people, I'll say, ‘In one hour, Roy, I can give you a story bible, a style guide, I can give you a structure, a framework, a narrative storytelling. I could break down the beats of your three-act structure. We could consider the Campbellian monomyth, all those things.'”“We could get that done in an hour and technically I'd be accurate. But the way I would explain it to anybody watching this is, ‘Give me an hour and I'll teach you not how to tell a story; I'll teach you to tell all the stories, because stories are happening to you all the time. Every client that has a setback is an amazing story.'”“It is so dead simple.”“Now that doesn't mean it's easy, but it is simple. The first hour is basically everything you're going to need to know. Everything past that is reinforcement, and everything after that is refinement.”

Experiencing Caregiving as Spiritual Practice with Dr. Edward Smink

All Home Care Matters

This is the final installment of our mini-series with Dr. Edward Smink that explores the many aspects of caregiving. This installment explores experiencing caregiving as a spiritual practice. For the previous two installments from this series please refer to our official YouTube channel. The concert violinist or Olympic athlete did not arrive at the pinnacle of their success by simple will power. From their first dream to entering and making them real, each entered into a particular journey of practice. Flat notes and aching muscles became the learning opportunities for each to excel. Practice became routine, in fact often the center of their lives. Caregivers too, dream, and achieve different Licensures, experiences and educational opportunities. Insights are learned because of trials, struggles, joys and achievements. What keeps each committed, centered, and dedicated to live out their dreams Dr. Smink asks? In so many ways, he suggests that this is an Campbellian or heroic journey. The task before the caregiver is to remain steadfast as they are sent into the arena of human joys and sufferings. Where Soul leads one to find reverie, refreshment and solace, the sinew that allows the caregiver to enter into the depths of their experiences is the art of reflection. Smink expands the notion of reflection as a normal human experience. Caregivers reflect on the needs of their patients, logos or rational side of caregiving. Little attention, however, is giver to the mythos or creative side of caregiving, where the caregiver meets the archetypal strengths of the hero, of the wounded healer, of the spiritual nature of caregiving, and the importance of practice. He explores the ancient history of the wounded healer and how it relates to the present age of the caregiver. Dr. Smink concludes that the art of caregiving is a spiritual practice as both the caregiver and the one being served are affected, and indeed transformed. He asks: “Are you a better person because of your work as a caregiver?

With Season Two of The Mandalorian premiering at the end of the month, our latest episode of Hyperspace Theories revisits the stories told in Season One. Between the three-episode opening arc and the two-episode conclusion falls a trio of distinct episodes that build and develop a number of important character dynamics. Tricia Barr and B.J. Priester discuss Chapter Four: Sanctuary, Chapter Five: The Gunslinger, and Chapter Six: The Prisoner and what they contribute to The Mandalorian’s story progression. Many of those developments involve the show’s central and titular character. Like the middle of a Campbellian journey, Mando faces tests and trials while encountering allies and enemies. These episodes, for example, reinforce Mando’s distaste for droids and his sworn commitment to never remove his helmet around other people. They also show his worldly experience, his tactical combat prowess and creativity, and the code of honor that plays a role in determining which adversaries he defeats but leaves alive – and which ones he kills. And of course, his relationship with his ward, Baby Yoda, advances too, with a little prompting from Cara Dune, Omera, and Pelli Motto, as well as Mando’s own burgeoning affection for the child. This week on Dragon Quest FM, we're continuing our discussion on archetypes within the series. For our final episode on the subject, we're talking about the orphan hero! Hero orphan? Orphaned hero? Whatever. You get it. The hero whose parents are either dead or abandoned them. As usual, we walk you through every single mainline Dragon Quest game. We start off discussing Dragon Quest 1-3, and talk about how once again, these Campbellian archetypes don't really start to kick in until around DQ III. Then we discuss DQ 4 and 5, a little bit about Dragon Quest: Your Story. Warning: There are a few spoilers scattered throughout this episode, but we tried to always let people know before they hit. We also have some exciting news shared by our friend Ryan Molina regarding Dragon Quest X, so be sure to listen for that! We talk about how DQ 6's complicated story makes for complicated answers when it comes to the orphan hero. After the Shameless Self Promotion break, we're back to discussing the orphan hero archetype in Dragon Quest 7, which totally breaks all the rules! After that, it's on to DQ 8, mouse in pockets, and what every good grandpa needs to do. Then it's DQ 9, angels, and a short tangent about black-and-white Westerns and wagon chases. And speaking of DQ 10 earlier, we also talk about the prologue of Version 1.0 and how that plays into the orphan hero archetype as well. Then, for our last bit of discussion, we bring up the Luminary's Moses-like origins in Dragon Quest XI. Originally from Georgia, the former republic of Russia, she arrived with a degree in physics, and transitioned into the fashion and jewelry career stream, starting as a buyer for Macy’s jewelry department, then a buyer for a major gemstone company. Now, she has her own line, and creates one of a kind jewelry with enchanting color combinations of bright gemstones and precious metals. Raising Conscious Kids: The New Parenting Paradigm With Neil Strauss #194

This is a show about parenting, featuring not only one of my all-time favorite authors but also one of the best parents I’ve ever watched in action. When he wants to learn about, or write about something meaningful to him, he becomes quite literally obsessed, and at this stage in his life, it’s all about becoming the best father he can possibly be. Neil Strauss’s books are not only educational, hilarious, emotionally touching, but also quite addictive. Over the many years I’ve been reading them, they’ve made me laugh, cry, and change my life for the better – and no matter what he writes about, I can’t put his books down until I’ve greedily inhaled every single word. Neil co-wrote some of the best biographies of our time, but he’s best known for The Game, which follows his journey infiltrating the pickup artist subculture and learning how to be one. This segued into teaching other guys pickup artistry, which had its ups and its downs, ultimately culminating in a sequel of sorts called The Truth: An Uncomfortable Book About Relationships. At the time, The Truth seemed like a conclusive end to Neil’s hero’s journey, in which he lost his love and then won it back. But now, a few years later, we can see that the story isn’t over. Our complex relationships with relationships can’t be neatly wrapped up in a Campbellian journey, and this is a truth that I think we all come to realize eventually. So today, Neil shares what this next step of his journey looks like: the end of a marriage, the beginning of a non-romantic relationship with the mother of his child, the new paradigm of conscious parenting, and dating while he navigates the complexities of it all. Since Neil has yet to write a book on parenting, I was thrilled to be able to sit down and have him share all he has learned so far about being the best dad he can be.   Topics Discussed In This Episode: Why the key to changing the world is healthy parenting Maintaining a great relationship with the other parent of your child, even when the romantic relationships ends A big myth about relationships Why “staying together for the kids” is a backwards plan that doesn’t produce healthy, loving role models Developing a mature relationship with monogamy How The Truth changed Luke’s life A sure way to kill any romantic relationship: turning your partner into a parent The mistakes that most parents make – and the ones that we can avoid The moment Neil learned that he was going to have a kid (also the first time he ever hoped a pregnancy test would come back positive) The books and experts that have taught Neil the most about parenting Why Neil keeps a diary for his son How a parent can create boundaries and not get enmeshed with their child, while still being loving and intimate with them You’re not always going to be your kid’s friend – and that’s okay! How to avoid teaching your children to medicate their emotions The Continuum Concept & parenting The roles that people take on in dysfunctional families Why conscious parenting is the most important thing you can do in your life Neil’s new podcast, To Live and Die in LA, about the disappearance of aspiring actress Adea Shabani   More about this episode. www.StoryLinkRadio.com Early in the 21st century, nearly twenty years after the invention of atomic power and ten years after the first lunar landing, the four-man crew of the Ares has landed on Mars in the Mare Cimmerium. A week after the landing, Dick Jarvis, the ship's American chemist, sets out south in an auxiliary rocket to photograph the landscape. Eight hundred miles out, the engine on Jarvis' rocket gives out, and he crash-lands into one of the Thyle regions. Rather than sit and wait for rescue, Jarvis decides to walk back north to the Ares. Just after crossing into the Mare Chronium, Jarvis comes across a tentacled Martian creature attacking a large birdlike creature. He notices that the birdlike Martian is carrying a bag around its neck, and recognizing it as an intelligent being, saves it from the tentacled monstrosity. The rescued creature refers to itself as Tweel. Tweel accompanies Jarvis on his trip back to the Ares, in the course of which the pair encounter many bizarre Martian creatures and endure numerous life-threatening adventures. "A Martian Odyssey" was created by American writer Stanley G. Weinbaum originally published in the July 1934 issue of Wonder Stories. It was followed four months later by a sequel, "Valley of Dreams". Isaac Asimov described "A Martian Odyssey" as "a perfect Campbellian science fiction story, before John W. Campbell." In Asimov's words, "The Martian Tweel may be the first creature in science fiction to fulfil Campbell's dictum, 'write me a creature who thinks as well as a man, or better than a man, but not like a man'." Asimov considered "A Martian Odyssey" to be one of only three stories that changed the way all subsequent ones in the science fiction genre were written. It is the oldest short story selected for inclusion in The Science Fiction Hall of Fame, and it was voted one of the all-time best sci-fi stories, coming in second only to Isaac Asimov's "Nightfall."
